Race-Ing Patents/Patenting Race: An Emerging Political Geography Of Intellectual Property In Biotechnology, Jonathan Kahn

This article applies insights from critical race theory to examine an emerging phenomenon in biotechnology research and product development. The strategic use of race as a genetic category to obtain patent protection and drug approval. A dramatic rise in the use of race in biotechnology patents indicates that researchers and affiliated commercial enterprises are coming to see social categories of race as presenting opportunities for gaining, extending, or protecting monopoly market protection for an array of biotechnological products and services. OBJECTIVE: To determine the protective effects of vitamin E against the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species during toluene induced brain injury in rats using histopathological, biochemical, and behavioral parameters. METHODS: Twenty-eight Wistar albino male rats were studied at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Laboratories and Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Metabolism Laboratory in 2006. The rats were divided into 4 groups as follows: control group, toluene only treated group, both toluene and vitamin E treated group, and vitamin E only treated group. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the most prevalent risk factor for stroke. METHODS: We performed a descriptive and analytical prospective study on patients with stroke admitted to the neurology wards of Imam Hospital, Tabriz, Iran during 2004 and 2005. The study comprised 100 ischemic stroke (IS) patients consisting of 46 men and 54 women with a mean age of 67 +/- 15, and 100 age and gender matched apparently healthy subjects. Plasma levels of C-Reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, platelet counts, lipoprotein (a) (LP (a)), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG) were measured in both …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of Centella asiatica (CeA) fresh leaf extract treatment on the behavior, especially learning and memory, of adult rats. METHODS: Adult rats (2.5 months old) were fed with 2, 4, and 6 ml/kg body of fresh leaf extract of CeA for 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Meningeal carcinomatosis is an uncommon metastatic complication of systemic solid tumors. The diagnosis is based on the presence of malignant cells in the cerebrospinal fluid. The sensibility of cerebrospinal fluid testing in detecting the neoplastic cells improves when repeating lumbar punctures. Magnetic resonance imaging could help in establishing the diagnosis. The prognosis of carcinomatous meningitis is poor, especially when the primitive neoplasm is initially unknown. We report the case of a patient presenting with sudden bilateral visual decrease, headaches, and vomiting. Signs of meningeal irritation were found. METHODS: A case controlled study carried out among 130 male patients with PTSD, and 130 matched individuals from the normal population. "This dissertation presents a simple method for the photolithographic patterning of silica hydrogel monoliths and planar substrates with quantum dots and inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles. We developed a method for surface patterning and bulk (3D) patterning of silica hydrogel monoliths and surface patterning of planar substrates with CdS, CdSe, PbS and PbSe quantum dots using infrared light, ultraviolet light, X-rays, and multi-photon ionization radiation. Precursor combinations were prepared which can readily dissociate with IR, UV, X-rays, and multi-photon ionization radiation. Different capping agents were used for improving quantum dot size distribution. The luminescence quantum yield of the composites can be increased …

Rural Teacher Satisfaction: An Analysis Of Beliefsand Attitudes Of Rural Teachers' Job Satisfaction, John Huysman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to understand the beliefs and attitudes of teachers that affect their perceptions of job satisfaction in one small rural Florida school district. Data collected included a self-administered survey of Likert-type items measuring 20 factors for job satisfaction (96% response rate), individual semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Analysis of the data confirmed prior research suggesting that multiple factors influence job satisfaction. Intrinsic satisfaction factors were the best predictors of overall job satisfaction: security, activity, social service, variety, and ability utilization. Extrinsic factors were most likely to predict overall dissatisfaction: recognition, company policies, opportunities for advancement, …

The pharmaceutical industry has been receiving greater scrutiny lately due in large part to the many public and private legal enforcement actions taken against pharmaceutical manufacturers. These enforcement actions, along with legal developments such as the OIG Compliance Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act’s statutory guidelines for public corporations, the HIPAA privacy regulations, and the Medicare Modernization Act, have the potential to encourage the pharmaceutical industry to self-regulate beyond the bounds currently required by the law.
