Design And Fabrication Of Out-Of-Plane Silicon Microneedles With Integrated Hydrophobic Microchannels, Michael S. Diehl

Theses and Dissertations

Microfabricated needles have the potential for inexpensive drug delivery without pain. The ability to deliver medication painlessly to patients will someday be not just hoped for but expected by the general public. The commercialization of this technology will also lead to other valuable technologies, such as systems that continually monitor and control insulin or other drugs in diabetic patients. This research presents fabrication procedures developed to produce pyramidal-shaped microneedles with microchannels that will allow for fluid delivery. The microchannels are etched into the substrate surface of a [100] silicon wafer using inductively coupled plasma etching. After the channel etch a …

Trap, Escape And Vision Integration: Key Adaptive Challenges Of Leadership In Conflict, Tin Muang Than Aug 2007

Trap, Escape And Vision Integration: Key Adaptive Challenges Of Leadership In Conflict, Tin Muang Than

Student Scholarship

The paper identifies trap, escape and vision integration as adaptive challenges to leadership in conflict, particularly in the context of Burma, where military government and elected parties have been in political impasse since 1990 elections. International sanctions and constructive engagement strategies have failed to bring the parties to the table. Burmese opposition leaders have found that other parties are simply unwilling to begin negotiations. In this context, what can opposition leaders do when a major actor of conflict is reluctant to enter into negotiation? Concepts are mainly drawn from theories of leadership, conflict and group. The research objective is to …

Arlecchino's Journey: Crossing Boundaries Through La Commedia Dell'arte, Janine Michelle Sobeck Aug 2007

Arlecchino's Journey: Crossing Boundaries Through La Commedia Dell'arte, Janine Michelle Sobeck

Theses and Dissertations

La commedia dell'arte is a recognized, vibrant theatrical form that emerged in Italy during the Renaissance. However, while great attention has been given to the particulars of the genre (performance techniques, important troupes, leading players), there lacks a study behind the reasoning for its vast international popularity. In this thesis, I explore why this particular genre was able to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries, finding a dedicated and enthusiastic following in most European countries for over 200 years. After analyzing commedia dell'arte's original development in the Italian peninsula, examining the predominating Carnival ideology and the ability of the troupes to …

Nicotine Sensitization In Β-Arrestin 2 Knockout Adolescent Mice., Jennifer A. Correll Aug 2007

Nicotine Sensitization In Β-Arrestin 2 Knockout Adolescent Mice., Jennifer A. Correll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ß arrestin-2 is a protein involved in signaling of D2 receptors and plays a mediating role in sensitization to psychostimulants and the opiate morphine. In this study, 3-4 week old BA-2 KO and wild type C57/B6 mice received nicotine tartarate (s.c, 0.5 mg/kg free base) for 7 or 14 consecutive days followed by a drug-free period. An acute nicotine challenge followed the drugfree period. Results indicated that the absence of ß-arrestin-2 reduced sensitization to nicotine in Experiment 1. BA-2 KOs eventually demonstrated sensitization in Experiment 2. However, absence of ß-arrestin-2 blocked expression of sensitization on the challenge. After the challenge, …

The Arab Quest For Modernity: Universal Impulses Vs. State Development., Kevin Wampler Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Arab Middle East began indigenous nation building relatively late in the twentieth century. Issues of legitimacy, identity, and conflicts with the West have plagued Arab nations. Arab states have espoused universal ideologies as solutions to the problems of Arab nation building.

The two ideologies of Pan-Arabism and Islamic modernism provided universal solutions to the Arab states. Both Pan-Arabism and Islamic modernism gained validity in political polemics aimed against colonialism, imperialism, Zionism, and the West. Both ideologies promised simple solutions to complex questions of building modern Arab society. Irrespective of ideology, Arab states have always acted in self-interest to perceived …

Fast-Food Government And Physician-Assisted Death: The Role Of Direct Democracy In Federalism, K.K. Duvivier Aug 2007

Fast-Food Government And Physician-Assisted Death: The Role Of Direct Democracy In Federalism, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Modern patients often enter a twilight zone of suspended animation between living and dying that did not exist a generation ago. The majority of Americans believe these terminal patients should have the right to refuse life support and to receive pain relief, even to the point of hastening death. Yet laws addressing the situation are unclear, and physician advocates, like Dr. Kevorkian of Michigan, have faced sanctions and jail time when they responded to patient requests for help to die peacefully. In its 2006 Gonzales v. Oregon decision, the U.S. Supreme Court shifted the physician-assisted death dilemma to the state-side …

Authentic Out-Of-Class Communication In Study Abroad Programs: Success Defined By Continued Motivation And Cultural Appreciation, Erin Fairlight Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

The benefits of study abroad experience in second language acquisition have evolved from unchallenged assumption to the focus of rigorous study in the past several decades. The benefits of out-of-class contact with natives have likewise been questioned. Despite conflicting evidence of its benefit, students frequently cite out-of-class conversations with natives as among the most beneficial aspects of their language acquisition experience. Reviewing the extant literature, this study narrows in on authentic communication-that is, meaningful out-of-class contact with natives, in which students are able to genuinely express themselves and their personality-as a previously unanalyzed element of study abroad research. It is …

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communication, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals--all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English--were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form--most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Evangelical information professionals could play a significant role in helping to make additional evangelical journal content available electronically.

Asperger's Syndrome And Metamemory:How Well Can One Child Predict His Knowledge Of The World Around Him?, Jacqueline Brooks Bell

Theses and Dissertations

We investigated whether a child with Asperger?s Syndrome would demonstrate deficits in awareness of cognitive processing similar to those demonstrated for awareness of social interactions. The cognitive processes examined were memory and metamemory, or knowing about knowing. With regard to procedural metamemory, the child was unable to accurately predict his own memory, particularly which items he would not be able to recall. Declarative metamemory also was impaired. Tasks requiring imitation of the researcher or that were largely nonverbal resulted in particularly poor performance. The findings indicate that the child?s social deficits related to Asperger?s Syndrome extended to the cognitive domain. …

Optimizing The Use Of Public Transit System In No-Notice Evacuations In Urban Areas, Fatemeh Sayyady

Theses and Dissertations

Natural or man-made disasters result in unfortunate events around the nation every year. Such extreme events necessitate the short-notice or no-notice evacuation of a large population from the stricken area. This research presents an optimization modeling technique to develop an evacuation plan for transit-dependent residents during no-notice disaster situation. The proposed plan relies on the application of existing public transit system of an urban area. The public transit routing plan (PTRP) problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program. The PTRP identifies the optimal routes for transit vehicles to move evacuees from the danger zone to designated safe destinations. …

Egocentric Depth Perception In Optical See-Through Augmented Reality, James Adam Jones Aug 2007

Egocentric Depth Perception In Optical See-Through Augmented Reality, James Adam Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Augmented Reality (AR) is a method of mixing computer-generated graphics with real-world environments. In AR, observers retain the ability to see their physical surroundings while additional (augmented) information is depicted as simulated graphical objects matched to the real-world view. In the following experiments, optical see-through head-mounted displays (HMDs) were used to present observers with both Augmented and Virtual Reality environments. Observers were presented with varied real, virtual, and combined stimuli with and without the addition of motion parallax. The apparent locations of the stimuli were then measured using quantitative methods of egocentric depth judgment. The data collected from these experiments …
