Information Sharing And Supply Chain Performance: The Role Of Connectivity And Willingness, Stanley E. Fawcett, Paul Osterhaus, Gregory M. Magnan, James C. Brau, Matthew W. Mccarter

Faculty Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how information technology (IT) is used to enhance supply chain performance.

Design/methodology/approach – A large-scale survey and semi-structured interviews were used to collect industry data.

Findings – Two distinct dimensions to information sharing – connectivity and willingness – are identified and analyzed. Both dimensions are found to impact operational performance and to be critical to the development of a real information sharing capability. However, many companies are found to have placed most of their emphasis on connectivity, often overlooking the willingness construct. As a result, information sharing seldom delivers on …

Individual Moral Development And Ethical Climate: The Influence Of Person-Organization Fit On Job Attitudes, Maureen L. Ambrose, Anke Arnaud, Marshall Schminke

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

This research examines how the fit between employees’ moral development and the ethical work climate of their organization affects employee attitudes. Person–organization fit was assessed by matching individuals’ level of cognitive moral development with the ethical climate of their organization. The influence of P–O fit on employee attitudes was assessed using a sample of 304 individuals from 73 organizations. In general, the findings support our predictions that fit between personal and organizational ethics is related to higher levels of commitment and job satisfaction and lower levels of turnover intent. Ethical P–O fit was related to higher levels of affective commitment …

Using A Tuning Protocol: A Journey Of Creating And Sustaining Professional Conversations Among Teacher Educators, Foster Walsh Jan 2007

Using A Tuning Protocol: A Journey Of Creating And Sustaining Professional Conversations Among Teacher Educators, Foster Walsh

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article reports on the challenges of creating and sustaining on-going conversations about faculty teaching practices encountered by one Department of Teacher Education. The research indicates that higher education is experimenting with many forms of collegial discourse, yet remains instructionally isolated. This three-year journey includes gathering faculty support for increased talk about teaching, overcoming time constraints to meet together and experimenting with two discourse formats to increase conversation. A non-evaluative peer observation process was found to be helpful but not sustainable. Using a modified turning protocol produced three benefits: 1) kept the group on task, 2) stimulated collective inquiry, and …

Utilization Of Evidence Based Practice Principles To Implement Organizational Values, Catherine Z. Curtis Jan 2007

Utilization Of Evidence Based Practice Principles To Implement Organizational Values, Catherine Z. Curtis

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nursing job satisfaction is related to nursing retention. During this current nursing shortage, nursing leaders need to investigate ways to improve work environments to increase nurse satisfaction. Research has shown nurse job satisfaction greatly impacts the quality of patient care and nurse retention. This research project implemented a nursing model of practice that included organizational values that could be linked to improved job satisfaction. A nursing model derived from The Whole-Person Caring Model (Thornton) and using principles of Shared Governance, Empowerment and Crucial Communication was the independent variable used to measure changes in nurses' perceptions of work environment and job …

Evolutionary Systems Theory, Universities, And Endogenous Regional Economic Development, William M. Bowen Jan 2007

Evolutionary Systems Theory, Universities, And Endogenous Regional Economic Development, William M. Bowen

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Universities today are increasingly being viewed in terms of serving the purpose of economic development. This paper postulates that their chief purpose is to advance knowledge and that in doing so they effectuate regional economic growth and development through processes specified in the endogenous economic growth model. To achieve this purpose and to contribute optimally to regional economic growth and development arguably requires coherent educational policies. The central proposition is that to formulate coherent educational policies for endogenous regional economic development requires placement of a theory of the advancement of knowledge at the center of related policy deliberations. An evolutionary …

Change, Principal Trust And Enabling School Structures: An Analysis Of Relationships In Southern Alberta Schools, Cheryl Anne Gilmore Jan 2007

Change, Principal Trust And Enabling School Structures: An Analysis Of Relationships In Southern Alberta Schools, Cheryl Anne Gilmore

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Improved student learning continues to be a pressing issue compelling schools and districts to undergo change. Schools are complex organizations and there are a number of interrelated factors that contribute to the success or failure of change into a new model. In Alberta, organizational change was mandated in 2003 through government acceptance of a Commission’s recommendation that all schools operate as a professional learning community. The context of mandated change provided a unique opportunity to examine large scale change with factors that may have a relationship to successful change. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship …

Ownership And Wages: Estimating Public-Private And Foreign-Domestic Differentials With Leed From Hungary, 1986-2003, John S. Earle, Álmos Telegdy Jan 2007

Ownership And Wages: Estimating Public-Private And Foreign-Domestic Differentials With Leed From Hungary, 1986-2003, John S. Earle, Álmos Telegdy

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

How do state, domestic, private, and foreign ownership of firms differ in average wages? We address these questions using linked employer-employee panel data containing 1.35mln worker-year observations for 21,238 firms from 1986 to 2003 in Hungary. Our econometric methods exploit the long panel together with the presence of 3,700 switches of ownership type in the postsocialist Hungarian transition to estimate these wage differentials.

The International Protean Career: Four Women’S Narratives, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir Jan 2007

The International Protean Career: Four Women’S Narratives, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir

Articles

In this paper, we share individual narratives outlining the experiences of four well-educated western women following a permanent international career in the South of France. By virtue of detailed interview transcripts and contextual information regarding the specificity of the location in question, a comprehensive picture of the experiences and choices of individual women in leadership business positions on an international level is painted. Our aim is not to generalise the findings to a wider population, but to gain an insight into the depth and complexity of career issues for women in general, and particularly for women working in a foreign …

Grasping Smoke: Enforcing The Ban On Political Activity By Charities, Lloyd Histoshi Mayer Jan 2007

Grasping Smoke: Enforcing The Ban On Political Activity By Charities, Lloyd Histoshi Mayer

Journal Articles

The rule that charities are not allowed to intervene in political campaigns has now been in place for over fifty years. Despite uncertainty about the exact reasons for Congress' enactment of it, skepticism by some about its validity for both constitutional and public policy reasons, and continued confusion about its exact parameters, this rule has survived virtually unchanged for all of those years. Yet while overall noncompliance with the income tax laws has drawn significant scholarly attention, few scholars have focused on violations of this prohibition and the IRS' attempts to enforce it.

Library / It Mergers In Ohio's Public Two-Year Colleges: An Exploratory Study, Douglas Kaylor

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Ohio's public two-year community colleges were surveyed to determine how many have merged their libraries and information technology operations. A merger scale developed by Bolin was used as a measure of degree of merger. Results of telephone interviews with librarians at fifteen institutions showed that less than 25% of the subject colleges had some form of merged operation. This figure was similar to reports in the literature. Those Ohio colleges reporting merged operations were all large or very large institutions. This finding did not fit with the literature, which associated merged operations with small institutions. Librarians were also asked about …

Radical Change Accidentally: The Emergence And Amplification Of Small Change, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Lakami T. Baker, Tammy E. Beck, Mukta Kulkarni, Stephanie Thomas Solansky, Deandra Villarreal Travis

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

A decision to offer breakfast to homeless people led to radical change in a church and its environment. Existing theories of change do not fully explain observations from our qualitative study; however, complexity theory constructs suggest how and why such change emerged. We offer four key findings. First, the radical change was unintended, emergent, and slow. Second, destabilizing conditions helped small changes to emerge and become radical. Third, subsequent actions amplified an initial small change and, though not intended to do so, promoted radical change. Finally, the dynamic interaction of amplifying actions, contextual conditions, and small changes led to continuous …

Evaluation Of Epa’S “Colleges And Universities Sector Program” At Three Universities In New York State, Magaly Montenegro Martinez

Theses

The topic to be investigated in this thesis is the impact of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Colleges and Universities Sector Program on three universities located in New York State. The parameters to be analyzed are the changes in the way environmental issues have been approached using tools and incentives provided by the EPA Colleges and Universities Sector Program, drivers that motivate the colleges to achieve environmental management through compliance with environmental laws and regulations, and obstacles that stand in the way of compliance. This research is based primarily on a survey conducted in three universities participating …

Planting The Seeds: The Experiences Of Community Psychology Graduates As Agents Of Systemic Social Change, Peggy Ann Weston Jan 2007

Planting The Seeds: The Experiences Of Community Psychology Graduates As Agents Of Systemic Social Change, Peggy Ann Weston

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Social change is a part of human existence, but other than charismatic individuals such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi, little has been published about the lived experience of social change agents. Time (era, passage of time, etc.) is often neglected as an important temporal factor of analysis in systemic social change (SSC) activities. The intent is to explore the experience of people working as SSC agents and discover what influences their work. A better understanding of this experience would contribute to more effective SSC work and perhaps address challenges facing change agents. The main research question, “What …

Is Support For Top Managers' Dynamic Capabilities, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Michael J. Zhang

WCBT Faculty Publications

Despite a continual interest in developing information systems (IS) to support the work of top managers, assessing the impact of IS support for top managers and their capabilities on the bottom-line performance of firms has received little attention in existing literature. Drawing upon the resource based view of competitive advantage, this paper argues that firms that provide IS support for their top managers’ dynamic capabilities may enjoy competitive advantage and superior firm performance. The performance impact of IS support for two key dynamic capabilities of top managers (fast response and mental model building) under different (dynamic vs. stable) external environments …

Conflict Resolution And Systemic Change, Susan Sturm, Howard Gadlin Jan 2007

Conflict Resolution And Systemic Change, Susan Sturm, Howard Gadlin

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article suggests that the view of public norm elaboration and accountability underlying the critique of ADR is too narrow and needs to be rethought. Public norms do not consist only of the precedents developed and applied by courts or other adjudicative bodies. They also emerge when relevant institutional actors develop values or remedies through an accountable process of principled and participatory decision making, and then adapt these values and remedies to broader groups or situations. ADR can play a significant role in developing legitimate and effective solutions to common problems and, in the process, produce generalizable norms

Katrina And The Federal Emergency Management Agency: A Case Study In Organizational Failure, Elaine Van Patten Jan 2007

Katrina And The Federal Emergency Management Agency: A Case Study In Organizational Failure, Elaine Van Patten

Theses

The risk of increasingly devastating natural disasters and the continuous threats of terrorism drive the nation's demand for swift and effective national emergency planning and response. Hurricane Katrina struck and devastated parts of the Gulf Region as a Category 4 hurricane in August 2005. After landfall in New Orleans, opportunities to maintain sanitation and hygiene quickly disappeared as flood water became contaminated, evacuees were stranded and forced to sleep next to dead bodies and human waste, survive without food or water and hope to be rescued. Survivors were convinced that they were abandoned by the federal government and left to …
