An Open Trial Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Compulsive Hoarding, David F. Tolin, Randy O. Frost, Gail Steketee

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of the present study was to provide preliminary data on the efficacy of a new cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for compulsive hoarding. Fourteen adults with compulsive hoarding (10 treatment completers) were seen in two specialty CBT clinics. Participants were included if they met research criteria for compulsive hoarding according to a semistructured interview, were age 18 or above, considered hoarding their main psychiatric problem, and were not receiving mental health treatment. Patients received 26 individual sessions of CBT, including frequent home visits, over a 7-12 month period between December 2003-February 2005. Primary outcome measures were the Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R), …

Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis In A Saudi Arabian Family-Genotyping And Long-Term Follow-Up, Kawther A. Salah, Mashael A. Mobrad, William D. Mitchell, Maria Olin, Gosta Eggertsen

Saudi Medical Journal

A Saudi Arabian family is described in which there were 2 siblings with typical features of cerebral xanthomatosis CTX including premature cataracts, xanthomata of the Achilles tendons, neuro-psychiatric disturbances, and atherosclerosis. The 2 patients were homozygous for a point mutation in the mitochondrial 27-hydroxylase gene CYP27A1, OMIM 606530 located in the splice site of intron 6, where G was exchanged for A IVS6+1G>A. Their parents were cousins, 5 siblings were healthy, 2 were heterozygous for the mutation, and one showed the wild-type genotype. The father was heterozygous for the mutation, while the other family members were not tested. The …

An Opportunity Gap: Focusing On The Issue Of Boys’ Underachievement In School Literacy, Whitney Ann Cromwell Jul 2007

An Opportunity Gap: Focusing On The Issue Of Boys’ Underachievement In School Literacy, Whitney Ann Cromwell

All Graduate Projects

Male students statistically have not been as successful as females on standardized test scores or literacy activities. The discrepancy between literacy achievement between boys and girls at the elementary level is cause for concern. This gap between the literacy achievement of girls and boys will continue unless we change the way we teach. "All educators share the common goal of providing equitable learning opportunities for every student in the classroom. Providing equitable opportunities for girls is a familiar topic; providing them for boys is a relatively recent issue, but one that is appearing with increasing urgency on education agendas around …

The Fusarium Verticillioides Fum Gene Cluster Encodes A Zn(Ii)2cys6 Protein That Affects Fum Gene Expression And Fumonisin Production, Daren W. Brown, Robert A. E. Butchko, Mark Busman, Robert H. Proctor Jul 2007

The Fusarium Verticillioides Fum Gene Cluster Encodes A Zn(Ii)2cys6 Protein That Affects Fum Gene Expression And Fumonisin Production, Daren W. Brown, Robert A. E. Butchko, Mark Busman, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by some Fusarium species and can contaminate maize or maize products. Ingestion of fumonisins is associated with diseases, including cancer and neural tube defects, in humans and animals. In fungi, genes involved in the synthesis of mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites are often located adjacent to each other in gene clusters. Such genes can encode structural enzymes, regulatory proteins, and/or proteins that provide self-protection. The fumonisin biosynthetic gene cluster includes 16 genes, none of which appear to play a role in regulation. In this study, we identified a previously undescribed gene (FUM21) located adjacent …

Medical Product Information Incentives And The Transparency Paradox, Daniel R. Cahoy Jul 2007

Medical Product Information Incentives And The Transparency Paradox, Daniel R. Cahoy

Indiana Law Journal

Recent allegations that essential safety and efficacy information is often suppressed by medical product manufacturers or poorly evaluated by regulators have led to calls for greater information transparency. The public is justifiably concerned that its ability to conduct an informed risk-benefit assessment of drugs and medical devices is compromised. Several changes have already been made to federal regulatory law and medical research policy to mandate greater disclosure and more changes are being considered. However, it is possible that these measures may backfire by enhancing significant tort-based economic disincentives for generating new information.I n other words, greater disclosure requirements could, paradoxically, …

Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2006), Daniel M. Dauer

Elizabeth River Reports

Executive Summary

Macrobenthic communities of the Elizabeth River watershed have been quantitatively sampled since summer 1999. This report presents the data from the eigth year of sampling in 2006. The three objectives of the Benthic Biological Monitoring Program of the Elizabeth River watershed are: (1) To characterize the health of the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River watershed as indicated by the structure of the benthic communities. (2) To conduct trend analyses on long-term data at 14 fixed-point stations to relate temporal trends in the benthic communities to changes in water and/or sediment quality. Trend analyses will be updated annually …

Method Of Measuring Permittivity Of Composite Materials With Hexagonal Ferrite Inclusions, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, Gulnur N. Zhumabayeva, Marina Koledintseva Jul 2007

Method Of Measuring Permittivity Of Composite Materials With Hexagonal Ferrite Inclusions, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, Gulnur N. Zhumabayeva, Marina Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new simple method for measuring complex permittivity of substantially lossy composite materials is presented. In this method, a sample of the material under study should completely fill in the cross-section of the single-mode transmission line (waveguide), and the length of the sample must be an integer of a half-wavelength in the waveguide filled with this material. The oscillator frequency is swept linearly, the minima of the reflection coefficient are measured, and then analytical formulas are used to calculate real and imaginary parts of permittivity. The method was tested on magneto- dielectric samples containing hexagonal ferrite powders, as well on …

Tracking ‘Organic’ Agricultural Research In The United States, 1970-1989: What Federal Legislative And Selected Usda-Sponsored Documents Reveal, Leslie M. Delserone, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This paper enumerates federal government documentation of the period 1970-1989 pertaining to organic agriculture in the United States, identified in the Congressional Information Service’s Cumulative Indices and in bibliographies published by the United States National Agricultural Library. These Congressional hearings, federal legislation, and selected U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-sponsored documents provide an historical context for the 1990 legislation that created the National Organic Program (NOP) and the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). The paper provides chronological tabulations of the historical documents, and discusses the communication difficulties and relationships revealed therein between the Congress, the USDA, and organic producers of …

Botanical Survey Of Fuel Reduction Areas On The Pine Ridge Ranger District Of The Nebraska National Forest, Steven B. Rolfsmeier, Leslie Stewart-Phelps

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Between May and September 2006, surveys of selected areas on the Pine Ridge Unit of the Pine Ridge Ranger District in the Nebraska National Forest were carried out to document the presence of vascular plant species of known or potential conservation concern. The surveys were done in response to a request for botanical information to include in hazardous fuel projects in the East Ash and West Ash drainages. These 2006 surveys concentrated primarily on these drainages, though small forested areas were also examined in the Deadhorse Creek and Indian Creek drainages. (Data from these sites are included in the following …

Personhood, The Soul And Non-Conscious Human Beings: Some Critical Reflections On Recent Forms Of Argumentation Within The Pro-Life Movement, Peter J. Colosi Jul 2007

Personhood, The Soul And Non-Conscious Human Beings: Some Critical Reflections On Recent Forms Of Argumentation Within The Pro-Life Movement, Peter J. Colosi

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

This paper has grown out of concerns that I have about the way in which some pro-life arguments have been developing recently, and it is written in a spirit of frank dialogue with those whom I consider allies. I present three basic problems within some prominent contemporary pro-life argumentation, all three of which are rooted in a general tendency towards relying on empirical science in an increasingly exclusive way as the foundation of those arguments. The three problems that I touch on are: a neglect of the role of God in human procreation, a neglect of the dignity of women, …

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The GLOBE Comparing Surface and Subterranean Environments Field Guide provides an interdisciplinary framework for exploring the physical, chemical, and biological connections between surface environments and the subterranean systems beneath them. Designed for field-based education and undergraduate instruction, the guide supports direct observation, data collection, and comparative analysis across environments such as soils, karst landscapes, caves, groundwater systems, and surface waters using existing GLOBE protocols.

Through structured activities and guiding questions, the field guide emphasizes how water, energy, and nutrients move between surface and subsurface systems, shaping geological features, ecosystem processes, and environmental conditions. By integrating concepts from Earth science, hydrology, …

Using The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning At Disciplinary, National And Institutional Levels To Strategically Improve The Quality Of Post-Secondary Education, Gary D. Poole Jul 2007

Using The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning At Disciplinary, National And Institutional Levels To Strategically Improve The Quality Of Post-Secondary Education, Gary D. Poole

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The continual improvement of post-secondary education (PSE) in Canada requires at least three important elements: (1) an understanding of the forms that good teaching takes, with a focus on how these forms differ from one academic discipline to the next; (2) the use of well-collected data to inform decisions regarding constructive change, and (3) ready access to the collective body of knowledge about post-secondary teaching and learning produced across disciplines and institutions. Here, we examine these three elements, first by applying the notion of “signature pedagogies” to help understand the ways teaching differs among disciplines. Then, from institutional and national …
