Methyl Esterification Of Fatty Acids And Eicosanoids With A Novel Reagent Trimethylsilyldiazomethane For Analysis By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Aditi Munmun Sengupta

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Fatty acids are compounds with limited water solubility that belong to the lipid class of bio-organic compounds and can be utilized as a source of energy by the body or as precursors to oxidized compounds that have roles in inflammation and in the regulation of vascular tone. The prostaglandins are naturally occurring 20-carbon cyclopentano fatty acid derivatives produced in mammalian tissue from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and are generated from endoperoxide precursors of arachidonic acid and related polyunsaturated fatty acids by the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase (COX). The lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes convert arachidonic acid into hydroperoxy derivatives of PUFAs termed leukotrienes, which …

Plant-Derived Epcam Antigen Induces Protective Anti-Cancer Response., Robert Brodzik, Sergei Spitsin, Max Golovkin, Katarzyna Bandurska, Carla Portocarrero, Monika Okulicz, Zenon Steplewski, Hilary Koprowski

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Immunotherapy holds great promise for treatment of infectious and malignant diseases and might help to prevent the occurrence and recurrence of cancer. We produced a plant-derived tumor-associated colorectal cancer antigen EpCAM (pGA733) at high yields using two modern plant expression systems. The full antigenic domain of EpCAM was efficiently purified to confirm its antigenic and immunogenic properties as compared to those of the antigen expressed in the baculovirus system (bGA733). Recombinant plant-derived antigen induced a humoral immune response in BALB/c mice. Sera from those mice efficiently inhibited the growth of SW948 colorectal carcinoma cells xenografted in nude mice, as compared …

An 828 Year Streamflow Reconstruction For The Jordan River Drainage Basin Of Northern Utah, Bryan P. Tikalsky Jul 2007

An 828 Year Streamflow Reconstruction For The Jordan River Drainage Basin Of Northern Utah, Bryan P. Tikalsky

Theses and Dissertations

Bryan Tikalsky Department of Geography Master of Science Mountain water resources are essential to those living along the Salt Lake City urban corridor. Water resource planners base their policy on twentieth century climate conditions and streamflow records. Often these records only account for a small amount of the natural variability in streamflow and climate. By utilizing dendrochronology this study seeks to better understand variability of streamflow in the Jordan River Drainage Basin over the last 828 years. A GIS model was used to identify potential sampling sites where tree growth would be sensitive to climate and factors affecting stream run-off. …

Handling And Analysis Of Public Comments In Natural Resource Planning, Lisette Borchert Thurgood Jul 2007

Handling And Analysis Of Public Comments In Natural Resource Planning, Lisette Borchert Thurgood

Theses and Dissertations

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1970 required public input in any federal planning process or action. Consequently, natural resource planning can be characterized as more of a complex situation in recent years due to the increasing involvement of the number of constituents who want to be heard. Likewise, the public wants to know their ideas have been heard and considered. Unfortunately, there is very little information available which identifies how the BLM handles and analyzes public scoping comments that are required under NEPA. The purpose of this research is to identify the handling and analysis methodology used by …

Biosedimentology Of Thermal Features In The Uzon Caldera, Kamchatka, Russia : Implications For Biosignature Formation, Jessica Christine Goin Jul 2007

Biosedimentology Of Thermal Features In The Uzon Caldera, Kamchatka, Russia : Implications For Biosignature Formation, Jessica Christine Goin

Dissertations and Theses

Modern hot springs serve as a habitat for microorganisms similar in metabolism, morphology, and cellular structure to the microbes that existed relatively early in Earth history. To maximize our ability to interpret evidence for these microorganisms and their communities in the rock record, we need to understand how their biosignatures form and become preserved.

This biosedimentological study of four thermal features in the Uzon Caldera (K4 Well, Ochki Pool, Thermophile Spring, and Zavarzin Pool) focused on identifying how chemical, physical and biological inputs contribute to the characteristics of sinter biofabrics. The biofabrics of K4 Well outflow channel were studied in …

Holmes, Alice, And Ezeulu: Western Rationality In The Context Of British Colonialism And Western Modernity, Andrew B. Schultz Jul 2007

Holmes, Alice, And Ezeulu: Western Rationality In The Context Of British Colonialism And Western Modernity, Andrew B. Schultz

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines Western rationality, contextualizing that subject in British colonialism and Western modernity. Using Scott Lash's description of academic characterizations of modernity, I explore the “high" modernity of the social sciences represented in the books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. I then explore the cultural studies critique of that characterization of modernity in the book Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe. Using the theory of Jean Francois Lyotard, Martin Heidegger, and Theodor Adorno, I look at Western rationality through its manifestation in British colonialism. I argue that …

Demographics Of Black Vultures In North Carolina, Bradley F. Blackwell, Michael L. Avery, Bryan D. Watts, Martin S. Lowney Jul 2007

Demographics Of Black Vultures In North Carolina, Bradley F. Blackwell, Michael L. Avery, Bryan D. Watts, Martin S. Lowney

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Understanding the contributions of vital rates to species population growth is critical to developing new management protocols. We constructed a model population for black vultures (Coragyps atratus) in North Carolina, USA, based on demographic data from a 14-year study. The model population was similar in stage structure to the reference population, and adult survival was the primary contributor to the annual rate of increase (10.6%). We suggest that the North Carolina black vulture population is experiencing high rates of survival and fertility, potentially breeding at an age younger than previously assumed, and growing rapidly.

Development Of Informative Priors In Microarray Studies, Kassandra M. Fronczyk Jul 2007

Development Of Informative Priors In Microarray Studies, Kassandra M. Fronczyk

Theses and Dissertations

Microarrays measure the abundance of DNA transcripts for thousands of gene sequences, simultaneously facilitating genomic comparisons across tissue types or disease status. These experiments are used to understand fundamental aspects of growth and development and to explore the underlying genetic causes of many diseases. The data from most microarray studies are found in open-access online databases. Bayesian models are ideal for the analysis of microarray data because of their ability to integrate prior information; however, most current Bayesian analyses use empirical or flat priors. We present a Perl script to build an informative prior by mining online databases for similar …

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) has been implicated in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of chronic antidepressant (AD) treatment, although its role in the behavioral response is unclear. CREB-deficient (CREBαΔ mutant) mice demonstrate an antidepressant phenotype in the tail suspension test (TST) and forced-swim test. Here, we show that, at baseline, CREBαΔ mutant mice exhibited increased hippocampal cell proliferation and neurogenesis compared with wild-type (WT) controls, effects similar to those observed in WT mice after chronic desipramine (DMI) administration. Neurogenesis was not further augmented by chronic DMI treatment in CREBαΔ mutant mice. Serotonin depletion …

Treatment Decision-Making In Older Adults With Cancer, Maribeth Hercinger

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Decision-making for cancer treatment is becoming more and more complex and individuals are expected to be active participants in this process. As the diagnosis of cancer occurs more frequently among adults, health care professionals must be accountable to place a greater emphasis on assisting individuals with the difficult treatment decisions.

This study explored the experiences of older adults when making decisions for cancer treatment using a phenomenological approach. Thirteen in-depth, face-to-face interviews were completed with individuals who experienced a new diagnosis of cancer. Participants of the study included eight females and five males ages 51-83 years of age. Five major …
