Review Of Harvest For Hope: A Guide To Mindful Eating By Jane Goodall With Gary Mcavoy And Gail Hudson, Charles A. Francis Apr 2007

Review Of Harvest For Hope: A Guide To Mindful Eating By Jane Goodall With Gary Mcavoy And Gail Hudson, Charles A. Francis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

One of the world's preeminent experts on primate behavior, author Jane Goodall now invests her boundless energy traveling and speaking about conservation. After years of studying chimpanzees in the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, Goodall found their very existence threatened by poachers, by encroachment of farming into their habitat, and by global forces far from their wild environment. She is now on a mission to inform the public about what is wrong with our society and its impact on the planet. Harvest for Hope catalogs the problems and provides practical solutions.

Population Characteristics And Health Service Use By Latino Immigrants To Southwest Missouri, Suzanne E. Walker, Susan Dollar, Ravilldra G. Amonker

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The rapid influx and new demographic patterns of Latino immigrants to the United States have precipitated numerous pressing issues, among them health and healthcare disparities. The relatively recent phenomenon of high Latino immigration rates to rural areas is increasingly common in the Midwest and Great Plains states, where they are drawn by the labor market. A rural setting, low socioeconomic status, and high concentrations of minorities have been shown to be closely intertwined, and such regions are often medically underserved. Such describes rural southwest Missouri, where we collected data in four counties on demographics, socioeconomic factors, healthcare perceptions, and use …

Associations between 3 commercially available genetic marker panels (GeneSTAR Quality Grade, GeneSTAR Tenderness, and Igenity Tender-GENE) and quantitative beef traits were validated by the US National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. Validation was interpreted to be the independent confirmation of the associations between genetic tests and phenotypes, as claimed by the commercial genotyping companies. Validation of the quality grade test (GeneSTAR Quality Grade) was carried out on 400 Charolais x Angus crossbred cattle, and validation of the tenderness tests (GeneSTAR Tenderness and Igenity Tender-GENE) was carried out on over 1,000 Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle. The GeneSTAR Quality Grade marker …

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To assess physical activity levels among Saudi adults, and to examine the relationships of physical activity with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and obesity prevalence. METHODS: Data taken from the Coronary Artery Disease in Saudis Study which is a National Epidemiological Health Survey carried out between 1995 and 2000. Participants included 17395 Saudi males and females aged 30-70 years, selected randomly using a multistage stratified cluster sampling technique. Leisure-type and sport-related physical activities including walking were assessed using an interviewed-administered questionnaire. The activities were classified into five intensity categories and assigned metabolic equivalents (MET) according to the …

Type 1 Diabetes-Related Epidemiological, Clinical And Laboratory Findings. An Evaluation With Special Regard To Autoimmunity In Children, Gulay Karaguzel, Seda Ozer, Sema Akcurin, Doga Turkkahraman, Iffet Bircan

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our data related with epidemiologic features, clinical presentation, and laboratory findings in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) and to compare specific characteristics of immune-mediated subtype (DM 1A) with idiopathic one (DM 1B). METHODS: We classified 115 children with DM1 according to the presence (DM 1A, n=77) or absence (DM 1B, n=38) of diabetes-related autoantibodies in Akdeniz University Hospital, Turkey from January 2000 to December 2005. RESULTS: A total of 43 patients (37%) in the whole group, had onset of DM1 during the winter months and the lowest frequency occurred in summer (p<0.005). The duration of breast-feeding, introduction time of cow9s milk, and seasonal distribution of birth-month or onset of disease did not significantly differ in both groups. When compared with patients who had no documented honeymoon period, the patients who had a documented honeymoon period had lower HbA1c levels (p<0.01) at the onset. A large percentage of patients with DM 1A were positive for glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GAD65). CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference between patients with DM 1A and DM 1B with respect to epidemiologic features, and clinical presentation suggested that these factors do not play a major role either in creating a disease-initiating effect or in the development of islet autoimmunity. However, determination of GAD65 with HbA1c levels at the onset of the disease may ensure some useful information regarding clinical course.

Disease And Demography In The Plateau, Robert T. Boyd, Cecilia D. Gregory Apr 2007

Disease And Demography In The Plateau, Robert T. Boyd, Cecilia D. Gregory

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Twelve years ago, Roderick Sprague asked the authors-an anthropologist trained in epidemiology and a physician with training in paleopathology-to prepare this paper for his projected book, Burial Practices of the Plateau. Since that volume has not seen print, and with the intention of bringing the information herein to the attention of regional researchers, in early 2004 Sprague asked us if we would be willing to have it published as the first in a special numbered series of articles in the Journal of Northwest Anthropology. We agreed, with the proviso that it be at least moderately updated to reflect developments since …

A Study On Obesity And Its Relationship To Socioeconomic Background And Current Earnings, Ian Cohen '07 Apr 2007

A Study On Obesity And Its Relationship To Socioeconomic Background And Current Earnings, Ian Cohen '07

The Park Place Economist

With larger meal portions and fewer natural food production methods, many suggest that people find it difficult to maintain a healthy diet. Nevertheless, certain individuals have been able to maintain a high-quality nutritional status and avoid this unhealthy condition. What are the reasons for these differences between individuals in weight outcomes? Moreover, how does this unhealthy weight outcome affect an individual’s current economic situation? In this study, I will examine the effects of socioeconomic background on obesity and test whether an individual’s weight has an impact on their present salary or wage levels.

Banish Belly Bulge And Chisel Your Bis: A Semiotic Analysis Of Gender Representations In Fitness Magazine Advertising, Lauren A. Teal Apr 2007

Banish Belly Bulge And Chisel Your Bis: A Semiotic Analysis Of Gender Representations In Fitness Magazine Advertising, Lauren A. Teal

Masters Theses

This study examined gender ideologies in the advertising of two popular fitness magazines, Shape and Men's Fitness, using Kress and van Leeuwen's visual semiotic theory (1996). The aim of this study was to determine how fitness magazine advertising participates in the construction of gender identities, and to identify what rhetorical and visual strategies are commonly employed.

Through an examination of the way gender identities are constructed by fitness magazines my research has concluded that advertising within both magazines promotes idealized body types and stereotypical gender identities for men and women. In Shape's advertisements, women are wives and homemakers; they …

After approximately two decades of using the Quality Core Curriculum, in 2005 the State of Georgia began the process of implementing the new Georgia Performance Standard. In this article the authors examine the strengths and weaknesses of this new curriculum, along with the proposed model of implementation. In this examination, the authors will attempt to situate both the standards and their implementation within the current political struggle over curriculum in the United States.

Comparison Of 2 Vegetation-Height Management Practices For Wildlife Control At Airports, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott C. Barras, Glen E. Bernhardt, Bradley F. Blackwell, Jonathon D. Cepek Apr 2007

Comparison Of 2 Vegetation-Height Management Practices For Wildlife Control At Airports, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott C. Barras, Glen E. Bernhardt, Bradley F. Blackwell, Jonathon D. Cepek

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Vegetation-height management is a potential method to reduce bird numbers at airports. Based on studies in Europe, researchers recommended vegetation heights around 25 cm; however, preliminary studies in the United States produced conflicting results regarding the effect of tall (18 to >25 cm) vegetation on bird numbers at airports. From 1999 to 2002, we compared birds and other wildlife use of 4 short-vegetation plots (mean maximum height of 15.6 cm ± 5.1 SE and visual obstruction reading of 4.6 ± 3.0 cm) and 4 tall-vegetation plots (mean maximum height of 26.9 ± 8.4 cm and visual obstruction reading of 10.0 …

Continuing Education And Knowledge Retention: A Comparison Of Online And Face-To-Face Deliveries, Julie A. Garrison

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Objective: Drawing upon earlier research that surveyed students’ grasp of subject knowledge after taking either an online or face-to-face EBM course, this paper explores the effectiveness of a Web-based professional continuing education course, compared with an equivalent face-to- face version. The course was designed to teach practicing medical librarians how to participate in and advocate for Evidence Based Medicine at their individual institutions. Methods: Seventy-two practicing librarians, self-selected to participate in either the distance education eight week course or the eight hour face-to-face class. Using a modified version of the Fresno Test of Competence in Evidence-Based Medicine, the authors compared …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We propose research to fill key gaps in the areas of population and community ecology, based on a National Science Foundation workshop identifying funding priorities for the next 5–10 years. Our vision for the near future of ecology focuses on three core areas: predicting the strength and context-dependence of species interactions across multiple scales; identifying the importance of feedbacks from individual interactions to ecosystem dynamics; and linking pattern with process to understand species coexistence. We outline a combination of theory development and explicit, realistic tests of hypotheses needed to advance population and community ecology.
