Development And Parameter Refinement Of A Dynamic Simulation Model Of A Fixed Speed Stall Control Wind Turbine Under Start-Up Conditions, Rhonda R. Peters Dec 2007

Development And Parameter Refinement Of A Dynamic Simulation Model Of A Fixed Speed Stall Control Wind Turbine Under Start-Up Conditions, Rhonda R. Peters

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the dynamics of a fixed speed stall controlled 900 kW wind turbine connected to a 12.5 kV distribution line were modeled and verified with existing field data under start up conditions. Model components include the wind, the turbine rotor and generator, soft-start power electronics and controls, and the distribution grid. PSCAD/EMTDC (Power Systems Computer Aided Analysis and Design/Electromagnetic Transients including Direct Current) was the software platform used. Because detailed system information was not available, (and is often not) an initial model with generic parameters was first created and then refined to more closely match simulation output with …

Role Of Penicillin Binding Proteins And Amidases In Daughter Cell Separation In Escherichia Coli, Richa Priyadarshini Dec 2007

Role Of Penicillin Binding Proteins And Amidases In Daughter Cell Separation In Escherichia Coli, Richa Priyadarshini

Theses and Dissertations

In the final stages of the bacterial growth cycle, daughter cells must be released from one another by cleaving the shared peptidoglycan cell wall that separates them. Although enzymes capable of cleaving bonds in the murein sacculus are ubiquitous among the bacteria, the physiological roles of only a few of these enzymes are clear. The peptidoglycan-specific amidases play an important role in cleaving the septum to release daughter cells after cell division in Escherichia coli. E. coli has three amidases dedicated to this task: AmiA, AmiB and AmiC. These enzymes remove side chains from the peptidoglycan by hydrolyzing the bond …

Gender Performance In The Works Of Mary Davys, Barbara Glore Dec 2007

Gender Performance In The Works Of Mary Davys, Barbara Glore

Theses and Dissertations

From 1700 to 1731, Mary Davys wrote six novels, two plays, and a poem. These works reveal her abiding concern with gender relations, moral behavior, and social order. Davys's work is an articulate critique of social and sexual politics of late Stuart and early Hanoverian England. Few scholars have traced the development of her gender ideology and this aspect of her work remains underexamined. Also, the author's early years in Ireland have not been closely considered even as doing so illuminates the shaping of her world view. As products of an Anglo Irish immigrant critiquing Teaching & Learning society, her …

The Use Of Information Books In The Preschool Classroom: Possibilities For Nurturing The Young Scientific Mind, Pamela A. Langlie

Theses and Dissertations

The use of information books in the preschool classroom, and the potential of the books and the learning activities associated with the books for promoting science among young children are explored. The research was first conducted with four children at a university children's center, and then replicated in a whole class setting at a college child development lab school in another state. Using qualitative procedures the study produced several grounded theories which led to the assertion that preschoolers, independently of their teachers, select information books according to their developmental interests, and use the books for exploring scientific concepts, and to …

Analysis Of Host Responses Against The Plague, Deanna O'Bryant Dec 2007

Analysis Of Host Responses Against The Plague, Deanna O'Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is endemic to most of the world. Y. pestis' potential threat as a biological warfare agent has drawn increased attention to pathogenesis and vaccine research for the plague. A number of characteristics related both to the host response to, and bacterial pathogenesis of, Y. pestis were examined. To investigate the potential role of MHC Class II antigen presentation during the plague, HLA-DQ8αβ transgenic mice were infected with Y. pestis. DQ8 mice demonstrated a greatly enhanced age-dependent resistance to Y. pestis infection with females more resistant than males, mimicking gender differences in human plague, …

Income Growth In U.S. States: Is It Pro-Poor?, Brandon Curtis

Master's Theses - Economics

While it is generally assumed that economic growth will have a positive effect the vast majority of the population, this claim is often left unchallenged. In particular, the effect of economic growth on the low-income segment of the population is not well understood. In particular, it is not clear if 1) the poor benefit from economic growth, and if so 2) what is the size of the benefit? A growing number of studies have been devoted to answering these questions. This field of study is commonly known as the pro-poor growth literature.

Mormons, Muslims, And Multiculturalism: The Deeply Dispiriting Romney-Huckabee Religion Showdown, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

American University, WCL Research Paper No. 2008- Abstract This essay (6,000 words), which appeared in the Weekly Standard ostensibly as a comment on Mitt Romney's religion speech of December 2007, contains something to offend nearly everyone. It bluntly attacks presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and his evangelical followers for their demand for a Christian president, and calls them religious bigots. The essay also rejects, however, a central claim of Romney's religion speech, that all religious doctrines are beyond criticism or political argument - asserting that Romney, in the attempt to insulate himself from any questions of religion, has endorsed what might …

Bureacratizing Ethics: Institutional Review Boards And Participatory Research, Deborah Martin Dec 2007

Bureacratizing Ethics: Institutional Review Boards And Participatory Research, Deborah Martin

Geography

This paper provides a brief history of regulatory research ethics, as embodied in Institutional Review Boards in the United States. The purpose is to foster common disciplinary understanding of the origin and purpose of IRBs, and to identify the core conflict between the philosophies of participatory action research and regulatory ethics. That conflict centers on the contradictory language and associated understandings of research "subjects" and "participants". I suggest a need for more disciplinary engagements around this conflict, to foster more open ethical debates and competencies among geographers. © Deborah G.
