Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
Acute altitude exposure causes a loss of total body water and plasma volume. Glycerol ingestion has been shown to be rapidly absorbed by the intestine, leading to increases in serum osmolality, plasma osmolality, and total body water. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of glycerol ingestion on fluid balance and cardiovascular hemodynamics at rest and during exercise during hypobaric hypoxia. Twelve men (33 ± 8 yr, 177 ± 3 cm, 75 ± 11 kg, 52 ± 10 ml O2 · kg-1 · min-1) each completed 4, 3.5 hr trials in a randomized design: (A) 6% carbohydrate/electrolyte …
Nutrient Cycling In Forage Production Systems, David A. Wedin, Michael P. Russelle
Nutrient Cycling In Forage Production Systems, David A. Wedin, Michael P. Russelle
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
In most forage production systems, the nutrients needed for plant growth are provided by microbially mediated breakdown and release of plant-available mineral nutrients from dead plant tissues, livestock excreta, soil organic matter, and geochemically bound mineral forms. Even in fertilized forage systems, determining appropriate fertilizer application rates requires a "systems" approach on the part of the manager (e.g., Di and Cameron, 2000; Rotz et al., 2002). Fertilizer additions are simply one input in the system of inputs, outputs, pools, and fluxes that characterize nutrient cycling in a particular ecosystem.
Nitrogen Management For Wheat Protein And Yield In The Esperance Port Zone, Jeremy Lemon
Nitrogen Management For Wheat Protein And Yield In The Esperance Port Zone, Jeremy Lemon
Bulletins 4000 -
This manual is part of a joint project between the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) with funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). Growers in the Esperance port zone have been concerned with declining protein levels in wheat and its impact on farm returns as well as strong messages from processors of Esperance wheat that they require higher protein in the wheat they mill and process.
The project entailed grower involvement in designing and executing field scale experiments using farmer machinery, grower workshops, field days and meetings to …

Kathy Cerminara, Collateral Damage: The Aftermath of the Political Culture Wars in Schiavo, 29 Western New England Law Review 279 (2007). Theresa Marie Schiavo died a celebrity at the age of 42 in Pinellas Park, Florida, in early 2005. She never sought the public spotlight; she never even knew she was a celebrity. She became a celebrity, one of the best-known figures in bioethics, because of politics. This Article examines the politics surrounding her death and draws some conclusions about the aftermath for those left behind in the America Ms. Schiavo departed. The lessons of Schiavo are mixed. It …

This research aimed to evaluate the effects of adding a combination of exogenous enzymes to starter diets varying in protein content and fed to broilers vaccinated at day of hatch with live oocysts and then challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. Five hundred four 1-d-old male Cobb-500 chickens were distributed in 72 cages. The design consisted of 12 treatments. Three anticoccidial control programs [ionophore (IO), coccidian vaccine (COV), and coccidia-vaccine + enzymes (COV + EC)] were evaluated under 3 CP levels (19, 21, and 23%), and 3 unmedicated-uninfected (UU) negative controls were included for each one of the protein levels. All …
Spiritual Economics: Some Financial Considerations Of Mormon Settlement In Illinois, R Philip Reynolds
Spiritual Economics: Some Financial Considerations Of Mormon Settlement In Illinois, R Philip Reynolds
Librarian and Staff Publications
Thirty thousand Mormons Lived in Western Illinois in the 1840’s, with only about half of them living in Nauvoo. Almost all discussion concerning Mormons between 1839 and 1846 is limited to Nauvoo. Researchers are lucky to find a handful of brief articles about Mormons outside the city. Upon further investigation, these settlements emerge as being far more important to the success of Nauvoo than this neglect indicates.
Ultimately, most settlements resulted from three causes: Mormon interaction and experience with Illinois before their expulsion from Missouri, overwhelming economic need, and proselyting successes. In many of their actions, church leaders assumed a …
Seasonal And Diel Patterns Of Manatee Habitat Use, Monica Ann Ross
Seasonal And Diel Patterns Of Manatee Habitat Use, Monica Ann Ross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
State and Federal agencies have created sanctuaries and speed zones to help reduce manatee mortality while incorporating the recreational and commercial resource needs of these same habitats for humans. Specific habitat resources are considered necessary to increase manatee survivorship. We have only recently begun to address how manatees use some of these resources based on physiological or reproductive strategies. In this study, I quantified patterns of habitat use during seasonal and diel periods for different sex and reproductive manatee classes using data from a radio-telemetry study conducted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission during 1991-1996. I used five …

Using Dried Corn, Lorna Saboe-Wounded Head, Gabrielle Tiomanipi
Using Dried Corn, Lorna Saboe-Wounded Head, Gabrielle Tiomanipi
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Sun-dried corn has long been a staple food in the Native American diet. Corn, a low-calorie food full of vitamins and minerals, can be dried using food preservation methods of sun-drying, solar-drying, or dehydration with a home dehydrator. When dried, corn is lightweight and does not need to be refrigerated for storage. A half cup of dried corn will re-hydrate to yield one cup. Dried corn can be used in soups and stews, eaten as a snack, or ground as cornmeal. Traditionally, Native Americans carried large quantities of dried corn as tribes traveled from camp to camp. The following traditional …

Simulations Of Phytoplankton Species And Carbon Production In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean 1. Model Configuration And Ecosystem Dynamics, Baris Salihoglu, Eileen E. Hofmann
Simulations Of Phytoplankton Species And Carbon Production In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean 1. Model Configuration And Ecosystem Dynamics, Baris Salihoglu, Eileen E. Hofmann
Journal of Marine Research
The primary objective of this research is to investigate phytoplankton community response to variations in physical forcing and biological processes in the Cold Tongue region of the equatorial Pacific Ocean at 0N, 140W. This research objective was addressed using a one-dimensional multicomponent lower trophic level ecosystem model that includes detailed algal physiology, such as spectrally-dependent photosynthetic processes and iron limitation on algal growth. The ecosystem model is forced by a one-year (1992) time series of spectrally-dependent light, temperature, and water column mixing obtained from a Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean (TAO) Array mooring. Autotrophic growth is represented by five algal groups, which have …
