Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira Aug 2007

Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Paleoparasitology has contributed to resolving the debate about the peopling of the Americas and determining the antiquity of human parasite infection. Hookworm (Ancylostomidae) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and other exclusive human intestinal parasites have been recorded in pre-Columbian America. These parasite species originated in pre-hominids and have accompanied humans across continents when people went out of Africa. However, for those human populations that crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska, cold climate conditions hampered parasite transmission. Alternative migration routes have been proposed to explain the presence of these parasites in pre-Columbian populations in the Americas. Other …

Comparative Analysis Of Environmental Kuznets Curve In Central And Eastern Europe And South And East Asia, Yu-Chin Pang

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Environmental deterioration has frequently been viewed as a problem that inevitably accompanies economic development and industrialization. However, different economic backgrounds might experience different kinds and levels of environmental deterioration. This study investigated environmental deterioration in two groups of countries with comparable income levels but different economic backgrounds-transitional Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and non-transitional South and East Asian (SEA) countries.

This research utilized the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis to explain the relationships among macroeconomic indicators, country categories, and atmospheric concentrations in the CEE and SEA regions. Three research questions and six hypotheses and related sub-hypotheses were answered and tested …

Working Trees For Wildlife Aug 2007

Working Trees For Wildlife

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Sustaining quality wildlife habitat is challenging, especially where agricultural fields offer little plant diversity and in suburban areas where human development has fragmented the landscape.

Increasingly, these areas are managed primarily for people. But, an amazing variety of animals call the same areas home and depend on us to make sure that their needs are met.

Working Trees are trees and shrubs, especially native species, that are in the right place to do a specific job. Whether Working Trees come in the form of a windbreak to enhance crop or livestock production or a riparian forest buffer to filter storm …

Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin Aug 2007

Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin

Theses and Dissertations

Rasch is a mathematical model that allows researchers to compare data that measure a unidimensional trait or ability (Bond & Fox, 2007). When data fit the Rasch model, it is mathematically proven that the item difficulty estimates are independent of the sample of respondents. The purpose of this study was to test the robustness of the Rasch model with regards to its ability to maintain invariant item difficulty estimates when real (data that does not perfectly fit the Rasch model), polytomous scored data is used. The data used in this study comes from a university alumni questionnaire that was collected …

Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber Aug 2007

Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In 1987 the Clean Water Act (CWA) was amended to address non-point sources through the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program, which was divided into Phase I and Phase II. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a NPDES Phase I permit applicant, which requires them to monitor their facilities for specific water quality parameters. Effective and affordable treatment of highway runoff is a significant concern, because various pollutants found in non-point source runoff can impact the overall health of a watershed. Furthermore, many factors influence the types and concentrations of pollutants found in stormwater and the various types …

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen Aug 2007

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

A large body of evidence suggests interpersonal environments of women with postpartum depression are impaired. However, it is unclear whether postpartum anxiety is associated with similar psychosocial impairment, particularly relating to parental and relationship functioning. Many studies examining postpartum anxiety have been cross-sectional in nature rendering it difficult to make long-term predictions about functioning of anxious mothers and their families. The present study was one of few longitudinal studies examining the relation between postpartum anxiety and long-term psychosocial functioning. Mothers reporting significant anxiety (n = 20) and mothers denying significant anxiety and depression (i.e., control mothers; n = 35) at …

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad Aug 2007

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, combats the host immune response by injecting proteins called Yops "Yersinia outer proteins" into the eukaryotic host cells using a type III secretion system "T3SS". The activity of the type T3SS is regulated by several proteins including YscF, YopN, TyeA, SycN, YscB, LcrG, and LcrV. YscF forms the extracellular needle complex of the T3SS and is involved in secretion regulation and in sensing environmental signals for secretion activation. YopN, TyeA, SycN, and YscB form a complex in the cytosol of Y. pestis that blocks the secretion of Yops when conditions do not favor …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit Aug 2007

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit

Theses and Dissertations

To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Identification Of The Interaction And Co-Localization Of Leishmania Adenine Nucleotide Translocase With Tor, Rania Elsabrouty Aug 2007

Identification Of The Interaction And Co-Localization Of Leishmania Adenine Nucleotide Translocase With Tor, Rania Elsabrouty

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmania species are parasitic protozoa of the order Kinetoplastida that cause leishmaniasis. Treatment of leishmaniasis with antimonials is difficult and resistance is increasing. Alternative compounds have been investigated, one group is the toxic purine analogs. Resistance to purine analogs, potential anti-Leishmania agents, is brought about by TOR (TOxic nucleoside Resistance protein). TOR is an atypical, multidrug resistance protein that was originally discovered in Leishmania. It renders the cells less sensitive to toxic nucleosides by curtailing the ability of the nucleoside permeases to transport purines across the plasma membrane. Targets of TOR (TOT's) are proteins inside Leishmania that interact with and/or …

Celebrity Justice: What We (And Our Students) Learn From Hollywood Star’S Run-Ins With The Law, Alafair Burke, Joanna Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Lately, the public has been receiving a detailed legal education from an unlikely source - the legal run-ins of celebrities. A recent incident provides a case in point:

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on July 20, 2007, actress/tabloid sensation Lindsay Lohan walked quietly into a Beverly Hills police station to face formal arrest for DUI and misdemeanor hit-and-run. The charges were a consequence of her single-car accident over Memorial Day weekend. As is routine for first time DUI defendants, she was released on her own recognizance.

Experience Leads To Preference: Experienced Females Prefer Brush-Legged Males In A Population Of Syntopic Wolf Spiders, Eileen Hebets, Cor J. Vink Aug 2007

Experience Leads To Preference: Experienced Females Prefer Brush-Legged Males In A Population Of Syntopic Wolf Spiders, Eileen Hebets, Cor J. Vink

Eileen Hebets Publications

Sexual selection has long been recognized as a potential contributor to the divergence in reproductive characters that ultimately leads to speciation. Schizocosa ocreata and Schizocosa rovneri wolf spiders embody a classic example of species divergence resulting from such sexual selection, as they are reproductively isolated by courtship behavior alone. Here, we characterize a newly discovered population of wolf spiders in which brush-legged males (sensu S. ocreata) and non-ornamented males (sensu S. rovneri) are found syntopically. Mitochondrial sequence data (cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) indicate that the 2 male forms are not reciprocally monophyletic. We exposed subadult females from this …

Performance Analysis Of Capture Of Heat Energy From Diesel Engine Exhaust, Prasada Rao Raghupatruni Aug 2007

Performance Analysis Of Capture Of Heat Energy From Diesel Engine Exhaust, Prasada Rao Raghupatruni

Engineering

Diesel generators produce electrical power. New diesel generators, which use turbochargers, release a significant amount of heat energy from the turbocharger after coolers. Another significant amount of heat energy released from diesel engines and normally not captured for useful applications is the heat released from exhaust manifolds. This project discusses the design, installation, instrumentation, performance measurement and performance analysis of an exhaust heat recovery system for a new diesel generator, which has injection timing control. A diesel generator releases about one-third of its fuel energy in exhaust heat. The main aspect of this project is to study heat recovery from …

Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce Aug 2007

Relationships Between Brown Bears And Chum Salmon At Mcneil River, Alaska, Joshua Mcallister Peirce

Biological Sciences

Since 1967, the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary (MRSGS) has been managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to 'provide permanent protection for brown bears'. Up to 144 bears have been identified in a summer at MRSGS, and 72 bears at once have been observed in the vicinity of McNeil Falls. In this study, 155 chum salmon were radio tagged as they entered McNeil River and monitored daily. In 2005 and 2006 bears killed 48% of pre-spawning tagged chum salmon and consumed 99% of all tagged chums below McNeil Falls where most of the run occurs. A retrospective …

Phosphorylation-Induced Conformational Switching Of Cpi-17 Produces A Potent Myosin Phosphatase Inhibitor, Masumi Eto, Toshio Kitazawa, Fumiko Matsuzawa, Sei-Ichi Aikawa, Jason A. Kirkbride, Noriyoshi Isozumi, Yumi Nishimura, David L. Brautigan, Shin-Ya Ohki

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Phosphorylation of endogenous inhibitor proteins specific for type-1 Ser/Thr phosphatase (PP1) provides a mechanism for reciprocal coordination of kinase and phosphatase activities. Phosphorylation of Thr38 in the inhibitor protein CPI-17 transduces G-protein-mediated signaling into a > 1000-fold increase of inhibitory potency toward myosin phosphatase. We show here the solution NMR structure of phospho-T38-CPI-17 with r. m. s. d. of 0.36 ± 0.06 Å for the backbone secondary structure, which reveals how phosphorylation triggers a conformational change and exposes the PP1 inhibitory surface. This active conformation is stabilized by the formation of a hydrophobic core of intercalated side-chains, which is not formed …

Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey Aug 2007

Fish Bacterial Flora Identification Via Rapid Cellular Fatty Acid Analysis, Amit Morey

Fisheries

Seafood quality can be assessed by determining the bacterial load and flora composition, although classical taxonomic methods are time-consuming and subjective to interpretation bias. A two-prong approach was used to assess a commercially available microbial identification system: confirmation of known cultures and fish spoilage experiments to isolate unknowns for identification. Bacterial isolates from the Fishery Industrial Technology Center Culture Collection (FITCCC) and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) were used to test the identification ability of the Sherlock Microbial Identification System (MIS). Twelve ATCC and 21 FITCCC strains were identified to species with the exception of Pseudomonas fluorescens and P. …

Delineation Of Yakutat Foreland Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Stocks Using Otolith Chemistry, Matthew A. Jones Aug 2007

Delineation Of Yakutat Foreland Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Stocks Using Otolith Chemistry, Matthew A. Jones

Fisheries

Otolith chemistry was utilized to identify suspected coho salmon sub-stock populations on the Yakutat Foreland of southeast Alaska. In order to demonstrate that otolith chemistry might be successful in sub-stock differentiation, water samples were collected from four adjacent river systems and chemically segregated by collection site. Juvenile coho salmon and adult coho salmon were collected from the same four river systems and were subsequently analyzed for levels of select Ba, Ca, Mg, and Sr isotopes in all otolith edge and core regions using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Otolith Sr⁸⁷/Ca⁴⁸ and Mg²⁴/Ca⁴⁸ were used to segregate collection sites, identify sub-stock …

Seasonal Oceanographic Influences On Pacific Herring And Walleye Pollock Distribution And Abundance In Nearshore Embayments Of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mary E. Loewen Aug 2007

Seasonal Oceanographic Influences On Pacific Herring And Walleye Pollock Distribution And Abundance In Nearshore Embayments Of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mary E. Loewen

Fisheries

The importance of Alaskan embayments as adult walleye pollock and Pacific herring habitat is unknown. Seasonal hydroacoustic and trawl surveys were conducted in three oceanographically distinct bays to correlate abiotic and biotic habitat factors with nearshore fish distributions around Kodiak Island. Relationships between fish densities and sea surface temperature and salinity, bottom depth, zooplankton density and diversity, bottom temperature and salinity, and water column stratification were analyzed through General Additive Models (GAMs). Bathymetry and temperature were consistently included as important habitat variables. Relationships between fish density and habitat variables differed by season and location, suggesting factors defining preferred habitat vary …

Aquatic Community Responses To Stream Restoration: Effects Of Wood And Salmon Analog Additions, Aaron Eugene Martin Aug 2007

Aquatic Community Responses To Stream Restoration: Effects Of Wood And Salmon Analog Additions, Aaron Eugene Martin

Fisheries

Many aquatic ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest have been impacted by land use activities. Often these impacts have resulted in deleterious effects that directly or indirectly limited the capacity of habitat to produce fish. Habitat restoration potentially increases the quantity and quality of resources available to the aquatic communities within these impaired systems, thus increasing biotic integrity and fish production. In this study, responses of aquatic communities exposed to woody debris bundle and salmon analog additions were measured in the year following creation of off-channel, fish habitat in southcentral Alaska. Biofilm, invertebrates and juvenile coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, were sampled …
