Increasing Social Interaction Skills In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Parent Implementation Of The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-Based (Dir) Program, Yvette Cantu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purposed study examined the changes in positive and negative social interactions based on parent implementation and non-implementation in the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based (DIR) program designed for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Nine participants were randomly selected and assigned to a DIR treatment group and a control group. The study was conducted over an eight week period. Overall, the statistical analysis of the implementation of the DIR program at home did not yield a significant change in positive social interaction skills. However, the parent's perspective of their children's social skills, as demonstrated through the parent questionnaire and through …

Global Warming Takes Center Stage At Gsu, Office Of Public Affairs Apr 2007

Global Warming Takes Center Stage At Gsu, Office Of Public Affairs

Press Releases

As we wondered recently if spring would ever arrive, Dr. Beverly Younger gave an audience of over 100 students, staff, faculty, and community members at Governors State University, both the good news and the bad news about global warming.

With information and Power Point presentation taken from the Academy Award winning film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Younger outlined both the causes of global warming and the dangers the world faces if it goes unchecked. Younger, a lecturer in the Department of Social Work at Governors State University, is a volunteer trainer with The Climate Project, a nonprofit organization begun by former …

Slovakia And The European Union: Complexities And Contradictions, Megan M. Metzger Apr 2007

Slovakia And The European Union: Complexities And Contradictions, Megan M. Metzger

International Studies Honors Projects

The European Union is a grand project in supranational governance. As the Union continues to enlarge, however, it faces new challenges and new questions. In this thesis, I use Slovakia as a case study to examine the impact of EU integration and the relationship between the EU’s political goals and the political culture of states themselves. I will argue that there is often a complex and contradictory relationship between these two conceptions, and that this has long-term implications for the processes of continued European integration, supranational governance, and Europeanization which are central to the future of the European Union.

Phytoestrogen is the chemical compound contains in plant which has estro-genic like effect. Estrogen has important function on woman’s sexual organ, such as proliferation of uterine and vaginal cornification. Phytoestrogen are weak agonists for estrogen and illicit statistic significantly increases in uterine wet weight, at definite dose, in uterothrophic bioassay. Biji Klabet or Fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) contains steroidal sapogenins such as diosgenin, tigogenin, gitogenin, yamogenin and trigoneoside, that suspected having an estrogen-like ef-fect or as phytoestrogen. The aim of this research was to investigate the estrogenic effect of fenugreek’s ethanolic extract in ovariectomized and immature rats models. These …

Pour Forth The Sparkling Chalice: An Examination Of Libation Practices In The Levant, Amy M. Fisher Apr 2007

Pour Forth The Sparkling Chalice: An Examination Of Libation Practices In The Levant, Amy M. Fisher

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

Across the Levant “libation installations” have been identified at numerous ancient archaeological sites. This paper examines these claims in light of both the surrounding material remains and the surviving texts of the region that mention libations of wine and water. It shows that libation, the ritual pouring out of a liquid offering to a god, in ancient Syria-Palestine did not require a receptacle for successful completion of the act. Rather, the category “libation installation” exists not because of solid evidence but to fulfill the needs of modern scholars and any such claim must be carefully scrutinized before being accepted.

Meso- And Bathypelagic Fish Interactions With Seamounts And Mid-Ocean Ridges, Tracey Sutton, Filipe M. Porteiro, John K. Horne, Cairistiona I. H. Anderson

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The World Ocean's midwaters contain the vast majority of Earth's vertebrates in the form of mesoand bathypelagic ('deep-pelagic,' in the combined sense) fishes. Understanding the ecology and variability of deep-pelagic ecosystems has increased substantially in the past few decades due to advances in sampling/observation technology. Researchers have discovered that the deep sea hosts a complex assemblage of organisms adapted to a “harsh” environment by terrestrial standards (i.e., dark, cold, high pressure). We have learned that despite the lack of physical barriers, the deep-sea realm is not a homogeneous ecosystem, but is spatially and temporally variable on multiple scales. While there …

Suburban Coyote Management And Research Needs: A Northeast Perspective, Paul D. Curtis, Daniel A. Bogan, Gordon Batcheller Apr 2007

Suburban Coyote Management And Research Needs: A Northeast Perspective, Paul D. Curtis, Daniel A. Bogan, Gordon Batcheller

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Several factors may be responsible for increasing predator abundance in suburbia. These include an enhanced forage base associated with residential sprawl, and protection of predator species that were once persecuted and suppressed by hunters, trappers, and landowners. In the Northeast, anecdotal reports of coyotes (Canis latrans) killing pets in backyards are on the rise. The bulk of coyote complaints, concerns, and questions received from the public by state wildlife agencies are from areas with high human populations. Scant research exists on coyote behavioral ecology in human-altered landscapes. Biologists and managers need to understand changes in the social structure …

Computational Model For Transport In Nanotube-Based Composites With Applications To Flexible Electronics, Satish Kumar, Muhammad A. Alam, Jayathi Y. Murthy Apr 2007

Computational Model For Transport In Nanotube-Based Composites With Applications To Flexible Electronics, Satish Kumar, Muhammad A. Alam, Jayathi Y. Murthy

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Thermal and electrical transport in a new class of nanocomposites composed of random isotropic two-dimensional ensembles of nanotubes or nanowires in a substrate (host matrix) is considered for use in the channel region of thin-film transistors (TFTs). The random ensemble of nanotubes is generated numerically and each nanotube is discretized using a finite volume scheme. To simulate transport in composites, the network is embedded in a background substrate mesh, which is also discretized using a finite volume scheme. Energy and charge exchange between nanotubes at the points of contact and between the network and the substrate are accounted for. A …

Knowledge Management At The Village Level: How Thai Rice Farmers Incorporate Technologies To Improve Production Systems, Jude William R. Genilo Apr 2007

Knowledge Management At The Village Level: How Thai Rice Farmers Incorporate Technologies To Improve Production Systems, Jude William R. Genilo

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The shift from agricultural to industrial and from industrial to knowledge societies has affected the ways farmers run their small-scale field activitiesin Central Thailand. To remain competitive, rice farmers need to continuously incorporate innovations and upgrade their technologies to sustain operations. These innovations and technologies may be seen in practically all aspects of the rice production process – from seed selection to fertilization, from seed raising and growth to irrigation, from crop protection to harvesting, threshing and drying. The study basically aims to explore the plausibility of rice farming villages as “learning organizations” and within these villages, the viability of …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Management of soil organic matter (SOM) is important for soil productivity and responsible utilization of crop residues for additional uses. CQESTR, pronounced “sequester,” a contraction of “C sequestration” (meaning C storage), is a C balance model that relates organic residue additions, crop management, and soil tillage to SOM accretion or loss. Our objective was to simulate SOM changes in agricultural soils under a range of climate and management systems using the CQESTR model. Four long-term experiments (Champaign, IL, >100 yr; Columbia, MO, >100 yr; Lincoln, NE, 20 yr; Sidney, NE, 20 yr) in the United States under various crop rotations, …

Resisting Agricultural Assimilation: The Political Ecology Of Hmong Growers In The Twin Cities Metropolitan Region, Laura M. Kerr Apr 2007

Resisting Agricultural Assimilation: The Political Ecology Of Hmong Growers In The Twin Cities Metropolitan Region, Laura M. Kerr

Geography Honors Projects

Over one and a half million Hmong refugees have arrived in the United States since the end of the “Secret War” in 1974. The Saint Paul and Minneapolis metropolitan area is home to the largest urban population of Hmong immigrants in the United States. A significant number of Hmong refugees living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area have chosen farming as both a primary and supplemental source of income. While living in the metro area many Hmong rent land in peri-urban areas to farm and subsequently sell at local markets. Employing a cultural and political ecology framework, this research critically …

Modern, Indigenous, Woman: Female Agriculturalists, Sustainability, And Development In The Highlands Of Ecuador, Clare H. Jacky Apr 2007

Modern, Indigenous, Woman: Female Agriculturalists, Sustainability, And Development In The Highlands Of Ecuador, Clare H. Jacky

Geography Honors Projects

The country of Ecuador, while it possesses rich societal and environmental diversity, is challenged by political instability, economic crises, and areas of severe environmental degradation. For many reasons, including global economic flows, agricultural change, and economic collapse within the country, the participation and recognition of indigenous agricultural groups in rural areas of Ecuador has been transformed such that the roles, actions, and goals of women in many rural areas of Ecuador have evolved. This project examines changing agricultural systems in a highland region of Ecuador, focusing on the participation and experiences of indigenous agriculturalists, especially the participation and experiences of …

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenoproteins are an elite group of proteins containing a rare amino acid, selenocysteine (Sec), encoded by the codon, UGA. In eukaryotes, incorporation of Sec requires a Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, a stem–loop structure located in the 3'-untranslated regions of selenoprotein mRNAs. Here we report identification of a noncanonical form of SECIS element in Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora canine, single-celled apicomplexan parasites of humans and domestic animals. This SECIS has a GGGA sequence in the SBP2-binding site in place of AUGA previously considered invariant. Using a combination of computational and molecular techniques, we show that Toxoplasma and Neospora possess …

Paradigma Dalam Arkeologi Maritim, Mundardjito Mundardjito

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper is based on a maritime archeological research that grounds itself on the preservation of archeological artefacts and maritime culture. Research on a number of drowned ships at the bottom of the sea and their cargo reveals the relationship between maritime culture and living regional communities. As a new paradigm in maritime archeology, its aim needs to be commensurate with the aim of the conservation efforts which is the empowerment of the communities themselves, and the communities outside of them, and needs to be oriented toward the interests of identity nurturance, development, and economy.
