The Role Of Communication Channel, Feedback Valence And Cultural Differences In Performance Appraisal Outcomes, James C. Matchen Sep 2007

The Role Of Communication Channel, Feedback Valence And Cultural Differences In Performance Appraisal Outcomes, James C. Matchen

Dissertations

The effects of feedback valence (positive or negative) across culture (Individualistic or Collectivistic) for both the verbal and nonverbal communication channels on performance appraisal outcomes were investigated. It was hypothesized that participants would react differently to the performance appraisal they received based on (1) their own cultural values and on (2) the valence of the verbal feedback and nonverbal feedback provided by the manager. Main effects of both verbal feedback valence and nonverbal feedback valence were predicted and found. Participants reported more positive reactions to both the performance appraisal process and to the manager after receiving positive feedback than after …

Conformational Control Of Selectivity In The Dienone-Phenol Rearrangement, Anne M. Sauer, William E. Crowe, Gregg Henderson, Roger A. Laine Sep 2007

Conformational Control Of Selectivity In The Dienone-Phenol Rearrangement, Anne M. Sauer, William E. Crowe, Gregg Henderson, Roger A. Laine

Faculty Publications

We have explored the dienone-phenol rearrangement of substrates where: only the p-cresol pathway is possible and relative migratory aptitudes should play no role in determining the regiochemistry of the reaction. For these substrates the selectivity of the rearrangement was found to depend on the stereochemistry of the spirocyclic intermediate formed during the course of the rearrangement. Rearrangement of one of these substrates gave-surprisingly-a single regioisomeric product. Selectivity in this case can be correlated with the relative stability of cationic intermediates, which lie on the pathway between spirocycle and final product. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Liberal Education For A Time Of Uncertainty: Reflections On Mark Van Doren's Liberal Education, Bill Koch Sep 2007

Liberal Education For A Time Of Uncertainty: Reflections On Mark Van Doren's Liberal Education, Bill Koch

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

For several months now I have been reading up on composition theory, and I’ve noticed that scholars like Anne Berthoff and Patricia Bizzell quote some of the seminal thinkers and philosophers of the early 20th century. These scholars (such as Cassirer, Richards, Whitehead) wrote their most influential texts during the 1930s, as if the awful gathering military storm had pressured these thinkers into formulating crystalline expressions of what the human mind must do to—as Richards puts it—“remedy our misunderstandings.”

Considering Men, The Evolving Discourse On Masculinities: Reflections On "Masculinities: Violences, Variations, And Visions", Robert Heasley

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

It has been twenty-five or so years since scholars first took up the mantle of critically examining masculinities in what are now considered classic works by Jack Sawyer, Joe Pleck and Harry Brod. These scholars made persuasive arguments for considering men in the equation of understanding gender. Drawing on a feminist analysis they called into question the perception that biology explains all and that the oppression of women was a de-facto result of how men and women are made, either by God or by nature. Today there is little support for the early essentialist arguments. Men, it turns out, do …

Hierarchical Aggregation And Intelligent Monitoring And Control In Fault-Tolerant Wireless Sensor Networks, Prasanna Sridhar Sep 2007

Hierarchical Aggregation And Intelligent Monitoring And Control In Fault-Tolerant Wireless Sensor Networks, Prasanna Sridhar

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The primary idea behind deploying sensor networks is to utilize the distributed sensing capability provided by tiny, low powered and low cost devices. Multiple sensing devices can be used cooperatively and collaboratively to capture events or monitor space more effectively than a single sensing device. The realm of applications envisioned for sensor networks is diverse including military, aerospace, industrial, commercial, environmental and health monitoring. Typical examples include: traffic monitoring of vehicles, crossborder infiltration-detection and assessment, military reconnaissance and surveillance, target tracking, habitat monitoring and structure monitoring, to name a few. Most of the applications envisioned with sensor networks demand highly …
