Genetic Determinants Of Reproductive Isolation In Xenopus, John Malone
Genetic Determinants Of Reproductive Isolation In Xenopus, John Malone
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Haldane's rule states that in F1 interspecific hybrids the heterogametic sex (XY or ZW) suffers the most dysfunctional effects of hybridization. Frogs of the genus Xenopus have ZW sex determination yet hybrid males are completely sterile and hybrid females are fertile, a pattern exactly opposite of Haldane's rule. One of the most compelling hypotheses to explain this pattern is faster male evolution. The faster male evolution hypothesis suggests that hybrid male sterility is more common than hybrid female sterility because of faster divergence of male reproductive genes (due to sexual selection), or inherent sensitivity with the process of spermatogenesis. This …
Monte Carlo Analysis Of Refuge Site Selection: Statistical Properties And An Empirical Example, Anna Michelle Lawing
Monte Carlo Analysis Of Refuge Site Selection: Statistical Properties And An Empirical Example, Anna Michelle Lawing
Biology Theses - Archive
The Monte Carlo method can be a useful technique providing information on central tendencies and tolerance for selection data. There are many statistical hypothesis tests that are employed in selection studies, but most require the data are normally distributed to adhere to the null hypothesis based on a normal distribution. Monte Carlo methods build a null distribution to test hypotheses based on available conditions and therefore do not require distributions of data to be normal. A Monte Carlo is also an extremely flexible technique and can be designed to test hypotheses for any particular experimental design. I designed a Monte …
Tillage And Rotation Effect On Corn–Soybean Energy Balances In Eastern Nebraska, G.-W. Rathke, Brian Wienhold, Wallace Wilhelm, W. Diepenbrock
Tillage And Rotation Effect On Corn–Soybean Energy Balances In Eastern Nebraska, G.-W. Rathke, Brian Wienhold, Wallace Wilhelm, W. Diepenbrock
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Data from a field experiment conducted in eastern Nebraska over 16 years (1986–2001) were used to determine the energy balance of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) as affected by tillage treatments and rotation. Tillage treatments included chisel plow, tandem disk, moldboard plow, ridge-tillage, no-till and subsoil tillage. Crop sequences were continuous corn, continuous soybean, corn in a corn–soybean rotation and soybean in a soybean–corn rotation. The energy balance was assessed by comparing the parameters: energy gain (net energy output), energy intensity (energy input per unit grain equivalent, GE) and output/input ratio. Changes in plant …

Science Inquiry Learning Environments Created By National Board Certified Teachers., Jon Saderholm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discern what differences exist between the science inquiry learning environments created by National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and non-NBCTs. Four research questions organized the data collection and analysis: (a) How do National Board Certified science teachers' knowledge of the nature of science differ from that of their non-NBCT counterparts? (b) How do the frequencies of student science inquiry behaviors supported by in middle/secondary learning environments created by NBCTs differ from those created by their non-NBCT counterparts? (c) What is the relationship between the frequency of students' science inquiry behaviors and their science reasoning …
Cone Beam Computed Tomographic Simulation Of Panoramic Radiology : Third Molar Assessment And Mandibular Canal., Ryan L. Snyder
Cone Beam Computed Tomographic Simulation Of Panoramic Radiology : Third Molar Assessment And Mandibular Canal., Ryan L. Snyder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the research is to determine if cone beam computerized tomography reconstructed panoramic radiography viewed in two different focal trough shapes, and three different focal trough widths changes the ability to identify high risk radiologic signs associated with an intimate anatomic relationship between third molars and the Inferior Alveolar Nerve. The basic assumption of this research is that a customized focal trough shape with a wider focal trough width at the third molar region will produce more high risk radiologic signs present when there is a relation between the third molar and the Inferior Alveolar Canal. A retrospective …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was to investigate the relationships between school climate, school culture, teacher efficacy, collective efficacy, teacher job satisfaction and intent to turnover in the context of year-round education (YRE) calendars. The research design of this study utilized an e-mail invitation to participate with a uniform resource locator (URL) embedded in the message to link participants to an internet-based questionnaire. The questionnaire was delivered to 1,254 teachers employed in nine participating school districts in Kentucky that operated on YRE school calendars. The response rate was 60%. Teachers ( N = 748) responded to an internet-based questionnaire consisting …
A Theory-Based Intervention To Increase Dental Utilization By Disadvantaged Children., Catherine J. Binkley
A Theory-Based Intervention To Increase Dental Utilization By Disadvantaged Children., Catherine J. Binkley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oral disease is the greatest unmet healthcare need of disadvantaged children in the United States, with only 20% of disadvantaged Medicaid-eligible children receiving routine dental care. Peter Margolis proposed a theoretical model of access to healthcare services and reported the effectiveness of a case manager intervention in increasing medical care utilization by disadvantaged mothers and infants. This study was based on Margolis's theory and used a case manager to assist parents in obtaining dental care. Methods. The study was based on secondary analyses of data from the "Parental Help Seeking for Dental Care" project. The randomized, controlled intervention study was …

Comparative Linear Accuracy And Reliability Of Cone Beam Ct Derived 2-Dimensional And 3-Dimensional Images Constructed Using An Orthodontic Volumetric Rendering Program., Danielle R. Periago
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to compare the accuracy and reliability of linear measurements made on 2D projections and 3D reconstructions using Dolphin 3D software (Chatsworth, CA) as compared to direct measurements made on human skulls. The linear dimensions between 6 bilateral and 8 mid-sagittal anatomical landmarks on 23 dentate dry human skulls were measured three times by multiple observers using a digital caliper to provide twenty orthodontic linear measurements. The skulls were stabilized and imaged via PSP digital cephalometry as well as CBCT. The PSP cephalograms were imported into Dolphin (Chatsworth, CA, USA) and the 3D volumetric data …
Challenges And Information Needs Of Organic Growers And Retailers, Gerad Middendorf
Challenges And Information Needs Of Organic Growers And Retailers, Gerad Middendorf
Journal of Extension
Growth in consumer interest in organically grown foods has opened new market opportunities for producers and retailers. This in turn implies an increased need for information specific to organic production, processing, marketing, and retail as growers and retailers increase their activities in this market. This article describes a research effort in east-central Kansas to assess the information needs in the organic sector. Data are drawn from focus groups and individual interviews with growers and retailers of organic foods. Implications for research and Extension programs, especially in the central Plains states, are discussed.

Constructivism In Early Childhood Education, Joseph Mills
Constructivism In Early Childhood Education, Joseph Mills
Perspectives In Learning
At most universities and colleges, a form of constructivism based on child psychological theories dominates the stage as the “official knowledge pre-service early childhood teachers must know to be proclaimed competent” (Livingston, 2003, p. 3). Why, then, have the understandings of how children learn and the teaching practices suggested by this theory not taken root in many early childhood classrooms? In attempting to answer this question through a review of current literature in the field, three topics of discussion have been suggested: an explanation of the development and learning theories which support constructivism, identifying classroom practices which are considered to …

Prediction Of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Phosphorylation Substrates, Emmanuel J. Chang, Rashida Begum, Brian T. Chait, Terry Gaasterland
Publications and Research
Protein phosphorylation, mediated by a family of enzymes called cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks), plays a central role in the cell-division cycle of eukaryotes. Phosphorylation by Cdks directs the cell cycle by modifying the function of regulators of key processes such as DNA replication and mitotic progression. Here, we present a novel computational procedure to predict substrates of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdc28 (Cdk1) in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Currently, most computational phosphorylation site prediction procedures focus solely on local sequence characteristics. In the present procedure, we model Cdk substrates based on both local and global characteristics of the substrates. Thus, we define the …
Species-Specific Visitation And Removal Of Baits For Delivery Of Pharmaceuticals To Feral Swine, Tyler A. Campbell, David B. Long
Species-Specific Visitation And Removal Of Baits For Delivery Of Pharmaceuticals To Feral Swine, Tyler A. Campbell, David B. Long
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Within the domestic swine industry there is growing trepidation about the role feral swine (Sus scrofa) play in the maintenance and transmission of important swine diseases. Innovative disease management tools for feral swine are needed. We used field trials conducted in southern Texas from February to March 2006 to compare species-specific visitation and removal rates of fish-flavored and vegetable-flavored baits with and without commercially available raccoon (Procyon lotor/) repellent (trial 1) and removal rates of baits deployed in a systematic and cluster arrangement (trial 2). During trial 1, 1) cumulative bait removal rates after four nights …
Recovery In A Cynical Time—With Apologies To Eric Arthur Blair, Dale D. Goble
Recovery In A Cynical Time—With Apologies To Eric Arthur Blair, Dale D. Goble
Washington Law Review
The drafters of the Endangered Species Act envisioned a process in which a species at risk of extinction would be protected while the threats it faces are removed so that it recovers. Over the first three decades of experience with the Act, implementation has proved to be far more complex. Recovering at-risk species imposes two different types of requirements. Biologically, recovery is a demographic problem: the species's population must have increased in numbers and dispersed geographically to a point at which nature's random risks have been reduced so that the species is no longer in danger of extinction. The risk-management …

An Investigation Of The Genetic Variation Between Blissus Occiduus Barber And Blissus Leucopterus Leucopterus (Say), Lanae M. Pierson, Rosana Serikawa, Tiffany Heng-Moss, John E. Foster
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
In Nebraska, there are two chinch bug species that are of major economic importance: the common chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say) and the western chinch bug, B. occiduus Barber. The lack of key morphological characters to accurately differentiate between these two species in the immature stage and their extensive overlap of plant hosts and geographic distribution underscore the need to identify molecular markers to distinguish between these two chinch bugs. The objective of this research was to investigate the genetic diversity between B. l. leucopterus and B. occiduus using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP). Five primer combinations were selected …
Comparative Dynamics Of Magnetically, Acoustically, And Brownian Motion Driven Microcantilevers In Liquids, Xin Xu, Arvind Raman
Comparative Dynamics Of Magnetically, Acoustically, And Brownian Motion Driven Microcantilevers In Liquids, Xin Xu, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
Magnetic, acoustic, and thermal (Brownian motion induced) excitations are commonly used for dynamic atomic force microscopy (AFM) in liquids, yet the fundamental differences in microcantilever vibration response for these different excitations remain poorly understood. In this work we discuss theoretically and experimentally several major differences between the amplitude and phase response of magnetically, acoustically, and thermally excited cantilevers in liquids and propose a way to estimate quantitatively the unsteady structure-borne and fluid-borne excitation forces acting on the acoustically excited AFM cantilever. The results have significant implications both for amplitude and frequency modulated AFM operation in liquids.
