Prenatal protein malnutrition continues to be a significant problem in the world today. Exposure to prenatal protein malnutrition increases the risk of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders in adulthood including depression, schizophrenia and attentional deficit disorder. In the present experiment we have examined the effects of stress on extracellular serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine in the medial prefrontal cortex and dorsal hippocampus of rats exposed in utero to protein malnutrition. The medial prefrontal cortex and dorsal hippocampus were chosen as two limbic forebrain regions involved in learning and memory, attention and the stress response. Extracellular 5-HT and dopamine were determined in …

Examining The Effect Of Random Student Drug-Testing In A High School Setting, Jacqueline Amonette
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to ascertain the effectiveness of decreasing drug use in a high school setting by implementing a random student drug-testing program. High school students who were involved in any athletic or extracurricular activities or who were applying for a parking permit in one local school were required to obtain parental permission to participate in a random student drug-testing program. Approximately once a month, an outside agency performed confidential and private urinalysis screening at the high school on 10-14 students whose names were chosen randomly using a computer program. If a urine test was positive …

Consumer Attitudes And Acceptability Of Catfish Prepared In A Lowat Manner, Amanda Emad Al-Turk
Consumer Attitudes And Acceptability Of Catfish Prepared In A Lowat Manner, Amanda Emad Al-Turk
Theses and Dissertations
Consumption of farm-raised catfish in the United States has increased over the last few decades. However, consumers usually prefer it as a deepried product, especially in the southern United States. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the acceptability of lowat baked catfish using a Central Location Test. Subjects (n=137) tasted, compared, and evaluated samples of lowat baked catfish and deepried catfish. Results indicated that the fried product was favored (p <0.05) over the baked product. The majority of subjects (93.4%) identified the baked product as the healthier choice. Most subjects (85.7%) indicated that catfish was an overall healthy food choice. Reasons for consuming catfish included taste (75.6%), convenience (15.1%), health reasons (7.6%), and cost (1.7%). The majority of subjects (63.8%) indicated that they normally consumed catfish as a deepried product, but 91.9% indicated that they would be willing to consume catfish prepared in a lowat manner.

T-Cell Dysfunction By Hcv Core Protein Involves Pd-1/Pd-L1 Signaling., Billy Ellis King
T-Cell Dysfunction By Hcv Core Protein Involves Pd-1/Pd-L1 Signaling., Billy Ellis King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1989 the hepatitis C virus was identified as a significant cause of post-transfusion hepatitis. Nearly two decades later there is still no vaccine, inadequate treatment options, and limited understanding of how the virus establishes chronicity in the majority of the people it infects. Recent reports suggest that the interaction of a negative co-stimulatory pathway mediated by PD-1 and PDL-1 is associated with persistent viral infection. The role, if any, that PD-1/PDL-1 has in HCV infection is unknown. In this study we report that PD-1 is upregulated in T-cells from persons with chronic HCV infection when compared to healthy donors. …

Evaluation Of A Ninth Grade Transition Program For At-Risk Students., Terry William Caldwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have identified the transition from middle to high school as a critical point in teenagers' educational development. Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk students' success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems.
Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge.
A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat "PRIDE" …

Evaluating Satisfaction And Benefit From Nutrition Counseling From A Registered Dietitian Among Head And Neck Cancer Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy., Lori E. Watson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if patients with head or neck cancer receiving radiation were satisfied with the nutrition counseling they were receiving and if they obtained any benefit. Radiation to the head or neck region promotes side effects such as taste changes and chewing and swallowing difficultly that decrease food and fluid intake. A reduction in nutrients leads to weight loss, and weight loss in cancer patients increases the risk of morbidity and morality as well as decreases quality of life. Subjects were recruited from a local cancer treatment facility and a survey was administered. Subjects …
The Effect Of Hand Catching And Machine Catching Methods On Broiler Breast Meat Quality, Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan
The Effect Of Hand Catching And Machine Catching Methods On Broiler Breast Meat Quality, Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical and hand catching of broilers were performed to determine if differences existed in breast meat quality among catching methods. Meat quality results were summarized using a two-prong approach to investigate if average differences existed in meat quality through the determination of ultimate pH, rapid pH decline, color, water holding capacity, and tenderness within each treatment and by pinpointing individual quality problems within treatments. Two trials were conducted and revealed greater variation in meat quality during summer in comparison to winter within treatments in both catching methods. In winter, there was a lower incidence (p<0.05) of paleness in birds that were crated for 2h prior to euthanasia in comparison to birds immediately euthanized after catching within both hand and machine catching methods. Mechanical catching and crating for 2 hours was conducive to slightly better quality meat than hand catching in respect to averages and individual quality problems.

The Motivational Readiness To Change Leisure Time Physical Activity Behavior Of Mississippi Community College Students, Jerry Phillip Crenshaw
Theses and Dissertations
The stages of motivational readiness to change leisure time physical activity behavior of students from two Mississippi community colleges were investigated. The Stages of Motivational Readiness to Change (SMRC) model postulates that behavior change is a longitudinal process described by five stages that assess an individual?s motivational level relative to changing leisure time physical activity behavior. That is, individuals are positioned in one of the following five stages at any given point in time: (a) precontemplation (i.e., no intention to change); (b) contemplation (i.e., considering a change); (c) preparation (i.e., small changes already made toward an ultimate behavior goal); (d) …

The Relationship Between Food Security Status And Overweight Amongst Women Age 16-85 Years Old, Janice Carol Giddens
Theses and Dissertations
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002 were used to examine demographic factors and BMI as it related to household food security status of women 16-85 years of age. Four designations were used to classify households: fully food secure, marginally food secure, food insecure without hunger, and food insecure with hunger. Significant relationships exist between food security and age, education, ethnicity, poverty income ratio and BMI. Women from food insecure households with hunger were at greater risk of becoming overweight. Households of compromised food security status most likely had an income between 0-130% of the poverty …
Relationship Between Alcohol Consumption, Bmi, And Weight Perception In Women Aged 20-29 Years, Andrea Renee Komm
Relationship Between Alcohol Consumption, Bmi, And Weight Perception In Women Aged 20-29 Years, Andrea Renee Komm
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol consumption and overweight in women are both becoming more prevalent in the United States. Data from NHANES 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 was collected consisting of non-pregnant women between the ages of 20 and 29 years. Variables measured were BMI, drinking occasions, drinking consumption per week, and women?s perception of their weight. Data was analyzed using chi-square in application to SUDAAN to test significance between variables. Results indicated a correlation between weight perception and drinking occasions per week (p-value 0.013). Nutrition implications suggested that individuals who were classified as overweight had more drinking occasions than individuals classified as underweight.

Habitat Alteration By Hydrilla And Its Effect On Macroinvertebrate Community Structure And Bluegill Foraging Efficiency, Heather J. Theel
Habitat Alteration By Hydrilla And Its Effect On Macroinvertebrate Community Structure And Bluegill Foraging Efficiency, Heather J. Theel
Theses and Dissertations
Exotic invasive plant species can alter aquatic habitats potentially influencing the macroinvertebrate community and foraging fishes. Therefore, I investigated the hypothesis that Hydrilla verticillata will alter habitat important to macroinvertebrate community structure and bluegill foraging efficiency. Studies were conducted in ponds and aquaria. At the pond level, macroinvertebrate abundance, richness, and biomass in a hydrilla-dominated habitat did not differ significantly from a diverse plant habitat. Indicator taxa did differ significantly between respective treatments. The data suggest hydrilla beds may not provide increased macroinvertebrate abundance and richness compared to diverse plant beds as previously thought. In aquaria, habitat complexity (Ihv) and …
