The Glass Ceiling: An Analysis Of Women In Administrative Capacities In Public Universities In The Deep South, Judy Alsobrooks Meredith

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the barriers that have hindered women?s ability to acquire top administrative positions in higher education in the Deep South. Previous studies document the fact that while more women are attending college nationally, far fewer women attain upper level administrative positions at their universities than do men. Sexism and family/work conflicts are known hindrances in women?s ability to assume key leadership roles in higher education. This research examines women?s perceptions of such obstacles in achieving top administrative positions at public universities in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Women administrators and women who are full and associate …

The Implementation Of Drug Court Progams In Selected States: An Examination Of Government Influence, Lisa Ann Nored Aug 2007

The Implementation Of Drug Court Progams In Selected States: An Examination Of Government Influence, Lisa Ann Nored

Theses and Dissertations

With the merger of judicial supervision and mandated treatment, drug courts have given rise to therapeutic jurisprudence and attempt to address those issues which have plagued corrections policymakers for several decades. The evaluation literature indicates that drug courts tend to produce lower recidivism rates, increased retention rates and lower costs when compared to traditional programs. However, as drug courts approach their second decade, there is a void in the literature regarding the implementation of drug court programs. This study specifically examined those factors which either facilitate or challenge the implementation of drug court programs. This study examined implementation issues from …

Sexual Harassment Of Women In The United States Military: Juror Decisions Of Reserve Officer Training Corps (Rotc) And Civilian College Students, Catherine Michelle Snell Aug 2007

Sexual Harassment Of Women In The United States Military: Juror Decisions Of Reserve Officer Training Corps (Rotc) And Civilian College Students, Catherine Michelle Snell

Theses and Dissertations

The present research examined the influence of military status, organizational climate type, gender, and attitudes toward sexual harassment on juror decisions in a sexual harassment trial. Military participants rated themselves as having more stereotypical masculine characteristics and they rated sexual harassment allegations more seriously. The permissive climate type elicited less serious allegation ratings. Females rated all climates as more permissive, found the defendant more liable, and chose more severe punishments. Tolerant attitudes toward sexual harassment predicted juror decisions for both ROTC and civilian mock jurors. The results highlight the need for further education about sexual harassment to reduce tolerant attitudes …

A Proposed Character Animation Workflow For Digital Production Arts With Preparation For Cloth Dynamics, Kent Chan Aug 2007

A Proposed Character Animation Workflow For Digital Production Arts With Preparation For Cloth Dynamics, Kent Chan

All Theses

In a fast-paced production studio, procedures and standard operating practices have been created to ensure maximum use of resources, while being flexible enough to account for problems that might arise. For the animation section of the pipeline, it is imperative to produce animation in a timely manner so that the other sections of the pipeline that are dependent on animation can begin at an appropriate time. Using 'Mileena Malign' and 'SpaceCat' as case studies, a possible workflow for computer animation--specifically as it pertains to preparation for cloth dynamics--is developed, with highlights on the advantages and challenges encountered. This thesis presents …

Standardized Power: A Rhetoric Of Performance Evaluation In Education, Michael Hedges Aug 2007

Standardized Power: A Rhetoric Of Performance Evaluation In Education, Michael Hedges

All Theses

South Carolina's public education system administrators and teachers need to know more about how the language used in written performance evaluations impacts the effectiveness of evaluation feedback in order to help improve the state's system for Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching (ADEPT). One key to understanding this knowledge is identifying the characteristics of the language used in evaluation feedback. This study examines the rhetorical situation of written performance evaluations from a theoretical standpoint and used a survey to assess several characteristics of the language used in evaluation feedback (word usage, content inclusion, and the structural order of sentences). Results, …

Cross-Modal Effects On Learning: A Seismic Stimulus Improves Color Discrimination Learning In A Jumping Spider, Nicole D. Vandersal, Eileen Hebets Aug 2007

Cross-Modal Effects On Learning: A Seismic Stimulus Improves Color Discrimination Learning In A Jumping Spider, Nicole D. Vandersal, Eileen Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

The production of multimodal signals during animal displays is extremely common, and the function of such complex signaling has received much attention. Currently, the most frequently explored hypotheses regarding the evolution and function of complex signaling focus on the signal and/or signaler, or the signaling environment, while much less attention has been placed on the receivers. However, recent studies using vertebrates suggest that receiver psychology (e.g. learning and memory) may play a large role in the evolution of complex signaling. To date, the influence of multimodal cues on receiver learning and/or memory has not been studied in invertebrates. Here, we …

Sports And Youth Development Programs: Theoretical And Practical Implication Of Early Adolescent Participation In Multiple Instances Of Structured Out-Of-School (Ost) Activity, Nicole Zarrett, Jack Peltz, Kristen Fay, Yibing Li Aug 2007

Sports And Youth Development Programs: Theoretical And Practical Implication Of Early Adolescent Participation In Multiple Instances Of Structured Out-Of-School (Ost) Activity, Nicole Zarrett, Jack Peltz, Kristen Fay, Yibing Li

Journal of Youth Development

Among today’s youth, the most ubiquitous OST activity is sports. However, many of these youth are also participating in at least one other OST activity along with their participation in sports. Using longitudinal data from 1,622 youth (56.8% female) from the first three waves (Grades 5, 6, and 7) of the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD), we employed a pattern-centered approach to assess differences in adolescent functioning depending on what types of OST activities youth were participating in along with their sports participation. Our findings suggest that youth benefit from their sports participation differently depending on what other …

Applying Logic Modeling To The Higher Education Accreditation Process, Kenneth Frank Bolden Aug 2007

Applying Logic Modeling To The Higher Education Accreditation Process, Kenneth Frank Bolden

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, regional accreditation and the regional accreditation associations for higher education have experienced continuing criticism and become the objects of increased scrutiny. Higher education institutions look to the accreditation process as one of the principal means of justifying their actions and activities relative to their performance and results. Since the complaints and criticism directed toward higher education have not diminished but continued, and even increased, the regional accreditation associations find themselves to be the focus of similar complaints and criticisms. In the United States, we have no national system of accreditation. We rely on the actions and activities …

Developmental Pathways To Conduct Problems, Danielle Dandreaux Aug 2007

Developmental Pathways To Conduct Problems, Danielle Dandreaux

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study tests the predictions made by several causal theories proposing different etiologies for childhood-onset and adolescent-onset conduct problems. It investigates a variety of causal factors proven to be important for the development of antisocial behaviors, specifically neuropsychological/cognitive deficits, temperamental vulnerabilities, dysfunctional parenting, deviant peers, and rebelliousness. Current theories generally agree that the early onset pathway is distinguished by interactions between a child with a difficult temperament and dysfunctional parent-child interactions. However, theories differ as to whether they emphasize the temperament and neurocognitive deficits of the child, or the parenting behaviors. In the adolescent onset pathway, theories typically focus on …

Gendered Representations Of Jazz Vocal Artists: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Cd And Performance Reviews, And Interviews, Miroslava Jichova Aug 2007

Gendered Representations Of Jazz Vocal Artists: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Cd And Performance Reviews, And Interviews, Miroslava Jichova

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study of contemporary jazz discourse and gender applies the techniques of critical discourse analysis, inspired by M.A.K. Halliday's systemic functional linguistics and Norman Fairclough's qualitative critical discourse analysis, to explicate the unequal distribution of power in society as represented by the institutions of jazz and mass media, in discourse about jazz vocal artists. Specifically, the study focuses on the way the genres of jazz CD review, jazz performance review, and interviews with jazz artists – disseminated via the institutions JazzTimes and Live New Orleans – represent the artists' identities, roles, achievements and skills. Following Norman Fairclough and the feminist …

Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell Aug 2007

Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to understand girls' involvement conduct problems, this dissertation first reviews two existing theoretical approaches that provide an explanation for the development of conduct problems. Specifically, the available literature on the development and correlates of conduct problems in boys suggests the subtypes of conduct disorder represent two developmental trajectories. The adolescent-onset pathway is associated with deviant peers and few characterological problems, where as the childhood-onset pathway is associated with emotion regulation deficits, negative parenting, callous and unemotional traits, and neurological deficits. Research also suggests a gender-specific model, the delayed-onset model, for the development of conduct problems in girls. …

Reducing The Rate Of Recidivism For First-Time Juvenile Offenders With The Parent Monitoring Program, Pmp: A Family Counseling Intervention Program, Rhonda C. Vappie-Aydin Aug 2007

Reducing The Rate Of Recidivism For First-Time Juvenile Offenders With The Parent Monitoring Program, Pmp: A Family Counseling Intervention Program, Rhonda C. Vappie-Aydin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of a family counseling intervention program called the Parent Monitoring Program (PMP) on reducing the rate of recidivism with first-time juvenile offenders in New Orleans, Louisiana. The PMP is a multimodal treatment intervention that combines individual, family, and group, counseling services to juvenile offenders and their families. Pugh, Force, Rault, and Triche (2000) reported that with effective and innovative family and community based intervention programs, juvenile offenders can be deterred from further delinquent behaviors. There is a great need for research studies to examine effective interventions that address reducing the rate of recidivism with juvenile …
