Meeting Report: The Role Of Environmental Lighting And Circadian Disruption In Cancer And Other Diseases, Richard G. Stevens, David E. Blask, George C. Brainard, Johnni Hansen, Steven W. Lockley, Ignacio Provencio, Mark S. Rea, Leslie Reinlib Jun 2007

Meeting Report: The Role Of Environmental Lighting And Circadian Disruption In Cancer And Other Diseases, Richard G. Stevens, David E. Blask, George C. Brainard, Johnni Hansen, Steven W. Lockley, Ignacio Provencio, Mark S. Rea, Leslie Reinlib

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Light, including artificial light, has a range of effects on human physiology and behavior and can therefore alter human physiology when inappropriately timed. One example of potential light-induced disruption is the effect of light on circadian organization, including the production of several hormone rhythms. Changes in light-dark exposure (e.g., by nonday occupation or transmeridian travel) shift the timing of the circadian system such that internal rhythms can become desynchronized from both the external environment and internally with each other, impairing our ability to sleep and wake at the appropriate times and compromising physiologic and metabolic processes. Light can also have …

Conventionalism And The World As Bare Sense-Data, Crawford Elder Jun 2007

Conventionalism And The World As Bare Sense-Data, Crawford Elder

Philosophy Articles

We are confident of many of the judgements we make as to what sorts of alterations the members of nature’s kinds can survive, and what sorts of events mark the ends of their existences. But is our confidence based on empirical observation of nature’s kinds and their members? Conventionalists deny that we can learn empirically which properties are essential to the members of nature’s kinds. Judgements of sameness in kind between members, and of numerical sameness of a member across time, merely project our conventions of individuation. Our confidence is warranted because apart from those conventions there are no phenomena …

Investigation Of Gender And Upward Mobility Within Institutions, John Stadler Jun 2007

Investigation Of Gender And Upward Mobility Within Institutions, John Stadler

Theses and Graduate Projects

This thesis explores the impact of gender on upward mobility within both nonprofit and for-profit institutions selected from the Minnesota Book of Lists. The emphasis of the study is on women and leadership, and on the factors that influence upward mobility. The study seeks to identify ways in which institutions provide methods to promote upward mobility for women and to discover the ways in which women are limited in their ability to attain leadership positions. The research conducted within this study suggests that there is no adverse connection between gender and the ability to access leadership positions. Instead, the research …

Enabling International Access To Scientific Data Sets: Creation Of The Distributed Data Curation Center (D2c2), James L. Mullins Jun 2007

Enabling International Access To Scientific Data Sets: Creation Of The Distributed Data Curation Center (D2c2), James L. Mullins

Libraries Research Publications

The challenge of accessing, maintaining, sharing and preserving massive datasets, generally referred to as data curation, has been a direct result of computational e-science. Although scientists and engineers recognized the problem, the solution was not apparent. The principles that underlay library science are not widely understood or appreciated by those outside librarianship. The theory and principles behind librarianship are obscured by historical application primarily to print materials – books and journals – however, the same principles that apply to organization, retrieval, and preservation of print materials apply to the digital realm as well.

Facilitating The Deposit Of Experimental Chemistry Data In Institutional Repositories: Project Spectra, Peter Morgan, Jim Downing, Peter Murray-Rust, Alan Tonge, Fiona Cotterill, Henry Rzepa, Lorraine Windsor

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Institutional Open Access repositories are becoming established as an important part of the university library and information services infrastructure. While early efforts to populate them with content have concentrated on the deposit of peer-reviewed research papers, there is a growing awareness of their potential as repositories of data and other non-text materials, and consequently a need to develop strategies and procedures that can realise this potential. Chemistry as a discipline has been slower than the physical and biomedical sciences to adopt and exploit Open Access concepts in the handling of experimental data and research publications. Chemical information is essential to …

Can Organic Agriculture Feed The World?, Catherine Badgley, Ivette Perfecto, Kenneth Cassman , Responder, Jim Hendrix , Responder

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

During the past 30 years there has been a steady decrease in funding allocated to agricultural research in both developed and developing countries because of the widespread view that food insecurity is primarily caused by poverty and a lack of purchasing power rather than the inability to produce enough food. However, these views are being challenged by three global mega-trends: (1) a steady decrease in arable land area suitable for intensive food crop production as a result of farmland conversion to urban, industrial and recreational uses, (2) a steady reduction in the relative rate of yield gain for the major …

Distributed Reproducible Research Using Cached Computations, Roger Peng, Sandrah P. Eckel Jun 2007

Distributed Reproducible Research Using Cached Computations, Roger Peng, Sandrah P. Eckel

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The ability to make scientific findings reproducible is increasingly important in areas where substantive results are the product of complex statistical computations. Reproducibility can allow others to verify the published findings and conduct alternate analyses of the same data. A question that arises naturally is how can one conduct and distribute reproducible research? This question is relevant from the point of view of both the authors who want to make their research reproducible and readers who want to reproduce relevant findings reported in the scientific literature. We present a framework in which reproducible research can be conducted and distributed via …

Nonlinear Dynamics In Combinatorial Games: Renormalizing Chomp, Eric J. Friedman, Adam S. Landsberg Jun 2007

Nonlinear Dynamics In Combinatorial Games: Renormalizing Chomp, Eric J. Friedman, Adam S. Landsberg

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

We develop a new approach to combinatorial games that reveals connections between such games and some of the central ideas of nonlinear dynamics: scaling behaviors, complex dynamics and chaos, universality, and aggregation processes. We take as our model system the combinatorial game Chomp, which is one of the simplest in a class of "unsolved" combinatorial games that includes Chess, Checkers, and Go. We discover that the game possesses an underlying geometric structure that "grows" (reminiscent of crystal growth), and show how this growth can be analyzed using a renormalization procedure adapted from physics. In effect, this methodology allows one to …
