Parasites Alter Community Structure, Chelsea L. Wood, James E. Byers, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Irit Altman May 2007

Parasites Alter Community Structure, Chelsea L. Wood, James E. Byers, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Irit Altman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Parasites often play an important role in modifying the physiology and behavior of their hosts and may, consequently, mediate the influence hosts have on other components of an ecological community. Along the northern Atlantic coast of North America, the dominant herbivorous snail Littorina littorea structures rocky intertidal communities through strong grazing pressure and is frequently parasitized by the digenean trematode Cryptocotyle lingua. We hypothesized that the effects of parasitism on host physiology would induce behavioral changes in L. littorea, which in turn would modulate L. littorea's influence on intertidal community composition. Specifically, we hypothesized that C. lingua …

Designing Cultural Probes To Study ‘Invisible’ Communitie In Brazil, Andrea Júdice, Marcelo Júdice May 2007

Designing Cultural Probes To Study ‘Invisible’ Communitie In Brazil, Andrea Júdice, Marcelo Júdice

Nordes Conference Series

The objectives of this article are to describe how and for what reasons probes can be applied for working with marginalised communities and to discuss the complexities involved in create probes for people with poor skills in reading and writing. People in these communities have a low level of education and a high level of health problems, live below the poverty line in slums, and are considered “invisible” by other, professedly “developed” communities. The applied Probe Packages were developed on the basis of information received from health area specialists and ethnographic data. We conclude that, despite the time consumed, the …

The Fittingness Of Fitness: The Movement Of Architecture At A Human Scale: A Reinvention Of The Typical Workplace, Emily Parris May 2007

The Fittingness Of Fitness: The Movement Of Architecture At A Human Scale: A Reinvention Of The Typical Workplace, Emily Parris

Architecture Theses and Projects

The intent of this proposal is to create a prototypical office building that promotes health and individual well-being. The architecture will focus on the needs and concerns of each worker in relation to their physical, emotional and spiritual health. Due to the fast-paced American lifestyle, individual health is suffering. The rates of obesity and depression in the United States are skyrocketing and architecture has an obligation to address this urgent issue in terms of design.

Larval Habitats Of Anopheles Gambiae S.S. (Diptera: Culicidae) Influences Vector Competence To Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites, Bernard A. Okech, Louis C. Gouagna, Guiyun Yan, John I. Githure, John C. Beier May 2007

Larval Habitats Of Anopheles Gambiae S.S. (Diptera: Culicidae) Influences Vector Competence To Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites, Bernard A. Okech, Louis C. Gouagna, Guiyun Yan, John I. Githure, John C. Beier

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background. The origin of highly competent malaria vectors has been linked to productive larval habitats in the field, but there isn't solid quantitative or qualitative data to support it. To test this, the effect of larval habitat soil substrates on larval development time, pupation rates and vector competence of Anopheles gambiae to Plasmodium falciparum were examined. Methods. Soils were collected from active larval habitats with sandy and clay substrates from field sites and their total organic matter estimated. An. gambiae larvae were reared on these soil substrates and the larval development time and pupation rates monitored. The emerging adult mosquitoes …

Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony May 2007

Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony

Theses (Pre-2016)

Incorporation of strain-specific synthetic DNA tags into yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene-deletion strains has enabled identification of gene functions by massively parallel growth rate analysis. However, it is important to confirm the sequences of these tags, because mutations introduced during construction could lead to significant errors in hybridization performance. To validate this experimental system, we . sequenced 11,812 synthetic 20-mer molecular bar codes and adjacent sequences (>1.8 megabases synthetic DNA) by pyrosequencing and Sanger methods. At least 31% ofthe genome-integrated 20-mer tags contain differences from those originally synthesized. However, these mutations result in anomalous hybridization in only a small subset …

The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Wellness, And Substance Dependence, Benjamin J. Warner May 2007

The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Wellness, And Substance Dependence, Benjamin J. Warner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between alexithymia, wellness, and substance dependence. Exploration of the relationship between alexithymia, emotional development, and wellness is largely absent in the literature, as is the use of wellness orientation in substance dependence treatment. This study was constructed from two samples, substance dependent clients in residential treatment in New Orleans, LA, and Austin, TX, and undergraduates from the University of New Orleans and the University of Texas at Austin. The total sample size for the study was n = 200. Each participant was administered the TAS-20 and the WEL. Four groups of n = 50 were …

Effects Of Bear Viewers And Photographers On Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos) At Hallo Bay, Katmai National Park And Preserve, Howard Blair French May 2007

Effects Of Bear Viewers And Photographers On Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos) At Hallo Bay, Katmai National Park And Preserve, Howard Blair French

Biological Sciences

We investigated the effects of bear viewing and photography on brown bears (Ursus arctos) that used open habitats at Hallo Bay, Katmai National Park and Preserve (KNPP), Alaska. We also investigated how bear use of the area varied with season, human presence, and time of day. We found that the mean number of bears present varied significantly with season, time of day, and human presence. There were significantly more bears present before the salmon season than during the salmon season; bear numbers increased significantly during the day, and there were significantly more bears when humans were present. Humans at varying …

Nutritional Quality Of Large Round Bale Silage As Affected By Compaction, Color Of Wrap, Or Preservative In Southcentral Alaska, Charlotte L. Lussier May 2007

Nutritional Quality Of Large Round Bale Silage As Affected By Compaction, Color Of Wrap, Or Preservative In Southcentral Alaska, Charlotte L. Lussier

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Large round bale silage (LRBS), fermented hay, baled at 45-65% moisture content might be a better product than air-dried hay for farmers and ranchers in Southcentral Alaska. Variable weather and sometimes unfavorable conditions for drying hay to the required 18% moisture content makes high quality hay production unpredictable. Our study was designed to determine what practices might produce the highest nutritional quality LRBS. Treatments included using black and white plastic bale wrap, two different baler compaction levels, and application of a buffered propionic acid preservative. The study used four different forage fields over a two year period. Three fields were …

Surface-Subsurface Hydrologic Exchange And Nutrient Dynamics In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Tanana River, Hannah M. Clilverd May 2007

Surface-Subsurface Hydrologic Exchange And Nutrient Dynamics In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Tanana River, Hannah M. Clilverd

Biological Sciences

The aquatic-terrestrial interface is an active site of biogeochemical transformation, regulating the flux of nutrients between ecosystems. I addressed the hydrologic controls on nitrogen biogeochemistry in the hyporheic zone of a glacially fed river. I measured hyporheic concentrations of solutes and gases along subsurface flowpaths on two islands. Denitrification was quantified using an in situ [delta]⁻¹⁵NO₃⁻ push-pull technique. Nitrate concentration was consistently greater in river than in hyporheic water. Denitrification ranged from 1.9 - 29.4 mgN kg sediment⁻¹ day⁻¹. Hotspots of methane partial pressure, averaging 50,000 ppmv, were found in densely vegetated areas with low oxygen concentration (<0.5 mgO₂ L⁻¹). Hyporheic flow was an important source of nitrogen to microbes and vegetation, transporting on average 0.41 gNO₃⁻-N m⁻² day⁻¹ through surface sediments. Results suggest that denitrification is a major sink for river nitrate in boreal forest floodplain soils, particularly at the river-sediment interface. The stability of the river hydro graph is a key factor regulating anaerobic metabolism in the hyporheic zone.

Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan May 2007

Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan

Anthropology

This masters thesis in dental anthropology and bioarchaeology examines discrete, non-metric dental data collected from skeletal remains of a Middle Formative era Mexican population at EI Pantano. This site is situated in Jalisco, West Mexico, and represents one of the earliest archaeological examples of transitional agriculture for this area. Materials recovered from the burials suggest that the yet-undiscovered settlement whose people used the cemetery had complex interactions with diverse Mexican groups, including the OImec-linked site of Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico, and also with groups as far away as Guatemala and the Andes mountains. Phenetic analysis of dental morphology …

Producing Fresh Herbs For Fairbanks Restaurants: A Market Survey, Jacquelyn Denise Goss May 2007

Producing Fresh Herbs For Fairbanks Restaurants: A Market Survey, Jacquelyn Denise Goss

Senior Theses

Buyers and producers were surveyed to estimate the demand for fresh culinary herbs among chefs at local Fairbanks restaurants. When thirteen chefs were interviewed, twelve restaurants were found to purchase fresh herbs, primarily basil, parsley, and cilantro. During the summer, the restaurants combined purchased 68 pounds of fresh herbs per week, with 56 percent procured from local growers. Sixty-two percent of the chefs expressed a preference for locally grown products, including herbs. Local producers felt they were able to meet the demand for restaurant herbs and could accommodate additional clients. Many chefs, on the other hand, wished that tomatoes, vegetables, …
