Developmental Risks And Psychosocial Adjustment Among Low-Income Brazilian Youth, Marcela Raffaelli, Silvia H. Koller, Elder Cerqueria-Santos, Normanda Araujo De Morais

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Exposure to developmental risks in three domains (community, economic, and family), and relations between risks and psychosocial well-being, were examined among 918 impoverished Brazilian youth aged 14-19 (M = 15.8 years, 51.9% female) recruited in low-income neighborhoods in one city in Southern Brazil. High levels of developmental risks were reported, with levels and types of risks varying by gender, age, and (to a lesser extent) race. Associations between levels of risks in the various domains and indicators of psychological (e.g., self-esteem, negative emotionality) and behavioral (e.g., substance use) adjustment differed for male and female respondents. Findings build on prior …

"Heidegger’S Will To Power," Journal Of The British Society For Phenomenology, Vol. 38, No. 1 (January 2007): 37-60, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

I argue that Heidegger deliberately composed the Beiträge zur Philosophie in order to keep it as an unpublished work throughout his life. In 1935, Heidegger was named to the board of directors for the National Socialist edition of Nietzsche’s collected works. This experience brought Heidegger into contact with the editorial forces that control an author’s legacy, even an author of Nietzsche’s formidable stylistic powers. And as is typical enough, the parallel Heidegger drew was a personal one. In response, Heidegger composed what might stand as his own “Nachlaß” material. The Beiträge would then work to limit Heidegger’s vulnerability to editorial …

Role Of Ashwangandha (Withania Somnifera) In Immune Modulation: Proposed Influence In Immune-Regulation, Subhasis Chattopadhyay, Robert E. Cone

SoM Articles

The immune system evolved to protect organisms from an infinite variety of disease-causing agents but to avoid harmful responses to self. However, such a powerf~dl efense mechanism requires regulation. Immune regulation includes homeostatic and cellmediated targeted mechanisms to the activation, differentiation and function of antigen-triggered immuno-competent cells and irnmunoregulatory cells. The regulation of the immune system has been a major challenge for the management of autoimmune disorders, tumor immunity, infectious diseases and organ transplants. However, irnmuno-modulatory procedures used by modern medicine to induce immunoregulatory function have deleterious side effects. Ashwangandha (Withania somnifera), an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine is being …

Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha Jan 2007

Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha

SoM Articles

In Ayurvedic texts rheumatologic diseases are described under 'Sandhgat Roga", the diseases of joints. Although many of the diseases under this category resemble rheurnatologic diseases classified under western medicine, the approach to differential diagnosis may be different. For greater understanding of Ayurvedic concept of rheurnatologic diseases only few diseases are discussed here. The case presentation of Amavafa provides greater understanding of how Ayurvedic differential diagnosis is made in context of its western counterpart, the rheumatoid arthritis.

Non-Participatory Poverty, Carrie Curtis Jan 2007

Non-Participatory Poverty, Carrie Curtis

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

In a capitalistic market society, all individuals should have an equal opportunity to participate, with varying extents, in consumerism. Democracy entitles one to political participation but people have come to value consumer participation as having more importance as shopping and the exchange of goods and services have become an important part of everyday living. Yet not everyone can participate in consumerism and they end up suffering, especially the children living in poverty. These children internalize the message that since they cannot participate in a society based on material consumption, they cannot belong. Poverty not only causes individuals to experience their …

Undergraduate Scholarship In The College Of Arts And Sciences 2007 Book Of Abstracts, Winthrop University, The College Of Arts And Sciences, Winthrop University Jan 2007

Undergraduate Scholarship In The College Of Arts And Sciences 2007 Book Of Abstracts, Winthrop University, The College Of Arts And Sciences, Winthrop University

Abstract Books

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly presents our fifth Book of Abstracts that highlights the undergraduate scholarship conducted in the college by students with their faculty mentors. As the quote by James Russell Lowell implies, the pursuit of knowledge involves more than acquiring facts; it requires posing relevant questions, critically examining information, and clearly communicating conclusions. The high level of scholarship reflected in this book is a testament to the students’ development as scholars and the effective mentorship provided by the Winthrop faculty.

On The Legal Consequences Of Sauces: Should Thomas Keller's Recipes Be Per Se Copyrightable?, Christopher J. Buccafusco Jan 2007

On The Legal Consequences Of Sauces: Should Thomas Keller's Recipes Be Per Se Copyrightable?, Christopher J. Buccafusco

All Faculty Scholarship

The restaurant industry now takes in over $500 billion a year, but recent courts have been skeptical of the notion that one of its most valuable assets, original recipes, are subject to copyright protection. With more litigation looming and the contours of the debate insufficiently mapped out, this article establishes the appropriate groundwork for analyzing the copyrightability of recipes. I show that, contrary to recent appellate court opinions, recipes meet the statutory requirements for copyrightability. I argue, by analogizing to musical compositions, that written recipes work to satisfy the fixation requirement of copyright law just as musical notation does for …
