Understanding Tropical Montane Reforestation: A Comparison Of Soil And Throughfall Nutrients In Primary And Secondary Forests Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, Tyler Kartzinel
Understanding Tropical Montane Reforestation: A Comparison Of Soil And Throughfall Nutrients In Primary And Secondary Forests Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, Tyler Kartzinel
Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal
Attempts to accelerate reforestation in tropical montane forests have been ineffective. One of the greatest obstacles to reforestation is the restoration of depleted nutrient capital to facilitate forest growth. A natural source of allochthonous nutrients was sought to enhance the soil nutrient budget of the secondary forest and facilitate plant growth. Epiphytes catalyze the deposition of allochthonous nutrients in the primary forest where they are abundant. In secondary forests, epiphyte abundance is severely diminished due to inhospitable canopy structure. This study compared the plant-availability of nitrate, phosphate, and potassium in soil and precipitation under a primary forest, mid-succession secondary forest, …

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou
Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants is harmful during murine infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis in humans. Dietary supplementation with vitamin E and selenium was shown to increase tissue cyst number, tissue pathology, and weight loss during T. gondii infection. The goal of the present study was to determine the impact of diet on global gene expression in the brains of infected and non-infected mice and to identify the major genes that are differentially expressed, determine their function, and discover the molecular pathways in which these genes participate. Whole …
The Cuban Embargo: Why Us Sanctions Fail And What To Do About It, Joseph Ribas
The Cuban Embargo: Why Us Sanctions Fail And What To Do About It, Joseph Ribas
Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal
The Cuban embargo seems to have become a staple of US-foreign policy, however, there has yet been no democratic transition on the small island nation. This research article seeks to answer the questions: ‘why did the embargo fail?’, ‘what are/should be its goals?’, and ‘what can be done to create a more effective policy?’ In order to establish effective policies with Cuba, the United States must rethink the goals, purpose and reactions of the current and past sanctions and actions that have been put into place. This paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of US foreign policies toward Cuba including …

Managing Customer Knowledge In Retail Environment, Sourav Mukherji
Managing Customer Knowledge In Retail Environment, Sourav Mukherji
Working Papers
Customer knowledge can be a critical source of competitive advantage in retail business. Ir. this theoretical paper, three sources of customer knowledge are identified in the retail environment, namely customer transactions, customer interactions and customer communities of practice. Lessons for managing these three types of knowledge are derived from knowledge management practices of knowledge intensive service industries such as management consulting and software development. Finally, a decision model premised on consumer behaviour and purchase characteristics is proposed that would enable retailers to focus their knowledge management efforts such that they can leverage the potential of customer knowledge for both productivity …

Overnourishing pregnant adolescent sheep promotes maternal growth but reduces placental mass, lamb birth weight and circulating progesterone. This study aimed to determine whether altered progesterone reflected transcript abundance for StAR (cholesterol transporter) and the steroidogenic enzymes (Cyp11A1, Hsd3b and Cyp17). Circulating and placental expression of ovine placental lactogen (oPL) was also investigated. Adolescent ewes with singleton pregnancies were fed high (H) or moderate (M) nutrient intake diets to restrict or support placental growth. Experiment 1: peripheral progesterone and oPL concentrations were measured in H (n=7) and M (n=6) animals across gestation (days 7-140). Experiment 2: progesterone was measured to mid- …

Novel Metabolism In Chlamydomonas Through The Lens Of Genomics, Arthur R. Grossman, Martin Croft, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Sebeeha S. Merchant, Matthew C. Posewitz, Simon Prochnik, Martin H. Spalding
Novel Metabolism In Chlamydomonas Through The Lens Of Genomics, Arthur R. Grossman, Martin Croft, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Sebeeha S. Merchant, Matthew C. Posewitz, Simon Prochnik, Martin H. Spalding
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
Chlamydomonas has traditionally been exploited as an organism that is associated with sophisticated physiological, genetic and molecular analyses, all of which have been used to elucidate several biological processes, especially photosynthesis and flagella function and assembly. Recently, the genomics of Chlamydomonas has been combined with other technologies to unveil new aspects of metabolism, including inorganic carbon utilization, anaerobic fermentation, the suite and functions of selenoproteins, and the regulation of vitamin biosynthesis. These initial fi ndings represent the first glimpse through a genomic window onto the highly complex metabolisms that characterize a unicellular, photosynthetic eukaryote that has maintained both plant-like and …

Sorghum: A Substitute For Maize In The Nicaraguan Poultry Industry, Intsormil
Sorghum: A Substitute For Maize In The Nicaraguan Poultry Industry, Intsormil
INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
The coffee crisis brought widespread unemployment, poverty and hunger to parts of Nicaragua. In some regions, 33% of the area’s children suffer malnutrition and child mortality claims ten out of every thousand children. Partially, in response to the coffee crisis, there is interest in promoting the poultry industry in Nicaragua, and international aid agencies are assisting Nicaraguan farmers with poultry projects. For example, the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. is currently managing a poultry project in Nicaragua called Gallinas de Patio, or backyard chickens. The project provides material and technical assistance to Nicaraguan families, enabling them to successfully raise …
