Quarternary Alluvial Deposition In The Upper Green River Valley, Kentucky, Juan Herrera Aug 2007

Quarternary Alluvial Deposition In The Upper Green River Valley, Kentucky, Juan Herrera

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research describes the alluvial deposits and Quaternary geomorphic evolution of the Upper Green River in Kentucky by documenting the nature of flood plain sediments at two sites along the valley bottom of the Upper Green River between Mammoth Cave National Park and Green River Lake. Field methods employed included stratigraphic descriptions of bank exposures and borings obtained in flood plain surfaces, along with textural and radiocarbon analysis of sediment samples. Sediment samples from boreholes and bank exposures in two study sites (Pitman Creek confluence, -PCC- and Upper Green River Biological Preserve -UGRBP-) were collected and sieved to determine grain …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

As the volume of information accessible via the electronic medium (such as the Internet) is staggeringly large and growing rapidly, users have to sift through vast reservoirs of information to retrieve relevant data of their choice. It has been estimated that, the Internet consists of 2.5 billion unique, publicly accessible web-pages and this figure is growing at an alarming rate of 7.3 million pages per day. Currently, the only way to wade through such colossal information is by using search engines (such as Google, Live, Yahoo, etc.). Although the popularity of search engines has increased manifold due to -- simplicity …

Sequence Alignment Editor - A New Tool To Assist With Inferring Phylogenetic And Functional Relationships In Biological Data, Ramya Raghukumar Aug 2007

Sequence Alignment Editor - A New Tool To Assist With Inferring Phylogenetic And Functional Relationships In Biological Data, Ramya Raghukumar

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Biologists study evolution, discover functional and structural information in genomic or protein data through the extensive use of sequence alignments. It is very difficult to manually align long regions, so development of methods for this task continues to be an active area of research. Alignment construction algorithms, based on dynamic programming, approach the problem from a mathematical perspective. The optimal alignment is computed relative to a scoring scheme. The resulting layout is guaranteed to be mathematically optimal, though not necessarily biologically meaningful. Sequence alignments usually account only for single letter substitutions and relatively short indels, representing the latter as gaps. …

Rate Of Diversification In Crickets (Orthoptera: Ensifera) And A Possible Role Of F Supergroup Wolbachia In Bush Crickets, Kanchana Panaram Aug 2007

Rate Of Diversification In Crickets (Orthoptera: Ensifera) And A Possible Role Of F Supergroup Wolbachia In Bush Crickets, Kanchana Panaram

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Part I: Rates of speciation can tell us more than how many species have survived over a period of time. They indicate whether there are some characteristics of organisms or biogeography scenarios facilitate or hinder speciation. Many groups of ensiferan insects (e.g. Hawaiian sword-tailed, North American ground and field crickets) have been reported to have rapid speciation rates. To investigate whether the pattern of rapid speciation is common in crickets, we estimated overall diversification rates as a whole and within the clade. Ensifera as a whole does not appear to have particularly rapid diversification rates compared to other insect suborders. …

Exogenous Farnesol Interferes With The Normal Progression Of Cytokine Expression During Candidiasis In A Mouse Model, Dhammika H. M. L. P. Navarathna, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Gerald E. Duhamel, Thomas R. Jerrels, Thomas M. Petro Aug 2007

Exogenous Farnesol Interferes With The Normal Progression Of Cytokine Expression During Candidiasis In A Mouse Model, Dhammika H. M. L. P. Navarathna, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Gerald E. Duhamel, Thomas R. Jerrels, Thomas M. Petro

Papers in Microbiology

Candida albicans, a dimorphic fungus composed of yeast and mycelial forms, is the most common human fungal pathogen. Th1 cytokines such as interleukin-2 (IL-2), gamma interferon (IFN-γ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), which are induced by macrophage IL-12, are critical to resistance against systemic candidiasis, while Th2 cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-5 are less critical. Farnesol is a quorum-sensing molecule produced by C. albicans that controls the formation of mycelia but is also a virulence factor. To determine whether farnesol enhances the virulence of C. albicans by modulating the production of Th1 and Th2 cytokines, mice were …

Charting A Discursive Field: Environmentalists For U.S. Population Stabilization, Leslie King Aug 2007

Charting A Discursive Field: Environmentalists For U.S. Population Stabilization, Leslie King

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article seeks to extend our understanding of the forces that shape social movement messages. Using a framework that focuses on a movement’s discursive field, I analyze the U.S. movement for population stabilization, which is made up of groups that call for stricter limits on immigration to the United States as a means to forestall environmental decline. Drawing upon data from a range of sources, including the Web sites of 10 environment-oriented immigration-reduction organizations, I make the case that this movement’s particular field is composed of the discursive repertoires (or messages) of a set of environmental and nonenvironmental social actors …

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander Aug 2007

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander

All Theses

This thesis examines the same-sex marriage debate within the Republican Party and how the Family Research Council and the Log Cabin Republicans construct their rhetorical arguments using Aristotelian appeals. By defining the debate according to Lloyd Bitzer's rhetorical situation, this thesis considers the rhetorical sustainability of these organizations' claims about same-sex marriage and the implications for the future of the Republican Party.
The United States is witnessing the increasing presence of gays and lesbians in the media and everyday life. The history of homosexuals living their lives behind closed doors is becoming a thing of the past. As a result …

Jansen, Hong Luo, Jeffrey Tomkins, Odd Arne Rognli, Henry Daniell, Jihong Liu Clarke

Publications

Comparisons of complete chloroplast genome sequences of Hordeum vulgare, Sorghum bicolor and Agrostis stolonifera to six published grass chloroplast genomes reveal that gene content and order are similar but two microstructural changes have occurred. First, the expansion of the IR at the SSC/IRa boundary that duplicates a portion of the 5′ end of ndhH is restricted to the three genera of the subfamily Pooideae (Agrostis, Hordeum and Triticum). Second, a 6 bp deletion in ndhK is shared by Agrostis, Hordeum, Oryza and Triticum, and this event supports the sister relationship between the subfamilies …

Bill Rodgers: Environmental Law's Captain Planet, Richard J. Lazarus Aug 2007

Bill Rodgers: Environmental Law's Captain Planet, Richard J. Lazarus

Washington Law Review

I have long thought of Bill Rodgers as environmental law's own "Captain Planet." There is, at the outset, the striking physical resemblance, which is well nigh conclusive. The square jaw and shoulders. The strong, confident look. And, of course, the hair, complete with the signature flip down onto the forehead. Sheer coincidence? I think not. But the proof of identity is far more extensive than mere similarity in outward physical appearances. For four decades, Bill Rodgers has been environmental law's oracle and steward. His encyclopedic knowledge of the substance of environmental law is legendary. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary …

Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay And Complexity Theory: Why The Precautionary Principle, Not Cost-Benefit Analysis, Makes More Sense As A Regulatory Approach, Hope M. Babcock

Washington Law Review

"[H]istory reveals not merely that change is real but also that change is various. All change is not the same, nor are all changes equal. Some changes are cyclical, some are not. Some changes are linear, others are not. Some changes take an afternoon to accomplish, some a millennium. We can no more take any particular kind of change as absolutely normative than we can take any particular state of equilibrium as normative .... The challenge is to determine which changes are in our enlightened self-interest and are consistent with our most rigorous ethical reasoning, always remembering our inescapable dependency …

Piecemeal Delisting: Designating Distinct Population Segments For The Purpose Of Delisting Gray Wolf Populations Is Arbitrary And Capricious, Nicole M. Tadano Aug 2007

Piecemeal Delisting: Designating Distinct Population Segments For The Purpose Of Delisting Gray Wolf Populations Is Arbitrary And Capricious, Nicole M. Tadano

Washington Law Review

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) protects species that are in danger of extinction "throughout all or a significant portion of its range." After thirty-three years of protection by the ESA, the gray wolf is gradually recovering from the brink of extinction. Pressure to remove protections for existing gray wolf populations has mounted as human interests have increasingly conflicted with the gray wolfs resurgence. Most courts have defined the phrase "significant portion of its range" in the ESA to mean the historical range of a species. This interpretation is consistent with the legislative history of the ESA and the historical listing …

The Interpretation And Memory Of Places For Segregated Education: A Comparative Analysis, Sandi Feaster Aug 2007

The Interpretation And Memory Of Places For Segregated Education: A Comparative Analysis, Sandi Feaster

All Theses

One of the greatest tasks before the United States at the end of the Civil War was to educate the freed slave. Even though efforts to educate African Americans existed long before the beginning of the war, those efforts were often clandestine and illegal in Southern states. After the war ended, this endeavor was undertaken by various religious denominations, philanthropic Northerners, and the newly created public schools systems within Southern states. Many schools were constructed to provide segregated education, often with one or two rooms for instruction, but sometimes including multi-building campuses. These buildings and campuses served as beacons in …

Human Mst But Not Mt Responds To Tactile Stimulation, Michael S. Beauchamp, Nafi E. Yasar, Neel Kishan, Tony Ro Aug 2007

Human Mst But Not Mt Responds To Tactile Stimulation, Michael S. Beauchamp, Nafi E. Yasar, Neel Kishan, Tony Ro

Publications and Research

Previous reports of tactile responses in human visual area MT/V5 have used complex stimuli, such as a brush stroking the arm. These complex moving stimuli are likely to induce imagery of visual motion, which is known to be a powerful activator of MT. The area described as “MT” in previous reports consists of at least two distinct cortical areas, MT and MST. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we separately localized human MT and MST and measured their response to vibrotactile stimuli unlikely to induce imagery of visual motion. Strong vibrotactile responses were observed in MST but not in MT. Vibrotactile …

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and increased oxidative DNA damage has been observed in brain tissue from AD patients. Base excision repair (BER) is the primary DNA repair pathway for small base modifications such as alkylation, deamination and oxidation. In this study, we have investigated alterations in the BER capacity in brains of AD patients. We employed a set of functional assays to measure BER activities in brain tissue from short post-mortem interval autopsies of 10 sporadic AD patients and 10 age-matched controls. BER activities were also measured in brain …
