Electroactive Polymers (Eap): Simulation Studies Of The Actuation Mechanisms In A Cantilever Cellulose Electroactive Paper, Fatim A. Mbaye Oct 2007

Electroactive Polymers (Eap): Simulation Studies Of The Actuation Mechanisms In A Cantilever Cellulose Electroactive Paper, Fatim A. Mbaye

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Electroactive polymers (EAPs) exhibit large strain in response to an external electric field and have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years for sensor and actuator applications. Favorable properties include soft actuation, ease and simplicity in manufacturing, being light-weight, low power consumption, and the ability to withstand harsh environments. However, this is an emerging material, and several aspects, including the fundamental mechanisms for piezoelectric deflections, remain unclear. This project studies the internal electromechanical factors that contribute to the voltage induced deflections of electro-active paper (EAPap). Experimental measurements of bias dependent deflections and water absorption as a function of …

The Plasmodium Falciparum Chloroquine Resistance Transporter, Pfcrt, Mediates The Activity Of Chloroquine-Resistance Reversal Agents In The Malaria Parasite, Kristin Lane Oct 2007

The Plasmodium Falciparum Chloroquine Resistance Transporter, Pfcrt, Mediates The Activity Of Chloroquine-Resistance Reversal Agents In The Malaria Parasite, Kristin Lane

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Chloroquine (CQ) resistant Plasmodium falciparum is a serious problem affecting 3.2 billion people in over 100 countries today. Most endemic malarious countries are among the poorest in the world and lack the resources to replace the inexpensive and highly effective CQ. CQ resistance (CQR) reversal agents are a potentially inexpensive solution to restoring CQ efficacy. CQR reversal agents are drugs that have little to no antimalarial activity alone, but in combination with CQ, they increase dmg accumulation in the parasite and enhance the sensitivity to CQ in CQR parasites. PfCRT is a putative transporter located on the parasite digestive vacuole …

Limb Regeneration After Multiple Autotomy And Coxae Removal In The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus, Jennifer Ambler Oct 2007

Limb Regeneration After Multiple Autotomy And Coxae Removal In The Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus, Jennifer Ambler

OES Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated limb regeneration in the juvenile blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, specifically the role of the coxa and pedal nerve innervation of the regenerative limb bud over time. The coxa is a leg segment that has been defined as the source of positional, cellular, and neuronal information needed for limb regeneration in brachyuran crabs. This study indicates that removal of coxae under regenerative and non-regenerative conditions did not deter limb regeneration. The coxa is not the exclusive location of limb regenerative information since limbs re-grew with normal positional and functional arrangement in 86% of crabs showing regeneration at removal …

Digital Generation Pre-Service Teachers As Change Agents: A Paradox, Sharn Donnison Oct 2007

Digital Generation Pre-Service Teachers As Change Agents: A Paradox, Sharn Donnison

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper I examine the assumptions or ‘cultural models’ (Gee, 1992, p. 60) that 70 aspiring Digital Generation pre-service teachers in south-east Queensland have formed about themselves as future teachers. This paper is drawn from a larger study that focused on the cultural models and resulting discourses that these pre-service teachers expressed about the development of their future lives and careers. In this paper, I argue that these pre-service teachers possess conflicting cultural models about both themselves as teaching professionals and as social activists. While they profess to be educational and social change agents they also profess discourses of …

Turkish Pre-Service Teachers' Beliefs About The Importance Of Teaching Chemistry, Esen Uzuntiryaki, Yezdan Boz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this study was to describe Turkish pre-service chemistry teachers’ beliefs about the importance of teaching chemistry in high schools. For this purpose, 45 pre-service chemistry teachers were administered a questionnaire involving open-ended questions which asked what the importance of teaching chemistry is, and why we teach chemistry in high schools. Based on the written responses, 12 pre-service teachers were chosen to be interviewed to obtain more elaborated information about their beliefs. Data analysis revealed that most of the pre-service teachers expressed that chemistry should be taught in order to explain daily life events. However, a very small …

Harmonization Without Consensus: Critical Reflections On Drafting A Substantive Patent Law Treaty, Jerome H. Reichman, Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss Oct 2007

Harmonization Without Consensus: Critical Reflections On Drafting A Substantive Patent Law Treaty, Jerome H. Reichman, Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss

Duke Law Journal

In this Article, we contend that the World Intellectual Property Organization's proposed Substantive Patent Law Treaty (SPLT) is premature. Developing countries are struggling to adjust to the heightened standards of intellectual property protection required by the TRIPS Agreement of 1994. With TRIPS, at least, these countries obtained side payments (in the form of trade concessions) to offset the rising costs of knowledge products. A free-standing instrument, such as the SPLT, would shrink the remaining flexibilities in the TRIPS Agreement with no side payments and no concessions to the catch-up strategies of developing countries at different stages of technological advancement. Psodascript: Applying Advanced Language Constructs To Open-Source Phylogenetic Search, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Jonathan Krein, Quinn O. Snell, Adam R. Teichert Oct 2007

Psodascript: Applying Advanced Language Constructs To Open-Source Phylogenetic Search, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Jonathan Krein, Quinn O. Snell, Adam R. Teichert

Faculty Publications

Due to the immensity of phylogenetic tree space for large data sets, researches must rely on heuristic searches to infer reasonable phylogenies. By designing meta-searches which appropriately combine a variety of heuristics and parameter settings, researchers can significantly improve the performance of heuristic searches. Advanced language constructs in the open-source PSODA project—including variables, mathematical and logical expressions, conditional statements, and user-defined commands—give researchers a better framework for the exploration and exploitation of phylogenetic meta-search algorithms. PSODA’s approach to scripting meta-search algorithms is unique among open-source packages and addresses several limitations of other phylogenetic applications.

Vessels Of Reproduction: Forced Pregnancy And The Icc, Milan Markovic Oct 2007

Vessels Of Reproduction: Forced Pregnancy And The Icc, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

In an important victory for both women and the cause of human rights, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has criminalized forced pregnancy. The Court's Statute defines forced pregnancy as "the unlawful confinement of a woman forcibly made pregnant, with the intent of affecting the ethnic composition of any population or carrying out other violations of international law." Although the concept of a forced pregnancy crime is relatively new, "forced impregnation" has been used throughout history as a tool of assimilation or subjugation of the enemy, minority, or slave populations." There is some evidence that the ancient Athenians used it as …

T Cells Expressing Allograft Inflammatory Factor 1 Display Increased Chemotaxis And Induce A Profibrotic Phenotype In Normal Fibroblasts In Vitro, Francesco Del Galdo M.D., Ph.D., Sergio A. Jimenez M.D.

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Objective. Allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1) was first identified in rat cardiac allografts undergoing chronic rejection. The vasculopathy of chronic allograft rejection is strikingly similar to that seen in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). We previously demonstrated AIF-1 expression in inflammatory cells infiltrating skin and lungs from SSc patients, but its role in SSc pathogenesis is unknown. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of AIF-1 on T cell migration and production of cytokines capable of modulating normal dermal fibroblast functions.

Methods. Stably transfected Jurkat T cells expressing 2 AIF-1 splicing variants were prepared, and their migration toward …

Using Parsimony To Guide Maximum Likelihood Searches, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Timothy O'Connor, Quinn O. Snell, Kenneth Sundberg

Faculty Publications

The performance of maximum likelihood searches can be boosted by using the most parsimonious tree as a starting point for the search. The time spent in performing the parsimony search to find this starting tree is insignificant compared to the time spent in the maximum likelihood search, leading to an overall gain in search time. These parsimony boosted maximum likelihood searches lead to topologies with scores statisitically similar to the unboosted searches, but in less time.

Children's Behavioral Health Services In Baltimore: Walking The Continuum, Jennifer Ryan Sep 2007

Children's Behavioral Health Services In Baltimore: Walking The Continuum, Jennifer Ryan

National Health Policy Forum

This site visit explored the range of behavioral health services available for children in the city of Baltimore and in the state more broadly. Like many states, the policy community in Maryland has been working hard to meet the challenges of providing an effective continuum of care in the context of complex financing incentives and an overburdened educational and public health care system. Several promising practices have emerged, including the Wraparound practice model that offers individualized, comprehensive services and natural supports to achieve a positive set of outcomes for the child and family. The wraparound model incorporates both traditional services …

HIV-1 subtype C is the most common HIV-1 group M subtype in Africa and many parts of Asia. However, to date HIV-1 vaccine candidate immunogens have not induced potent and broadly neutralizing antibodies against subtype C primary isolates. We have used a centralized gene strategy to address HIV-1 diversity, and generated a group M consensus envelope gene with shortened consensus variable loops (CON-S) for comparative studies with wildtype (WT) Env immunogens. Our results indicate that the consensus HIV-1 group M CON-S Env elicited cross-subtype neutralizing antibodies of similar or greater breadth and titer than the WT Envs tested, indicating the …

Analysis Of A Class Of Distributed Randomized Algorithms On Randomly Changing Network Graphs, Jen-Yeu Chen, Jianghai Hu Sep 2007

Analysis Of A Class Of Distributed Randomized Algorithms On Randomly Changing Network Graphs, Jen-Yeu Chen, Jianghai Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Dynamical connection graph changes are inherent in networks such as peer-to-peer networks, wireless ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks. Considering the influence of the frequent graph changes is thus essential for precisely assessing the performance of applications and algorithms on such networks. With two-fold states, stochastic hybrid systems (SHSs) can effectively model the dynamics of the execution of algorithms on a network with random and frequent graph changes. In this report, using SHSs, we analyze the performance of an epidemic-like algorithm, DRG (Distributed Random Grouping), for average aggregate computation on a wireless sensor network with dynamical graph changes. The …
