Etymology Of The Earwigfly, Merope Tuber Newman (Mecoptera: Meropeidae): Simply Dull Or Just Inscrutable?, Louis A. Somma, James C. Dunford

Insecta Mundi

The naturalist Edward Newman did not provide an etymology for the mecopteran Merope tuber when he described it in 1838. In 1872 Asa Fitch asserted that the genus was named after Merope one of the Pleiades sisters of Greek mythology; however, he provided no reason for his assumption. We researched several etymological alternatives. We concur with Fitch and conclude that Newman did indeed name the genus Merope after the dullest of the Pleiades sisters.

Generic Limits Of The Rhyparini With Respect To The Genus Termitodius Wasmann, 1894 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae), Paul E. Skelley Aug 2007

Generic Limits Of The Rhyparini With Respect To The Genus Termitodius Wasmann, 1894 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae), Paul E. Skelley

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Three distinct tibial types are recognized within the Rhyparini (Scarabaeidae, Aphodiinae). Based on this, generic limits for the species of Termitodius Wasmann are reevaluated, with the Old World members being transferred to Termitodiellus Nakane. The resulting new combinations are: Termitodiellus besucheti (Paulian), Termitodiellus hammondi (Krikken and Huijbregts), Termitodiellus interruptus (Krikken and Huijbregts), Termitodiellus luzonensis (Howden), Termitodiellus monticola (Krikken and Huijbregts). New World members of Termitodius are split into two genera: Termitodius Wasmann and Aschnarhyparus Makhan. Aschnarhyparus soesilae Makhan is here relegated to a junior synonym of Termitodius peregrinus Hinton, new synonymy, with the resulting new combination being Aschnarhyparus peregrinus (Hinton). …

The Psbp Protein Is Required For Photosystem Ii Complex Assembly/Stability And Photoautotrophy In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Xiaoping Yi, Stefan R. Hargett, Haijun Liu, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Faculty Publications

Interfering RNA was used to suppress the expression of the genes At1g06680 and At2g30790 in Arabidopsis thaliana, which encode the PsbP-1 and PsbP-2 proteins, respectively, of photosystem II (PS II). A phenotypic series of transgenic plants was recovered that expressed intermediate and low amounts of PsbP. Chlorophyll fluorescence induction and QA- decay kinetics analyses were performed. Decreasing amounts of expressed PsbP protein led to the progressive loss of variable fluorescence and a marked decrease in the fluorescence quantum yield (FV/FM). This was primarily due to the loss of the J to I transition. Analysis of the fast fluorescence rise kinetics …

Rapid Phase Adjustment Of Melatonin And Core Body Temperature Rhythms Following A 6-H Advance Of The Light/Dark Cycle In The Horse, Barbara A. Murphy, Jeffrey A. Elliott, Dawn R. Sessions, Mandi M. Vick, Erin L. Kennedy, Barry P. Fitzgerald

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Rapid displacement across multiple time zones results in a conflict between the new cycle of light and dark and the previously entrained program of the internal circadian clock, a phenomenon known as jet lag. In humans, jet lag is often characterized by malaise, appetite loss, fatigue, disturbed sleep and performance deficit, the consequences of which are of particular concern to athletes hoping to perform optimally at an international destination. As a species renowned for its capacity for athletic performance, the consequences of jet lag are also relevant for the horse. However, the duration and severity of jet lag related …

Bolivia: Biomass Gasification, Eric White, Josh Heyne Aug 2007

Bolivia: Biomass Gasification, Eric White, Josh Heyne

ETHOS Technical Reports

In the summer of 2007 two students travelled to La Paz Bolivia to work with the company Prolena. During their stay in Bolivia the students designed, built, and tested a biomass gasifier with the goal of providing 40kW of heat for a variety of heating purposes.

After a brief period of experimentation to build firsthand experience with biomass gasifiers, the students were able to design a first model. This model was modified and rebuilt three times over the summer in order to optimize various parameters such as fluid flows, preheating zones, as well as the amount of air available for …

Prospect-Refuge Theory Revisited: A Search For Safety In Dynamic Public Spaces With A Reference To Design, Priti Ramanujam

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Prospect-refuge theory (Appleton 1975) is based on habitat theory (Darwin 1958) which states that the ability to see (prospect) but not be seen (refuge) is basic to many biological needs. According to Appleton, the ability to see without being seen increases perceived safety which increases the esthetic pleasure experienced in the environment. Wekerle and Egan (1991) state that the perception of safety is necessary for feelings of enjoyment and comfort in urban open space. Appleton's hypothesized factors--prospect and refuge--are known to affect people's perception of how safe an environment appears to be. This thesis studies perception of safety in dynamic …

The Benefits Of Bathing Buds: Water Calyces Protect Flowers From A Microlepidopteran Herbivore, Jane E. Carlson, Kyle E. Harms Aug 2007

The Benefits Of Bathing Buds: Water Calyces Protect Flowers From A Microlepidopteran Herbivore, Jane E. Carlson, Kyle E. Harms

Faculty Publications

Protective floral structures may evolve in response to the negative effects of floral herbivores. For example, water calyces - liquid-filled, cup-like structures resulting from the fusion of sepals - may reduce floral herbivory by submerging buds during their development. Our observations of a water-calyx plant, Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana (Gesneriaceae), revealed that buds were frequently attacked by ovipositing moths (Alucitidae), whose larvae consumed anthers and stigmas before corollas opened. Almost 25% of per-plant flower production was destroyed by alucitid larvae over two seasons, far exceeding the losses to all other floral herbivores combined. Experimental manipulation of water levels in calyces showed that …

Spider Mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) Mitochondrial Coi Phylogeny Reviewed: Host Plant Relationships, Phylogeography, Reproductive Parasites And Barcoding, Vera I.D. Ros, Johannes A.J. Breeuwer

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The past 15 years have witnessed a number of molecular studies that aimed to resolve issues of species delineation and phylogeny of mites in the family Tetranychidae. The central part of the mitochondrial COI region has frequently been used for investigating intra- and interspeciWc variation. All these studies combined yield an extensive database of sequence information of the family Tetranychidae. We assembled this information in a single alignment and performed an overall phylogenetic analysis. The resulting phylogeny shows that important patterns have been overlooked in previous studies, whereas others disappear. It also reveals that mistakes were made in submitting the …
