Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin Aug 2007

Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin

Theses and Dissertations

Rasch is a mathematical model that allows researchers to compare data that measure a unidimensional trait or ability (Bond & Fox, 2007). When data fit the Rasch model, it is mathematically proven that the item difficulty estimates are independent of the sample of respondents. The purpose of this study was to test the robustness of the Rasch model with regards to its ability to maintain invariant item difficulty estimates when real (data that does not perfectly fit the Rasch model), polytomous scored data is used. The data used in this study comes from a university alumni questionnaire that was collected …

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen Aug 2007

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

A large body of evidence suggests interpersonal environments of women with postpartum depression are impaired. However, it is unclear whether postpartum anxiety is associated with similar psychosocial impairment, particularly relating to parental and relationship functioning. Many studies examining postpartum anxiety have been cross-sectional in nature rendering it difficult to make long-term predictions about functioning of anxious mothers and their families. The present study was one of few longitudinal studies examining the relation between postpartum anxiety and long-term psychosocial functioning. Mothers reporting significant anxiety (n = 20) and mothers denying significant anxiety and depression (i.e., control mothers; n = 35) at …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit Aug 2007

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit

Theses and Dissertations

To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Principals' Leadership Styles And School Climate As Perceived By Elementary Teachers In Four North Dakota Public School Districts, Mary Vollmuth Koopman

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which leadership style made a difference in school climate, if a relationship could be established, and if there was a difference in the teachers' perceptions based on the teacher's age, years with the current principal, and the number of principals for which a teacher has worked. Teachers responded to three survey instruments: the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ, the Organizational Climate Descriptive Questionnaire (OCDQ, and a demographic questionnaire. A total of 849 surveys were distributed in 49 elementary schools. Two hundred sixty-six teachers participated in the study. Teachers who …

Teaching Educators Functional Assessment Procedures, Hanna C. Rue Aug 2007

Teaching Educators Functional Assessment Procedures, Hanna C. Rue

Theses and Dissertations

Functional behavioral assessment is a set of data collection techniques utilized to identify the environmental variables maintaining a maladaptive behavior. The current study evaluated a training protocol in which educators learned to use direct methods of functional behavioral assessment. Educators recorded A-B-C (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data, developed hypotheses regarding the function of the behavior, calculated conditional probabilities, and identified functional interventions. Participant's accurate recording of A-B-C data and accurate analysis of the data served as the dependent measure. Ten teachers from a private school participated in the study. A multiple-baseline design across groups of participants provided assessment of skill acquisition during baseline …

Cognitive Styles In Student Use, Perception, And Satisfaction With Online Learning, Glenn E. Cockerline Aug 2007

Cognitive Styles In Student Use, Perception, And Satisfaction With Online Learning, Glenn E. Cockerline

Theses and Dissertations

The current trend toward online learning significantly changes the paradigm for teaching and learning. While instructors structure and sequence how they teach in a traditional face-to-face classroom, the very nature of online learning shifts the locus of control from the instructor to the learner, as the student picks and chooses how and when they access the course, what aspects they dwell on, and for how long. As a result, a need exists to investigate how different students respond to the online interface. This study conducted at a small Canadian mid-western university was designed to investigate whether a relationship existed between …

Further questions dealt with student grouping according to race, gender, academic ability and age as well as other factors that may …

Volunteerism And Marital Quality Among Lds Senior Missionary Couples, Megan Oka Aug 2007

Volunteerism And Marital Quality Among Lds Senior Missionary Couples, Megan Oka

Theses and Dissertations

Although research has been conducted on marriage and volunteerism in later life, little is known about the impact of volunteerism on marital quality, particularly intense volunteer experiences. Missionary couples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) leave their homes for a period ranging from 6-18 months and dedicate the majority of their time to working in church assignments. Qualitative interviews were collected from couples who had served senior couples missions for the LDS Church and returned home in the last year. The mean age of participants was 69, and the mean length of marriage for couples was …

Property, Rules, And Property Rules, Emily Sherwin Aug 2007

Property, Rules, And Property Rules, Emily Sherwin

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

This essay examines two aspects of “property rules” in the sense defined by Judge Guido Calabresi and Douglas Melamed. In each case, the form in which property rules are cast is critically important.

The first question addressed is the capacity of property rules to affect behavior prior to and outside litigation. Most economic analysis of property rules and liability rules assumes that the choice between them will guide decisionmaking at the time of a contemplated rights violation, and possibly prior to that time. To have this effect, property rules (and liability rules) must be established by determinate legal rules that …

Optimizing The Small Satellite Platform For Compelling Technology Demonstrations: Bandit/Akoya Proximity Operations And Rapid Integration, Erin Beck Aug 2007

Optimizing The Small Satellite Platform For Compelling Technology Demonstrations: Bandit/Akoya Proximity Operations And Rapid Integration, Erin Beck

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites have the potential to advance space technology at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional large-scale spacecraft. Unfortunately, due to the volume constraint of miniaturized satellites, microscale spacecraft often lack the payload and bus space to support complex missions. Bandit/Akoya utilizes distributed design with a plug-and-play platform to perform proximity operations and rapid integration of two microscale vehicles and a host - all under 35 kg. Students are directly responsible for all program elements.

Optimization Of Perforated Doublelayer Absorbers Using Simulated Annealing, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang, Long-Jyi Yeh, Tian-Syung Lan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

As noise is highly responsible for the psychological and physiological ills to workers, the noise control for enclosed manufacturing system with sound absorber becomes obligatory; besides, considering the maintenance and operation in a room, the minimal thickness of sound absorber is certainly requested, according. To meet these issues, the compromising design target, ratio of sound absorption coefficient to thickness of acoustic panel, is thus proposed and applied as a researched objective, accordingly. In this paper, the simulated annealing (SA) is utilized in the shape optimization of the double-layer sound absorption system. The paper tackles not only the theoretical derivation in …
