Cisplatin Analogues Containing 4,4'-Bis[Alkyl]-2,2'-Bipyridine Derivatives, Zeynep Gizem Kabuloglu Karayusuf

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cisplatin is used clinically to treat various types of cancer. While effective in treating a variety of cancers it exhibits a wide range of side effects. Synthesis of novel cisplatin analogs, which exhibit increased cytotoxicity at lower doses, may alleviate some of the side effects; These analogs utilize 4,4'-bis(alkyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, a diimine, in place of the ammonia ligands present in cisplatin and the addition of substituents to the 4,4'-position as well as coordination to PtCl2 to yield a series of (4,4'-bis[alkyl]-2,2'-bipyridine) PtCl2 compounds. Modifications at the 4,4'-position occur by generating a benzylic dianion by way of lithium diisopropyl amide (LDA) and …

Seed fates were investigated for Arctomecon californica a Critically Endangered plant in the State of Nevada. This species is a short-lived rare perennial plant endemic to the Mojave Desert. Conservation plans for the species would benefit by understanding the fate of A. californica seeds from seed production, dispersal, and granivory to incorporation within the seed bank. Each year, 18% of the capsules suffered predispersal loss. The average number of seeds per capsule ranged from 87 to 99 seeds. Seed viability ranged from 87.5% to 100% per plant. Seed production was highly dependent on the number of mature capsules per plant …

Determination Of Transformation Function For Predictor Variables In Multiple Linear Regression, Vimatha Ravi Jan 2007

Determination Of Transformation Function For Predictor Variables In Multiple Linear Regression, Vimatha Ravi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In multiple linear regression involving several predictor variables, finding a suitable non-linear transformation of the predictors might be helpful to present the model in a simple functional form which is linear in the transformed variables. In this thesis, a computer code in C++ is developed to automate the process of finding a suitable transformation for the predictors. This is done by finding the transformation that yields the maximum correlation between the response and the transformed predictor. Several simulated examples are included to illustrate the method. A prime concern in calculating the correlation between two data sets is statistical accuracy. Correlation …

Atmospheric Dispersion Model Validation For Low Wind Speed Conditions, Patrick Shawn Sawyer Jan 2007

Atmospheric Dispersion Model Validation For Low Wind Speed Conditions, Patrick Shawn Sawyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric plume dispersion models are used for a variety of purposes including emergency planning and response to hazardous material releases, determining force protection actions in the event of a WMD attack and for locating sources of pollution. This paper provides a review of previous studies that examine the accuracy of atmospheric plume dispersion models for chemical releases. It considers the principles used to derive air dispersion plume models and looks at three specific models currently in use; ALOHA, EPIcode and SCIPUFF. Results from this study indicate over-prediction bias by the EPIcode and SCIPUFF models and under-prediction bias by the ALOHA …

Estimating The Effects Of Casino Marketing Activities On Slot Business Volume: A Model For Leisure Services Businesses, Lisa Birtciel Young

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study researched the effect of marketing promotions on gaming volume (i.e., coin-in). Specifically, this study attempted (1) to gain an understanding of the relationship between specific marketing promotions (slot tournaments, special events, product prize drawings, and no marketing promotions) and gaming volume; and (2) to estimate the magnitude of incremental revenue for each type of promotion. A conceptual model was proposed to examine the effect of the different types of marketing promotions on gaming volume, including two other variables (holidays and day-of-the-week) previously found to influence gaming volume; Secondary data were collected from a Las Vegas Strip property for …

Evaluating The Benefits Of A Systems Approach To Particulate Matter Air Pollution Management, Stephanie Janene Fincher Jan 2007

Evaluating The Benefits Of A Systems Approach To Particulate Matter Air Pollution Management, Stephanie Janene Fincher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Although air quality has improved in the United States over the past thirty years, some air quality management areas continue to have serious problems with air pollutants such as particulate matter (NRC 2004). I hypothesize that using a systems approach would have benefits for PM10 management, including improved results and understanding, as well as identification of ineffective policies. A system dynamics model was developed for PM10 in the Las Vegas Valley. Policy analysis revealed real-world behavior, important dynamics of the system, and potentially harmful policies. Results support the importance of a systems and long-term perspective, and show that PM10 pollution …

Development And Validation Of The Facial Affect Learning And Memory Test (Falmt) And Facial Identification Of Affect Task (Fiat), Christina Marie Armstrong Jan 2007

Development And Validation Of The Facial Affect Learning And Memory Test (Falmt) And Facial Identification Of Affect Task (Fiat), Christina Marie Armstrong

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The neurocognitive assessment of visuospatial memory has begun to receive attention and has been recognized as being important in the understanding of overall memory processing. Additionally, there has been an increased emphasis on emotion processing, particularly affect discrimination and attention bias. However, little information is currently available on learning and memory for emotional information. Because emotion is expressed to a large extent through nonverbal means, a nonverbal test of emotion learning would be valuable, although no such test currently exists. The aim of the current study was to establish normative performance characteristics, convergent and divergent validity for two newly developed …

Boric Acid Inhibits Cell Growth And Induces Apoptosis In Breast Cancer Cells, Anuoluwapo Funmilola Elegbede Jan 2007

Boric Acid Inhibits Cell Growth And Induces Apoptosis In Breast Cancer Cells, Anuoluwapo Funmilola Elegbede

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Boric acid (BA), an essential plant micronutrient, has recently been discovered as a chemo-preventive agent in prostate cancer; however, its mechanism of action remains unknown. Our interest is to determine if BA has a preventative role in breast cancer and elucidate its possible mechanism. Integrins are transmembrane proteins responsible for cell growth, survival and adhesion. We hypothesize that BA interacts with integrins to mediate its response. To test this hypothesis we used BA and phenylboronic acid (PBA), a bulkier analog of BA, on breast ductal carcinoma, ZR-75-1, and breast andenocarcinoma, MCF-7; BA and PBA treatments were tested through proliferation, cytotoxicity …

The Effect Of Temperature On Development And Behavior Of Relict Leopard Frog Tadpoles (Rana Onca), Jeffrey Abraham Goldstein Jan 2007

The Effect Of Temperature On Development And Behavior Of Relict Leopard Frog Tadpoles (Rana Onca), Jeffrey Abraham Goldstein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Relict Leopard frogs (Rana onca) are found in thermal springs with water temperatures in excess of 30°C at the source but it's unknown whether tadpoles require reintroduction sites with specific thermal conditions for development. Tadpole survivorship at 20, 25 and 30°C was 84, 93.8, and 66%, respectively, while none survived at 35°C. Time to metamorphosis was significantly shorter for 25°C acclimation group (62+/-8 days) followed by the 30° (106+/-51 days) and 20°C (260+/-47 days) acclimation groups. Development was arrested in the 15°C acclimated group and survivorship declined to 63.8% after 191 days. However, 80% of the surviving larvae completed metamorphosis …

Nonlinear Suboptimal And Adaptive Pectoral Fin Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mugdha S Naik Jan 2007

Nonlinear Suboptimal And Adaptive Pectoral Fin Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mugdha S Naik

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are used for numerous applications in the deep sea, such as hydrographic survey, sea bed mining and oceanographic mapping, etc. Presently, significant amount of effort, is being made in developing biorobotic AUVs (BAUVs) with biologically inspired control surfaces. However, the dynamics of AUVs and BAUVs are highly nonlinear and the hydrodynamic coefficients are not precisely known. As such the development of nonlinear and adaptive control systems is of considerable importance; We consider the suboptimal dive plane control of AUVs using the state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique. This method provides effective means of designing nonlinear control systems …

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Synergistic Interleukin-6 Release But Not Transcriptional Activation In Astrocytoma Cells, Joseph D. Roach Jan 2007

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Synergistic Interleukin-6 Release But Not Transcriptional Activation In Astrocytoma Cells, Joseph D. Roach

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A decline in the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may enhance cytokine release in Alzheimer's disease (AD) resulting in neuroinflammation. We investigated the GABA-mediated suppression of the synergistic release of interleukin-6 (IL-6) due to interleukin 1-beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) synergy. Our results indicate that p38 and nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB are essential for the synergistic release of IL-6 by IL-1beta and TNFalpha. Both IL-1beta and TNF-alpha stimulate p38 phosphorylation and each are able to enhance the degradation of the NF-kappaB inhibitor, IkappaB-alpha, with no change in IkappaB-beta. Interestingly, co-treatments IL-1beta and TNF-alpha induce a greater increase in …

Detecting Microcalcification Clusters In Digital Mammograms: Study For Inclusion Into Computer Aided Diagnostic Prompting System, Gopalkrishna Veni

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Among signs of breast cancer encountered in digital mammograms radiologists point to microcalcification clusters (MCCs). Their detection is a challenging problem from both medical and image processing point of views. This work presents two concurrent methods for MCC detection, and studies their possible inclusion to a computer aided diagnostic prompting system. One considers Wavelet Domain Hidden Markov Tree (WHMT) for modeling microcalcification edges. The model is used for differentiation between MC and non-MC edges based on the weighted maximum likelihood (WML) values. The classification of objects is carried out using spatial filters. The second method employs SUSAN edge detector in …

Cytotoxicity Of Novel Cisplatin Analogs In Lung, Prostate And Breast Cancer Cells, Van Vo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The antitumor agent that is most prescribed for the treatment of cancer is cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin), but its application is limited due to toxic side effects; especially nephrotoxicity. Due to these limitations, numerous analogs have been developed. The cytotoxicity of five novel cisplatin analogs, dichloro(4,4'-diethyl-2,2'-bipyridine)platinum, dichloro(4,4'-dipropyl-2,2'-bipyridine)platinum, dichloro(4,4'-di-t-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine)platinum, dichloro(4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine)platinum and dichloro[4,4'-bis(3-methoxypropyl)-2,2'-bipyridine]platinum, in lung (A549), prostate (DU-145) and five breast (MCF-7, MDA-MB-435, MDA-MB-231, DC4 and DB46) cancer cell lines were investigated. Clonogenic survivals demonstrated that these novel analogs were 47 to 242 times more lethal than cisplatin and killed cells predominately by apoptosis. The analogs did not typically cause a block in …

Self-* Distributed Query Region Covering In Sensor Networks, Ai Yamazaki Jan 2007

Self-* Distributed Query Region Covering In Sensor Networks, Ai Yamazaki

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Wireless distributed sensor networks are used to monitor a multitude of environments for both civil and military applications. Sensors may be deployed to unreachable or inhospitable areas. Thus, they cannot be replaced easily. However, due to various factors, sensors' internal memory, or the sensors themselves, can become corrupted. Hence, there is a need for more robust sensor networks. Sensors are most commonly densely deployed, but keeping all sensors continually active is not energy efficient. Our aim is to select the minimum number of sensors which can entirely cover a particular monitored area, while remaining strongly connected. This concept is called …

On The Use Of Lognormal Distribution For Environmental Data Analysis, Devarshi Pant Jan 2007

On The Use Of Lognormal Distribution For Environmental Data Analysis, Devarshi Pant

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Contaminant concentration data from Superfund sites is quite often positively skewed, and the log-normal theory based statistical procedures are typically used for such data. Recent work in the environmental statistics literature, however, has shown that the use of log-normal theory based formulas, such as the H-statistic confidence interval, is problematic. The performance of the H -- UCL in the presence of non -- detects in the sample is investigated via simulated examples. When comparing mean contaminant concentration at a site with that of the background, the 2-sample t-test on log-transformed data is commonly used. A part of this thesis deals …

An Evaluation Of X-Ray Fluorescence Lead Detection Methods For Candy Wrappers, Louis J Abacherli Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of X-Ray Fluorescence Lead Detection Methods For Candy Wrappers, Louis J Abacherli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, it is expensive and time consuming for public health entities to test candy (and other consumer products) that has entered the consumer market in the United States. The XRF, on the other hand, provides a quick, economical, and easy method to test lead levels. It has been demonstrated in a variety of studies that x-ray fluorescence (XRF) can be used for testing lead levels in paint, soil, and testing in-vivo for bone. What has not been studied is the XRF's ability to test for lead in certain consumer items such as candy. This research was designed to identify XRF …

Effective Or Elective: A Character Analysis Of Nip/Tuck, Sabrina Monet Alipate Jan 2007

Effective Or Elective: A Character Analysis Of Nip/Tuck, Sabrina Monet Alipate

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Why are the lives of plastic surgeons so interesting to watch? What is it about this show that draws viewers? Using the typology of character signs by Butler (2002) and the moral standpoints outlined by Krijnen and Meijer (2005) I argue that it is the character development and moral struggles of each character that draw viewers to this show every week. The Miami-based plastic surgeons believe cutting people into someone "beautiful" equates to happiness. It is the search for perfection and beauty and the belief that it will bring happiness that makes the show popular. This paper examines the characters …

Acculturation Effects On Culture And Conflict Style, Mae-Li Amick Allison Jan 2007

Acculturation Effects On Culture And Conflict Style, Mae-Li Amick Allison

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In light of globalization, it is ever more valuable to understand how culture influences the way people manage conflict. Opportunities for individuals from varied cultural backgrounds to interact, and therefore conflict, are inherently greater because the technologies, economies, and livelihoods of people of many countries are increasingly interdependent. The purpose of this study was to examine factors influencing people's individualistic-collectivistic culture tendencies and conflict styles, and investigate acculturation as a moderating factor between individualism-collectivism and conflict style among foreign nationals living within the United States. In addition to acculturation, variables that could affect acculturation were also measured, including media use, …

The Effect Of Erosion Control Structures On The Distribution Of Selected Nutrients And Metals In The Sediments Of The Las Vegas Wash, Tracy Marie Boettcher Jan 2007

The Effect Of Erosion Control Structures On The Distribution Of Selected Nutrients And Metals In The Sediments Of The Las Vegas Wash, Tracy Marie Boettcher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Las Vegas Wash (Wash) channels the Las Vegas Valley's (Valley) treated wastewater, shallow groundwater, urban runoff, and stormwater runoff before terminating in Lake Mead at Las Vegas Bay. The population increase in the Valley has caused a dramatic increase in the flow of the Wash due to urbanization and increased wastewater effluent. Erosion control structures have been constructed to reduce erosion. These structures affect the flow of sediment through the Wash and might affect the distribution of potential contaminants in a way that can negatively impact plant and animal life; The chemical constituents examined in this study are arsenic, …

Changes In Soil Physical And Hydrological Properties Due To Bromus Tectorum (Cheatgrass) Invasion, Joshua J Boxell Jan 2007

Changes In Soil Physical And Hydrological Properties Due To Bromus Tectorum (Cheatgrass) Invasion, Joshua J Boxell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Introduction of Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) into western rangelands has had a profound effect on the diversity and health of native ecosystems. Introduced in the late 19th century, B. tectorum has rapidly out-competed native species and colonized large areas of the Great Basin region (Mack, 1981). The objective of this research is to assess changes in soil physical and hydrologic properties on former A. tridentata sites now invaded by B. tectorum and to quantify the scope of the alterations through time. Study site selection was based upon a range of A. tridentata stand replacing fire histories spanning approximately 20 years and …

Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of *Evolution, The Nature Of Science, And Situations Of Chance, Louis Scott Nadelson Jan 2007

Preservice Teachers' Understanding Of *Evolution, The Nature Of Science, And Situations Of Chance, Louis Scott Nadelson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The learning and teaching of biological evolution, the nature of science and situations of chance is conceptually challenging. Attempts to increase understanding in these domains has resulted in limited occurrences of success, and the identification of many related misconceptions. The alternative conceptions have been detected in teachers as well as students, which reflects the complexity of learning the content. Teachers' understanding of these concepts is critical to assuring they do not perpetuate misconceptions by teaching them to their students. The consistent detection of misconceptions in teachers suggests that new approaches to increasing understanding of these concepts need to be explored. …

Violating The Feminine Land, Body, And Spirit In Western American Literature, Gregory Alan Wright Jan 2007

Violating The Feminine Land, Body, And Spirit In Western American Literature, Gregory Alan Wright

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The literature of the American West, much like the history of this region, is replete with images and stories of violence. Although pop culture (i.e. popular Westerns, film, television, etc.) has inculcated the idea that the West is synonymous with violence, the origins of this supposition begins with the arrival of Europeans to the New World, which, at the point of discovery, signified the West. European conquerors and colonists brought with them, along with their hopes and dreams for a fresh start on the new continent, the Judeo-Christian cultural values and traditions of the old continent. This ideological position condoned …

Examining Women Faculty Experiences Using The Model Of Human Occupation Perspective: A Qualitative Approach In One Community College, Christine R Privott Jan 2007

Examining Women Faculty Experiences Using The Model Of Human Occupation Perspective: A Qualitative Approach In One Community College, Christine R Privott

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Occupations for women in the academy have been changing over the last century. Contemporary studies that have looked at women faculty work have been mixed in their findings about the relationship between gender and job satisfaction. Few studies have focused on two-year-college models of women's experiences as faculty; Set in the context of occupational science theories, this qualitative study explored the daily work of women faculty in one community college. The concept of faculty work was viewed through Kielhofner's Model of Human Occupation, which suggests that occupations are made up of three subsystems of human action or doing: volition, habituation, …

Human And Pet Interaction: Companion Animals And The Formation Of Identity, Lisa Louise Sarmicanic Jan 2007

Human And Pet Interaction: Companion Animals And The Formation Of Identity, Lisa Louise Sarmicanic

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Keeping companion animals is commonplace. Each year Americans spend over 34.3 billion dollars on pet food, pet toys, and veterinary care, and within households, the person with primary responsibility for the care of a pet is usually female (American Pet Product Manufacturers Association 24(34). Although literature on the human/animal bond is becoming more extensive, relatively little has been written about the dynamics of the daily social interaction between humans---specifically women---and pets. In response to this lack of literature, this study asks: What is the nature of the social interplay between women and their companion animals? And how do women integrate …

Reconstruction Of Hydrologic And Climatic Variability In The Colorado River Basin, Janak Timilsena Jan 2007

Reconstruction Of Hydrologic And Climatic Variability In The Colorado River Basin, Janak Timilsena

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the reconstruction of hydrologic and climate variability in the Colorado River Basin for the past 500 years. Unimpaired streamflow stations and regional April 1 snow water equivalent of the basin were reconstructed using tree-ring chronologies as predictors in Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR). Regional April 1 snow water equivalent time series was developed with principal component analysis and cluster analysis on snow course stations in the basin. For the reconstruction of unimpaired streamflow and regional April 1 snow water equivalent, all available standard tree-ring chronologies inside the Colorado River Basin were screened based on the correlation criterion …
