The Brazilian Model For Free Access To Scientific Publications, Pablo Ortellado, Jorge Machado Jun 2007

The Brazilian Model For Free Access To Scientific Publications, Pablo Ortellado, Jorge Machado

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Although Brazil lacks a cohesive national policy for free access to scientific publications, local initiatives by universities, funding agencies and state and federal government make up the framework for a full policy for free access. The paper aims at putting together the pieces and presenting a general picture of what such policy might be: free access to all Brazilian theses and dissertations through digital repositories; institutional protection for the copying of books for academic purposes; fomenting publicly funded peer-reviewed non author fee free access journals; qualitative (instead of quantitative/ impact based) evaluation for scientists publishing in free access journals. The …

Anuradha Subramanian Publications

A serum free medium was developed for the production of recombinant antibody against Botulinum A (BoNTA) using dihydrofolate reductase deficient Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells (CHO-DG44) in suspension culture. An initial control basal medium was prepared, which was similar in composition to HAM’s F12: IMDM (1:1) supplemented with insulin, transeferrin, selenium and a lipid mixture. The vitamin concentration of the basal medium was twice that of HAM’s F12: IMDM (1:1). CHO-DG44 cells expressing S25 antibody grew from 2 x 105 cells to maximum cell density of 1.04 x 106 cells/ml after 5 days in this control medium. A central …

Bacteria-Mediated Delivery Of Nanoparticles And Cargo Into Cells, Demir Akin, Kathy Ragheb, Jennifer Sturgis, Debby Sherman, Kristen Burkholder, J. Paul Robinson, Arun K. Bhunia, Sulma Mohammed, Rashid Bashir

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Nanoparticles and bacteria can be used, independently, to deliver genes and proteins into mammalian cells for monitoring or altering gene expression and protein production. Here, we show the simultaneous use of nanoparticles and bacteria to deliver DNA-based model drug molecules in vivo and in vitro. In our approach, cargo (in this case, a fluorescent or a bioluminescent gene) is loaded onto the nanoparticles, which are carried on the bacteria surface. When incubated with cells, the cargo-carrying bacteria (‘microbots’) were internalized by the cells, and the genes released from the nanoparticles were expressed in the cells. Mice injected with microbots also …

Biblical Leprosy: Shedding Light On The Disease That Shuns, Alan L. Gillen Jun 2007

Biblical Leprosy: Shedding Light On The Disease That Shuns, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Leprosy has terrified humanity since ancient times and was reported as early as 600 BC in India, China, and Egypt. Hansen’s disease is still a major health problem.

Disease is a constant reminder of just how much things have changed since God pronounced a curse on the earth. At first, everything was “very good,” but Adam’s sin brought death and decay into the world.

Endothelial Stomatal And Fenestral Diaphragms In Normal Vessels And Angiogenesis, R. V. Stan Jun 2007

Endothelial Stomatal And Fenestral Diaphragms In Normal Vessels And Angiogenesis, R. V. Stan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vascular endothelium lines the entire cardiovascular system where performs a series of vital functions including the control of microvascular permeability, coagulation inflammation, vascular tone as well as the formation of new vessels via vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in normal and disease states. Normal endothelium consists of heterogeneous populations of cells differentiated according to the vascular bed and segment of the vascular tree where they occur. One of the cardinal features is the expression of specific subcellular structures such as plasmalemmal vesicles or caveolae, transendothelial channels, vesiculo-vacuolar organelles, endothelial pockets and fenestrae, whose presence define several endothelial morphological types. A less explored …

Stable Aqueous Nanoparticle Film Assemblies With Covalent And Charged Polymer Linking Networks, Lesley E. Russell, Anne A. Galyean, Sherilyn M. Notte, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The construction of highly stable and efficiently assembled multilayer films of purely water soluble gold nanoparticles is reported. Citrate-stabilized nanoparticles (CS-NPs) of average core diameter of 10 nm are used as templates for stabilization-based exchange reactions with thioctic acid to form more robust aqueous NPs that can be assembled into multilayer films. The thioctic acid stabilized nanoparticles (TAS-NPs) are networked via covalent and electrostatic linking systems, employing dithiols and the cationic polymer poly(l-lysine), respectively. Multilayer films of up to 150 nm in thickness are successfully grown at biological pH with no observable degradation of the NPs within the film. The …

Seed Dispersal Limitation In A Neotropical Nutmeg, Virola Flexuosa (Myristicaceae): An Ecological And Genetic Approach, Kimberly Mae Holbrook Jun 2007

Seed Dispersal Limitation In A Neotropical Nutmeg, Virola Flexuosa (Myristicaceae): An Ecological And Genetic Approach, Kimberly Mae Holbrook

Dissertations

Seed dispersal contributes significantly to tropical forest maintenance, influencing processes, such as metapopulation dynamics and population persistence. Although several hypotheses have been debated regarding the contribution of seed dispersal to tropical forest diversity, recent work suggests that dispersal limitation is a major component in determining plant population patterns. This dissertation research broadly addresses hypotheses that seed dispersal behaviour of frugivores influences dispersal limitation of a Neotropical tree, Virola flexuosa (Myristicaceae). To test these hypotheses, I studied how different frugivores influenced seed dispersal of V. flexuosa at two sites in Amazonia Ecuador. General research objectives were to estimate fruit removal by …

A Framework Of Ordered Climate Effects On Water Resources: A Comprehensive Bibliography, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Peter H. Gleick

Political Science Faculty Publications

An examination of the metadata for almost 900 bibliographic references on the effects of climate change and variability on U.S. water resources reveals strengths and weaknesses in our current knowledge. Considerable progress has been made in the modeling of climate change effects on first-order systems such as regional hydrology, but significant work remains to be done in understanding subsequent effects on the second-, third-, and fourth-order economic and social systems (e.g., agriculture, trade balance, and national economic development) that water affects. In order to remedy a recently-revealed lack of understanding about climate change on the part of the public, climate …

Genetic Randomization Reveals Functional Relationships Among Morphologic And Tissue-Quality Traits That Contribute To Bone Strength And Fragility, Karl J. Jepsen, Bin Hu, Steven M. Tommasini, Hayden-William Courtland, Christopher Price, Carl J. Terranova, Joseph H. Nadeau

Publications and Research

We examined femora from adult AXB/BXA recombinant inbred (RI) mouse strains to identify skeletal traits that are functionally related and to determine how functional interactions among these traits contribute to genetic variability in whole-bone stiffness, strength, and toughness. Randomization of A/J and C57BL/6J genomic regions resulted in each adult male and female RI strain building mechanically functional femora by assembling unique sets of morphologic and tissue-quality traits. A correlation analysis was conducted using the mean trait values for each RI strain. A third of the 66 correlations examined were significant, indicating that many bone traits covaried or were functionally related. …

Rhizobium Etli Ce3 Bacteroid Lipopolysaccharides Are Structurally Similar But Not Identical To Those Produced By Cultured Ce3 Bacteria, Wim D'Haeze, Christine Leoff, Glenn Freshour, K. Dale Noel, Russell W. Carlson Jun 2007

Rhizobium Etli Ce3 Bacteroid Lipopolysaccharides Are Structurally Similar But Not Identical To Those Produced By Cultured Ce3 Bacteria, Wim D'Haeze, Christine Leoff, Glenn Freshour, K. Dale Noel, Russell W. Carlson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Rhizobium etli CE3 bacteroids were isolated from Phaseolus vulgaris root nodules. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the bacteroids was purified and compared with the LPS from laboratory-cultured R. etli CE3and from cultures grown in the presence of anthocyanin. Comparisons were made of the O-chain polysaccharide, the core oligosaccharide, and the lipid A. Although LPS from CE3 bacteria and bacteroids are structurally similar, it was found that bacteroid LPS had specific modifications to both the O-chain polysaccharide and lipid A portions of their LPS. Cultures grown with anthocyanin contained modifications only to the O-chain polysaccharide. The changes to the O-chain polysaccharide consisted …

The Scope And Nature Of Panhandling And The Related Crime In Denver, Colorado, Megan A. Gall Jun 2007

The Scope And Nature Of Panhandling And The Related Crime In Denver, Colorado, Megan A. Gall

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Nationally, increases in the number of panhandlers and homeless people are associated with social and economic issues and are the subject of public policy debate, sociological inquiry and public interest (DHPG 2003). Panhandlers and homeless people are collectively called transients for this research. In the 1950s, the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill caused the first major influx of homelessness. Discrepancies between affordable housing and wages grew through the 1960s and 1970s and the problem did not gain national attention until the 1980s (DCEH n.d.). The increased attention is primarily due to the continued scarcity of housing, increasing discrepancies between housing …

Bio::Nexus: A Perl Api For The Nexus Format For Comparative Biological Data, Thomas Hladish, Vivek Gopalan, Chengzhi Liang, Weigang Qiu, Peter Yang, Arlin Stoltzfus

Publications and Research

Background Evolutionary analysis provides a formal framework for comparative analysis of genomic and other data. In evolutionary analysis, observed data are treated as the terminal states of characters that have evolved (via transitions between states) along the branches of a tree. The NEXUS standard of Maddison, et al. (1997; Syst. Biol. 46: 590–621) provides a portable, expressive and flexible text format for representing character-state data and trees. However, due to its complexity, NEXUS is not well supported by software and is not easily accessible to bioinformatics users and developers. Results Bio::NEXUS is an application programming interface (API) implemented in Perl, …
