John And Margaret Keeton Donate Timberland To Benefit Um, Charities, Tina Hahn
University of Mississippi News
OXFORD, Miss. - John T. Keeton Jr. of Grenada remembers the day he went to the late Dean Robert Farley at the University of Mississippi School of Law and asked to be admitted. Certainly not a traditional law school student in 1952, Keeton arrived on campus with a wife and three young children in tow. "Dean Farley kindly accepted me when he could have chosen a younger student in my place," said Keeton, an attorney and former state senator, who also has been instrumental in the regional health care field. "I have felt indebted to him and the university for …

Theory And Numerics Of Gravitational Waves From Preheating After Inflation, Jean-François Dufaux, Amanda Bergman, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Jean-Philippe Uzan
Physics: Faculty Publications
Preheating after inflation involves large, time-dependent field inhomogeneities, which act as a classical source of gravitational radiation. The resulting spectrum might be probed by direct detection experiments if inflation occurs at a low enough energy scale. In this paper, we develop a theory and algorithm to calculate, analytically and numerically, the spectrum of energy density in gravitational waves produced from an inhomogeneous background of stochastic scalar fields in an expanding universe. We derive some generic analytical results for the emission of gravity waves by stochastic media of random fields, which can test the validity/accuracy of numerical calculations. We contrast our …

Evaluation Of The Cinical Use Of Silymarin In Knee Osteoarthritis: Application Of The Dual Inhibitory Concept Of Cyclooxygenase And 5-Lipoxygenase, Intesar Tariq Numan
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Many compounds from natural sources, including silymarin, proved to have effective inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) in vitro qnd experimental animals. The exellent pharmacological pre-clinical profile of these compounds indicates a broad range anti-inflammatory effectiveness devoid of the most troublesome side effects, which have at least impart impaired the clinical use of the classical COX inhibitors, including the newer selective COX-2 inhibitors. OBJECTIVES: This project designed to evaluate the clinical utility of silymarin, as a dual inhibitor of COX and 5-LO, as a single agent or in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) of both …
A Systematic Analysis Of The Deracialization Concept, Byron D. Orey, Boris E. Ricks
A Systematic Analysis Of The Deracialization Concept, Byron D. Orey, Boris E. Ricks
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
The concept of deracialization gained notoriety following elections held in November of 1989. During these elections, a number of African-American candidates captured victories in majority-white electoral jurisdictions, leading McConnick to coin this Election Day as "Black Tuesday." Among those elected on "Black Tuesday" include: L. Douglas Wilder as governor of Virginia, David Dinkins as mayor of New York City, Norman Rice as mayor of Seattle and Chester Jenkins, mayor of Durham, North Carolina. In this article we systematically examine the deracialization construct/strategy and the potentially damaging impact that such a strategy might pose on the black community.

Genotyping Of Human Papilloma Virus Infections And Phenotyping Of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes In Iraqi Patients With Uterine Cervical Neoplasia, Majid Mohammed Mahmmod Al-Jewari
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Among most basic and clinical investigations for detection and genotyping HPV, only In Situ Hybridization (ISH) is effective in studing the relation of HPV genome to that histopathological entity. Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILs) represent the local cellular immune response against both cervical cancer and the associated HPV. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed to investigate ISH in detection and genotyping of HPV and immunohistochemical (IHC) study in phenotyping of TILs in Iraqi women with different grades of cervical neoplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective research included a total number of 129 cervical tissue blocks , 64 with invasive and …
Extending The Information Partition Function: Modeling Interaction Effects In Highly Multivariate, Discrete Data, Paul C. Cannon
Extending The Information Partition Function: Modeling Interaction Effects In Highly Multivariate, Discrete Data, Paul C. Cannon
Theses and Dissertations
Because of the huge amounts of data made available by the technology boom in the late twentieth century, new methods are required to turn data into usable information. Much of this data is categorical in nature, which makes estimation difficult in highly multivariate settings. In this thesis we review various multivariate statistical methods, discuss various statistical methods of natural language processing (NLP), and discuss a general class of models described by Erosheva (2002) called generalized mixed membership models. We then propose extensions of the information partition function (IPF) derived by Engler (2002), Oliphant (2003), and Tolley (2006) that will allow …

Acetylation In Nuclear Receptor Signaling And The Role Of Sirtuins, Chenguang Wang, Michael J. Powell, Vladimir M. Popov, Richard G. Pestell
Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
It has been known since the early 1970s that nuclear receptor complexes bind DNA in association with co-regulatory proteins. Characterization of these nuclear receptor coregulators has revealed diverse enzymatic activities which temporally and spatially coordinate nuclear receptor activity within the context of local chromatin in response to diverse hormone signals. Chromatin modifying proteins, which dictate the higher order chromatin structure in which DNA is packaged, in turn orchestrate orderly recruitment of nuclear receptor complexes. Modifications of histones include acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, sumoylation, ADP ribosylation, deimination and proline isomerization (1). At this time, we understand how a subset of these …

Earth Sciences
We assess the quality of the version 2.2 (v2.2) HNO3 measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Earth Observing System Aura satellite. The MLS HNO3 product has been greatly improved over that in the previous version (v1.5), with smoother profiles, much more realistic behavior at the lowest retrieval levels, and correction of a high bias caused by an error in one of the spectroscopy files used in v1.5 processing. The v2.2 HNO3 data are scientifically useful over the range 215 to 3.2 hPa, with single-profile precision of ∼0.7 ppbv throughout. Vertical resolution is 3–4 km …

A number of employers, business consortia, and public purchasers are promoting "value-based purchasing" as a way to improve the quality of patient care. Some purchasers are using publicly available information on health plan and provider performance to make their health plan and provider choices, while others are using their market power to drive improvements in patient care and safety. This article examines six key strategies used by purchasers.
