Coyotes As Sentinels For Monitoring Bovine Tuberculosis Prevalence In White-Tailed Deer, Todd Atwood, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Thomas Deliberto, Holly Smith, Justin Stevenson Jan 2007

Coyotes As Sentinels For Monitoring Bovine Tuberculosis Prevalence In White-Tailed Deer, Todd Atwood, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Thomas Deliberto, Holly Smith, Justin Stevenson

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), is endemic in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in 5 counties (Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, and Presque Isle) in the northeastern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The presence of a wildlife reservoir of tuberculosis in Michigan and the incidence of bTB in cattle (Bos taurus) resulted in Michigan losing its bTB accredited-free status. Subsequent wildlife surveillance programs identified relatively high disease prevalence in coyotes (Canis latrans), generating interest in their potential to serve as a sentinel species to detect bTB prevalence in white-tailed deer. …

Anaerobic Oxalate Consumption By Microorganisms In Forest Soils, Steven L. Daniel, Christine Pilsl, Harold L. Drake Jan 2007

Anaerobic Oxalate Consumption By Microorganisms In Forest Soils, Steven L. Daniel, Christine Pilsl, Harold L. Drake

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The microbial consumption of oxalate was examined under anaerobic conditions in soil suspensions at 15-20 degree C. With soil (horizon Ah, pH 6.4) from a beech forest, microbial consumption of added oxalate (15 mM) began after 10 days, and oxalate was totally consumed by day 20. The presence of supplemental electron donors (acetate, glucose, vanillate, or hydrogen) or electron acceptors (nitrate or sulfate) did not significantly influence anaerobic oxalate consumption, whereas supplementation of soil suspensions with CO2/bicarbonate totally repressed oxalate consumption. Thus, CO2-, nitrate- or sulfate-respiring bacteria were apparently not active in the anaerobic consumption of oxalate in these soil …

Production Of Methanethiol And Volatile Sulfur Compounds By The Archaeon ‘‘Ferroplasma Acidarmanus’’, David J. Baumler, Kai F. Hung, Kwang Cheol Jeong, Charles W. Kaspar

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Acidophiles are typically isolated from sulfaterich ecological niches yet the role of sulfur metabolism in their growth and survival is poorly defined. Studies of heterotrophically grown ‘‘Ferroplasma acidarmanus’’ showed that its growth requires a minimum of 100 mM of a sulfate-containing salt. Headspace gas analyses by GC/ MS determined that the volatile sulfur compound emitted by active ‘‘F. acidarmanus’’ cultures is methanethiol. In ‘‘F. acidarmanus’’ cultures grown either heterotrophically or chemolithotrophically, methanethiol was produced constitutively. Radiotracer studies with 35S-labeled methionine, cysteine, and sulfate showed that all three were used in methanethiol production. Additionally, 3H-labeled methionine was incorporated into methanethiol and …

Galliformes Specialist Group and Affiliated Societies: Reports and Other Materials

Executive Summary

Grouse have long attracted and fascinated people. Their display behaviour, and particularly their traditional communal mating grounds or "leks,” have inspired poetry and folklore as well as scientific theories on sexual selection and the evolution of mating systems. In many parts of their range, grouse hunting still plays a major role in the culture, economy, and subsistence of local communities.

The 2006-2010 Grouse Action Plan provides an overview to the distribution, status and threats to all 18 grouse species worldwide and identifies the most immediate conservation needs. It is a product of the joint expertise of the Grouse …

Beneficially Impacting Teenagers' Knowledge And Ability To Deal With Migraines, Mollie Newman Jan 2007

Beneficially Impacting Teenagers' Knowledge And Ability To Deal With Migraines, Mollie Newman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Migraines are a growing epidemic, without a lot of medical research there is no definite cause or cure for migraines. My migraines came about when I was twelve years old, suffering through school I found some days unbearable, doctors never had a straight answer as to what triggered my migraines and they prescribed me a variety of prescriptions. I feel that I can help those students of River High School in Carmel, CA by spreading my knowledge to them about how important diet is in everyday life. Those who may not suffer from migraines will benefit by learning the importance …

Youth Obesity : Putting A Price On Life, Mary Catherine Langford, Serena Pedraza Jan 2007

Youth Obesity : Putting A Price On Life, Mary Catherine Langford, Serena Pedraza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Youth obesity is increasing at an alarming rate and influenced by a number of factors. The rising costs of obesity include related illness such as diabetes, eating disorders, depression, and eventual disability or worse, death, can be avoided. This is possible by working together as individuals, part of a greater system to change our lives. We found out why the media has only chosen to focus on the issue now, in 2007. The obesity epidemic is a problem for all ages, and we felt that it was most important to educate children on the negative effects that advertising can have …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

To facilitate delivery and use of the Fuels Planning: Science Synthesis and Integration Project’s (Project) products, the Project team engaged in a series of technology transfer activities throughout the life of the project. These included bringing land managers into the design and development phase, funding and staffing a specific delivery phase, and conducting an external evaluation to focus future activities. Our plans were informed by concepts central to the diffusion of the innovation theory; in turn, our activities deepened our understanding of the theory and its application to fuels management.

Exploration Into The Head Start Fade Phenomenon, Deborah Tenjeras Clarke Jan 2007

Exploration Into The Head Start Fade Phenomenon, Deborah Tenjeras Clarke

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Head Start fade effect, documented since the 1970s, finds that students who make gains in I.Q. and social skills in the Head Start program later see those positive effects diminish in the early years of schooling and disappear altogether by the end of third grade. The hypothesis proposed in this study was as follows: Group I Head Start students who experience full-day kindergarten every day in small classes, and continue in small classes through grades one, two, and possibly three, will not demonstrate the Head Start fade effect, or will have less fade, than Group II Head Start students …

Effect Of Starvation On Global Gene Expression And Proteolysis In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Mohamed Salem, Jeff Silverstein, Caird E. Rexroad Iii, Jianbo Yao Jan 2007

Effect Of Starvation On Global Gene Expression And Proteolysis In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Mohamed Salem, Jeff Silverstein, Caird E. Rexroad Iii, Jianbo Yao

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Fast, efficiently growing animals have increased protein synthesis and/or reduced protein degradation relative to slow, inefficiently growing animals. Consequently, minimizing the energetic cost of protein turnover is a strategic goal for enhancing animal growth. Characterization of gene expression profiles associated with protein turnover would allow us to identify genes that could potentially be used as molecular biomarkers to select for germplasm with improved protein accretion.

Results

We evaluated changes in hepatic global gene expression in response to 3-week starvation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Microarray analysis revealed a coordinated, down-regulated expression of protein biosynthesis genes in starved …

Pkcepsilon And An Increase In Intracellular Calcium Concentration Are Necessary For Pgf2alpha To Inhibit Lh-Stimulated Progesterone Secretion In Cultured Bovine Steroidogenic Luteal Cells, Madhusudan P. Goravanahally, Aritro Sen, Emmet K. Inskeep, Jorge A. Flores Jan 2007

Flores

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The hypotheses that PKCepsilon is necessary for: 1) PGF2alpha to inhibit LH-stimulated progesterone (P4) secretion, and 2) for the expression of key prostaglandin synthesizing/metabolizing enzymes were tested in bovine luteal cells in which PKCepsilon expression had been ablated using a validated siRNA protocol. Steroidogenic cells from Day -6 bovine corpus luteum (CL) were isolated and transfected to reduce PKCepsilon expression after 48, 72 and 96 h. A third tested hypothesis was that an increase in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) is the cellular mechanism through which PGF2alpha inhibits luteal progesterone. The hypothesis was tested with two pharmacological agents. In the first …

Background

Of the five sub-phenotypes defining metabolic syndrome, all are known to have strong genetic components (typically 50–80% of population variation). Studies defining genetic predispositions have typically focused on older populations with metabolic syndrome and/or type 2 diabetes. We hypothesized that the study of younger populations would mitigate many confounding variables, and allow us to better define genetic predisposition loci for metabolic syndrome.

Methods

We studied 610 young adult volunteers (average age 24 yrs) for metabolic syndrome markers, and volumetric MRI of upper arm muscle, bone, and fat pre- and post-unilateral resistance training.

Results

We found the PPARα L162V polymorphism …

Effect Of Temperature On Gamete Production And Biochemical Composition Of Gonads In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Victoria K. Gibbs, Stephen A. Watts, Addison L. Lawrence Jan 2007

Effect Of Temperature On Gamete Production And Biochemical Composition Of Gonads In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Victoria K. Gibbs, Stephen A. Watts, Addison L. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Temperature is one of the most important proximate factors affecting the biology of ectothermal organisms. In the sea urchin, Lytechimus variegatus, the reproductive cycle in wild populations is correlated with changing water temperature, suggesting that reproduction may be dependent, in part, on temperature. Adult L. variegatus (ca. 35.63 ± 1.24 g wet weight, 40-mm diameter) were collected in October 2001 from St. Joseph Bay, FL (30°N, 85.5°W) and transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sea urchins were placed into nine 80-liter aquaria (n = eight sea urchins per aquarium) maintained in enclosed incubators (n = three aquaria …

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Mammals are aerobes that harbor an intestinal ecosystem dominated by large numbers of anaerobic microorganisms. However, the role of oxygen in the intestinal ecosystem is largely unexplored. We used systematic mutational analysis to determine the role of respiratory metabolism in the streptomycin-treated mouse model of intestinal colonization. Here we provide evidence that aerobic respiration is required for commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli to colonize mice. Our results showed that mutants lacking ATP synthase, which is required for all respiratory energy-conserving metabolism, were eliminated by competition with respiratory-competent wild-type strains. Mutants lacking the high-affinity cytochrome bd oxidase, which is used when …

L-Fucose Stimulates Utilization Of D-Ribose By Escherichia Coli Mg1655 Δfucao And E. Coli Nissle 1917 Δfucao Mutants In The Mouse Intestine And In M9 Minimal Medium, Steven M. Autieri, Jeremy J. Lins, Mary P. Leatham, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli MG1655 uses several sugars for growth in the mouse intestine. To determine the roles of l-fucose and d-ribose, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant and an E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant were fed separately to mice along with wild-type E. coli MG1655. The E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant colonized the intestine at a level 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the wild type, but the E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant and the wild type colonized at nearly identical levels. Surprisingly, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO ΔrbsK mutant was eliminated from …
