Selective Repression Of Retinoic Acid Target Genes By Rip140 During Induced Tumor Cell Differentiation Of Pluripotent Human Embryonal Carcinoma Cells, Kelly C. Heim, Kristina A. White, Dexin Deng, Craig R. Tomlinson, Jason Moore, Sarah Freemantle, Michael Spinella Sep 2007

Selective Repression Of Retinoic Acid Target Genes By Rip140 During Induced Tumor Cell Differentiation Of Pluripotent Human Embryonal Carcinoma Cells, Kelly C. Heim, Kristina A. White, Dexin Deng, Craig R. Tomlinson, Jason Moore, Sarah Freemantle, Michael Spinella

Dartmouth Scholarship

The use of retinoids as anti-cancer agents has been limited due to resistance and low efficacy. The dynamics of nuclear receptor coregulation are incompletely understood. Cell-and context-specific activities of nuclear receptors may be in part due to distinct coregulator complexes recruited to distinct subsets of target genes. RIP140 (also called NRIP1) is a ligand-dependent corepressor that is inducible with retinoic acid (RA). We had previously shown that RIP140 limits RA induced tumor cell differentiation of embryonal carcinoma; the pluriopotent stem cells of testicular germ cell tumors. This implies that RIP140 represses key genes required for RA-mediated tumor cell differentiation. Identification …

Livestock keeping is critical for many of the poor in the developing world, often contributing to multiple livelihood objectives and offering pathways out of poverty. Livestock keeping also affects an indispensable asset of the poor, their human capital, through its impact on their own nutrition and health. This paper outlines the linkages between livestock keeping and the physical well-being of the poor, and examines a number of commonly held beliefs that misrepresent livestock development issues related to these linkages. These beliefs limit the scope of intervention programs to promote livestock and limit their potential contribution to poverty reduction. Recognition of …

Development Of The Characteristics Of Science Questionnaire (Csq): Assessing Student Knowledge Of The Utah State Secondary Science Core Intended Learning Outcome 6 On The Nature Of Science, Bradford N. Talbert

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching students about the nature of science is an important and necessary part of secondary science curricula. The Utah State Office of Education has provided specific guidelines called intended learning outcomes (ILOs) to teachers in the state. The ILOs are based on the national standards presented in the Project 2061 publications of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1990 and 1993. The ILOs are not tied to any one scientific discipline such as biology or chemistry, but are intended as global statements describing what scientists do and how scientific knowledge is gained. ILO 6 prescribes that students …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of PCBs and PBBs on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha-(PPARalpha-) associated enzyme activities or protein levels. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered a single IP injection (150 mu mol/kg) of either 3,3',4,4'-tetrabromobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobiphenyl, 2',3,3',4,5-pentachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl, 2,2',3,3',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, or 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl in corn oil (10 ml/kg). One week later, the activities of catalase, peroxisomal fatty acyl-CoA oxidase, and peroxisomal beta-oxidation as well as cytochrome P450 4A (CYP4A) protein content were determined in subcellular liver fractions. None of the peroxisomal enzyme activities were significantly increased by any of the halogenated biphenyl congeners tested. Except for minor …

Analytical Formulas And Scaling Laws For Peak Interaction Forces In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Shuiqing Hu, Arvind Raman Sep 2007

Analytical Formulas And Scaling Laws For Peak Interaction Forces In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Shuiqing Hu, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

Determining the peak interaction force between an oscillating nanoscale tip and a sample surface has been a fundamental yet elusive goal in amplitude-modulated atomic force microscopy. Closed form analytical expressions are derived using nonlinear asymptotic theory for the peak attractive and repulsive forces that approximate with a high degree of accuracy the numerically simulated peak forces under ambient or vacuum conditions. Scaling laws involving van der Waals, chemical forces, nanoscale elasticity, and oscillator parameters are identified to demonstrate approximate similitude for the peak interaction forces under practical operating conditions.
