Temporal Variation And Habitat Use Of Nearshore Crab Populations In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Benjamin Daly
Temporal Variation And Habitat Use Of Nearshore Crab Populations In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Benjamin Daly
Marine Biology
Larval, juvenile, and adult crab distribution was surveyed in three different habitats in Kachemak Bay, Alaska from June 2005 to September 2006 to determine temporal and spatial variability. Crab distribution varied temporally and spatially in all life stages. Nine sites of varying habitat complexity were surveyed monthly using scuba, light traps, and shrimp pots to measure habitat variables, quantify larval, juvenile, and adult crabs, and survey potential crab predators. No single bay-wide variable determined the appearance of all crab larvae. Spatial differences in larval abundance probably resulted from large scale physical transport mechanisms. Overall juvenile and adult crab abundance increased …
Stress Physiology In Breeding Seabirds: Coping With A Variable Food Supply, Michael T. Shultz
Stress Physiology In Breeding Seabirds: Coping With A Variable Food Supply, Michael T. Shultz
Biological Sciences
Recent life-history models predict that long-lived seabirds, breeding in variable food environments, should exhibit flexible reproductive effort. However, these models assume that food availability fluctuates unpredictably and birds are unable to match reproductive output perfectly to food abundance. However, the degree to which predictable changes in food availability versus stochastic ones influence reproductive performance of seabirds is unknown. In this study we examined the role of food abundance prior to egg-laying versus food abundance during chick rearing for determining reproductive output of two species of high latitude nesting seabird; the Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) and Common Murre (Uria aalge). We …

Species Distribution Models For Denali National Park And Preserve, Alaska, Joy L. Ritter
Biological Sciences
The objective of this study is to explore the use of existing data to model the distribution of four species in Denali National Park; caribou, moose, grizzly bear, and wolf. Radiolocation data consisting of 1331 locations collected over three years for female caribou, 1329 locations collected over three years for female moose, 6579 locations collected over ten years for grizzly bears, and 2686 locations collected over three years for wolves were obtained from park biologists. A geographic information system was used to derive landscape characteristics associated with the animal locations and random locations placed in the same area. Caribou models …
Bioinformatics Tool Development And Sequence Analysis Of Rosaceae Family Expressed Sequence Tags, Margaret Staton
Bioinformatics Tool Development And Sequence Analysis Of Rosaceae Family Expressed Sequence Tags, Margaret Staton
All Dissertations
BACKGROUND: An international community of researchers has generated a significant number of Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) for the Rosaceae, an economically important plant family that includes most temperate fruits such as apple, cherry, peach, and strawberry as well as other commercially valuable members. ESTs are fragments of expressed genes that can be used for gene discovery, developing markers for mapping and cultivar improvement via marker assisted selection. Efficient dissemination and integration of this data is best facilitated through a centralized and curated database with associated sequence analysis tools.
DESCRIPTION: The Genome Database for Rosaceae (GDR) was initiated to provide a …

Comparative Immune Function In Wild Birds, Kevin David Matson
Comparative Immune Function In Wild Birds, Kevin David Matson
Dissertations
Over the last several decades, interest in quantifying immune function in comparative studies of wild animals has grown appreciably. Now, the field of ecological immunology is undergoing a transition, and ¿second generation¿ studies are being designed and carried out. With a greater appreciation of the complexity of immune systems, these second generation studies are commonly distinguished from their antecedents by making comparisons using multiple assays and including multiple species. I worked to advance this transition by developing novel approaches to comparative immunology, exploring the interrelationships among indices of immune function, and applying multiple indices to a question of comparative avian …

Pharmacokinetics Of Ultrasonically-Released, Micelle-Encapsulated Doxorubicin In The Rat Model And Its Effect On Tumor Growth, Bryant J. Staples
Pharmacokinetics Of Ultrasonically-Released, Micelle-Encapsulated Doxorubicin In The Rat Model And Its Effect On Tumor Growth, Bryant J. Staples
Theses and Dissertations
Chemotherapy is one of the most successful cancer treatments used today. Unfortunately, the amount of chemotherapy a patient can receive is limited by the associated negative side effects, such as cardiotoxicity, immune system suppression, and nephrotoxicity. Encapsulation of these drugs, Doxorubicin (DOX) in particular, in stabilized Pluronic micelles (Plurogel TM) shows success in limiting these harmful side effects. In previous studies, low-frequency ultrasound (US) has been shown, in vitro, to locally release DOX from these micelles. In this study, a novel drug delivery system involving the encapsulation of DOX in Plurogel and the release of the drug at the tumor …
Mountain Beaver: A Primitive Fossorial Rodent, Wendy M. Arjo
Mountain Beaver: A Primitive Fossorial Rodent, Wendy M. Arjo
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
As the largest mammalian order, rodents are nearly cosmopolitan in distribution, can exploit a broad spectrum of foods, and can often reach high population densities. One sole representative of the most primitive family of rodents, Aplodontidae, does not share some of these common rodent characteristics. The aplodontoid rodents in the family Aplodontidae and Mylagsulidae radiated during the Miocene from the Allomyinae family (Carraway and Verts 1993). The extinct Mylagaulidae represents the earlier radiation of these rodents who exhibited great specialization (Carraway and Verts 1993). Unlike the other members of the rodent order, mountain beavers are not prolific breeders; nor are …

Characteristics Of Manure Harvested From Beef Cattle Feedlots, William F. Kissinger, Richard K. Koelsch, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Open lot cattle production systems present unique challenges for nutrient planning processes. Previous estimates of quantities and characteristics of harvested manure from this type of facility are based upon data from the early 1970s. In addition, harvested manure is impacted by weather, feeding program, season, and pen management decisions. The objectives of this study are to characterize under commercial conditions for open lot beef systems: 1) harvested manure quantities and characteristics; 2) impact of factors such as feeding program, season, and management on harvested manure; and 3) mass balance for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Data from six commercial feedlots …

Out Of Control – On Purpose: Doe’S Dispersal Of Radioactive Waste Into Landfills And Consumer Products, Nuclear Information And Resource Center (Nirs), Diane D'Arrigo, Mary Olson
Nuclear Information and Resource Center (NIRS)
The purpose of this project was to understand how much nuclear weapons-generated radioactive waste, material and property the Department of Energy (DOE) releases into the marketplace. We sought to identify how the radioactivity gets out, legally and practically, and to the extent possible, where it goes. Since the production of atomic power and weapons involves many of the same radioactive-waste generating facilities throughout the nuclear fuel chain, we also sought to understand the larger context in which this man-made radioactivity is managed and released into general commerce.
We reviewed DOE’s national and site-specific policies, guidance, rules and procedures which allow …
