Novel Research Translates To Clinical Cases Of Schizophrenic And Cocaine Psychosis, João V. Nunes, Patricia A. Broderick Aug 2007

Novel Research Translates To Clinical Cases Of Schizophrenic And Cocaine Psychosis, João V. Nunes, Patricia A. Broderick

Publications and Research

Pharmacotherapies for schizophrenic and cocaine psychoses are complex but similar because of similarities in their brain neurochemistry and behavioral outcomes. Their neurochemical neuronal mechanisms of action, as shown in preclinical and clinical studies, involve primarily dopaminergic dysfunction and, secondarily, neuroadaptive effects that seem to involve central serotonergic function. Behavioral outcomes of both disorders include hyperactivity and antipsychotic medications can ameliorate psychotic symptoms. Patients with both disorders often arrive at emergency departments and present floridly psychotic with a predominance of positive symptoms, often prompting physicians to select a typical antipsychotic medication such as haloperidol. While this has become conventional wisdom, we …

The Economics Of Citation, Jeong-Yoo Kim, Insik Min, Christian Zimmermann Aug 2007

The Economics Of Citation, Jeong-Yoo Kim, Insik Min, Christian Zimmermann

Economics Working Papers

In this paper, we study the citation decision of a scientific author. By citing a related work, authors can make their arguments more persuasive. We call this the correlation effect. But if authors cite other work, they may give the impression that they think the cited work is more competent than theirs. We call this the reputation effect. These two effects may be the main sources of citation bias. We empirically show that there is a citation bias in Economics by using data from RePEc. We also report how the citation bias differs across regions (U.S., Europe and Asia).

A Theory-Based Intervention To Increase Dental Utilization By Disadvantaged Children., Catherine J. Binkley Aug 2007

A Theory-Based Intervention To Increase Dental Utilization By Disadvantaged Children., Catherine J. Binkley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oral disease is the greatest unmet healthcare need of disadvantaged children in the United States, with only 20% of disadvantaged Medicaid-eligible children receiving routine dental care. Peter Margolis proposed a theoretical model of access to healthcare services and reported the effectiveness of a case manager intervention in increasing medical care utilization by disadvantaged mothers and infants. This study was based on Margolis's theory and used a case manager to assist parents in obtaining dental care. Methods. The study was based on secondary analyses of data from the "Parental Help Seeking for Dental Care" project. The randomized, controlled intervention study was …

Encountering Stereotype Threat In The Workplace : How Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Employees Meet The Challenge Of Negative Stereotyping., Gary M. Collins Aug 2007

Encountering Stereotype Threat In The Workplace : How Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Employees Meet The Challenge Of Negative Stereotyping., Gary M. Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Employee retention continues to be a major drain on the resources of organizations, especially in terms of personnel, productivity, and financial resources. One of the primary motivators of employee turnovers established by research is the issue of unfairness in the workplace. This study investigated the dimensions of unfairness related to being a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender employee. Specifically, the issue of stereotype threat and its effect on job performance was explored. Using an on-line survey, members of LGBT labor union caucuses and LGBT employee resource groups were asked to complete a questionnaire that assessed demographic differences and responses to …

The Evolution Of Color Polymorphism: Crypticity, Searching Images, And Apostatic Selection, Alan B. Bond Aug 2007

The Evolution Of Color Polymorphism: Crypticity, Searching Images, And Apostatic Selection, Alan B. Bond

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The development and maintenance of color polymorphism in cryptic prey species is a source of enduring fascination, in part because it appears to result from selective processes operating across multiple levels of analysis, ranging from cognitive psychology to population ecology. Since the 1960s, prey species with diverse phenotypes have been viewed as the evolved reflection of the perceptual and cognitive characteristics of their predators. Because it is harder to search simultaneously for two or more cryptic prey types than to search for only one, visual predators should tend to focus on the most abundant forms and effectively overlook the others. …

On Their Own Ground: Strategies Of Resistance For Sunni Muslim Women, Theresa W. Tobin Aug 2007

On Their Own Ground: Strategies Of Resistance For Sunni Muslim Women, Theresa W. Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Drawing from work in feminist moral philosophy, Tobin argues that the most common methodology used in practical ethics is a questionable methodology for addressing practical problems across diverse cultural contexts because the kind of impartiality it requires is neither feasible nor desirable. She then defends an alternative methodology for practical ethics in a global context and uses her proposed methodology to evaluate a problem that confronts many Sunni Muslim women around the world.

Constructivism In Early Childhood Education, Joseph Mills Aug 2007

Constructivism In Early Childhood Education, Joseph Mills

Perspectives In Learning

At most universities and colleges, a form of constructivism based on child psychological theories dominates the stage as the “official knowledge pre-service early childhood teachers must know to be proclaimed competent” (Livingston, 2003, p. 3). Why, then, have the understandings of how children learn and the teaching practices suggested by this theory not taken root in many early childhood classrooms? In attempting to answer this question through a review of current literature in the field, three topics of discussion have been suggested: an explanation of the development and learning theories which support constructivism, identifying classroom practices which are considered to …

The Determinants Of Executions Since 1951: How Politics, Protests, Public Opinion, And Social Divisions Shape Capital Punishment, David Jacobs, Stephanie L. Kent Aug 2007

The Determinants Of Executions Since 1951: How Politics, Protests, Public Opinion, And Social Divisions Shape Capital Punishment, David Jacobs, Stephanie L. Kent

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This time-series study uses hypotheses derived from a politically refined version of conflict theory to explain both public support for the death penalty and the number of executions. With murders in death penalty states and Supreme Court decisions held constant, tests of hypotheses about lags suggest that public support and Republican strength in the states influence yearly executions by their effects on death sentences rather than the later appeals process. Other dynamic results show that national level Republican strength, presidential elections that emphasize law and order, economic inequality, and higher murder rates increase yearly executions because they affect the extremely …

Never Alone: A "Look" At Imaginal Companions, Mary Koegel Aug 2007

Never Alone: A "Look" At Imaginal Companions, Mary Koegel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

American culture tends to consider imaginary friends (or imaginal companions, as I refer to them) as a folk belief belonging in the realm of childhood. If an adult believes in imaginal companions, they are potentially subject to the social stigma of psychological labeling. The mass media reflects this perception of reality and influences social interactions regarding experiences and beliefs in imaginal companions. Fear of this social stigma limits folk group size, which potentially creates an issue with informant group size. I gathered my informants from a group of friends, whom I interviewed over a one-year period. Although there is a …

Chronic Widespread Pain In Patients With Occupational Spinal Disorders: Prevalence, Psychiatric Comorbidity, And Association With One-Year Treatment Outcomes, Benjamin Lee Towns Aug 2007

Chronic Widespread Pain In Patients With Occupational Spinal Disorders: Prevalence, Psychiatric Comorbidity, And Association With One-Year Treatment Outcomes, Benjamin Lee Towns

Psychology Theses - Archive

Chronic Widespread Pain (CWP) is estimated to affect 4.1% - 13.5% of the general population. Compared to those who are pain-free or have localized pain, those with widespread body pain have been found to higher rates of psychiatric disorder, greater pain intensity, and greater disability. Treatment programs for CWP patients often have high drop-out rates and have only achieved modest results. The present study sought to compare demographic characteristics, psychiatric comorbidity, and one-year treatment outcomes of patients with chronic disabling occupational spinal disorers (CDOSDs) meeting criteria for CWP to those who fail to meet criteria. Within this CDOSD cohort (n …

Cognitive Independence And Cohesion In Decision-Making Groups, Kelly A. Trindel Aug 2007

Cognitive Independence And Cohesion In Decision-Making Groups, Kelly A. Trindel

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Cognitive Independence (CI) can be defined as the tendency to form opinions and make decisions based on personal knowledge as well as additional information that appears to be valid and factual. CI implies a tendency away from normative influence and toward informational influence. In this project CI is investigated in multiple forms in terms of its effects on group decision-making. Over the course of four studies the construct is identified and defined, a scale is designed to measure it and its predictive power in state and trait variable forms are investigated on the Hidden Profile group-decision-making task (Stasser & Titus, …

Bill Rodgers: Environmental Law's Captain Planet, Richard J. Lazarus Aug 2007

Bill Rodgers: Environmental Law's Captain Planet, Richard J. Lazarus

Washington Law Review

I have long thought of Bill Rodgers as environmental law's own "Captain Planet." There is, at the outset, the striking physical resemblance, which is well nigh conclusive. The square jaw and shoulders. The strong, confident look. And, of course, the hair, complete with the signature flip down onto the forehead. Sheer coincidence? I think not. But the proof of identity is far more extensive than mere similarity in outward physical appearances. For four decades, Bill Rodgers has been environmental law's oracle and steward. His encyclopedic knowledge of the substance of environmental law is legendary. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary …

Voices Echoing The Past: 'I Decided To Do Teaching Because Of The Teacher That I Had.' Thirteen Female Secondary Entry-Level Teachers Candidates Teaching Not Only What But Also How They Were Taught, Steven S. Sexton Aug 2007

Voices Echoing The Past: 'I Decided To Do Teaching Because Of The Teacher That I Had.' Thirteen Female Secondary Entry-Level Teachers Candidates Teaching Not Only What But Also How They Were Taught, Steven S. Sexton

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on a study that sought to uncover and explore the beliefs female secondary pre-service teachers held about teaching and being the teacher as they entered into their teacher education programs. The results indicated that for the participating teacher candidates it was their prior teachers in their intended subject who most informed how they saw themselves in the role as the teacher. Specifically, those secondary teachers who sought critical thinking in them as students impacted upon this teacher-role identity the most. Implications highlight the lack of research on females in secondary education and the importance in-service teachers play …
