Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning And Action Processes For Social Change And Sustainability : The Case Of A Regional Food System Effort In The Pacific Northwest, Janet Michelle Hammer Jan 2007

Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning And Action Processes For Social Change And Sustainability : The Case Of A Regional Food System Effort In The Pacific Northwest, Janet Michelle Hammer

Dissertations and Theses

Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning and Action (MCLA) is defined as a type of multi-stakeholder process that convenes diverse system members for the purpose of increasing individual and system knowledge and facilitating individual and collaborative activity supportive of movement toward a shared vision or goal. Despite increased theoretical and practitioner attention to the topic, questions remain regarding what reasonably to expect from MCLA processes and how best to design them. Further, little research has addressed the assertion that certain MCLA processes can facilitate domain development. Addressing these questions, this case study applies quantitative and qualitative methods to the analysis of two components …

The Philosophical Quest Of Tom Joad In The Grapes Of Wrath, Eun-Young Lim Jan 2007

The Philosophical Quest Of Tom Joad In The Grapes Of Wrath, Eun-Young Lim

Masters Theses

When the merciless Dust Bowl sweeps through Oklahoma in The Grapes of Wrath, the major questions of what can be achieved by thinking and how can ordinary men overcome these critical circumstances pervade the entire novel. This thesis focuses on how Tom Joad, the protagonist in this novel, grows in his philosophical quest, based mainly on Steinbeck's assertion that "Need is the stimulus to concept, concept to action."

Although Tom Joad is portrayed as a cynical, convicted killer who responds to stimuli or from impulse at first, he undergoes his journey both literally and metaphorically from Oklahoma to the promised …

Three Decades Of Protest In Berlin Land-Use Planning, 1975-2005, Carol Hager Jan 2007

Three Decades Of Protest In Berlin Land-Use Planning, 1975-2005, Carol Hager

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Protest mobilization is often assumed to be temporary. This is not the case in Germany, as a look at grassroots mobilization in Berlin reveals. Protest arose there in the 1970s, as in Germany generally, over siting of a large energy project. Activists attacked not only the project itself, but also the legitimacy of the technocratic policymaking that produced it. Subsequent government efforts to streamline land-use planning have kept the legiti mation issue alive. Lacking an institutional home for citizen participation in planning, protesters in Berlin and elsewhere continue to play a vital role in forcing policymakers to take residents' views …

Brownfields At 20: A Critical Reevaluation, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

Following a basic description of the New Jersey program, I will discuss two specific developments, the BDA initiative and the recent "Grace Period Rule," that changed some aspects of the program. My aim is more modest than a full-scale re-evaluation of all brownfields programs (or indeed of the New Jersey program in its totality); instead I look at the experience within one program to assess whether there is movement toward the development-centered approach. I find that some developments in New Jersey are positive, notably the BDA's approach to addressing multiple brownfield sites concurrently in the same location. On the other …

Multifunctional Rural Landscapes: Economic, Environmental, Policy, And Social Impacts Of Land Use Changes In Nebraska, Twyla M. Hansen, Charles A. Francis, J. Dixon Esseks, J. Allen Williams Jr. Jan 2007

Multifunctional Rural Landscapes: Economic, Environmental, Policy, And Social Impacts Of Land Use Changes In Nebraska, Twyla M. Hansen, Charles A. Francis, J. Dixon Esseks, J. Allen Williams Jr.

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The conversion of farmland near cities to other human uses is a global trend that challenges our long-term capacity to provide food, fiber, and ecosystem services to a growing world population. If current trends continue in the United States, the population will reach 450 million by the year 2050. At the same time, an accelerating change in land use will reduce today’s two acres per person of farmland to less than one acre per person. This is scarcely enough to produce food for our domestic population, without any food available for export – even assuming advances in technology. We need …

Sustainable Futures: A Community-Based Interdisciplinary Studio: Summer 2007, 2007, Monteverde Institute

Monteverde Institute: Sustainable Design, Planning and Community Development

This ten-week course of study is designed to offer university students and interested professionals the opportunity to live and work in a rural, but rapidly developing region in Costa Rica on projects concerned with creating futures that are ecologically and socially just. This is a multi-disciplinary program that uses theory and practice as the learning approach, and introduces issues such as how one organizes to do work and how to engage a diverse and complex community in place-making. The studio projects take place within a community-based learning environment where students learn from residents about local history and conditions and incorporate …

"Appalachian Ingenuity" In Action: Activists Reach Beyond Traditional Economic Development In Kentucky, Stephanie Ann Blessing Jan 2007

"Appalachian Ingenuity" In Action: Activists Reach Beyond Traditional Economic Development In Kentucky, Stephanie Ann Blessing

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This Thesis is an exploration into social change strategies in Appalachia that are alternative to conventional economic development practices and discourses. Drawing from original interviews with social justice activists in central and eastern Kentucky, I document a diversity of subversive discourses circulating in Appalachia, and I delineate models alternative to development that are driving action in several different communities. Through what one of my interviewees described as Appalachian ingenuity,1 individuals are enacting extremely hopeful and imaginative projects, and they are conjuring unique formulations that contribute to academic theories on alternative economies, capitalocentrism, neoliberalism, postmodern economics, anti-development, post-development, and spatial strategies …

This Is The Right Place: Community-Based Art Education At Utah's Springville Museum Of Art, Mark Graham, Sharon R. Gray

Faculty Publications

The human condition in the post-modern world is increasingly nomadic. A sense of displacement and alienation is pervasive. Schools emphasize abstracted knowledge removed from the experience of students. Many people feel detached from the places where they live and have no particular sense of belonging or responsibility toward their communities. Museums can counter this pervasive restlessness and be a powerful source of community renewal. This article draws connections between place-based education theory and the educational mission of the art museum, as illustrated by the Springville Museum of Art. The small town of Springville, Utah enjoys an unparalleled connection with its …

The Perfect Storm: Catastrophic Collapse In The 21st Century, Glen Kuecker Jan 2007

The Perfect Storm: Catastrophic Collapse In The 21st Century, Glen Kuecker

This paper utilizes complex systems theory to argue that we are currently living in catastrophic collapse of the global system. It focuses on topics like climate chance, ecological destruction, pandemics, fuel shortages, warfare, and global hunger to illustrate the interconnections between multiple points of failure within the global system. The argument maintains that sustainability perspectives miss the fundamental reality of the global crisis.

This shift from defending and reacting to creating and envisioning requires a more engaged organizational role for the lawyer. The lawyer is now expected to do more than translate the organization/community's grievance into discreet legal frameworks and discourse---e.g., a civil rights violation, a nuisance, participatory right, etc. The lawyer now intervenes in negotiations from which the organization or community has been excluded. This new role requires a shifting, flexible mix of skills and a more dynamic interaction with the organization and its varied functions-policy, community education, lobbying, and organizing. This new role is what we call "integrative lawyering," an emergent …

The Demise Of Industrial Education For African Americans: | |Revisiting The Industrial Curriculum In Higher Education, William L. Allen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the causes that led African Americans to resist industrial education higher education, which ended industrial training programs in predominantly Black colleges and universities during the 1920s.

Three key factors helped create this reform movement: 1) the death of Booker T. Washington; 2) the improved educational levels of African Americans; and 3) the rise in aspirations of African Americans to expand the benefits of higher education. The loss of the Civil War caused a reorientation of southern and economic conditions.

Newly freed slaves had to be granted citizenship. Southern Whites were more concerned …

Moving Boxes Closer To Home: The Role Of Sysco Corporation In Food System Localization, David Scott Kennedy Jan 2007

Moving Boxes Closer To Home: The Role Of Sysco Corporation In Food System Localization, David Scott Kennedy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Increasing demand for local food by foodservice establishments creates new opportunities and challenges for the local food movement. While there is considerable potential for local suppliers to sell more product volume closer to home, the business needs of foodservice establishments may not be compatible with direct marketing approaches that have fueled the growth of the movement. Foodservice establishments typically rely on distributors to provide them with the majority of their food. Drawing on the success of direct marketing, new indirect marketing approaches that link producers and consumers through intermediaries are increasingly advanced within food system localization. The dominance of SYSCO …
