Thalamic Gating Of Auditory Responses In Telencephalic Song Control Nuclei, Melissa J. Coleman, Arani Roy, J. Martin Wild, Richard Mooney
Thalamic Gating Of Auditory Responses In Telencephalic Song Control Nuclei, Melissa J. Coleman, Arani Roy, J. Martin Wild, Richard Mooney
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
In songbirds, nucleus Uvaeformis (Uva) is the sole thalamic input to the telencephalic nucleus HVC (used as a proper name), a sensorimotor structure essential to learned song production that also exhibits state dependent responses to auditory presentation of the bird’s own song (BOS). The role of Uva in influencing HVC auditory activity is unknown. Using in vivo extracellular and intracellular recordings in urethane-anesthetized zebra finches, we characterized the auditory properties of Uva and examined its influence on auditory activity in HVC and in the telencephalic nucleus interface (NIf), the main auditory afferent of HVC and a corecipient of Uva input. …

Oxygen Measurement Via Phosphorescence: Reaction Of Sodium Dithionite With Dissolved Oxygen, Zhimin Tao, Jerry Goodisman, Abdul-Kader Souid
Chemistry - All Scholarship
A homemade instrument for the measurement of oxygen concentration in aqueous solutions measures the decay rate of the phosphorescence of a Pd-porphyrin complex (phosphor) dissolved in the solution, which is flashed every 0.1 s with 630 nm light. The concentration of O 2 is a linear function of the decay rate. The instrument is used to study the reaction of dithionite (S 2O 4 2-) with O 2 at 25°C and 37°C. It is found that the ratio of dithionite to oxygen consumed in the reaction is 1.2 ± 0.2 at 25°C and 1.7 ± 0.1 at 37°C, …

Hybrid Micro-Electro-Mechanical Tunable Filter, Edward M. Ochoa
Hybrid Micro-Electro-Mechanical Tunable Filter, Edward M. Ochoa
Theses and Dissertations
While advantages such as good thermal stability and processing-chemical compatibilities exist for common monolithic-integrated micro-electro-mechanically tunable filters (MEM-TF) and MEM-tunable vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (MT-VCSEL), they often require full processing to determine device characteristics. Alternatively, the MEM actuators and the optical parts may be fabricated separately, then subsequently bonded. This "hybrid approach" potentially increases design flexibility. Since hybrid techniques allow integration of heterogeneous material systems, "best of breed" compound optoelectronic devices may be customized to enable materials groups to be optimized for tasks they are best suited. Thus, as a first step toward a hybrid (AlxGa1- …

Method And Apparatus For Blood Flow Measurement Using Millimeter Wave Band, David Nelson
Method And Apparatus For Blood Flow Measurement Using Millimeter Wave Band, David Nelson
Michigan Tech Patents
A system and method that determines a blood flow rate in an area of a subject. The system includes a transmitter operable to transmit an electrical signal in the range of about 20 GHz to about 300 GHz to the area, a temperature sensor positioned adjacent the area, and a processor operable to determine the blood flow rate in the area based on the rate of change of temperature in the area as a result of the application of the electrical signal on the area and a power density value.
Integration And Validation Of Networked Avian Radar (Ivar), Marissa Brand
Integration And Validation Of Networked Avian Radar (Ivar), Marissa Brand
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
A team of scientists and engineers from the federal government, industry, and academia is evaluating the ability of digital radar systems to identify and track biological targets and then validating these systems under realistic operational conditions. The Integration and Validation of Avian Radars (IVAR) project is funded by the Department of Defense Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. The eBirdRad radar unit utilizes off the shelf X-band marine radar coupled with advanced digital signal processing and tracking algorithms to process target information. The overall objectives of the IVAR project include: 1) the use of independent visual, thermal and other observations to …

An Overview Of Avian Radar Developments – Past, Present And Future, Tim J. Nohara, B. Eng, M. Eng, Peter Weber, Andrew Ukrainec, Al Premji, Graeme Jones
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
The objective of this paper is to stand back and take an organized look at these developments in avian radar technology, with a view towards improving our understanding of this complex tool set. By reviewing the past, a context will be provided within which one can better appreciate what has been accomplished in the present, and where technology and products still need to go in the future. It is hoped that a better understanding will assist stakeholders in making the best use of these tools, today and tomorrow.

A Successful Case Study: The Bird Control Program Of Waste Management Outer Loop Recycling And Disposal Facility, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa, Russell P. Defusco
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 9th (2007)
Landfills and airports have a long history of incompatibility. Birds are attracted to landfills for various reasons including food sources, habitat, and orographic lift. Since landfills can be avian attractants, they are required to be sited at least 10,000 feet away from commercial airports in the United States. Waste Management of Kentucky (WMK) operates a municipal landfill and recycling facility -- the Outer Loop Recycling and Disposal Facility (OLRDF) located less than 1.5 miles south of the Louisville Standiford airport which, as the hub airport for United Parcel Service, is the fourth largest cargo airport in the U.S. As part …

Intrafield Patterns Of Wildlife Damage To Corn And Soybeans In Northern Indiana, Travis L. Devault, James C. Beasley, Lee A. Humberg, Brian J. Macgowan, Monica I. Retamosa, Olin E. Rhodes Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Management programs aimed at reducing wildlife damage to row crops rely on information concerning the spatial nature of wildlife damage at local and landscape scales. In this study we explored spatial patterns of wildlife damage within individual corn and soybean fields by describing relationships between specific locations where wildlife damage was recorded and distances from such locations to various habitat types that presumably influenced animal abundance and movements in our study area. Using stratified random sampling, we conducted depredation surveys of 100 corn fields and 60 soybean fields from May through October both in 2003 and 2004 and recorded the …

Novel mouse models were developed in which the hepatic selenoprotein population was targeted for removal by disrupting the selenocysteine (Sec) tRNA [Ser]Sec gene (trsp) and then selenoprotein expression was restored by introducing wild type or mutant trsp transgenes. The selenoprotein population was partially replaced in liver with mutant transgenes encoding mutations at either position 34 (T34->A34) or 37 (A37->G37) in tRNA [Ser]Sec. The A34 transgene product lacked the highly modified 5-methoxycarbonylmethyl-2’ O-methyluridine and its mutant base A was converted to I34. The G37 transgene product lacked the highly modified N6-isopentenyladenosine. Both mutant tRNAs …
