Health Care Reform And Family Caregivers, Edward F. Ansello Jan 2007

Health Care Reform And Family Caregivers, Edward F. Ansello

Director's Editorials from Age in Action

Health care reform is in the air. Family caregivers need recognition, reinforcement, and a reliable resource of assistance. They need for the Commonwealth to recognize that they are the bedrock of long-term care. Minimizing investment in family caregivers would short circuit any serious effort to improve the health status and care of older Virginians.

Meeting Basic Survival Needs Of The World's Least Healthy People: Toward A Framework Convention On Global Health, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2007

Meeting Basic Survival Needs Of The World's Least Healthy People: Toward A Framework Convention On Global Health, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Lectures and Appearances

This article searches for solutions to the most perplexing problems in global health - problems so important that they affect the fate of millions of people, with economic, political, and security ramifications for the world's population. There are a variety of solutions scholars propose to improve global health and close the yawning health gap between rich and poor: global health is in the national interests of the major State powers; States owe an ethical duty to act; or international legal norms require effective action. However, arguments based on national interest, ethics, or international law have logical weaknesses. The coincidence of …

Access To Health Information And Health Care Decision-Making Of Women In A Rural Appalachian Community, Tracy L. Legrow Jan 2007

Access To Health Information And Health Care Decision-Making Of Women In A Rural Appalachian Community, Tracy L. Legrow

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Access to health care is a challenge in rural communities. Higher rates of chronic illness and poor use of preventive health practices combine to increase mortality rates among residents of rural areas. The health status of residents of West Virginia is among the poorest in the United States. The current study utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methodology, including the use of surveys, participant observation and ethnographic interviews, to explore the health status, beliefs and social support of women in a rural Appalachian community. Seven major themes were identified relevant to women’s experiences with health care: Definitions of Health, Barriers and …

Aging Influences Multiple Indices Of Oxidative Stress In The Heart Of The Fischer 344/Nnia X Brown Norway/Binia Rat, Shinichi Asano Jan 2007

Aging Influences Multiple Indices Of Oxidative Stress In The Heart Of The Fischer 344/Nnia X Brown Norway/Binia Rat, Shinichi Asano

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Here we report the influence of aging on multiple markers of oxidativenitrosative stress in the heart of adult (6-month), aged (30-month) and very aged (36- month) Fischer 344/NNiaHSd X Brown Norway/BiNia (F344/NXBN) rats. Compared to 6 month old rat hearts, indices of oxidative (superoxide anion (–O2 ·), 4-hyrdoxy-2- nonenal (4-HNE)) and nitrosative (protein nitrotyrosylation) stress were 34.1 ± 28.1%, 186 ± 28.1% and 94 ± 5.8% higher, respectively, in 36-month hearts and these findings were highly correlated with increases in left ventricular wall thickness (r>0.669; r>0.710 and p<0.01, respectively). Regression analysis showed that increases in cardiac oxidative-nitrosative stress with aging were significantly correlated with changes in the expression and/or regulation of proteins involved in transcriptional (NF-κB) activities, signaling (mitogen activated protein kinases along with Src), apoptotic ( Bcl-2, Traf-2), and cellular stress (HSPs). These results suggest that the aging F344/NXBN heart may be highly suited for unraveling the molecular events that lead to age-associated alterations in cardiac oxidative stress.

Ecology And Morphological Comparison Between Rough Greensnakes (Opheodrys A. Aestivus) And Eastern Smooth Greensnakes (Opheodrys V. Vernalis) In West Virginia, Timothy Earl Baldwin Jan 2007

Ecology And Morphological Comparison Between Rough Greensnakes (Opheodrys A. Aestivus) And Eastern Smooth Greensnakes (Opheodrys V. Vernalis) In West Virginia, Timothy Earl Baldwin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Since 1971, documented Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys aestivus) occurrences in West Virginia have declined from approximately 100 to less than 20 occurrences in the last 10 years. In contrast to the decline of Rough Greensnakes in WV, Smooth Greensnake (O. vernalis) populations appear to be stable over the same period of time. Historic sites from the West Virginia Biological Survey were cross referenced with habitat descriptions in published literature to establish research locations. One hundred nineteen Rough and Smooth Greensnakes were measured for snout-vent length and total body length, and of these, 78 were measured in detail for external head morphology …

Perceptions Of Preceptor Training In The Dietetic Supervised Practice Experience, Mary Kathryn Gould Jan 2007

Perceptions Of Preceptor Training In The Dietetic Supervised Practice Experience, Mary Kathryn Gould

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Preceptors are critical in the education of dietetic students and over the years, interest in preceptor training has grown. As a result, the American Dietetic Association recently established a task force to develop and implement a Preceptor Training Certificate Program. There is, however, limited information with regard to formal preceptor training currently being offered by dietetic internships and the affect it may have on programs. Because of the lack of knowledge concerning this topic, a qualitative collective case study was conducted at three university-based dietetic internships with the intent of adding to the body of knowledge regarding formal preceptor training …

Lean And Obese Zucker Rats Exhibit Different Patterns Of P70s6kinase Regulation In The Tibialis Anterior Muscle In Response To High Force Muscle Contraction, Anjaiah Katta Jan 2007

Lean And Obese Zucker Rats Exhibit Different Patterns Of P70s6kinase Regulation In The Tibialis Anterior Muscle In Response To High Force Muscle Contraction, Anjaiah Katta

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Increased muscle loading results in phosphorylation of the 70 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p70s6k) signaling pathway and this event strongly correlates with degree of muscle adaptation following resistance exercise. Here, we compared the basal and contraction- induced phosphorylation of p70s6k, Akt and mTOR in tibialis anterior muscles of lean and obese Zucker rats. Immunoblotting demonstrated differences in level of basal p70S6k phosphorylation (Thr 389) in the normal and diabetic TA. HFES had an increase in p70S6k (Thr389) phosphorylation at 0-, 1- and 3-hr in lean TA and only at 3-hr in obese TA. mTOR (Ser 2448) Phosphorylation was elevated in …

There are few effective agents that safely remove excess iron from iron-overloaded individuals. Our goal was to evaluate the iron-removing effectiveness of acetaminophen given ip or orally in the gerbil iron-overload model. Male gerbils were divided into 5 groups: saline controls, iron-overloaded controls, iron-overloaded treated with ip acetaminophen, iron-overloaded treated with oral acetaminophen, and iron-overloaded treated with ipdeferoxamine. Iron dextran was injected iptwice/wk for 8 wk. Acetaminophen and deferoxamine treatments were given on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the same 8 wk and continued for 4 wk after completion of iron-overloading. Echocardiograms were performed after completion of the iron-overloading and …

The Law Of Unintended Consequences, Margaret Howard Jan 2007

The Law Of Unintended Consequences, Margaret Howard

Scholarly Articles

My purpose is to talk about the 2005 Amendments and how things are going with the new provisions. But where do you start, with a bad law? We could start with the enactment process, but that's old news now. And besides, you've already heard the line: "Some members of Congress could not be bought; for everyone else there was MasterCard." We could talk about the policy choices, and the 2005 Amendments clearly represent a shift in that respect--perhaps in the category of "seismic" or "cataclysmic."

Improving Pedagogy Through Brain Based Learning, Renee Yandow Jan 2007

Improving Pedagogy Through Brain Based Learning, Renee Yandow

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of brain functionality as it correlates to learning, in order to improve pedagogical practices. Research indicated a correlation between the two and an action research plan was developed replicating many of the strategies detailed in the literature review. The study took place over a two month period and findings were positive, but inconclusive. There was a reported increase in lesson planning focus, which enabled the educator to create student centered activities that were tailored to the sample; however, little variation in the learning style prohibited the educator to conclude whether …

The current financial and fuel crises threaten food security in poorer nations and among the poor in wealthier countries. Sustainable food production benefits communities and their food supply and can maintain farming systems in less developed agricultural regions. Many small farmers have long practiced organic agriculture, but face pressure to adopt green revolution farming, using chemicals and commercial seed. Some are resisting this, but lack the technology to apply organic methods on a larger scale. Cuba provides an instructive example of a nation that confronted a sudden food and fuel crisis by adopting organic agricultural technologies across production systems that …

The Effects Of Chronic Nitrogen Application On A Mature Tallgrass Prairie Restoration And Nitrogen Mobilization Into Above-Ground Biomass Of Andropogon Gerardii, Ann M. (O'Neill) Ebert Jan 2007

The Effects Of Chronic Nitrogen Application On A Mature Tallgrass Prairie Restoration And Nitrogen Mobilization Into Above-Ground Biomass Of Andropogon Gerardii, Ann M. (O'Neill) Ebert

Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses

The Upland Prairie Restoration was initiated on a 25-acre old field in 1993 in Upland, Indiana. It has matured into a community dominated by Andropogon gerardii and forbs, Monarda fistulosa and Ratibida pinnata. Prior research on the site found that acute nitrogen enrichment promoted weed cover in early stages of establishment and inhibited the establishment of native prairie species. This current study examined the effects of nitrogen enrichment applied to a mature prairie restoration. In 2002, a complete randomized block design experiment was implemented with annual enrichment using nitrogen-urea fertilizer at 4 levels – 0g/m2, 5g/m2, 10g/m2, and 20g/m2. …

Health Care Financing Reform : A Socio-Economic Perspective, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper reviews some of the recent literature and experiences in healthcare reform in the light of the peculiarities of human nature. The review suggests that successful healthcare financing reform boils down to working out a cost/risk-sharing formula between government and citizens that can effectively preserve the incentives for efficient utilization of healthcare resources and for preventive care, while limiting the financial risk of citizens. The paper will also address issues arising from aging and redistributive concerns, as well as political and administrative feasibility.

Livestock On The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument: A Summary Of Stocking Rates, Utilization, And Management, Paul E. Hosten, Henry Whitridge, Dulcey Schuster, John Alexander

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This paper describes range management related practices to provide a historic and landscape context for studies examining the influence of livestock on objects of biological interest within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Historic records show livestock numbers increased rapidly following initial settlement by Euro-Americans. Anecdotal data suggests that stocking rates early in the last century were greater than current stocking rates by at least an order of magnitude. Historic unregulated season-long use of the uplands during the spring, summer and fall resulted in severe environmental degradation. Disagreements between livestock operators and the desire of agency personnel to improve the condition of …

With 2005 retail sales close to $4.8 million, cultured dairy products are driving the growth of dairy foods consumption. Starter cultures are of great industrial significance in that they play a vital role in the manufacturing, flavor, and texture development of fermented dairy foods. Furthermore, additional interest in starter bacteria has been generated because of the data accumulating on the potential health benefits of these organisms. Today, starter cultures for fermented foods are developed mainly by design rather than by the traditional screening methods and trial and error. Advances in genetics and molecular biology have provided opportunities for genomic studies …
