Hebi Sani: Mental Well Being Among The Working Class Afro-Surinamese In Paramaribo, Suriname, Aminata Cairo
Hebi Sani: Mental Well Being Among The Working Class Afro-Surinamese In Paramaribo, Suriname, Aminata Cairo
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes the results of a two year anthropological investigation into the concept of mental well being among the working class Afro-Surinamese population in Paramaribo, Suriname. More specifically, the research investigated how working class Afro-Surinamese in Paramaribo, Suriname define and maintain their sense of mental well-being, given their unique ethnic identity within a multi-ethnic and multicultural society, and given that their environment is heavily compromised by negative globalizing forces Over the course of two years a total of 62 people contributed information through group and individual interviews, which was supplemented by information obtained through participant observation. Findings show a …
Ripening And Postharvest Management Of Pawpaw Fruit, Federica Galli
Ripening And Postharvest Management Of Pawpaw Fruit, Federica Galli
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal) has significant potential as a new fruit crop. During ripening, loss of firmness is extremely rapid, and this trait may be the biggest obstacle to the development of a broader market as handling without injury is difficult. Cold storage of pawpaw seems limited to 4 weeks at 4 C. A study of several cultivars with commercial appeal showed that ripening traits such as ethylene production, respiration and loss of firmness were similar in all genotypes, and that no cultivar showed superior responses to cold storage. Cold storage for longer than 4 weeks caused the development …
Neonatal Immune Modulation To Improve Pneumocystis Clearance, Kerry Mcgarr Empey
Neonatal Immune Modulation To Improve Pneumocystis Clearance, Kerry Mcgarr Empey
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Pneumocystis carinii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes lifethreatening pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals. Infants appear to be particularly susceptible to Pneumocystis (PC) pulmonary infections. The higher incidence of PC as well as other pulmonary infections among infants is likely due to an immature immune system. The neonatal lung environment is deficient immunologically in preterm as well as term infants (1, 2). Decreased phagocytic capacity of macrophages in newborns may increase the risk of infection from inhaled pathogens (1, 2). We have previously demonstrated that there is approximately a 3-week delay in the clearance of PC organisms from pup mouse …
Breeding For Value-Added Traits In Soft Winter Wheat, Carrie Ann Knott
Breeding For Value-Added Traits In Soft Winter Wheat, Carrie Ann Knott
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Increased interest in value-added traits of soft winter wheat (SWW; Triticum aestivum L.), such as white-seed coat and gluten strength, has resulted from economic incentives for these traits. The first objective of this study was to determine whether differences existed between red- and white- seeded progeny of 17 populations. When abiotic and biotic stresses were negligible, significant differences were not detected between red- and white-seeded progeny, except for yield: red-seeded progeny had a significantly higher yield than the white-seeded progeny. However, when abiotic and biotic stresses were larger, the yield of white-seeded progeny was not significantly different from red-seeded progeny …

Diversity In A Japanese Transplant: The Effect Of Gender, Race, Age, And Employment Status On Teamwork, Elena Darina Lepadatu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Diversity and Teamwork are currently some of the trendiest human resources strategies of boosting team performance and ultimately, organizational performance. This study analyzes the impact of gender, racial, age and employment status diversity on teamwork, and is one of the first studies on diversity and teamwork in the mature phase of Japanese transplants. The theoretical framework includes elements of the symbolic interactionist theory, Kanter.s theory on tokenism, revised contact hypothesis and perspectives on cultural diversity (Ely and Thomas, 2001). The data were collected from interviews with 87 workers from 16 production teams working on the assembly line at a top …
The Design And Synthesis Of Novel Chelates For The Precipitation Of Mercury, Aaron Robert Hutchison
The Design And Synthesis Of Novel Chelates For The Precipitation Of Mercury, Aaron Robert Hutchison
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Mercury has been an element of great industrial importance since early times. This wide utilization of the element has led to pervasive mercury contamination in theglobal environment. Due to mercury's high toxicity, this is a matter of great concern. Anumber of methods, includ ing phytoremediation, filtration, and precipitation/chelation,have been investigated to remove mercury from the environment. Unfortunately, thesemethods are not entirely satisfactory for the in-situ remediation of mercury from aqueousenvironments. The hypothesis of this dissertation is that this can best be accomplished by theaddition of a large and flexible sulfur-based chelate, that will bind mercury in atetracoordinate and presumably tetrahedral environment, to …
Prevention Of Hormonal Mammary Carcinogenesis In Rats By Dietary Berries And Ellagic Acid, Harini Sankaran Aiyer
Prevention Of Hormonal Mammary Carcinogenesis In Rats By Dietary Berries And Ellagic Acid, Harini Sankaran Aiyer
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women around the world. The hormone 17-estradiol (E2) is strongly implicated as a causative agent in this cancer. Since estrogen acts as a complete carcinogen, agents that interfere with the carcinogenic actions of E2 are required. Most agents effective against experimental mammary carcinogenesis have been employed as pure compounds disregarding the synergy that exists between several phytonutrients in a whole food. In these studies we have taken a unified approach, by employing a pure phytonutrient ellagic acid and whole foods that contain the phytonutrient at various levels berries, in the prevention …
Influence Of The Serotonergic System On Physiology, Development, And Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sameera Dasari
Influence Of The Serotonergic System On Physiology, Development, And Behavior Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sameera Dasari
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The regulation and modulation of the serotonergic system is clinically significant in humans. Abnormally low levels of serotonin can result in depression and conditions like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, sudden infant death syndrome, and eating disorders. The mechanistic role of serotonin (5-HT) on the neural circuits related with these diseases is not definitively known. Drosophila is a simple model system that provides an advantage over vertebrates to modify genetically and for electrophysiological studies on identifiable cells. In this organism the sensory-CNS-motor circuit is modulated by 5-HT, octopamine (OA), and dopamine (DA), which gives one insight that these …
Carbon Nanotube Augmentation Of A Bone Cement Polymer, Brock Holston Marrs
Carbon Nanotube Augmentation Of A Bone Cement Polymer, Brock Holston Marrs
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Acrylic bone cement is widely used as a structural material in orthopaedics, dentistry, and orofacial surgery. Although bone cement celebrates four decades of success, it remains susceptible to fatigue fracture. This type of failure can directly lead to implant loosening, revision surgery, and increased healthcare expenditures. The mechanism of fatigue failure is divided into three stages: 1) fatigue crack initiation, 2) fatigue crack propagation, and 3) fast, brittle fracture. Adding reinforcing fibers and particles to bone cement is a proposed solution for improving fatigue performance. The mechanical performance of these reinforced bone cements is limited by fiber ductility, fibermatrix de-bonding, …
Investigation Of The Assembly Of Surfactants At The Solid-Liqid Interface For Adsorption And Materials Applications, Rong Xing
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses two topics associated with the assembly of surfactants at the solid-liquid interface for adsorption and materials synthesis. The first is the adsorption of an anionic fluorinated surfactant, tetraethylammonium perfluorooctylsulfonate (TEA-FOS), at the solid/liquid interface. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to study the adsorption kinetics and average orientation of surfactants at the hydroxylated germanium surface. Atomic force microscopy provides complementary images of the adsorbed layer structure on mica. The adsorption follows unusual three-stage kinetics in which the rate of adsorption starts fast, slows as the surface becomes crowded, and then (surprisingly) accelerates due to …
The Contextual Elements Of Political Tolerance: A Multilevel Analysis Of The Effects Of Threat Environment And Domestic Institutions On Political Tolerance Levels, Marc Lawrence Hutchison
The Contextual Elements Of Political Tolerance: A Multilevel Analysis Of The Effects Of Threat Environment And Domestic Institutions On Political Tolerance Levels, Marc Lawrence Hutchison
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Although largely overlooked in much of the previous research on political tolerance, I argue that contextual factors, specifically state-level features, play a significant role in influencing individual tolerance judgments. Drawing from extant theories of public opinion, international conflict, and political institutions, I seek to further our understanding of the determinants of political tolerance by trying to answer the following question: What accounts for the significant differences in political tolerance levels across countries? While models using individual-level predictors account for some of the disparity in tolerance levels, a substantial amount remains unexplained. I assert that several macro-level theoretical frameworks offer compelling …
A Comparison Of Select Trunk Muscle Thickness Change Between Subjects With Low Back Pain Classified In The Treatment-Based Classification System And Asymptomatic Controls, Kyle Benjamin Kiesel
A Comparison Of Select Trunk Muscle Thickness Change Between Subjects With Low Back Pain Classified In The Treatment-Based Classification System And Asymptomatic Controls, Kyle Benjamin Kiesel
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The purposes of this dissertation were to determine: 1) the relationship betweenmuscle thickness change (MTC) as measured by rehabilitative ultrasound imaging(RUSI) and EMG activity in the lumbar multifidus (LM), 2) if motor control changesproduced by experimentally induced pain are measurable with RUSI, 3) if a differenceexists in MTC between subjects with low back pain (LBP) classified in the treatmentbasedclassification system (TBC) system and controls, 4) if MTC improves followingintervention.Current literature suggests sub-groups of patients with LBP exist and responddifferently to treatment, challenging whether the majority of LBP is "nonspecific". TheTBC system categorizes subjects into one of four categories (stabilization, mobilization, direction …
Anisotropic Polarized Light Scatter And Molecular Factor Computing In Pharmaceutical Cleaning Validation And Biomedical Spectroscopy, Aaron Andrew Urbas
Anisotropic Polarized Light Scatter And Molecular Factor Computing In Pharmaceutical Cleaning Validation And Biomedical Spectroscopy, Aaron Andrew Urbas
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Spectroscopy and other optical methods can often be employed with limited or no sample preparation, making them well suited for in situ and in vivo analysis. This dissertation focuses on the use of a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and polarized light scatter for two such applications: the assessment of cardiovascular disease, and the validation of cleaning processes for pharmaceutical equipment. There is a need for more effective in vivo techniques for assessing intravascular disorders, such as aortic aneurysms and vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. These, and other cardiovascular disorders, are often associated with structural remodeling of vascular walls. NIRS has previously been demonstrated as …
Microelectrode Array Recordings Of L-Glutamate Dynamics In The Brains Of Freely Moving Rats, Erin Cathleen Rutherford
Microelectrode Array Recordings Of L-Glutamate Dynamics In The Brains Of Freely Moving Rats, Erin Cathleen Rutherford
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
L-glutamate (Glu) is the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter inthe mammalian central nervous system (CNS) and is associated with a widevariety of functions including motor behavior and sensory perception. Whilemicrodialysis methods have been used to record tonic levels of Glu, little isknown about the more rapid changes in Glu signals that may occur in awakeanimals. We have previously reported acute recording methods using anenzyme-based microelectrode array (MEA) with fast temporal resolution (800msec), that is minimally invasive and is capable of detecting low levels of Glu (andlt;0.2 ??M) in anesthetized animals with little interference from other analytes. Wehave made a series of modifications …
Applying Reaction Time (Rt) And Event-Related Potential (Erps) Measures To Detect Malingered Neurocognitive Deficit, Victoria Louise Vagnini
Applying Reaction Time (Rt) And Event-Related Potential (Erps) Measures To Detect Malingered Neurocognitive Deficit, Victoria Louise Vagnini
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the ability of reaction time (RT) and Event-Related Potentials (ERP) to detect malingered neurocognitive deficit (MNCD)in two new tasks compared to the TOMM (N = 47). Honest (HON), malingering (MAL), and traumatic brain injury (TBI) groups were compared on accuracy, RT and ERP measures. Overall, the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) accuracy was the most effective at classifying groups (hit rate = 100%). Several non-TOMM accuracy variables and RT variables reached hit rates in the range of 71%-88%. The TOMM RT variable had an unlimited time for participants to respond and was the most successful RT variable …
Pfi-Zeke Spectroscopy And Theoretical Calculations Of Transition Metal-Aromatic Hydrocarbon Complexes, Bradford Raymond Sohnlein
Pfi-Zeke Spectroscopy And Theoretical Calculations Of Transition Metal-Aromatic Hydrocarbon Complexes, Bradford Raymond Sohnlein
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Transition metal-aromatic hydrocarbon complexes were generated in a supersonic jet and studied by zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The target metal complexes were identified using time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and their ionization thresholds were located via photoionization efficiency spectroscopy. ZEKE spectroscopy was used to measure the ionization energies and vibrational frequencies of the metal complexes. Their electronic states and corresponding molecular structures were determined by comparing the experimental spectra to quantum chemical calculations and Franck-Condon simulations. In this dissertation, the metal complexes of four different aromatic hydrocarbon ligands were studied: benzene (bz), naphthalene (np), biphenyl (bp) …
Environmental Regulatory Policy: Political Economy, Industrial Geography, And Intergovernmental Fiscal Effects, Douglas Alan Carr
Environmental Regulatory Policy: Political Economy, Industrial Geography, And Intergovernmental Fiscal Effects, Douglas Alan Carr
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Environmental regulatory policy in the U.S. is a mixture of federal, state, and local activity and impacts. This is true of air quality regulations, which are governed at the federal level by the Clean Air Act. This dissertation analyzes both the political economy of federal environmental regulations and the empirical effects of ozone regulations under the Clean Air Act.A political economy model is developed that offers a motivation for political support of national environmental policy that regulates strictly local pollution. Altering local environmental policies in other jurisdictions will cause capital migration, which may increase local welfare. Thus, individuals have an …
Automated High-Speed Monitoring Of Metal Transfer For Real-Time Control, Zhenzhou Wang
Automated High-Speed Monitoring Of Metal Transfer For Real-Time Control, Zhenzhou Wang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In the novel Double Electrode Gas Metal Arc Welding (DE-GMAW), the transfer of the liquid metal from the wire to the work-piece determines the weld quality and for applications where the precision is critical, the metal transfer process needs to be monitored and controlled to control the diameter, trajectory, and transfer rate of the droplet of liquid metal. In this doctoral research work, the traditional methods of tracking, Correlation, Least Square Matching (LSM) and Kalman Filtering (KF), are tried first. All of them failed due to the poor quality of the metal transfer image and the variety of the droplet. …
Machine Vision Recognition Of Three-Dimensional Specular Surface For Gas Tungsten Arc Weld Pool, Hongsheng Song
Machine Vision Recognition Of Three-Dimensional Specular Surface For Gas Tungsten Arc Weld Pool, Hongsheng Song
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Observing the weld pool surface and measuring its geometrical parameters is a key to developing the next-generation intelligent welding machines that can mimic a skilled human welder who observes the weld pool to adjust welding parameters. It also provides us an effective way to improve and validate welding process modeling. Although different techniques have been applied in the past few years, the dynamic specular weld pool surface and the strong weld arc complicate these approaches and make the observation /measurement difficult. In this dissertation, a novel machine vision system to measure three-dimensional gas tungsten arc weld pool surface is proposed, …
Drug Milk To Serum Ratio Prediction And Ontogeny Of Cyp3a Clearance Pathway As A Model Of Drug Exposure In The Developing Rat, Maggie Magdi Abbassi
Drug Milk To Serum Ratio Prediction And Ontogeny Of Cyp3a Clearance Pathway As A Model Of Drug Exposure In The Developing Rat, Maggie Magdi Abbassi
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Transfer of drugs into milk and the clearance of drugs in neonates are critical determinants of the exposure of infants to drugs in breast milk. Models predicting both parameters have been proposed. The objective of this dissertation is to test two models predicting milk to serum ratio and an ontogeny clearance model predicting clearance in the neonate. Predicted milk to serum ratio (M/S) values were generated according to the Atkinson and Begg model. The model did not adequately predict M/S when comparing the predicted values to observed values in the literature. The Fleishaker model was also tested. The model was …
Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao
Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prominent disease in developed countries, and age is an important factor in functional outcome. Although aged patients typically show diminished recovery compared to young patients, and have higher mortality and morbidity following TBI, the mechanism is not well understood. To date, there is no effective therapeutic for TBI. Previous studies indicate a secondary injury in TBI begins immediately after impact, and is likely the major contribution to delayed neuron dysfunction and loss. Studies also suggest mitochondrial dysfunction and increased free radical species (ROS) production following TBI may play a key role in the process. …
The Willingness To Pay For The Detection And Treatment Of Vulnerable Plaque Related To Heart Attacks, Patricia L. Ryan
The Willingness To Pay For The Detection And Treatment Of Vulnerable Plaque Related To Heart Attacks, Patricia L. Ryan
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Recent medical studies have led cardiologists to revise theories regarding the cause of heart attacks. Rather than a gradual clogging of the arteries, eruption of a vulnerable plaque is thought to be the cause of approximately 75% of all heart attacks. As a result, traditional risk factors are no longer sufficient indicators of who is at risk for a heart attack. Therefore, this research investigates the willingness to pay (WTP) for a new, hypothetical detection (screening) and treatment method for vulnerable plaque. For this study, two survey instruments were developed that take advantage of the visual and interactive aspects of …
Cyclooxygenase-2-Dependent Remodeling Of The Ductus Arteriosus, Darshini Trivedi
Cyclooxygenase-2-Dependent Remodeling Of The Ductus Arteriosus, Darshini Trivedi
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Transition of the cardiopulmonary circulation at birth requires functional closure of the ductus arteriosus (DA). The DA is an arterial shunt that is vital in the fetus for diverting the pulmonary circulation away from the uninflated lungs. Failure of the vessel to functionally close after birth is known as patent DA, which is the second most common congenital heart disease. Patent DA may seriously compromise neonatal health and current pharmacological treatments are often limited by serious complications or a significant failure rate, thereby increasing the necessity for surgical intervention. Recently, we were the first to show that genetic or pharmacological …
Numerical Analysis Of Metal Transfer In Gas Metal Arc Welding, Ge Wang
Numerical Analysis Of Metal Transfer In Gas Metal Arc Welding, Ge Wang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), metal transfer plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the resultant weld. In the present dissertation, a numerical model with advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques has been developed first in order to provide better numerical results. It includes a two-step projection method for solving the incompressible fluid flow; a volume of fluid (VOF) method for capturing free surface; and a continuum surface force (CSF) model for calculating surface tension. The Gauss-type current density distribution is assumed as the boundary condition for the calculation of the electromagnetic force. The droplet profiles, electric …

Abstract For A Look At Attitude And Achievement As A Result Of Self-Regulated Learning In The Algebra I Classroom, Darin Craig Schroeder
Abstract For A Look At Attitude And Achievement As A Result Of Self-Regulated Learning In The Algebra I Classroom, Darin Craig Schroeder
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Not often do mathematics teachers instruct to improve students' attitudes toward mathematics. The pressures to cover the state-mandated curriculum drive teachers to instruct for procedural understanding with few connections. The lack of real-life connections results in students with low motivation toward mathematics and results in poor mathematics attitude (Ma andamp; Kishor, 1997). The purpose of this mixed-methods research is to examine self-regulated learning as an instructional technique aimed at increasing mathematical attitudes while also increasing achievement and to reveal barriers to its implementation in the classroom. The research study involved an intervention in a Mid-South urban high school at the 9th …
Sic Based Solid State Power Controller, Xiaohu Feng
Sic Based Solid State Power Controller, Xiaohu Feng
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The latest generation of fighter aircraft utilizes a 270Vdc power system [1]. Such high voltage DC power systems are difficult to protect with conventional circuit breakers because the current does not automatically go to zero twice per cycle during a fault like it does in an AC power system and thus arcing of the contacts is a problem. Solid state power controllers (SSPCs) are the solid state equivalent of a circuit breaker that do not arc and which can respond more rapidly to a fault than a mechanical breaker [2]. Present SSPCs are limited to lower voltages and currents by …
New Bioinformatic Techniques For The Analysis Of Large Datasets, Justin Clay Harris
New Bioinformatic Techniques For The Analysis Of Large Datasets, Justin Clay Harris
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
A new era of chemical analysis is upon us. In the past, a small number of samples were selected from a population for use as a statistical representation of the entire population. More recently, advancements in data collection rate, computer memory, and processing speed have allowed entire populations to be sampled and analyzed. The result is massive amounts of data that convey relatively little information, even though they may contain a lot of information. These large quantities of data have already begun to cause bottlenecks in areas such as genetics, drug development, and chemical imaging. The problem is straightforward: condense …
Investigations Of Circadian Regulation And Immune-Circadian Interaction In The Horse, Barbara Anne Murphy
Investigations Of Circadian Regulation And Immune-Circadian Interaction In The Horse, Barbara Anne Murphy
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The circadian system provides animals with a means to adapt internal physiology to the constantly changing environmental stimuli that exists on a rotating planet. Light information is translated into molecular timing mechanisms within individual pacemaker cells of the mammalian hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) via transcriptionaltranslational feedback loops. Humoral and neural outputs from this master clock result in circadian rhythms of physiology and behavior. The hierarchy of the circadian system involves SCN synchronization of cellular clocks within peripheral tissues so that differential transcriptional profiles in individual organs reflect their specific function. The first step to investigating equine circadian regulation was to …
Characterization And Flow Physics Of Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators, Arvind Santhanakrishnan
Characterization And Flow Physics Of Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators, Arvind Santhanakrishnan
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Plasma synthetic jet actuators are investigated experimentally, in which the geometrical design of single dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) plasma actuators is modified to produce zero-mass flux jets similar to those created by mechanical devices. The SDBD plasma actuator consists of two rectangular electrodes oriented asymmetrically and separated by a layer of dielectric material. Under an input of high voltage, high frequency AC or pulsed DC, a region of plasma is created in the interfacial air gap on account of electrical breakdown of the ambient air. A coupling between the electric field in the plasma and the neutral air near the …
