Xenobiotic Transporters In Lactating Mammary Epithelial Cells: Predictions For Drug Accumulation In Breast Milk, Philip Earle Empey

Recent literature has established that breast cancer resistance protein (ABCG2) is upregulated during lactation and is responsible for the greater than predicted accumulation of many drugs in breast milk. The objectives of this project were (1) to investigate the role of this transporter in the reported apically-directed nitrofurantoin flux in the CIT3 cell culture model of lactation, (2) to develop a mathematical model for drug transfer into breast milk to relate initial flux rates, steady-state concentrations, efflux ratios, and in vivo milk to serum ratios (M/S) and (3) to identify xenobiotic transporters that are highly expressed, and therefore potentially important …

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the use of a graphic organizer notebook in a French II classroom of a suburban high school in Oklahoma City. Students from 2 different classes were given either a partially completed or an empty graphic organizer notebook to help them review important concepts learned in French I. Students' learning was evaluated through the administration of a test before and after review. As expected, student test scores after review improved greatly compared to their pre-test scores. Although the type of notebook used did not significantly impact test scores , qualitative data showed that all students …

This study examined four different scientific literacy strategies and their effectiveness in increasing scientific literacy. These four different strategies include The Learning Cycle Approach, The Venn diagram strategy, the Definition Map, and Science in the News Framework. This study took place with two different eighth grade science classes in the two units of properties of matter and periodic table. The students completed different laboratory activities and ticket out the doors that were assessed to measure the effectiveness of increasing the scientific literacy. Because of the increase in the numbers of adolescents presenting in residential care, the challenge and difficulty posed to therapists in treating this age-group, and the prevalence of chronic stress and complex trauma symptoms found in this population, the research conducted was a clinical case study investigating the transportability and effectiveness of using Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), a manualized treatment format, with adolescent clients in a residential treatment setting. Starting in 2004, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Rowan University introduced a new tool into its program: Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). The tool is used at different aspects ofeducation. As a coursework project, graduating ME seniors researched, designed, built, competed and reported with underwater ROVs to assess their design skills before heading out to start their careers. It tests a wide range of engineering background in one single project and gauges the soft skills such as teamwork, self-learning, communication and evaluation. This volume contains four sections, the first of which examines some of the special moral concerns that arise from assigning distinct activities and responsibilities to women and men respectively. It is difficult to argue against the view that women and not men are the birth-givers. But it is also true that death rates tied to pregnancy and birth-giving are unacceptably high in developing countries. Are women better off giving birth in hospitals with attending physicians (often male) or in homes with attending midwives (usually female)? Which approach should be "exported" to the developing world?

Problem and purpose. There are few standardized tools for diagnosing ADHD in adults. The purpose of this study was to compare a standardized rating scale (CAARS) used by different observers, with a comprehensive diagnostic interview (CAADID) with respect to their ability to diagnose subtypes of ADHD.

Method. Subjects for this study came from baseline data of 98 patients (18 to 60 years ofage) participating in a drug trial for adult ADHD. The CAADID interview results in a yes-no decision as to whether the patient meets DSM-IV criteria for the subtypes ADHD. A t -test was used to compare the CAADID-diagnosed …

The reduction of membrane productivity (i.e. membrane fouling) during operation occurs in virtually all membrane applications. Membrane fouling originates from the method by which membranes operate: contaminants are rejected by the membrane and retained on the feed side of the membrane while treated water passes through the membrane. The accumulation of these contaminants on the feed side of the membrane results in increased operating pressures, increased backwashing frequencies, increased chemical cleaning frequencies, and increased membrane replacement frequencies. Self-assembled lipid tubules are particularly attractive for inorganic synthesis and drug delivery because they have hollow cylindrical shapes and relatively rigid mechanical properties. In this thesis work, we have synthesized lipid tubules of 1,2-bis(tricosa-10,12-dinoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) by self-assembly and polymerization in solutions. We demonstrate for the first time that both uniform and modulated molecular tilt orderings exist in the tubule walls, which have been predicted by current theories, and therefore provide valuable supporting evidences for self-assembly mechanisms of chiral molecules. The objective of the study was to compare the trihalomethanes (THMs) produced from ferrate with hypochlorite and to determine how different the THM production would be for a given degree of disinfection (3 log reduction in Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC)). Different water samples were collected from Lake Claire, Atlantic Ocean, and secondary effluent from an advanced wastewater treatment plant. THM formation was determined using a standard assay over 7 days at room temperature. Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder of size 10-20 nm was synthesized applying microwave radiation using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous as the starting materials. Microwave power of 600 W and Ca/P ratio of 1.66 in the starting chemicals served as the major factors in the synthesis of nanocrystalline HAp powder. Phase composition and evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Morphology, agglomeration and particle-size of the synthesized powder were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques. Orthophosphates and polyphosphates are rarely present at significant levels in raw water source but are purposefully added to the water in various forms to inhibit corrosion, iron oxidation (red water), or calcium carbonate precipitation (scale formation). Orthophosphates serve as building blocks for polyphosphates, which includes structures in linear chain, branched chains (metaphosphate) and "glassy" polyphosphate polymers. The advantage of polyphosphates over ortho phosphates lies in the fact that they slowly revert to orthophosphates and thus provide corrosion inhibition action over longer period of time in distribution systems. This study represents an analysis of comprehensive temperature and moisture content data collected from the anaerobic portion of a bioreactor landfill at the New River Regional Landfill, Florida, USA. The main focus of the study was the analysis of effects of the liquid injection on the temperature inside the landfill. When the leachate or groundwater at lower temperature than the landfilled waste is injected into the landfill, it has an initial cooling effect on the waste until the biological activity, enhanced by the additional moisture, releases heat. Iron release adverse affects aesthetic water quality and the release of copper and lead is regulated by the Lead and Copper rule (LCR) and can adversely affect consumer health. The note examines how the rise of the internet and legal developments, particularly the Supreme Court's decision in Quality King Distributors v. Lanza, have disrupted traditional price discrimination practices in the textbook industry. Historically, publishers engaged in third-degree price discrimination, charging higher prices in the U.S. market due to geographic isolation and limited arbitrage opportunities. However, the internet has facilitated reimportation and arbitrage, undermining this practice. The first sale doctrine under 17 U.S.C. § 109(a) further complicates efforts to prevent resale of cheaper, internationally purchased textbooks in the U.S. market. A recent article by Richard Brooks and Warren Schwartz contends that the goal of preliminary injunctions should be to promote efficient conduct during a lawsuit. It would do this by granting injunctions to all plaintiffs who post a bond covering the defendant's damages provided that the plaintiff has some claim on the merits. This reply defends the more traditional approach theorized in a past article by this author and in an opinion of Judge Richard Posner.
