Two physicians performed hospital chart review and data entry. Results: A total of 160 entries were made into the pituitary tumour registry. The overall mean age of the cohort …

Children’S Perceptions Of Mothers’ And Fathers’ Parental Rearing In White And Hispanic Families, Ariz Rojas-Cifredo Apr 2007

Children’S Perceptions Of Mothers’ And Fathers’ Parental Rearing In White And Hispanic Families, Ariz Rojas-Cifredo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study compared children's perceptions of mothers' and fathers' parental rearing styles in White and Hispanic families. Participants included 173 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade children recruited from after-school care programs in the School District of Hillsborough County, Florida. Children completed measures of perceived parenting for both mothers and fathers and a self-report inventory of their own current psychological symptoms. No differences between perceptions of parental acceptance in Hispanic and White families were expected. However, perceptions of hostile control were predicted to be higher for Hispanic fathers than for White fathers. In contrast, perceptions of maternal inconsistent discipline were …

Technical Paper Session I-B - Professional Development Key Success Factors For New Generation Employees In Support Of The Moon, Mars And Beyond Mission, Marilyn Lutz, Jason O. Breitfeller Apr 2007

Technical Paper Session I-B - Professional Development Key Success Factors For New Generation Employees In Support Of The Moon, Mars And Beyond Mission, Marilyn Lutz, Jason O. Breitfeller

Space Congress® Proceedings

Future Space Programs will rely on young professionals. Our task is to solve the challenges associated with supporting space exploration while successfully breaking down generational barriers.

In 2004, President Bush put forth a challenge reminiscent of a speech given by President Kennedy in 1961. President Bush declared a goal “to return to the moon by 2020 as the launching point for missions beyond”. It is the human mind that imagines and implements the designs for the machines that will take us to the moon and beyond.

The objectives of Presidents Bush and Kennedy appear identical. The approach is completely different. …

Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris Apr 2007

Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris

Education and Culture

This article connects two of Dewey’s generic traits of existence—stability and precariousness—to four elements specified in his preface to Democracy and Education (democracy, evolution, industrialization and the experimental method) and one element specified in his preface to How We Think (childhood). It argues that Dewey’s metaphysics of stability and precariousness is implicit in his philosophy of education and provides a unifying aspect to his philosophy of education that is relevant to the modern world. The article then briefly looks at whether Dewey developed a metaphysics at all and concludes that Dewey did indeed develop a metaphysics—a new metaphysics of human …

Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich Apr 2007

Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich

Education and Culture

Interactive constructivism and its implications for education will be introduced in four steps. (1)The context of the approach and its relation to other constructivist developments will be discussed. (2)I will examine essential pragmatic criteria in the tradition of John Dewey that are relevant for interactive constructivism. (3)More decisively than Dewey interactive constructivism launches a meta-theoretical distinction between observers, participants, and agents. (4)Communication as a chief dimension of education can be analyzed out of three perspectives: the symbolic, the imaginative, and the real. Educators must recognize that their interaction with learners includes great demands not only in practical application/implementation but also …

From Theory To Practice In Postmodern Times: Female Genital Operations As A Catalyst For Interrogating Imperial Feminisms And Decolonizing Transnational Feminist Politics, Christina M. Brux Apr 2007

From Theory To Practice In Postmodern Times: Female Genital Operations As A Catalyst For Interrogating Imperial Feminisms And Decolonizing Transnational Feminist Politics, Christina M. Brux

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Honors Projects

While centered in a critique of Western feminist discourses of non-Western female genital operations and motivated by a desire to envision decolonization strategy, this project explores what it means, given histories and realities of imperialisms and long-standing hierarchies between and among women, to speak about transnational topics of women and gender. This project considers how we might participate in the shared feminist responsibility of recognizing colonial histories and realities, rectifying imperialisms between women and across nations, rejecting feminist master narratives, celebrating diverse subjectivities, and dismantling each and every binary that has been constructed between the "First" and "Third" worlds.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background. SH3 domains are small protein modules of 60-85 amino acids that bind to short proline-rich sequences with moderate-to-low affinity and specificity. Interactions with SH3 domains play a crucial role in regulation of many cellular processes (some are related to cancer and AIDS) and have thus been interesting targets in drug design. The decapeptide APSYSPPPPP (p41) binds with relatively high affinity to the SH3 domain of the Abl tyrosine kinase (Abl-SH3), while it has a 100 times lower affinity for the α-spectrin SH3 domain (Spc-SH3). Results. Here we present the high-resolution structure of the complex between the R21A mutant of …

Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska Apr 2007

Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Feral pigs, wild boars, and hybrids either currently inhabit, or have been successfully introduced to every continent except Antarctica, and many oceanic islands. There are thirteen current known localities of feral pigs in Oregon (see Appendix A), distributed in various locations in southern and central Oregon. The biology of feral pigs indicates that these animals are capable of inhabiting virtually all available habitat west of the Cascade mountains, and the majority of the habitat east of the Cascades, with preference for riparian regions. Reports of feral pig biology and ecology in other regions in the United States, as well as …

Effects Of Exposure To Perinatal Ultrasound Radiation On Information Processing In The Auditory System, Jennifer Burnett Apr 2007

Effects Of Exposure To Perinatal Ultrasound Radiation On Information Processing In The Auditory System, Jennifer Burnett

Theses and Dissertations

Ultrasound (US) has become a standard procedure used during pregnancy to document the health and development of a fetus. When ultrasound was first developed, some researchers urged caution, suggesting that the possibility of hazard should be kept under constant review. Given the routine application of fetal ultrasound imaging, any possibility of deleterious developmental effects resulting from its use is an important public health issue. Rats have a well characterized central nervous system whose neurochemical pathways and neuronal electrophysiology qualitatively correspond to those of humans. Because of this, we opted to use Wistar rats as an animal model to document effects …

Mother/Infant Interaction In The Context Of Four Maternal Risk Factors, Deirdre Ann Winder Apr 2007

Mother/Infant Interaction In The Context Of Four Maternal Risk Factors, Deirdre Ann Winder

Dissertations and Theses

Social-emotional skill acquisition in infancy can effect positive outcomes in all developmental domains as the child matures. Caregiver/infant interaction provides a critical context for positive social-emotional development in the infant (i.e., attachment, emotional regulation, communication). Within interaction, these three areas of infant social-emotional development are fostered by the dyadic relationship between caregiver and infant. However, infant skill acquisition within these areas of social-emotional development may be interrupted by risk factors in the caregiving environment. Four maternal risk factors (i.e., mental health, literacy level, age, income) associated with a negative impact on developmental outcome and on interaction were the focus of …

When Educational Technology Meets New Pedagogical Methods, Stephanee Synnott

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This thesis speaks about the The RIBGHE (Rhode Island Board of Governors of Higher Education), formally known as Eisenhower grant. The Science and Mathematic faculty at Salve Regina University have been working under the Eisenhower and RIBGHE Partnership Grant for the past 8 years. It had multiple benefits. It was through the RIBGHE, that there were three cornerstones the driving force behind this senior thesis; 1) introducing technology in the high schools in R.I. 2) introducing new pedagogical methods in science education and 3) training teachers to develop inquiry-based curricular materials. PACO Scientific, which is one of the new major …

The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller Apr 2007

The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller

Senior Honors Theses

The relationship between food consumed and the resulting body size is not easy to understand. Considering the vast array of nutritional input, numerous hypotheses have been tested for connections among diet constituents and the shape of the human body. The purpose of this study was two fold: to determine the correlation between the level of blood cholesterol and waist size among college students and to determine the correlation between blood pressure and waist size among college students. Volunteers from an upper level Kinesiology class at Liberty University were measured around the waist, screened for blood pressure, and administered a cholesterol …

Implementation Of A Reading Curriculum In A 6 Week Summer Enrichment Program, Katie J. Holz-Russell Apr 2007

Implementation Of A Reading Curriculum In A 6 Week Summer Enrichment Program, Katie J. Holz-Russell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this research project, the author presents an enrichment curriculum that will be implemented in the Denver Summerbridge 6 week summer school program. Denver public school students choose to attend this program because they are seeking academic enrichment during the summer. They seek enrichment from Denver Summerbridge because most supplementary programs at their home schools focus on closing the achievement gap and increasing standardized test scores, rather than offering a structured enrichment program for gifted students. The curriculum presented in Chapter 4 provides a framework for a 9th grade literacy classroom. The author attempted to strike a balance between reviewing …
