Non-Resident Father Involvement And Adolescent Well- Being: Father Effects Or Child Effects?, Daniel Hawkins, Paul R. Amato, Valarie King
Non-Resident Father Involvement And Adolescent Well- Being: Father Effects Or Child Effects?, Daniel Hawkins, Paul R. Amato, Valarie King
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Is active fathering by nonresident fathers a cause or a consequence of adolescent well- being? Past studies of nonresident father involvement have assumed a father effects model in which active parenting by fathers improves adolescent adjustment. A child effects model, in which fathers respond to levels of well-being among their adolescent offspring by becoming more or less involved parents, could also account for the positive association between active fathering and adolescent adjustment. We utilize nationally representative data from the 1995 and 1996 waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to estimate the cross-lagged associations between nonresident …

A 2650-Year-Long Record Of Environmental Change From Northern Yellowstone National Park Based On A Comparison Of Multiple Proxy Data, Cathy Whitlock, Walter Dean, Joseph Rosenbaum, Lora Stevens, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Brandi Bracht, Mitchell Power
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Geochemical, stable-isotope, pollen, charcoal, and diatom records were analyzed at high-resolution in cores obtained from Crevice Lake, a varved-sediment lake in northern Yellowstone National Park. The objective was to reconstruct the ecohydrologic, vegetation, and fire history of the watershed for the last 2650 years to better understand past climate variations at the forest-steppe transition. The data suggest a period of limited bottom-water anoxia, relatively wet winters, and cool springs and summers from 2650 to 2100 cal yrBP (700–150 BC). Dry warm conditions occurred between 2100 and 850–800 cal yrBP (150 BC and AD 1100–1150), when the lake was anoxic, winter …

Nebraska's Library Depository Retrieval Facility, Debra Pearson, Nancy J. Busch
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
High-density storage of library materials, while becoming more commonplace, is still uncharted territory for many academic libraries. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries undertook the challenge of planning, construction and implementation of a Library Depository Retrieval Facility (LDRF) as a preservation and money-saving solution for expanding collections and decreased funding. The project was a library-system wide undertaking, with project management being the chosen method of organizational structure and process. This article describes the process in several phases, from initial discussions through development of a program statement, funding, planning, construction, load-in, and operations. The discussion will provide those considering a similar project …

Press Releases
This summer, Dr. Pamela Guimond will leave her home in Crete and her work as Academic Advisor and Assistant Professor of Biology Education at Governors State University to visit two different continents. She will experience traveling the world, learning and sharing knowledge, a bit of culture shock, and a lot of jet lag.
While in Asia, Guimond will tour China as a student. In Europe, she will be the educator when she presents a paper at the Oxford Round Table at Oxford University, England.

Interdisciplinary Team Teaching: Lessons For Engineering Instructors From A Capstone Course In Environmental Studies, David Braun, Emmit B. Evans, Randall Knight, Thomas Ruehr
Electrical Engineering
The capstone course teaches students to analyze global environmental issues, resources, and human activities with a systems approach based on scientific, economic, political, social and ethical perspectives. Such an intrinsically multifaceted subject demands interdisciplinary treatment. To deliver the interdisciplinary treatment, the course uses diverse faculty teams comprised of faculty from fields in the natural and social sciences, engineering, and business. This work describes the interdisciplinary team teaching strategies adopted for the course and how they evolved with subsequent offerings of the course. We present assessment data measuring how well students achieve course objectives. Finally, experience gleaned from this course for …

Picking Barbie™’S Brain: Inherent Sex Differences In Scientific Ability?, Alison Nash, Giordana Grossi
Picking Barbie™’S Brain: Inherent Sex Differences In Scientific Ability?, Alison Nash, Giordana Grossi
Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought
The idea that the underrepresentation of women in scientific fields stems from inherent sex differences in scientific abilities has recently re-emerged. We critically examine the argument for biological differences in these abilities, focusing on two central claims: 1) There exist measurable sex differences in mathematical and scientific aptitude, and 2) biological predispositions underlie these differences. A review of the research reveals that findings of differences in math and science performance are not reliable and depend on the measures used. Furthermore, the key evidence for biological predispositions comes from poorly designed studies with equivocal findings. Therefore, our review indicates that the …

Patterns Of Fish Diversity In A Mainstem Missouri River Reservoir And Associated Delta In South Dakota And Nebraska, Usa, Mark A. Kaemingk, Brian D.S. Graeb, Christopher W. Hoagstrom, David W. Willis
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
There is an expansive and expanding delta at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers in the Lewis and Clark Reservoir. The delta provides diverse aquatic habitat that is somewhat similar to the historic Missouri River and to remnant river habitats. As such, the delta may have relatively high fish species diversity compared to lentic reservoir habitats. To compare patterns of fish diversity between the delta and reservoir habitats, we collected fish in several nursery habitats in both areas using four gear types (seine, gill net, electrofisher and fyke net) on three occasions (July, August and September) in 2005. …

Coyotes As Sentinels For Monitoring Bovine Tuberculosis Prevalence In White-Tailed Deer, Todd C. Atwood, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Thomas J. Deliberto, Holly J. Smith, Justin S. Stevenson
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), is endemic in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in 5 counties (Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, and Presque Isle) in the northeastern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The presence of a wildlife reservoir of tuberculosis in Michigan and the incidence of bTB in cattle (Bos taurus) resulted in Michigan losing its bTB accredited-free status. Subsequent wildlife surveillance programs identified relatively high disease prevalence in coyotes (Canis latrans), generating interest in their potential to serve as a sentinel species to detect bTB prevalence in white-tailed deer. …
Creating And Implementing An Effective Behavior Management Strategy In A Second Grade Classroom, Kristen M. Geary
Creating And Implementing An Effective Behavior Management Strategy In A Second Grade Classroom, Kristen M. Geary
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of creating and implementing a self-management behavior system in a second grade classroom. Different types of behavior management were researched through journals discussing behavior management as well as interviews with classroom teachers. Self-management was determined to be a successful behavior management system and was thus chosen to be implemented in this classroom. An additional goal of this study is also to contribute more knowledge to the field of self-management research. This thesis will combine research, student and teacher questionnaires, focus group interviews and a classroom journal in order to determine …
