Due to damaged vertebrae nerves, serious disease and aging, patients who have to lie down for long period of time need to exercise to maintain up-right standing position and recover their muscle power of paralytic leg. This study describes the development of an intelligent tilt table which can provide a patient with visual feedback of exercise to increase the effect of rehabilitation. This could be possible by measuring and displaying the knee bent angle and pressure for each foot during exercise in real time. It is expected that patient's exercising effect can increase by self-monitoring these two values during exercise.

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Polyclonal sera from typhoid patients and a monoclonal antibody, mAb ATVi, which recognizes the capsular polysaccharide Vi antigen (ViCPS), were used to select for peptides that mimic the ViCPS by using a phage‐displayed random 12‐mer peptide library. Two major common mimotopes selected from the library carried the amino acid sequences TSHHDSHGLHRV and ENHSPVNIAHKL. Enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) showed that these peptides carry mimotopes to ViCPS. Phage clones that contained the 12‐mer peptides were also tested against pooled/individual typhoid patients' sera and found to have 3 to 5 times higher binding compared to normal sera. By using Phage‐ELISA assays, the derived …

The Function Of Stilt Roots In The Growth Strategy Of Socratea Exorrhiza (Arecaceae) At Two Neotropical Sites, Gregory R. Goldsmith, Rakan A. Zahawi
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Arboreal palms have developed a variety of structural root modifications and systems to adapt to the harsh abiotic conditions of tropical rain forests. Stilt roots have been proposed to serve a number of functions including the facilitation of rapid vertical growth to the canopy and enhanced mechanical stability. To examine whether stilt roots provide these functions, we compared stilt root characteristics of the neotropical palm tree Socratea exorrhiza on sloped ( > 20°) and flat locations at two lowland neotropical sites. S. exorrhiza (n=80 trees) did not demonstrate differences in number of roots, vertical stilt root height, root cone circumference, root …

Similar Levels Of X-Linked And Autosomal Nucleotide Variation In African And Non-African Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Nadia D. Singh, J. Michael Macpherson, Jeffrey D. Jensen, Dmitri A. Petrov
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Levels of molecular diversity in Drosophila have repeatedly been shown to be higher in ancestral, African populations than in derived, non-African populations. This pattern holds for both coding and noncoding regions for a variety of molecular markers including single nucleotide polymorphisms and microsatellites. Comparisons of X-linked and autosomal diversity have yielded results largely dependent on population of origin.
Results: In an attempt to further elucidate patterns of sequence diversity in Drosophila melanogaster, we studied nucleotide variation at putatively nonfunctional X-linked and autosomal loci in sub-Saharan African and North American strains of D. melanogaster. We combine our experimental …

Groundwater Quality Of Springs And Wells Of The Sinkhole Plain In Southwestern Illinois: Determination Of The Dominant Sources Of Nitrate Circular 570 2007, K. C. Hackley, S. V. Panno, H. H. Hwang
KIP Articles
About half the residents living in the area of southwestern Illinois known as the sinkhole plain obtain their potable water from the region's shallow karst aquifer. Previous work has shown that the groundwater from approximately 18% of the wells in the sinkhole plain has nitrate concentrations in excess of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's drinking water standard of 10 mg of N/L of water. The nitrate concentrations in water samples collected from approximately 50% of the wells and from all of the springs in the sinkhole plain area are greater than background concentrations, suggesting that sources other than naturally occuring …

Utilization Of Corn Co-Products In The Beef Industry: Feeding Of Corn Milling Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Richard J. Rasby
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Corn milling co-products are expected to increase dramatically in supply as the ethanol industry expands. Distillers grains, corn gluten feed, or a combination of both co-products offer many feeding options when included in pasture and feedlot diets. These co-product feeds may effectively improve cattle performance and operation profitability. When these co-products are fed in feedlot diets, adjustments to grain processing method and roughage level may improve cattle performance. Innovative storage methods for wet co-products and the use of dried co-products offer small operations flexibility when utilizing co-products. As new co-products are developed by ethanol plants, they should be evaluated with …

Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic commonly used by US physicians, has recently been shown to be a powerful anti-depressant and is also capable of eliciting transpersonal experiences that can be transformative. Although currently approved in the US only for use as an anesthetic, physicians there can legally prescribe it off-label to treat various psychological/ psychiatric problems and it has been used for these non-anesthetic purposes in Argentina, Iran, Mexico, Russia, and the UK, as well as in the US. The literature on using ketamine psychotherapeutically is reviewed and two case studies using ketamine-enhanced psychotherapy (KEP) for treating death anxiety in terminally-ill …
