Building The "Rust Fast Track System" For Identifying Asian Soybean Rust In Iowa, Alison Robertson, Gregory L. Tylka Jun 2007

Building The "Rust Fast Track System" For Identifying Asian Soybean Rust In Iowa, Alison Robertson, Gregory L. Tylka

Journal of Extension

Asian soybean rust is a serious soybean leaf disease not yet discovered in Iowa. There are common soybean leaf diseases that may be confused with Asian soybean rust. To achieve accurate and prompt identification of Asian soybean rust throughout the state, the Iowa Soybean Rust Fast Track system was created. This unique system makes use of hundreds of private agricultural professionals throughout Iowa and 40 Iowa State University Extension field personnel to filter out suspected soybean rust samples that are common soybean leaf diseases, thereby ensuring that the ISU Plant Disease clinic is not inundated with minor diseases of soybean.

Diet, Nutrition, Obesity And Their Role In Arthritis, Peter F. Sharkey, David L. Paskin, Thomas D. Meade, Richard H. Rothman Jun 2007

Diet, Nutrition, Obesity And Their Role In Arthritis, Peter F. Sharkey, David L. Paskin, Thomas D. Meade, Richard H. Rothman

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Obesity and poor nutrition, individually and together, have created costly musculoskeletal disease epidemic in the United States. Processed food, with abundant "empty" calories, has contributed greatly to our dietary woes. Much of the food consumed today is packed with calories but refined to the point that essential nutrients are lacking. Even worse, processed food may have ingredients added that are detrimental to good health. Abundant research has documented a close relationship between obesity, poor diet and orthopaedic problems. Dietary supplements have been proven to provide both disease prevention and therapeutic benefits. Unfortunately, many weight loss programs and methods are ineffective …

The Prevalence Of Government Information On High School Library And Media Center Websites, Doug Way Jun 2007

The Prevalence Of Government Information On High School Library And Media Center Websites, Doug Way

Presentations

In 1997 President Clinton directed federal agencies to develop websites and Internet resources that would serve as “tool(s) for teaching and learning.” The ten years since then have seen an explosion in the amount of government information available to students and educators. Today there are thousands of government websites that specifically target these groups. In addition, over 90 percent of government publications distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program are available on the Internet, making those titles once out of the reach of school libraries just a click away at no cost. To see how school libraries are taking advantage …

Simulated Effects Of Marathon Training On Bone Density, Remodeling, And Microdamage Accumulation Of The Femur, Scott J. Hazelwood, Alesha B. Castillo Jun 2007

Simulated Effects Of Marathon Training On Bone Density, Remodeling, And Microdamage Accumulation Of The Femur, Scott J. Hazelwood, Alesha B. Castillo

Biomedical Engineering

Stress fractures are mechanically induced injuries resulting from fatigue damage to bone due to repetitive loading and are common injuries occurring in runners. In this study, we used computer simulations of marathon training programs to examine the effects of endurance running on femoral density, remodeling, and microdamage accumulation. Simulated remodeling activity increased in the femoral neck and proximal cortex and predicted microdamage increased in all regions examined after 16 weeks for each program. Daily running for three years produced more microdamage than the advanced training schedule over the same time period. Areas of high remodeling and damage corresponded to clinically …

Preliminary Work On The Development Of A Novel Detection Method For Osteoporosis, P. Moran, Mark R. Towler, S. Chowdhury, J. Saunders, M. J. German, N. S. Lawson, H. M. Pollock, I. Pillay, D. Lyons Jun 2007

Preliminary Work On The Development Of A Novel Detection Method For Osteoporosis, P. Moran, Mark R. Towler, S. Chowdhury, J. Saunders, M. J. German, N. S. Lawson, H. M. Pollock, I. Pillay, D. Lyons

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Osteoporosis affects both the organic and mineral phases of bone resulting in a decrease in resistance to fracture. Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans are used for diagnosing osteoporosis, which is conventionally characterized by a decrease in mineral density. Unfortunately, some patients who suffer osteoporotic fractures have normal bone density, because both the organic and the mineral phase are affected. However, there are currently no methods of evaluating the health of the organic phase. Patients undergoing treatment for osteoporosis have reported hardening of their fingernails. As the properties of nail and bone may be linked in a comparable, measurable way, this …

Swarm Intelligence For Transmission System Control, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jun 2007

Swarm Intelligence For Transmission System Control, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many areas related to power system transmission require solving one or more nonlinear optimization problems. While analytical methods might suffer from slow convergence and the curse of dimensionality, heuristics based swarm intelligence can be an efficient alternative. This paper highlights the application of swam intelligence techniques for solving some of the transmission system control problems.

I Don’T Ask God To Move The Mountain, Just Give Me The Strength To Climb It”: Disability Stories Of Southern Rural African American Women, Aline Gubrium Jun 2007

I Don’T Ask God To Move The Mountain, Just Give Me The Strength To Climb It”: Disability Stories Of Southern Rural African American Women, Aline Gubrium

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In this article, I focus on the life stories of African-American women living in a rural community in the South, particularly on their career trajectory stories. Life in this small community leaves little to offer in terms of work, with most women working either in a clothing factory in town, in the state prison located on the outskirts of town, or working in nearby University Town as nursing assistants or custodial workers—all jobs which rely on the participants’ strenuous labor and which often result in disabilities (often related to back or hip injuries) and the participants’ consequent inability to work …

Monsters In The Closet: Biopolitics And Intersexuality, Nadia Guidotto Jun 2007

Monsters In The Closet: Biopolitics And Intersexuality, Nadia Guidotto

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In this paper, I focus predominantly on the hermaphrodite (intersex, in modern discourse) and its relationship to other abject bodies in history to show how biopolitics creates and regulates populations of monsters in order to establish and sustain a particular structure in society. This particular structure is based on what Judith Butler has called the heterosexual matrix, which I will extend to include racial and liberal elements.

Cultural Rehabilitation: Hansen’S Disease, Gender And Disability In Korea, Eunjung Kim Jun 2007

Cultural Rehabilitation: Hansen’S Disease, Gender And Disability In Korea, Eunjung Kim

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This essay explores how leprosy was used to enforce cultural inferiority, which resulted in the oppression of affected people in Korea. The literature shows that images of lepers as cannibals infiltrated family lives in the communities and made institutionalization inevitable. Contemporary cultural representations depict marriage between disabled men and nondisabled women as a symbolic bridge between the segregated space of "lepers" and the "healthy." Such efforts reinforce the normative power of heterosexual marriage.

Colonial Discourses Of Disability And Normalization In Contemporary Francophone Immigrant Narratives: Bessora’S 53 Cm And Fatou Diome’S Le Ventre De ’Atlantique, Julie Nack Ngue Jun 2007

Colonial Discourses Of Disability And Normalization In Contemporary Francophone Immigrant Narratives: Bessora’S 53 Cm And Fatou Diome’S Le Ventre De ’Atlantique, Julie Nack Ngue

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In this paper, I examine recent Francophone immigrant narratives in a disability studies framework to reveal the ways in which colonial discourses of illness and disability on the Black female body haunt contemporary discussions of immigration and integration. While these novels portray female immigrant bodies as subject to constant surveillance and examination within multiple institutions of ‘normalization,’ they also expose oppressive discourses of illness and disability in order to challenge the paradigms of normality and homogeneity which undergird French treatment of immigrants.

Real-Time On-Line Space Research Laboratory Environment Monitoring With Off-Line Trend And Prediction Analysis, Kenol Jules, Paul P. Lin Jun 2007

Real-Time On-Line Space Research Laboratory Environment Monitoring With Off-Line Trend And Prediction Analysis, Kenol Jules, Paul P. Lin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

With the International Space Station currently operational, a significant amount of acceleration data is being down-linked, processed and analyzed daily on the ground on a continuous basis for the space station reduced gravity environment characterization, the vehicle design requirements verification and science data collection. To help understand the impact of the unique spacecraft environment on the science data, an artificial intelligence monitoring system was developed, which detects in near real time any change in the reduced gravity environment susceptible to affect the on-going experiments. Using a dynamic graphical display, the monitoring system allows science teams, at any time and any …

Supramolecular Chemistry Approach To The Design Of A High-Resolution Sensor Array For Multianion Detection In Water, Manuel A. Palacios, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Manuel Marquez, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Jun 2007

Supramolecular Chemistry Approach To The Design Of A High-Resolution Sensor Array For Multianion Detection In Water, Manuel A. Palacios, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Manuel Marquez, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Reliable sensing of structurally similar anions in water is a difficult problem, and analytical tests and sensor devices for reliable sensing of multiple anions are very rare. This study describes a method for fabrication of simple colorimetric array-based assays for aqueous anion solutions, including complex analytes encountered in real-life applications. On the fundamental level, this method shows how the discriminatory capacity of sensor arrays utilizing pattern recognition operating in multianalyte environments may be dramatically improved by employing two key features. The synergy between the sensor and hydrogel host resembles the cooperative effects of an apoenzyme and cofactor: the host hydrogel …

The Stabilizing Effect Of Noise On The Dynamics Of A Boolean Network, Christopher S. Goodrich, Mihaela Teodora Matache Jun 2007

The Stabilizing Effect Of Noise On The Dynamics Of A Boolean Network, Christopher S. Goodrich, Mihaela Teodora Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we explore both numerically and analytically the robustness of a synchronous Boolean network governed by rule 126 of cellular automata. In particular, we explore whether or not the introduction of noise into the system has any discernable effect on the evolution of the system. This noise is introduced by changing the states of a given number of nodes in the system according to certain rules. New mathematical models are developed for this purpose. We use MATLAB to run the numerical simulations including iterations of the real system and the model, computation of Lyapunov exponents, and generation of …

應用多站迷你面試(Mmi)選擇學士後醫學系學生, 克明 劉, 奕馨 楊, 敏 劉, 竹來 葉, 春生 賴, 俊雄 黃

Journal of Medical Education

Biology At Pre-University Level: Does This Provide An Advantage To Medical Students?, Ponnudurai G., Y.S. Chen, Nagarajah L., Hla Yee Yee, Achike F.I.

Journal of Medical Education

Entry into the medical programme at the International Medical University (IMU) requires students to have three of the four science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics) at the pre-university level. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between taking biology at pre-university level and students' academic performance in Semester 1. The academic banding, based on certain academic criteria, are also taken into consideration for analysis. Students' academic performance in the end of semester 1 examination as well as the two in-course assessments was analysed to gauge the relationship between pre-university biology and academic performance. Trivalent Vaccine Against Botulinum Toxin Serotypes A, B, And E That Can Be Administered By The Mucosal Route, Easwaran Ravichandran, Fetweh H. Al-Saleem, Denise M. Ancharski, Mohammad D. Elias, Ajay K. Singh, Mohammad Shamim, Yujing Gong, Lance L. Simpson

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Most reports dealing with vaccines against botulinum toxin have focused on the injection route of administration. This is unfortunate, because a mucosal vaccine is likely to be more efficacious for patients and pose fewer risks to health care workers and to the environment. Therefore, efforts were made to generate a mucosal vaccine that provides protection against the botulinum serotypes that typically cause human illness (serotypes A, B, and E). This work demonstrated that carboxy-terminal peptides derived from each of the three serotypes were able to bind to and penetrate human epithelial barriers in vitro, and there was no cross inhibition …

Angelina And Madonna: Why All The Fuss? An Exploration Of The Rights Of The Child And Intercountry Adoption Within African Nations, Veronica S. Root Jun 2007

Angelina And Madonna: Why All The Fuss? An Exploration Of The Rights Of The Child And Intercountry Adoption Within African Nations, Veronica S. Root

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Development argues that the international community should focus its energy on finding ways in which to support African families. Birth parents need this support so that they are not forced to place their children into orphanages when the child has family members who are willing but unable to care for them. African children who are placed in orphanages are often adopted by individuals living outside of Africa, thereby leaving them without connections to their countries of origin. This Development further supports the goals laid out in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child ("African Charter"), …

Controlling The International Market In Antiquities: Reducing The Harm, Preserving The Past, Patty Gerstenblith Jun 2007

Controlling The International Market In Antiquities: Reducing The Harm, Preserving The Past, Patty Gerstenblith

Chicago Journal of International Law

In this Article, I will discuss three components. First, I will examine the harms that the looting of archaeological sites imposes on society. Second, I will discuss the responses to the problem, particularly in terms of the law that attempts to regulate this conduct, and some of the characteristics of the current legal regime and of the market in antiquities that prevent the law from achieving its full potential for deterrence. Third, this Article will examine and propose solutions to discourage site looting and encourage preservation of the remains of the past for the benefit of the future.

Some Applications Of Gaussian Quadrature And Neural Network Modeling In Earth Flows And Other Slow-Moving Landslides In Cohesive Slope Materials, Rennie Bwalya Kaunda Jun 2007

Some Applications Of Gaussian Quadrature And Neural Network Modeling In Earth Flows And Other Slow-Moving Landslides In Cohesive Slope Materials, Rennie Bwalya Kaunda

Dissertations

Geometrical changes and progressive displacements in earth flows and other slow moving landslides triggered by climatic changes may be addressed by digital modeling. Gaussian quadrature, a numerical integration technique though fixed points, is employed to compute geometrical areas defined by stratigraphic (soil or rock layering) units, vertical pole projections and a slip surface, based on kinematic admissibility. An example from the Lake Michigan coast shows that the total internal geometrical area is found to be preserved during the course of the progressive deformation. Displacement monitoring of the slope shows that it became less stable over a period of eleven years …
