Political Warfare In Sub-Saharan Africa: U.S. Capabilities And Chinese Operations In Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, And South Africa, Donovan C. Chau Dr. Mar 2007

Political Warfare In Sub-Saharan Africa: U.S. Capabilities And Chinese Operations In Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, And South Africa, Donovan C. Chau Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Domestic and international terrorism aside, the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), are vying for influence over African governments and people. Not unlike the Cold War, the primary means of exerting influence in Africa is through the use of nonviolent instruments of grand strategy. The author considers one nonviolent instrument of grand strategy in particular, political warfare. He suggests that the PRC has used political warfare as its leading grand strategic instrument in Africa and offers a concise, detailed overview of U.S. capabilities to conduct political warfare in Africa in four of its nation-states.

Cyberqueers In Taiwan: Locating Histories Of The Margins, Terri He Feb 2007

Cyberqueers In Taiwan: Locating Histories Of The Margins, Terri He

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this paper I direct the focus to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) online communities in Taiwan. On the one hand, I argue that such online communities in Taiwan are worthwhile researching and deserve special academic attention because they touch upon Taiwan’s perpetual difference in the world as a de-facto, thereby questioning how a transnational perspective permanently influences or even changes the way national identity is or is not formulated. On the other, against the backdrop of globalisation, I highlight the fact of under-theorisation of issues and politics of sexuality dissidence in a non-western, non-dominant location and culture such …

Title: Tourism and the Environment in Small Island Developing States: Development of a New Framework for Assessing Sustainability Author: Katie L.K. Kimmel Thesis Summary: Purpose. The purpose of this thesis is to develop an analytical framework that can be used to better understand the impacts of tourism on small island developing states (SIDS). In particular, the framework will address tourism in light of sustainability goals(environmental, economic, social, and political). Because tourism is both a major economic driver for many SIDS, as well as a primary cause of environmental degradation within these states, a framework is needed that allows for systemic, …

Perceptions Of Quality Of Life, Sense Of Community, And Life Satisfaction Among Elderly Residents In Schuyler And Crete, Nebraska, Rodrigo Cantarero, James J. Potter, Christina K. Leach

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The purpose of this study is to identify key indicators affecting the elderly population's perception of Quality of Life (QoL) in two rural Nebraska communities--Crete and Schuyler. It also explores QoL indicators affecting their sense of satisfaction with living in the community and their perception of the town's sense of community. The current analysis is based on data obtained in two prior studies conducted by the authors. The results indicate that a majority of the elderly were satisfied. We also corroborated other studies' findings in which stress is negatively related to QoL. Finally, we confirmed a positive relation between strong …

Cross-Training Christians For Rural Servant-Leadership : An Exploration Of The Role Of A Congregation In Nurturing Leadership In The Community Of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, John H. Paulson

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This study explores the relationship between what is learned and experienced in the Christian faith community and people’s involvement in collaborative leadership within the rural community of Wessington Springs, South Dakota. The author makes use of Martin Luther’s theology of the cross and his teachings regarding Christian vocation, including the calling of parents as family leaders. This approach to leadership development employs a missional ecclesiology, with attention to the Triune God’s transformative, sending work in the world, and examines contributions from knowledge about civil society and human and social capital. Asset mapping is examined as a tool for leadership development.

This position paper argues that the Web 2.0 phenomenon is an important object of study for information systems research, and that a social informatics approach to understanding Web 2.0 is particularly relevant and useful. We discuss Wikipedia as an example of empirical research on Web 2.0 that can help bridge the divide between academic and popular discourse on new technology movements.

Moral Purpose And Shared Leadership: The Leaders Transforming Learning And Learners Pilot Study, Michael Bezzina Jan 2007

Moral Purpose And Shared Leadership: The Leaders Transforming Learning And Learners Pilot Study, Michael Bezzina

2007 - The Leadership Challenge - Improving learning in schools

Shared leadership in education has been the focus of a great deal of activity, but less attention has been paid to shared moral purpose and to the connection between it and shared leadership in the pursuit of learning. The Leaders Transforming Learning and Learners (LTLL) pilot program set out to explore this gap. This paper presents some of the emerging understandings from the pilot, drawing in particular on focus group interviews, journals and web-based discussions as a source of data. The study reinforces the importance of shared moral purpose, but emphasises the need for explicitness which is supported through a …

Damming Grand Canyon: The 1923 Usgs Colorado River Expedition, Diane E. Boyer, Robert H. Webb

All USU Press Publications

In 1923, America paid close attention, via special radio broadcasts, newspaper headlines, and cover stories in popular magazines, as a government party descended the Colorado to survey Grand Canyon. Fifty years after John Wesley Powell's journey, the canyon still had an aura of mystery and extreme danger. At one point, the party was thought lost in a flood. Something important besides adventure was going on. Led by Claude Birdseye and including colorful characters such as early river-runner Emery Kolb, popular writer Lewis Freeman, and hydraulic engineer Eugene La Rue, the expedition not only made the first accurate survey of the …

Sustainable Living: Theme Of The Future Or A One-Hit Wonder, Michelle Hershman Jan 2007

Sustainable Living: Theme Of The Future Or A One-Hit Wonder, Michelle Hershman

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

Look out America; we have a "smug alert." No, not smog, "smug." According to the notorious cartoon, South Park, people who buy hybrid cars feel so good about saving the Earth, they become increasingly smug, which leads to all-out disaster.' Fortunately, for the town of South Park, one of its native children, Stan, convinces everyone it's alright to own a hybrid without being smug. Should we pass this episode off as another entertaining late night Comedy Central special, or have Matt Stone and Trey Parker stumbled onto a form of satire that's true in form and educational in its moral? …

All UNF Research

Increasingly, social capital, defined as shared norms, trust, and the horizontal and vertical social networks that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutually beneficial collective action, is seen as an important asset upon which people rely to manage natural resources and resolve conflicts. This paper uses empirical data from households and community surveys and case studies, to examine the role, strengths, and limits of social capital in managing conflicts over the use and management of natural resources. We inventoried over 700 cases ranging from conflicts between multiple resource users to supra-community conflicts between local communities concerns for better livelihoods and national/international …

Accelerating Adoption Of Fire Science And Related Research, Jamie Barbour Jan 2007

Accelerating Adoption Of Fire Science And Related Research, Jamie Barbour

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Since its inception in 1998, the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) has funded over 350 projects. The Joint Fire Science Program has long recognized that the investments made in wildland fire science need to be accompanied by an emphasis on science interpretation and delivery. Program success is ultimately measured by how well information from research efforts is being conveyed to resource managers and end users, and whether this information is improving management decisions. This project introduced a conceptual model for an adaptive process to improve the delivery of scientific information. We developed this process through these steps: 1. Creating a …

Disaster Mitigation Through Land Use Strategies, John R. Nolon Jan 2007

Disaster Mitigation Through Land Use Strategies, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The persistent question this book raises is who should decide whether and how to mitigate the damages caused by natural disasters. Our understandable preoccupation with response, recovery, and rebuilding makes it hard to focus on this question as a central, even relevant, one. But it persists, nonetheless. The high-profile “blame game” played following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the Gulf Coast is emblematic. In pointing fingers first at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), then at the city of New Orleans, and then at the state of Louisiana, public officials exhibited an appalling lack of understanding of the roles that each …

Urban Middle School Teachers' Efficacy Change Resulting From Project Adventure's Year -Long Respect Curricular Intervention: A Quasi -Experimental Design With Corroborating Data, M Brooke Moran Jan 2007

Urban Middle School Teachers' Efficacy Change Resulting From Project Adventure's Year -Long Respect Curricular Intervention: A Quasi -Experimental Design With Corroborating Data, M Brooke Moran

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 30 years of research highlight the effect teachers' beliefs about their teaching abilities (i.e., teacher efficacy) have on their professional actions (i.e., teachers' effectiveness). Yet the literature addressing this connection lacks extensive insight into how to raise teachers' efficacy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Project Adventure's RESPECT Program in raising middle school teachers' efficacy in four northeastern urban public schools.

This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study tracked 68 teachers' efficacy change over the course of one school year. Teacher Efficacy (TE) change was measured using the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale's (TSES) following subscales: Student …

The Image Of God, Servant-Leadership And Forgiveness, Karen Petersen Finch Jan 2007

The Image Of God, Servant-Leadership And Forgiveness, Karen Petersen Finch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The image of the leader as servant has come to exercise a profound influence within secular organizations (Spears, 1995, p. 3). Yet one can argue that its antecedents are in the religious world. Servant-leadership is a major theme in the Judea-Christian tradition, from the weeping Joseph embracing his brothers (Genesis 45:15, New Oxford Annotated Bible) to Jesus washing the feet of his disciples (John 13:5). The image also figures in Islam, Zen and Taoism (Vanourek, 1995, p. 300). Robert K. Greenleaf (1977), whose writings brought the image of the servant-leader into the public imagination, was a Quaker; his seminal essay …
