John Deere Tractors And School Reform: Balancing Economies Of Scale And Quality Of Life, Stephen K. Miller Jun 2007

John Deere Tractors And School Reform: Balancing Economies Of Scale And Quality Of Life, Stephen K. Miller

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Many school reform reports, many politicians, and typical media coverage attribute today’s reform efforts to the failure of the schools. We need, say critics, to return to the good old days when schools were tough and everybody learned! This essay debunks the Golden Age myth by comparing John Deere tractors to school reform. In the analogy, repeated upgrades of the old two-cylinder motor during the decade of the fifties were associated with the demise of the family farm. The new models were more powerful than the tractors they replaced, but not enough. Eventually, John Deere evolved to the new 4010 …

A Direct Substrate-Substrate Interaction Found In The Kinase Domain Of The Bifunctional Enzyme, 6-Phosphofructo-2-Kinase/Fructose-2,6-Bisphosphatase, Song Gun Kim, Michael Cavalier, M. Raafat El-Maghrabi, Yong Hwan Lee

Faculty Publications

To understand the molecular basis of a phosphoryl transfer reaction catalyzed by the 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase domain of the hypoxia-inducible bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB3), the crystal structures of PFKFB3{radical dot}AMPPCP{radical dot}fructose-6-phosphate and PFKFB3{radical dot}ADP{radical dot}phosphoenolpyruvate complexes were determined to 2.7 Å and 2.25 Å resolution, respectively. Kinetic studies on the wild-type and site-directed mutant proteins were carried out to confirm the structural observations. The experimentally varied liganding states in the active pocket cause no significant conformational changes. In the pseudo-substrate complex, a strong direct interaction between AMPPCP and fructose-6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) is found. By virtue of this direct substrate-substrate interaction, Fru-6-P is aligned …

Cystic Artery Pseudoaneurysm: A Rare But Serious Complication After Cholecystectomy Report Of Three Cases, Talib A. Majid, Raafat R. Ahmad, Ahmed R. Jawad, Akeil H. Eissa, Akeel S. Mahmmod

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

Cholecystectomy is the most common major abdominal procedure (1). Pseudo-aneurysm of the cystic artery is a well documented rare but serious complication that might follow an open or laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). It may be seen in isolation or in association with bile duct injury (2). It represents a technical failure and can be avoided by adopting a standardized procedure. We present three cases of cystic artery pseudoaneurysm, one following an open and two following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. All of them presented with hemobilia but with different scenario. These patients required laparotomy to control their problem, two of them were emergencies and …

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of the some environmental conditions on the levels of the oxidative stress markers, malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH), and some of the transition metals, iron, copper and zinc, in he serum of Iraqi subjects who exposed to different …

Nature-Inspired Interconnects For Self-Assembled Large-Scale Network-On-Chip Designs, Christof Teuscher Jun 2007

Nature-Inspired Interconnects For Self-Assembled Large-Scale Network-On-Chip Designs, Christof Teuscher

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Future nanoscale electronics built up from an Avogadro number of components need efficient, highly scalable, and robust means of communication in order to be competitive with traditional silicon approaches. In recent years, the networks-on-chip (NoC) paradigm emerged as a promising solution to interconnect challenges in silicon-based electronics. Current NoC architectures are either highly regular or fully customized, both of which represent implausible assumptions for emerging bottom-up self-assembled molecular electronics that are generally assumed to have a high degree of irregularity and imperfection. Here, we pragmatically and experimentally investigate important design tradeoffs and properties of an irregular, abstract, yet physically plausible …

Cellmap: An Automated Multielectrode Array Cell Culture Analysis System Based On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Abdur Rub Abdur Rahman Jun 2007

Cellmap: An Automated Multielectrode Array Cell Culture Analysis System Based On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Abdur Rub Abdur Rahman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop fundamental understanding of cell-substrate (CS) and cell-cell (CC) interactions in the culture space for time evolving cell cultures. Space resolved CC and CS interactions are important indicators of cell-density distribution, localized cellular behavior, and multiple cell-layers which are differentiators of normal and abnormal cell behavior. In this research, CS and CC interactions and the variations therein due to a) Cell growth, 2) cell-drug interaction, and 3) effect of Cytotoxin were studied using multielectrode, multi-frequency Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Contemporary impedance based methods sense either CC or CS interaction as a space averaged …

Putting Emotional Reactivity In Its Place? Exploring Family-Of-Origin Influences On Emotional Reactivity, Conflict, And Satisfaction In Premarital Couples, Brandt C. Gardner, Dean M. Busby, Andrew S. Brimhall Jun 2007

Putting Emotional Reactivity In Its Place? Exploring Family-Of-Origin Influences On Emotional Reactivity, Conflict, And Satisfaction In Premarital Couples, Brandt C. Gardner, Dean M. Busby, Andrew S. Brimhall

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research was to develop a structural equation model that tested the effects of emotional reactivity on the relational health of a representative sample of 736 premarital couples. We hypothesized that partners’ perceived family-of-origin experience would be predictive of partners’ reports of their own and their partners’ emotional reactivity. These reports were hypothesized to predict partners’ reports of their own and their partners’ ability to manage conflict, which were hypothesized to predict relationship satisfaction. Overall, the model fit the data quite well, with particularly interesting differences by gender. We discuss the model’s fit within the larger body …
