Homework: A Nightly Ritual Beginning In The Elementary Grades, Ann-Marie N. Skaggs Aug 2007

Homework: A Nightly Ritual Beginning In The Elementary Grades, Ann-Marie N. Skaggs

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Homework has become an accepted staple within education in the United States. However, little is acknowledged regarding the influences homework has on students. The purpose of this extended literature review is to look at the influences of homework on students in the elementary grades. The following research on homework was found through books, peer-reviewed journal articles, government reports, magazine articles, and interviews. Within the research, educational, socioeconomic, and parental factors show the largest influence, both positive and negative toward homework. The author discusses future implications to better improve homework's influence on students in the elementary grades. These implications include a …

Gender In Politics, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton, Melanie M. Hughes Aug 2007

Gender In Politics, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton, Melanie M. Hughes

Sociology Research

Women’s political participation and representation vary dramatically within and between countries. We selectively review the literature on gender in politics, focusing on women’s formal political participation.

We discuss both traditional explanations for women’s political participation and representation, such as the supply of women and the demand for women, and newer explanations such as the role of international actors and gender quotas. We also ask whether women are distinctive—does having more women in office make a difference to public policy? Throughout the review we demonstrate that a full understanding of women’s political representation requires both deep knowledge of individual cases such …

A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald Aug 2007

A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study was designed using flexible research methods to explore the experiences and beliefs of overweight individuals in a cultural context. Two research questions were undertaken: the first being Do overweight individuals experience a subculture?, and the second exploring How do overweight individuals' experiences of oppression relate to whether they have a subculture or not? As an analysis of the literature revealed, the overweight population's oppression and stigmatization is often unrecognized within our greater society. With millions of Americans being classified as overweight this population is increasing in number, warranting further notice within social research. This exploratory study includes …

Report Of The Task Force On Distance Learning Policy And Practice, John Jay College Of Criminal Justice, John Jay College Of Criminal Justice - Task Force On Distance Learning Policy And And Practice

Reports and Publications from John Jay College

The Task Force has generally concluded that distance learning initiatives should only go forward with the full commitment of the college's leadership, made real by dedicated resources and personnel, and carried forward by organizational structures and policies designed to best deliver online education.

The Task Force surveyed John Jay faculty, students and administrators about their experiences with online learning at the college, finding an acceptance of distance learning and an anticipation of its expansion. The competitive landscape was surveyed as well, identifying a large number of institutions in New York and across the country 'that offer degrees in criminal justice, …

Cultural Influences In Negotiations: A Four Country Comparitive Analysis, Lynn E. Metcalf, Allan Bird, Mark F. Peterson, Mahesh Shankarmahesh, Terri R. Lituchy Aug 2007

Cultural Influences In Negotiations: A Four Country Comparitive Analysis, Lynn E. Metcalf, Allan Bird, Mark F. Peterson, Mahesh Shankarmahesh, Terri R. Lituchy

Marketing

Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of countries is scarce. A comprehensive framework having the potential to yield comparable information across countries on 12 negotiating tendencies was proposed more than 20 years ago by Weiss and Stripp; however, the framework was never operationalized or empirically tested. A review of the negotiation and cross cultural research that have accumulated over the last two decades led to refinements in the definition of the dimensions in the framework. We operationalized four dimensions in the Negotiation Orientations Framework and developed the Negotiation Orientations Inventory (NOI) to assess individual orientations on those four …

The Dual Career Of “Arirang”: The Korean Resistance Anthem That Became A Japanese Pop Hit, E. Taylor Atkins Aug 2007

The Dual Career Of “Arirang”: The Korean Resistance Anthem That Became A Japanese Pop Hit, E. Taylor Atkins

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

“Arirang” is known worldwide as the quintessential Korean folk song. Its iconic status in contemporary Korea derives from its perceived role in strengthening Korean resolve to resist the cultural violence of the Japanese colonial occupation (1905–45). A musical “skeleton” capable of countless improvised variations and interpretations, some “Arirangs” explicitly assailed the Japanese and thus were censored by colonial authorities. However, in the 1930s and 1940s, precisely the time when assimilationist pressures in colonial Korea were intensifying, Japanese songsmiths, singers, and recording companies released “Arirang” renditions in prodigious quantities, sometimes in collaboration with Korean performers. “Arirang” became the most familiar song …

Preps Surveillance: Summary Of Existing Survey Measures And Recommendations For Ongoing Efforts, Lois Biener, Karen Bogen, Catherine A. Garrett

Center for Survey Research Publications

Over the past decade or more, tobacco companies have introduced cigarettes with lower content of some toxins than regular and light cigarettes. These new cigarettes, referred to as a class as Potential Reduced Exposure Products (PREPs), have typically been introduced into test markets, not nationwide, which means they are not yet widely known or recognized by name or description by most consumers. However, the introduction of these products is of great concern to public health advocates, who do not believe that enough research, particularly long term research, has been done to know whether or not the PREPs, even if proven …

Automatic Spatial Processing Of Threatening And Positive Information In Participants With High And Low Levels Of Trait Anxiety, Ryan W. Hansen Aug 2007

Automatic Spatial Processing Of Threatening And Positive Information In Participants With High And Low Levels Of Trait Anxiety, Ryan W. Hansen

Master's Theses

The study sought to investigate potential differences in automatic spatial processing of threatening and positive information in anxious and non-anxious individuals. Participants evaluated threatening and positive words and pictures in a memory task in which the stimuli's varying spatial position was incidental to the task. Participants demonstrated increased accuracy with threatening stimuli, and a decreased accuracy when the word location varied between initial presentation and test. The results did not provide evidence that threatening stimuli were associated with an increased degree of spatial processing, or that this relationship would be influenced by trait anxiety.

Motherhood, Memory And Aging : Object Recognition Performance, Julia Margaret Friedenberg Aug 2007

Motherhood, Memory And Aging : Object Recognition Performance, Julia Margaret Friedenberg

Master's Theses

Reproductively experienced female rats have been shown to have attenuated stress responses, improved visual systems, and better memory and learning. This study sought to extend those findings by comparing aged reproductively experienced and aged virgin female rats on an object recognition task, as well as comparing levels of corticosterone and 17p-estradiol and neural activation. Multiparous (MP, 2 reproductive experiences) females performed better on the task and demonstrated quicker habituation to the task than nulliparous (NP, no reproductive experiences) females. No hormonal or neural activation differences were found. The present study contributes to the growing research areas of reproductive experience and …

Intricacies Of Development : The Impact Of Maternal Experience And Isolation On The Social Development Of Juvenile Male Rats, Lillian Maria Christon Aug 2007

Intricacies Of Development : The Impact Of Maternal Experience And Isolation On The Social Development Of Juvenile Male Rats, Lillian Maria Christon

Master's Theses

Reproductive experience induces changes in females. Parity-related differences in maternal treatment of offspring can induce enduring changes in offspring. The relationships between maternal experience, early social isolation, and development were explored in rodents in this experiment. Male rats were weaned from multiparous (MP) and primiparous (PP) mothers and placed into isolation or social housing for four weeks. They were then observed in a social-interaction test. Social behavior and neural oxytocin and vasopressin were assessed post-testing, while corticosterone levels were measured across the four weeks. Weaning was extremely stressful for all offspring. PP- and MP-raised pups exhibited differences in social behavior, …

Early Vocabulary Development In English, Mandarin, And Cantonese : A Cross-Linguistic Study Based On Childes, Shuxia Liu Aug 2007

Early Vocabulary Development In English, Mandarin, And Cantonese : A Cross-Linguistic Study Based On Childes, Shuxia Liu

Master's Theses

Early language development is an exciting topic in the field of child language acquisition. Only a limited amount of cross-linguistic studies has attempted to investigate the similarities and differences in child language development across different languages. In this thesis, I present a study based on English, Mandarin and Cantonese corpora extracted from the Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES, MacWhinney, 2000). I investigated the lexical compositions of certain lexical categories (nouns, verbs, and adjectives) in children and their caregivers’ vocabularies across eight different children age groups ranging from 13 to 60 months. ANOVA, frequency analysis, and cluster analysis were used …

Beauty And The Beast Within: On The Special Nature Of Natural World Law, Oliver A. Houck Aug 2007

Beauty And The Beast Within: On The Special Nature Of Natural World Law, Oliver A. Houck

Washington Law Review

We are here to celebrate Professor Rodgers and his life in environmental law. As it happens, they grew up together. The new notion of environmental protection gave Bill the chance of his lifetime, to which he returned his full energies, ideas, and writings. In a world of failed relationships, this one was a howling success. Although we have not seen each other more than twice in forty years, I feel a kinship with Bill that seems particularly close. The link is not simply our ages, nor our passion for environmental law, nor even the activism in which both of us …

Precaution, Science, And Learning While Doing In Natural Resource Management, Holly Doremus Aug 2007

Precaution, Science, And Learning While Doing In Natural Resource Management, Holly Doremus

Washington Law Review

Dealing with uncertainty is widely recognized as the key challenge for environmental and natural resource decisionmaking. Too often, though, that challenge is considered only from an ex ante perspective which treats uncertainty as an invariant feature that must be accounted for but cannot be changed. With respect to many natural resource management decisions, that picture is misleading. Decisions are often iterative or similar, providing significant opportunities for leaming. Where such opportunities are available and inaction is not feasible or desirable, learning while doing can provide the benefits of both the precautionary principle and scientific decisionmaking while minimizing the key weaknesses …

William H. Rodgers, Jr., And Environmental Law: Never Give Up, Keep On Going, John E. Bonine Aug 2007

William H. Rodgers, Jr., And Environmental Law: Never Give Up, Keep On Going, John E. Bonine

Washington Law Review

Despite his best efforts to give the riches of the symposium to others, Professor Rodgers could not completely deflect the attention and recognition that was being paid to his own work and example. He was required to sit and listen as words of praise fell everywhere around him. While experts were speaking, comments were also coming in by e-mail and on pieces of paper circulated during the lectures. Who was the subject of this talking circle? This essay attempts to paint a picture of Professor Rodgers's contributions to environmental law and the impact he has had on the lives of …

Cognitive Vs. Supportive Therapy For Distressed Collegians, Jean Clore Aug 2007

Cognitive Vs. Supportive Therapy For Distressed Collegians, Jean Clore

Dissertations

Rates of depressive symptoms, psychological distress, and low self-esteem appear to be growing on college campuses. Determining how best to help distressed collegians is an important public health concern, as these individuals appear to be at significant risk for further deterioration, disrupted quality of life, and impaired ability to succeed in college. This study compared the effects of (a) six sessions of cognitive therapy (CT; training in two cognitive modification strategies—building positive self-thoughts and disputing negative self-thoughts) to (b) six sessions of non-directive, supportive therapy (ST). Fifty-three students from a large mid-western university reporting low self-esteem and significant levels of …

Coordination In Distributed Organizations, Kannan Srikanth Aug 2007

Coordination In Distributed Organizations, Kannan Srikanth

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Innovative work performed in a distributed fashion does not easily lend to itself either of two classic coordination strategies - anticipatory planning or ongoing rich communication. We study how innovative work that is distributed across space and time is coordinated in global software service organizations. Our findings indicate that neither coordination by plan nor coordination by feedback play a dominant role in the coordination of distributed software services delivery. Instead, we find that the firms we studied coordinate action distributed work by relying on common ground. Common ground leads to coordinated action across locations by two means: the anticipation effect …

Who Survives On Death Row? An Individual And Contextual Analysis, David Jacobs, Jason T. Carmichael, Zhenchao Qian, Stephanie L. Kent Aug 2007

Who Survives On Death Row? An Individual And Contextual Analysis, David Jacobs, Jason T. Carmichael, Zhenchao Qian, Stephanie L. Kent

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

What are the relationships between death row offender attributes, social arrangements, and executions? Partly because public officials control executions, theorists view this sanction as intrinsically political. Although the literature has focused on offender attributes that lead to death sentences, the post-sentencing stage is at least as important. States differ sharply in their willingness to execute and less than 10 percent of those given a death sentence are executed. To correct the resulting problems with censored data, this study uses a discrete-time event history analysis to detect the individual and state-level contextual factors that shape execution probabilities. The findings show that …

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander Aug 2007

Redefining What It Means To Be A Republican: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Same-Sex Marriage, David Alexander

All Theses

This thesis examines the same-sex marriage debate within the Republican Party and how the Family Research Council and the Log Cabin Republicans construct their rhetorical arguments using Aristotelian appeals. By defining the debate according to Lloyd Bitzer's rhetorical situation, this thesis considers the rhetorical sustainability of these organizations' claims about same-sex marriage and the implications for the future of the Republican Party.
The United States is witnessing the increasing presence of gays and lesbians in the media and everyday life. The history of homosexuals living their lives behind closed doors is becoming a thing of the past. As a result …
