Chronic Administration Of R-Flurbiprofen Attenuates Learning Impairments In Transgenic Amyloid Precursor Protein Mice, Thomas Kukar, Sonya Prescott, Jason L. Eriksen, Vallie Holloway, M. Paul Murphy, Edward H. Koo, Todd E. Golde, Michelle M. Nicolle

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others have shown that certain NSAIDs reduce secretion of Abeta42 in cell culture and animal models, and that the effect of NSAIDs on Abeta42 is independent of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase by these compounds. Since Abeta42 is hypothesized to be the initiating pathologic molecule in AD, the ability of these compounds to lower Abeta42 selectively may be associated with their protective effect. We have previously identified R-flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) as a selective Abeta42 lowering agent with greatly reduced cyclooxygenase activity that …

Included are lists a) of the mites organized taxonomically, b) hosts from which each species has been reported, and c) states and provinces citing references for each separate record.

Variable Selection For Nonparametric Varying-Coefficient Models For Analysis Of Repeated Measurements, Lifeng Wang, Hongzhe Li Jul 2007

Variable Selection For Nonparametric Varying-Coefficient Models For Analysis Of Repeated Measurements, Lifeng Wang, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Nonparametric varying-coefficient models are commonly used for analysis of data measured repeatedly over time, including longitudinal and functional responses data. While many procedures have been developed for estimating the varying-coefficients, the problem of variable selection for such models has not been addressed. In this article, we present a regularized estimation procedure for variable selection for such nonparametric varying-coefficient models using basis function approximations and a group smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (gSCAD). This gSCAD procedure simultaneously selects significant variables with time-varying effects and estimates unknown smooth functions using basis function approximations. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, we have …

Hunter-Gatherer Use Of Small Animal Food Resources: Coprolite Evidence, Karl J. Reinhard, J. R. Ambler, C. R. Szuter

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Faunal remains are commonly found in coprolites and provide direct evidence of animal consumption. An evaluation of hunter-gatherer coprolites from the Southwest United States shows that animal bone in coprolites can be used to assess patterns of hunting, food preparation, and general importance of small animals in diet. This is demonstrated by a comparison of faunal assemblages between two hunter-gatherer sites with respect to small animal hunting strategies. The sites are Dust Devil Cave on the Colorado Plateau, an Archaic winter habitation, and Hinds Cave, a warm season Archaic habitation in the lower Pecos of Texas. The results indicate that …

Will The Minute System Work To Modernize The International Boundary And Water Commission?, Annelia Tinklenberg Jul 2007

Will The Minute System Work To Modernize The International Boundary And Water Commission?, Annelia Tinklenberg

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), in its current form, was created in 1944 by the Treaty Regarding Utilization of Waters of Colorado and Tijuana Rivers and of the Rio Grande. The IBWC was given the authority to manage surface water along the US-Mexico border. Recent changes along the border have exposed a number of weaknesses in both the 1944 Water Treaty and the IBWC, making it difficult to resolve disputes. The challenges of administering the 1944 Water Treaty have escalated as population continues to grow, environmental concerns increase, water quality is jeopardized by sanitation inadequacies, groundwater resources are …

Monitoring And Assessment Of Sedimentation In Stream Channels Of New Mexico, Danielle M. Shuryn

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

This project is designed to examine how a change in field collection methods can improve the ability to recognize sedimentation/siltation impairments for wadeable, cobble and gravel dominated streams. The specific purpose of this project is to determine how well EPA's Western Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP-W) will accomplish the objectives of the New Mexico Environment Department's Surface Water Quality Bureau (SWQB): to quantify substrate and channel conditions as a potential stressor to aquatic life and to quantify physical channel characteristics in order to provide ecological context for biological response variable data sets. Data collected in 2006 expressed that it …

Thomas Carlyle, Fascism, And Frederick: From Victorian Prophet To Fascist Ideologue, Jonathon C. Mccollum Jul 2007

Thomas Carlyle, Fascism, And Frederick: From Victorian Prophet To Fascist Ideologue, Jonathon C. Mccollum

Theses and Dissertations

The Victorian Author Thomas Carlyle was in his day a meteoric voice but his popularity and reputation declined significantly due in part to his link to fascism. In the politically polarized era of the Second World War, academics and propagandists dubbed him a fascist or Nazi in both defamation and approval. Fascist scholars pressed Carlyle into service as a progenitor and prophet of their respective totalitarian regimes. Adolf Hitler, in his final days, assuaged his fears of his imminent fall with readings from Carlyle's History of Frederick the Great. This fascist connection to the once esteemed “Sage of Chelsea” marks …

The Exosome Subunit Rrp44 Plays A Direct Role In Rna Substrate Recognition, Claudia Schneider, James T. Anderson, David Tollervey

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The exosome plays key roles in RNA maturation and surveillance, but it is unclear how target RNAs are identified. We report the functional characterization of the yeast exosome component Rrp44, a member of the RNase II family. Recombinant Rrp44 and the purified TRAMP polyadenylation complex each specifically recognized tRNAiMet lacking a single m1A58 modification, even in the presence of a large excess of total tRNA. This tRNA is otherwise mature and functional in translation in vivo but is presumably subtly misfolded. Complete degradation of the hypomodified tRNA required both Rrp44 and the poly(A) polymerase activity …
