Synecdoche And Surprise: Transdisciplinary Knowledge Production, Anne Dalke, Elizabeth Mccormack Jan 2007

Synecdoche And Surprise: Transdisciplinary Knowledge Production, Anne Dalke, Elizabeth Mccormack

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Using contemporary insights from feminist critical theory and the literary device of synecdoche, we argue that transdisciplinary knowledge is productive because it maximizes serendipity. We draw on student learning experiences in a course on “Gender and Science” to illustrate how the dichotomous frameworks and part-whole correspondences that are predominant in much disciplinary discourse must be dismantled for innovative intellectual work to take place. In such a process, disciplinary presumptions interrogate and unsettle one another to produce novel questions and answers.

The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane Jan 2007

The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane

Articles

There is a wealth of international research on the transition from preschool to school from a range of perspectives. Following on from such research, the issue of transition is emerging as an important new construct in early childhood care and education (ECCE), with a transition-to-school framework replacing the construct of school readiness as a focus of research interest. There has been limited research into transition practices in Ireland and this study is the first comprehensive research looking at this area from an Irish perspective1. Phase I of this study involved conducting a questionnaire on the transition from preschool to formal …

Content Analysis Of Computer Conferencing Transcripts, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2007

Content Analysis Of Computer Conferencing Transcripts, Roisin Donnelly

Papers, presentations and other resources

As conferencing tools become an increasingly common feature in students’ experience, tutors need to have an understanding of how these tools facilitate the formation and maintenance of collaborative learning communities. Inevitably the pursuit of this understanding requires some form of analysis of the interactions involved. This analysis of the written transcripts, created by students during computer mediated conferencing (CMC), invariably takes the form of a systematic content analysis. For small-scale work the analysis can be undertaken manually but when the volume is large, as might arise from courses delivered wholly online or in a blended learning approach for example, some …

A Combinatorial Approach Of Real Ga & Fuzzy To Atc Enhancement, Hossein Farahmand, Masoud Rashidinejad, Ali Akbar Gharaveici Jan 2007

A Combinatorial Approach Of Real Ga & Fuzzy To Atc Enhancement, Hossein Farahmand, Masoud Rashidinejad, Ali Akbar Gharaveici

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Under new de-regulated environment an open access to transmission system seems to be desired. Transmission system operators (TSOs) are encouraged to use the existing facilities more efficiently. This paper focuses on study of the best location for SVC as a FACTS device to improve voltage profile as well as maximum available transfer capacity (ATC) in order to achieve lower prices. Real genetic algorithm (RGA) is used for optimization technique and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) associated with fuzzy sets to obtain priority vector for each alternative to evaluate the GA fitness. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is shown through case …

Scholarship Advice For New Law Professors In The Electronic Age, Nancy Levit Jan 2007

Scholarship Advice For New Law Professors In The Electronic Age, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

The article suggests that the legal academy is in a time of transition between promotion and tenure rules based on traditional methods of publication and contemporary electronic and interdisciplinary possibilities for publication. While a number of articles contain recommendations for newer law professors about the process of scholarship, most of those articles are between five and twenty years old and do not address publishing in the age of blogs, expedited reviews, electronic submissions, and open-access databases.

The substance and length of what law professors write, the formats in which they do so, and the fora in which they publish are …

Competitive Positioning In International Logistics: Identifying A System Of Attributes Through Neural Networks And Decision Trees, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta Jan 2007

Competitive Positioning In International Logistics: Identifying A System Of Attributes Through Neural Networks And Decision Trees, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Firms involved in international logistics must develop a system of service attributes that give them a way to be profitable and to satisfy customers’ needs at the same time. How customers trade-off these various attributes in forming satisfaction with competing international logistics providers has not been explored well in the literature. This study explores the ocean freight shipping sector to identify the system of attributes that maximizes customers’ satisfaction. Data were collected from shipping managers in Singapore using personal interviews to identify the chief concerns in choosing and evaluating ocean freight services. The data were then examined using neural networks …

Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone Jan 2007

Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to design an early childhood social studies curriculum that integrated the use of children's literature, to be used in early childhood classrooms. Listening to and reading stories about social studies topics helps students to see the importance of various social studies issues and will allow them to connect personally with the theme by completing a wide range of related activities. National and state standards require students to understand many social studies concepts and using children's literature as a vehicle for learning the required standards can help students see the idea that social studies relates …

Hospice Nurses, Spiritual Development And A Changing Health Care Paradigm, Amy L. Barr Jan 2007

Hospice Nurses, Spiritual Development And A Changing Health Care Paradigm, Amy L. Barr

Master's Theses and Capstones

Recently researchers have become increasingly interested in how we are going to care for our growing elderly population. Little, however, has been done to examine the personal attitudes toward death, dying and spirituality of the professionals who care for the terminally ill. The purpose of this study is to examine spiritual development among hospice nurses who work in palliative care. Data were obtained using qualitative, in-depth interviews with 20 hospice nurses (4 males, 16 females) from ages 36 to 61. The interviews were conducted at three different hospice organizations located in the northwest, northeast and New England regions of the …

Community Service Learning: Tenth Anniversary Edition, California State University

Higher Education

Beginning in the 1990s, the CSU started to recognize the power of service learning as a vehicle that would meet the state's changing educational needs while also imparting vital civic skills and knowledge. In the past decade, service learning has become a widely accepted and effective way of enhancing the in-class academic experiences of students with the real-world, out-of-class benefits of serving the community.

The History And Development Of Dressage And Psychological Tools, Nick Onoda Jan 2007

The History And Development Of Dressage And Psychological Tools, Nick Onoda

Whittier Scholars Program

This paper has two main areas of focus. The first area details the history and development of dressage, from its original military function into its current form as an Olympic sport. The second area presents psychological tools and methods that can be used by all dressage riders to enhance performance and the relationship between horse and rider. The history of dressage and the psychological tools that help riders reach their optimal mental state may seem unrelated. However, there is a correlation. The history of dressage records how conflicting philosophies and psychological outlooks during different time periods affected the training of …

Using Technology To Develop Preservice Teachers' Reflective Thinking, Charles Dittrich, Divonna M. Stebick, Jonelle Pool, Lindsay Mccoy Jan 2007

Using Technology To Develop Preservice Teachers' Reflective Thinking, Charles Dittrich, Divonna M. Stebick, Jonelle Pool, Lindsay Mccoy

Education Faculty Publications

Developing high-level reflection skills proves troublesome for some preservice teachers. To examine the potential of an online environment for increasing productive reflection, students in three sequential undergraduate education classes responded to regular online prompts. We coded student comments for productive and unproductive reflection, knowledge integration, and analysis of the four aspects of teaching (learners and learning, subject matter knowledge, assessment and instruction ) as described by Davis, Bain, & Harrington (2001). We adapted a scoring approach recommended by Davis & Linn, (2000); Davis (2003) to analyze what aspects of teaching preservice teachers included, emphasized, and integrated when they reflected on …

Multiple Parents/Multiple Fathers, Nancy E. Dowd Jan 2007

Multiple Parents/Multiple Fathers, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Multiple parents, especially multiple fathers, are a social reality but not a legal category. The assumption that every child has, or should have, two, but only two, parents remains a core operating assumption of family law. Yet at the same time, our knowledge of the existence of multiple fathers, whether birthfathers, stepfathers, psychological fathers or other categories, has found some reflection in cases that have granted some relational rights to fathers who do not fill the single place allotted for "legal father." In this Article, Professor Dowd proposes that it is time to think not if, but how, to recognize …

The Effect Of Risk On Legal Valuation, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2007

The Effect Of Risk On Legal Valuation, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

From a financial economic perspective, the governing condition of a meritorious civil action is the uncertainty of outcome. Expectation and outcome deviate, and the spread is the measure of uncertainty (or variance). During litigation each party has an option to settle or select trial. The decision standard can be seen as an option strike price and a finding of liability as an "in-the-money" call option. This apparent optionality suggests the application of an option pricing model to legal valuation, and a small but growing body of scholarship endorses this concept. However, option theory is not the only concept. Under an …

When Lawyers Move Their Lips: Attorney Truthfulness In Mediation And A Modest Proposal, Donald C. Peters Jan 2007

When Lawyers Move Their Lips: Attorney Truthfulness In Mediation And A Modest Proposal, Donald C. Peters

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article examines whether the punch line that you can tell when lawyers are lying by confirming that their lips are moving applies to their conduct when negotiating in mediations. General surveys of lawyer honesty suggest that this perception probably does apply to the way lawyers negotiate in mediations. Only 20% of people surveyed in a 1993 American Bar Association poll described the legal profession as honest, and that number fell to 14% in a 1998 Gallup poll. However, research demonstrates a connection between honest negotiating and perceived effectiveness. A study of 5,000 Denver and Phoenix lawyers found that honest, …

Law Firms As Defendants: Family Responsibilities Discrimination In Legal Workplaces, Joan C. Williams, Stephanie Bornstein, Diana Reddy, Betsy A. Williams Jan 2007

Law Firms As Defendants: Family Responsibilities Discrimination In Legal Workplaces, Joan C. Williams, Stephanie Bornstein, Diana Reddy, Betsy A. Williams

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article analyzes how the growing trend of litigation alleging employment discrimination based on workers' family caregiving responsibilities applies to law firms and other legal employers. Our research has found at least thirty-three cases since 1990 in which employees of law firms or other legal employers--both attorneys and support staff--have sued their employers for family responsibilities discrimination (“FRD”). FRD is discrimination against employees based on their family caregiving responsibilities for newborns, young children, elderly parents, or ill spouses or partners. Here we analyze these cases, including the employee experiences that have prompted litigation and the legal theories on which the …

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2007

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article argues for a phenomenological and theological perspective of psychosis. It draws especially upon Levinas’ philosophy as a way of looking at psychosis and responding with compassion. It aims to show that the world of psychosis parallels the Levinas’ negative characterisation of both ontology and the categories of objectivity, presence and Being. This suggests that the language of ontology itself holds insights into the experience of psychosis and perhaps further that the language of alterity (otherness) could be a possible response to it. Psychosis should not be understood as a ‘psychological problem’, but rather as an altered state of …

Excuse Me, Sir; You're Sitting In A No Cell Phone Pornography Section, You'll Have To Put That Away: May The Fcc Regulate The Content Of Wireless Broadband Transmissions, H. William Beseth Iii Jan 2007

Excuse Me, Sir; You're Sitting In A No Cell Phone Pornography Section, You'll Have To Put That Away: May The Fcc Regulate The Content Of Wireless Broadband Transmissions, H. William Beseth Iii

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note will argue that the scope of the FCC's authority to regulate traditional broadcast content does not extend to the content transmitted to wireless devices via broadband transmission. Part II of this Note provides a study of the key cases that characterize the scope of the FCC's statutory authority to regulate traditional broadcast content. Additionally, Part II presents a discussion of the First Amendment and the limits it imposes on the FCC's regulation of broadcast content. Part III evaluates whether content transmitted by new technologies fits into the regulatory scope of the FCC's authority according to the tests set …

Worth Fighting For: Thirty-Five Years Of Title Ix Advocacy In The Courts, Congress And The Federal Agencies, Marcia D. Greenberger, Neena K. Chaudhry Jan 2007

Worth Fighting For: Thirty-Five Years Of Title Ix Advocacy In The Courts, Congress And The Federal Agencies, Marcia D. Greenberger, Neena K. Chaudhry

Cleveland State Law Review

This article focuses on Title IX and women's continuing struggle to secure equal opportunity on the playing fields. But athletics is not unique. Indeed, the lessons of Title IX in athletics, its importance to women and girls, and how the law has been shaped over the years by advocacy in each branch of government, apply to all the fields of endeavor that still remain only partially available to the young women of this nation. Women and girls continue to lag behind in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields, remain clustered in “traditionally female” programs such as cosmetology that …

The Sudbury School And Influences Of Psychoanalytic Theory On Student-Controlled Education, Mary Peramas Jan 2007

The Sudbury School And Influences Of Psychoanalytic Theory On Student-Controlled Education, Mary Peramas

Essays in Education

We have come to expect high degrees of authority from administrators, teachers, parents, school boards, even government, yet only a few schools have embraced the notion of total and absolute freedom of choice for the students themselves. The history of educational reforms suggests that there are three factors within the course of traditional forms of education that have served to create a model for a school on the fringe of society which has quietly endured for nearly a century. Founded upon the same principles as A.S. Neill’s Summerhill School of England, over 80 Sudbury Schools worldwide operate upon three fundamental …

Opening The Door To Possibilities: Research Journals In Pre-Service Art Education, Debrah Sickler-Voight Jan 2007

Opening The Door To Possibilities: Research Journals In Pre-Service Art Education, Debrah Sickler-Voight

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Preparing to be an art educator is a time when future teachers anticipate the endless possibilities the profession has to offer. Unfortunately, many leave teaching within a few years of service because of lack of support and preparation. This qualitative study investigates how preservice art education students enrolled in their first university art education course used the Art for Life method to create research journals. The research question that guided this study is: What themes drive student research journals and how does the exploration of these themes espouse preservice art education? After coding student journals, I discovered three majors themes …

Plazabilities For Art Education: Community As Participant, Collaborator & Curator, Kathleen Keys Jan 2007

Plazabilities For Art Education: Community As Participant, Collaborator & Curator, Kathleen Keys

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In the following article, a plaza metaphor and theories of plazability are applied to the recent work of three "Other" art educators to acknowledge, examine and articulate a refreshed vision for an art education based in community pedagogy which expands possibilities, builds community, and uses art to work for social change. Examples suggesting such achievements in creating plazability include work from a community artist backed by a visionary community arts foundation, a progressive cultural museum director and staff, and a contemporary artist each actively engaging the community in diverse ways. The innovative and community grounded practice and philosophies of these …

Teacher Motivation In Arkansas Schools, Tamekia Love Brown Jan 2007

Teacher Motivation In Arkansas Schools, Tamekia Love Brown

Theses and Dissertations

This study compared perceptions of teacher intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, dependent variables, among the independent variables of job type (teachers and administrators), years of experience (novice, experienced, and veteran), and gender. Teachers, N = 793, indicated their level of agreement with the motivation statements and 90 administrators indicated what they believe motivates teachers. Due to a low correlation between the dependent variables and small cell sizes for the novice administrators; researcher conducted univariate, rather than multivariate analyses, using a Bonferroni adjusted alpha of .017. Two independent t -tests compared teacher and administrator responses to the scales. Results indicated that teacher …

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor Jan 2007

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor

Theses and Dissertations

In reaction to criticisms of existing strain theories, Agnew (1992) developed General Strain Theory, and in doing so moved toward micro-level conceptions of strain. A return to the cultural concepts found in traditional strain theories may provide a more complete examination of delinquency/criminality, as it would incorporate the influence that culture has on rates of delinquency/criminality among certain groups in American society. This thesis adds to the knowledge base of criminological thought through the creation of a new strain theory. Sociocultural Strain Theory (SST) may provide a better explanation of delinquency/criminality, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities, by taking into consideration cultural …

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

p> This note examines the forces in play leading up to the United States Supreme Court's decision in Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic & Institutional Rights, Inc., a case in which the Court upheld a federal law conditioning the receipt of federal funding by law schools (and other institutions of higher learning) on those schools granting United States Military recruiters equal access to students, despite First Amendment claims brought by those schools. This note first explores the facts leading to the controversy that culminated in an appeal to the Supreme Court. Next, this note explores the background of the issues …
