Abstract American black bears (Ursus americanus) have recolonized parts of their former range in the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas after a >40-year absence. Assessment of genetic variation, structuring, gene flow, and dispersal among bear populations along the borderlands of Mexico and Texas is important to gain a better understanding of recolonization by large carnivores. We evaluated aspects of genetic diversity and gene flow for 6 sampling areas of black bears in southwestern North America using genotypic data from 7 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that genetic diversity generally was high in the metapopulation of black bears in …

Exurban development is nonmetropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. Although growth in exurban areas is outpacing that of urban, suburban, or rural landscapes, studies of deer (Odocoileus spp.) ecology in exurban areas are nonexistent. During 2003–2005, we studied space use (i.e., seasonal home-range and core-area size and habitat use relative to human dwellings) and survival of 43 female white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) in an exurban setting near Carbondale, Illinois. Deer had larger home ranges than most suburban deer populations and generally smaller home ranges …

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone And Receptor Distributions In The Visual Processing Regions Of Four Coral Reef Fishes, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas
Faculty Publications
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is widely distributed in the brain of fishes where it may function as a neuromodulator of sensory processing and behavior. Immunocytochemical and neuronal label experiments were conducted on species from four families of coral reef fishes (Chaetodontidae, butterflyfish; Pomacentridae, damselfish; Gobiidae, goby; and Labridae, wrasse) to assess conservation of GnRH targets in the visual processing retina and brain. In all species, GnRH-immunoreactive (-ir) axons from the terminal nerve project principally to the boundary between the inner plexiform (IPL) and inner nuclear (INL) layers of the retina, and are less prominent in the optic nerve, ganglion cell, IPL …

The Extrinsic Proteins Of Photosystem Ii, Johnna L. Roose, Kimberly M. Wegener, Himadri B. Pakrasi
Faculty Publications
Years of genetic, biochemical, and structural work have provided a number of insights into the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) of Photosystem II (PSII) for a variety of photosynthetic organisms. However, questions still remain about the functions and interactions among the various subunits that make up the OEC. After a brief introduction to the individual subunits Psb27, PsbP, PsbQ, PsbR, PsbU, and PsbV, a current picture of the OEC as a whole in cyanobacteria, red algae, green algae, and higher plants will be presented. Additionally, the role that these proteins play in the dynamic life cycle of PSII will be discussed. …
Low Incidence Of Candidatus Liberibacter Asiaticus In Diaphorina Citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) Populations Between Nov 2005 And Jan 2006: Relevance To Management Of Citrus Greening Disease In Florida, Jason M. Meyer, Marjorie A. Hoy, Raghuwinder Singh
Faculty Publications
Populations of D. citri in Florida citrus were surveyed between Sep 2005 and Jan 2006 for Ca. L. asiaticus, the causal agent of HLB. No field-collected adults or immatures of the 1,972 D. citri tested were positive for the HLB pathogen in these samples, indicating that the proportion of D. citri populations hosting Ca. L. asiaticus in the regions sampled was very low (<0.05%) during this survey. More extensive surveys for Ca. L. asiaticus in D. citri are recommended to learn more about the epidemiology of disease transmission in Florida.

After the citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), invaded Florida in 1993, the endoparasitoid Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was introduced in 1994 in a classical biological control program. Subsequent to its establishment, only limited information has been obtained regarding the seasonal abundance of A. citricola and its host in central Florida citrus groves. During 2005, we monitored replicated plots treated with oil or imidacloprid once on 23 Jun 2005, along with untreated control trees, in a Polk County commercial Valencia orange grove on a weekly basis when tender new growth (= flush) was available. As expected, CLM …

Chitosan is a modified, natural biopolymer derived by deacetylation of chitin, a major component of the shells of crustacean. Recently, chitosan has received increased attention for its commercial applications in the biomedical, food, and chemical industries. Use of chitosan in food industry is readily seen due to its several distinctive biological activities and functional properties. The antimicrobial activity and film-forming property of chitosan make it a potential source of food preservative or coating material of natural origin. This review focuses on the applications of chitosan for improvement of quality and shelf life of various foods from agriculture, poultry, and seafood …

Rnai Knockdown Of Nopp140 Induces Minute-Like Phenotypes In Drosophila, Zhengfang Cui, Patrick J. Dimario
Rnai Knockdown Of Nopp140 Induces Minute-Like Phenotypes In Drosophila, Zhengfang Cui, Patrick J. Dimario
Faculty Publications
Nopp140 associates with small nucleolar RNPs to chaperone pre-rRNA processing and ribosome assembly. Alternative splicing yields two isoforms in Drosophila: Nopp140-True is homologous to vertebrate Nopp140 particularly in its carboxy terminus, whereas Nopp140-RGG contains a glycine and arginine-rich (RGG) carboxy terminus typically found in vertebrate nucleolin. Loss of ribosome function or production at critical points in development leads to Minute phenotypes in Drosophila or the Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) in humans. To ascertain the functional significance of Nopp140 in Drosophila development, we expressed interfering RNA using the GAL4/UAS system. Reverse transcription-PCR showed variable losses of Nopp140 mRNA in larvae from …

Experiences Of Michigan Elementary National Board Certification Candidates, Kristen L. Dewitt
Dissertations
Since 1987, over 55,000 teachers have achieved National Board Certification (NBC), which is claimed to be the highest symbol of teaching excellence and an identifier of accomplished teaching. To become certified, teachers must demonstrate a clear understanding of rigorous standards as defined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
This phenomenological study examined ten Michigan elementary National Board Certified Teachers and candidates in hopes of better understanding the roles that motivation, support and pressure played in their decisions to seek NBC, and the influence the process had on their teaching. Four critical findings were identified.
The first critical finding …
An Unequal Consumption? Sex And Gender Differences In Tuberculosis, Sarah K. W. Avink
An Unequal Consumption? Sex And Gender Differences In Tuberculosis, Sarah K. W. Avink
Masters Theses
In the developing world today, tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 26% of avoidable deaths (Holmes et al 1998). Poverty is considered to be a main risk factor for TB, and since some estimates show that women make up 70% of the world's poor (Thorson and Diwan 1998:11), one might conclude that the incidence of TB worldwide would be much higher for women than men. However, reports reviewed in this thesis show the reverse to be true, with an adult annual male notification ratio for TB at 1.5 to 2.1 times higher than that of females. Both biological reasons and social factors …
Brainstem Cholinergic Modulation Of Muscle Tone In Infant Rats, Andrew J. Gall, Amy Poremba, Mark S. Blumberg
Brainstem Cholinergic Modulation Of Muscle Tone In Infant Rats, Andrew J. Gall, Amy Poremba, Mark S. Blumberg
Faculty Publications
In week-old rats, lesions of the dorsolateral pontine tegmentum (DLPT) and nucleus pontis oralis (PnO) have opposing effects on nuchal muscle tone. Specifically, pups with DLPT lesions exhibit prolonged bouts of nuchal muscle atonia (indicative of sleep) and pups with PnO lesions exhibit prolonged bouts of high nuchal muscle tone (indicative of wakefulness). Here we test the hypothesis that nuchal muscle tone is modulated, at least in part, by cholinergically mediated interactions between these two regions. First, in unanesthetized pups, we found that chemical infusion of the cholinergic agonist carbachol (22 mM, 0.1 µL) within the DLPT produced high muscle …
Local Ablation Therapy For Hepatocellular Carcinoma. From Ethanol Injection To Radiofrequency Ablation, Shuichiro Shiina, Ryosuke Tateishi, Hideo Yoshida, Fumihiko Kanai, Masao Omata
Local Ablation Therapy For Hepatocellular Carcinoma. From Ethanol Injection To Radiofrequency Ablation, Shuichiro Shiina, Ryosuke Tateishi, Hideo Yoshida, Fumihiko Kanai, Masao Omata
Saudi Medical Journal
This article reviews the current status of local ablation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma HCC. In the treatment of HCC, non-surgical treatments play important roles since only 20-30% of patients are candidates for surgery. Still worse, even after curative surgical resection, 80% of patients develop recurrence within 5 years. Among non-surgical treatments, image-guided local ablation therapies have been widely used for cases of small-number and small-size lesions, because they are potentially curative, minimally invasive, and easily repeatable. Although percutaneous ethanol injection has long been a standard therapy, there has been a drastic shift from ethanol injection to radiofrequency ablation in recent …
Novel Copper(Ii) And Silver(I) Complexes Incorporating Benzimidazole And Related Nitrogen Donor Ligands: Synthesis, Biomimetic, Anticancer And Antifungal Activities, Mark O'Connor
Doctoral
This project describes the synthesis and biomimetic/biological properties of sixty nine copper (II) and silver (I) complexes. The complexes were derived from reactions of four copper (II) carboxylate compounds along with copper(II) and silver(I) salts with various nitrogen donor ligands. Approximately sixty of the complexes are novel. X-ray crystal structures for five of the novel copper (II) complexes are reported. [Cu9salH)2 (1) [Cu2(asp)4(H2O)2].H2O (2) [Cu(dipsH)2(H2O) (3) and {Cu(msal)(H2))}n (4) were generated when copper (II) hydroxide was reacted with the relevant carboxylic acid. Complexes (1) – (4) reacted with simple benzimidazoles to yield twelve complexes with three of them being structurally …

A Yaminahua Autobiographical Song: Caqui Caqui, Pierre Deleage
A Yaminahua Autobiographical Song: Caqui Caqui, Pierre Deleage
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This essay proposes a theoretical framework of the relationship between autobiography and tradition. In support of this framework, I present a transcription and translation of an autobiographical song recorded among the Yaminahua (in the Western Amazon of Peru). My account of this song allows me to define an original discursive genre: the traditional autobiography. Two contradictory features characterize this genre. On the one hand, it is autobiographical because it makes reference to the personal life of the speaker. On the other hand, it is traditional in the sense that it is inherited from another speaker and faithfully reproduced. I explore …
Organic Apples A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Organic Apples A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Bulletins 4000 -
The belief among some conventional apple growers that it is not possible to reliably produce profitable yields of good quality apples under an organic system in Western Australia is being reconsidered. There are now very good examples of successful commercial organic apple orchards in many parts of the world, including WA. The organic production systems developed by these dedicated growers are showing that yields and quality are comparable to conventional systems.
Title Vii And The Protection Of Minority Languages In The American Workplace: The Search For A Justification, James Leonard
Title Vii And The Protection Of Minority Languages In The American Workplace: The Search For A Justification, James Leonard
Missouri Law Review
My purpose in this Article is to examine possible justifications for the EEOC's language rules under Title VII. Part II provides necessary background information, describing the EEOC rule system as well as the threegeneration process of English acquisition in immigrant families. The remainder of the Article is devoted to potential normative explanations for the EEOC rules. Part III asks whether the Guidelines promote equality interests while Parts IV and V question whether they vindicate personal autonomy or multicultural interests, respectively. I conclude that none of these arguments offers a sufficient justification for interfering with managerial judgments.

Although the value of positivity has been assumed over the years, only recently has it become a major focus area for theory building, research, and application in psychology and now organizational behavior. This review article examines, in turn, selected representative positive traits (Big Five personality, core self-evaluations, and character strengths and virtues), positive state-like psychological resource capacities (efficacy, hope, optimism, resiliency, and psychological capital), positive organizations (drawn from positive organization scholarship), and positive behaviors (organizational citizenship and courageous principled action). This review concludes with recommendations for future research and effective application.

Ferromagnetic Multipods Fabricated By Solution Phase Synthesis And Hydrogen Reduction, Y. C. Sui, Y. Zhao, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Xingzhong Li, David J. Sellmyer
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
A simple approach combining pyrolysis and hydrogen reduction is formulated for making ferromagnetic-branched nanostructures called Co multipods. The CoO multipods (branched nanostructures) were produced through the pyrolysis of cobalt-oleate in octadecane at 280 °C with the presence of oleic acid under the protection of pure nitrogen. The angles between the nearest arms are 90°. After the reduction of the branched CoO nanostructures in flowing hydrogen gas in a tubular oven at 290°C, the CoO is reduced to pure cobalt with hexagonal crystal structure and the branched shapes are retained. Anisotropic magnetic properties were found for cobalt multipods on silicon substrates.

A 20-Year Plan For Hunter/Angler Recruitment, Development And Retention In Nebraska
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Hunting and fishing are important parts of Nebraska’s rich heritage. These time-honored outdoor pursuits are important to overall lifestyle, well-being and natural resources of the citizens of Nebraska. The North American Model for Conservation was based primarily on the activism from our nation’s hunters and anglers. Their role helped develop and instill the seven basic premises of the model: Wildlife is to be held in public trust, there should be an elimination of market hunting, wildlife should be allocated by law, there should be hunting/angling opportunities for all citizens, wildlife should only be killed for legitimate reasons, wildlife should be …

The Role Of Schooling In Constructing Gendered Identities, Bernadette L. Dean, Rahat Joldoshalieva, Abid Hussainy
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Many research studies show that schools play an important role in constructing gendered identities of girls and boys in western contexts. In Pakistan, there are research studies on the construction of gender in textbooks but studies on the role of schools are either unreported or unavailable. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was carried out in public sector schools in the urban and semi-urban areas of Karachi. The findings indicate that the inter-relationship of the structure of schools, the official curriculum, teaching and learning practices and teacher beliefs result in a gendered division of labor, gendered …

This study reports on what we believe are novel mechanism(s) of the vascular protective action of adiponectin. We used intravital microscopy to measure leukocyte-endothelium interactions in adiponectin-deficient (Ad–/–) mice and found that adiponectin deficiency was associated with a 2-fold increase in leukocyte rolling and a 5-fold increase in leukocyte adhesion in the microcirculation. Measurement of endothelial NO (eNO) revealed that adiponectin deficiency drastically reduced levels of eNO in the vascular wall. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated increased expression of E-selectin and VCAM-1 in the vascular endothelium of Ad–/– mice. Systemic administration of the recombinant globular adiponectin domain (gAd) to Ad …
