Population Biology And Monitoring Of The Cuban Hutia At Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Gary W. Witmer, Martin Lowney
Population Biology And Monitoring Of The Cuban Hutia At Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Gary W. Witmer, Martin Lowney
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The Cuban hutia (Capromys pilorides) is the largest native mammal occurring in Cuba. Endemic to the West Indies, most species of hutia are rare or extinct because of over-harvesting, exotic species introductions, and habitat modifications by humans. An exception is Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the Cuban hutia is very common and is responsible for a variety of damage and conflicts, including damage to landscaping, gnawing through cables, damage to vehicles, the accumulation of large amounts of feces in residential areas, and damage to native vegetation, with little subsequent regeneration of many plant species. Current management focuses on population …

Agent-centered models usually consider only individual-level variables in calculations of economic costs and benefits. There has been little consideration of social or cultural history on shaping payoffs in ways that impact decisions. To examine the role of local expectations on economic behavior, we explore whether village affiliation accounts for the variation in dictator game offers among the Tsimane of the Bolivian Amazon independently of other factors that could confound such an effect. Our analysis shows that significant differences in altruistic giving exist among villages, village patterns are recognized by residents, and offers likely reflect variation in social expectations rather than …

Schistosoma – Associated Bladder Cancer: Is There A Change In The Trend Of Cell Type?, Hassan Abol-Enein Hassan
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To compare the contribution of squamous cell and transitional cell types to the schistosoma – related and schistosoma – unrelated bladder cancer among Egyptian patients and to evaluate any significant association of carcinoma in situ (CIS) and stage T1 – TCC in schistosomiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study in which the histopathologic records of 196 patients who underwent radical or salvage cystectomy for bladder cancer from August 1994 to December 2000 in Urology and Nephrology Center/ Mansoura University – Egypt, had been carried out. RESULTS: The age range of patients was (29 – 75) with a mean …

The Efficacy Of Dextran 70 On Reticuloendothelial System In Systemically Infected Mice With Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Jamela Gh. Auda
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The reticuloendothelial system (RES) play an important role in immunity against bacterial infection and Klebsiella pneumoniae one of the most common causes of hospital-acquired infections. Dextran70 (D70), a polysaccharide, may alter functions of this system through changing many biological activities in the tissues. OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on the prophylactic effects of D70 on RES in systemically challenged mice with K. pneumoniae which has been isolated from urine sample of patient with urinary tract infection. METHODS: Four groups of adult white mice were intravenously injected with K.pneumoniae. Three groups of them was preinjected intraperitonealy for three successive days …
Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee
Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee
Faculty and Staff Publications
Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. The lectures are not tailored by discipline and students might receive the same lecture several times while completing their lower-division coursework. SJSU wants to replace this format …

Phylogeny And Trichome Evolution In The Plant Family Brassicaceae, Mark Alan Beilstein
Phylogeny And Trichome Evolution In The Plant Family Brassicaceae, Mark Alan Beilstein
Dissertations
The plant family Brassicaceae is economically important and contains the model genetic system Arabidopsis thaliana. Previous phylogenetic studies indicated that the historic classification system of the family was highly artificial, with several tribes likely to be para- or polyphyletic. However, these studies sampled fewer than 30 of the 338 genera of the family. We expanded the sampling of genera by four-fold and inferred phylogeny from both the chloroplast gene ndhF and the nuclear gene phytochrome A (PHYA) to determine which of the previously delimited 19 tribes of the family were monophyletic. Results from both ndhF and PHYA …

Earlier work showed that Amazonian biomass burning produces both lofted and initially unlofted emissions in large amounts. A mobile, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) measured the unlofted emissions of 17 trace gases from residual smoldering combustion (RSC) of logs as part of the Tropical Forest and Fire Emissions Experiment (TROFFEE) during the 2004 Amazonian dry season. The RSC emissions were highly variable and the few earlier RSC measurements lay near the high end of combustion efficiency observed in this study. Fuel consumption by RSC was ∼5% of total for a planned deforestation fire. Much regional RSC probably occurs in the …

Source Tracking Of Microbial Intrusion In Water Systems Using Artificial Neural Networks, Minyoung Kim, Christopher Y. Choi, Charles P. Gerba
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A ‘‘what-if’’ scenario where biological agents are accidentally or deliberately introduced into a water system was generated, and artificial neural network (ANN) models were applied to identify the pathogenic release location to isolate the contaminated area and minimize its hazards. The spatiotemporal distribution of Escherichia coli 15597 along the water system was employed to locate pollutants by inversely interpreting transport patterns of E. coli using ANNs. Results showed that dispersion patterns of E. coli were positively correlated to pH, turbidity, and conductivity (R2 = 0.90–0.96), and the ANN models successfully identified the source location of E. coli introduced into …
