What Are They Thinking About R&D? A Strategic Core Competence, Or An Operational Business Decision?, Beth Fitz Gibbon
What Are They Thinking About R&D? A Strategic Core Competence, Or An Operational Business Decision?, Beth Fitz Gibbon
Student Scholarship
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nineteen senior North American business practitioners in multinational corporations to understand their experiences with strategic planning and resource allocation for R&D. In particular, we sought to elicit insight about where planning and allocation overlap, and how they are executed today, vs. five to ten years ago. Findings indicate the outsourcing of R&D is rapidly increasing. R&D is becoming an operational business function as opposed to an internal investment in key knowledge for future firm sustainability. R&D also appears to no longer be a major focus of the strategic planning effort at the highest management levels. …
Management By Values: The New Philosophy Of The Contemporary Economic System, Saad Ali Al-Anzi
Management By Values: The New Philosophy Of The Contemporary Economic System, Saad Ali Al-Anzi
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This intellectual paper addresses the philosophy of the new management paradigm and its applications through "Management by Values" (MBV), an approach rooted in the current needs of the organizational environment. Drawing on the research and practical expertise of Dolan and Michley (2006), the paper examines the Tri-axial Values Model, which encompasses three dimensions: Economic-Pragmatic, Ethical, and Emotional-Developmental. This paper aims to identify the drivers behind the adoption of this model, noting that while values were once dismissed by managers as "too soft" for serious management consideration, they have now become a central pillar of contemporary management trends (Dolan & Garcia, …

Fifteen leaders from three Georgia high schools were interviewed to examine their roles in improving student achievement. Research protocol questions guided the interview to capture the essence of the work of leaders. Each participant answered seven questions derived from the review of literature to identify the leaders behavior that improved student achievement. The qualitative, phenomenological …
Lessons From A Rural Georgia School On Developing Successful Professional Learning Communities, Roderick Donnel Sams
Lessons From A Rural Georgia School On Developing Successful Professional Learning Communities, Roderick Donnel Sams
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The literature on educational leadership and school change recognizes clearly the influence of the principal on whether or not change will occur in the school. It seems clear that transforming the school organization into a professional learning community can be done only with the sanction of the principal and active nurturing of the professional development of the staff in order to progress as a learning community. Thus, a look at the elementary principal of a school whose staff is a professional learning community seems a good starting point for describing what these learning communities look like and how they operate …

Evaluative Inquiry: The Road To A Learning Organization, Antonia Pérez Bolívar
Capstone Collection
This study looks at the effects of evaluative inquiry as a tool for organizational development in the “Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural”(CELEI), a small educational institution. The study is framed as an action research and its purpose is to initiate a process of organizational change that will consolidate the newly established institution and to introduce learning as a built-in organizational strategy. The study is structured as a meta-research on the evaluative inquiry intervention. The intervention was a cooperative effort carried out by an in-house evaluation team and the participation of all staff members. As Action Research, the evaluation process …

Diversity Or Identity Crisis? An Examination Of Leading Is Journals, Anteneh Ayanso, Kaveepan Lertwachara, Francine Vachon
Management, HR and Information Systems
Since its founding in the 1960s, the Information Systems (IS) field has been involved in critical debates about the nature and future of the discipline. Many researchers feel that diversity in IS research is our strength; others fear that too much diversity leads to losing the field’s core identity. Do the scholarly contributions of the IS community reveal either of these two phenomena? In order to address this question, we examine articles published in leading IS journals (MISQ, ISR, and JMIS) during the period of 2000 to 2006. Our analysis includes classifying the articles using a …

Implementing Elements Of Evidence-Based Practice Into Scientist–Practitioner Training At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln, David K. Dilillo, Dennis E. Mcchargue
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Evidence-based practice (EBP) has become the predominant model of training and is emerging as a common model of practice for many nonpsychology health care professions. Recognizing the relevance of EBP to psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA) developed and endorsed an official policy statement on EBP for the practice of professional psychology. There is now a pressing need to consider ways that EBP can inform scientist–practitioner training. The present article proposes clinical competencies associated with the practice of EBP, and describes initial efforts to implement elements of EBP into training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. These efforts have occurred in …

Over the past three years, executives at General Electric (GE) have taught administrators at Sacred Heart University, located in Fairfield, CT, how to use the workout technique to identify and improve inefficient institutional processes and practices. This article will explain how Sacred Heart implemented the workout process, with a particular emphasis on factors contributing to successful workouts and the issues nonprofits encounter. GE has credited the workout with both improving processes and empowering the workforce. The workout, which has led to accelerated change and enhanced Six Sigma efforts, begins with identifying a problem. Many at GE note that the workout …
The Promise Of A Managerial Values Approach To Corporate Philanthropy, Jaepil Choi, Heli Wang
The Promise Of A Managerial Values Approach To Corporate Philanthropy, Jaepil Choi, Heli Wang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This article presents an alternative rationale for corporate philanthropy based on managerial values of benevolence and integrity. On the one hand, top managers with benevolence and integrity values are more likely to spread their intrinsic concern for others into the wider society in the form of corporate philanthropy. On the other hand, top managers high in benevolence and integrity are likely to contribute to improved managerial credibility and trusting firm-stakeholder relationships, thereby improving corporate financial performance. Therefore, the article makes the argument that both corporate philanthropy and corporate financial performance can better be interpreted as resulting from managers’ benevolence and …

Success Factors Of Women Who Have Achieved Positions Of Command In Law Enforcement, Karin Montejo
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Women in law enforcement have increased their numbers in entry level and mid-management positions during the past 25 years. However, they have not found parity with their male counterparts in attaining positions of top command and are still notably under-represented. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey of women in law enforcement who have attained at least one supervisory rank. The study participants provided responses to a series of questions identifying their investment in human capital, and whether it impacted their promotional opportunities. Human capital theory addresses individual investment in targeted areas of types of assignments, training, education …

Reframing School Dropout As A Public Health Issue, Nicholas Freudenberg, Jessica Ruglis
Reframing School Dropout As A Public Health Issue, Nicholas Freudenberg, Jessica Ruglis
Publications and Research
Good education predicts good health, and disparities in health and in educational achievement are closely linked. Despite these connections, public health professionals rarely make reducing the number of students who drop out of school a priority, although nearly one-third of all students in the United States and half of black, Latino, and American Indian students do not graduate from high school on time. In this article, we summarize knowledge on the health benefits of high school graduation and discuss the pathways by which graduating from high school contributes to good health. We examine strategies for reducing school dropout rates with …

Organizational Support For Sexual Minority Adolescents: Effects Of Level Of Youth Involvement And Diversity Training, Christine R. Regan, Marilyn Swisher, Rosemary V. Barnett
Journal of Youth Development
A two-phase, cross-section and case study design examined the level of youth involvement in the decision-making processes of youth-serving organizations and the effects of diversity training on organizational support for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) adolescents. Results indicate the organizations studied differed with respect to levels of youth involvement, but did not significantly differ with respect to the outcome variable. In-depth analysis to open-response questions indicated organizational support is extremely varied and organizations do support diversity, but not necessarily in regard to LGBT adolescents. The LGBT content within diversity training programs is also discussed. Finally, some religious ideas or …

Cultivating Compassion And Youth Action Around The Globe: A Preliminary Report On Jane Goodall’S Roots & Shoots Program, Laura R. Johnson, Julie S. Johnson-Pynn
Journal of Youth Development
This paper describes a unique service-learning based environmental and humanitarian program for youth, The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program (R&S). R&S aims to foster learning, personal growth and civic engagement among youth members through service activities and environmental education. Despite its promise as a youth development program and its rapid expansion into 100 countries, little is known about R&S’s impact on youth development. In this study, we explore R&S programs in China and Tanzania, two countries that are maximally different from the U.S. in important cultural and contextual factors. Through qualitative and quantitative methods we describe the programs, …

Research staff at the Muskie School of Public Service, USM were requested to evaluate the effectiveness of the revised HCBS waiver application process from the perspective of states. This report summarizes the purpose, scope, approach and findings of the evaluation. The evaluation was designed to provide qualitative information on states' experience using the new HCBS waiver application for initial and renewal waiver applications. The evaluation examined four major issues:
Clarity/Consistency
: Are the waiver application components (Application, Technical Guide, Review Criteria) clearly understood and do they promote consistent interpretation?
Relevancy/Adequacy

Patterns Of District Performance In Student Achievement: Connecting Resources To Student Achievement, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite
Patterns Of District Performance In Student Achievement: Connecting Resources To Student Achievement, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite
School Finance and Student Achievement
This presentation is the first sequence of a three-phase study using a mixed method sequential explanatory strategy (Creswell, 2003). The study is research in-progress that investigates how resources can increase or diminish the value resources as they move through the education delivery system contributing in variations in its overall performance (Porter, 1985). The study is unique, because it combines, and is based on microeconomic and complex adaptive theories to examine resource utilization within school districts. This first sequence has two analytical goals and steps: (1) to verify the significant correlation, but with patterns of variability for district performance measured by …
