Overweight And Obesity In The South: Prevalence And Related Health Care Costs Among Population Groups, Jerome R. Kolbo, Amal J. Khoury, Wendy Bounds, Jacquelyn Lee
Food Assistance
Overweight and obesity are leading public health concerns in the United States. Although overweight and obesity are preventable conditions in the majority of cases, their prevalence has increased significantly over the past two decades. Recent estimates indicate that 34.1 percent of Americans are classified as overweight, while 32.2 percent are classified as obese [17]. National estimates of obesity-related health care costs are alarming, yet, to date, no such estimates have been published for the Southern region overall or for population groups in the South. The Southern states have some of the highest rates of adult obesity in the nation.

Context: Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) was recently found to be expressed and secreted by adipose tissue, and was strongly associated with insulin resistance.
Objective: The aim was to determine the relationship between RBP4 and obesity, insulin resistance, and other markers of insulin resistance in humans.
Design and Patients: RBP4 mRNA levels in adipose tissue and muscle of nondiabetic human subjects with either normal or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) were studied, along with plasma RBP4. RBP4 gene expression was also measured in adipose tissue fractions, and from visceral and sc adipose tissue (SAT) from surgical patients.
Setting: The study was …

Evaluation Of A Sleep Hygiene Program To Improve Inmate Sleep Quality, Jennifer F. Hodges-Crowder
Doctoral Dissertations
Research investigating the effectiveness of treatments for inmates with poor sleep quality appears minimal. Some difficulties related to poor sleep quality can be addressed effectively with little time and expense. Studies show that psychoeducational interventions are effective in reducing sleep complaints and improving sleep quality in a variety of populations including college students and adults. However, the effect of sleep hygiene interventions on inmate sleep complaints is unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate a psychoeducational intervention program aimed at improving prison inmate sleep habits, length, and quality.
Participants of this study were inmates at a department …

The obesity epidemic is responsible for a substantial economic burden in developed countries and is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The disease is the result not only of several environmental risk factors, but also of genetic predisposition. To take advantage of recent advances in gene-mapping technology, we executed a genome-wide association scan to identify genetic variants associated with obesity-related quantitative traits in the genetically isolated population of Sardinia. Initial analysis suggested that several SNPs in the FTO and PFKP genes were associated with increased BMI, hip circumference, and weight. Within the FTO gene, rs9930506 …

Suppression Of Growth Of A Brown Rot Fungus, Gloeophyllum Trabeum, By Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Poornima Jayasimha, Gregg Henderson
Faculty Publications
Although a brown rot fungus, Gloeophyllum trabeum (Pers.) Murrill, has been shown to be attractive and beneficial to subterranean termites, including Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), no research has been conducted to determine whether the association is mutualistic. We first investigated whether the fungus could be spread by C. formosanus, because this would represent an obvious benefit to the fungus. We found that Formosan subterranean termites did not spread G. trabeum, rather they suppressed its growth. To further investigate this phenomenon, wood chips were inoculated with G. trabeum, and fungal growth was measured in treatments with termites or without termites …

The Fusarium Verticillioides Fum Gene Cluster Encodes A Zn(Ii)2cys6 Protein That Affects Fum Gene Expression And Fumonisin Production, Daren W. Brown, Robert A. E. Butchko, Mark Busman, Robert H. Proctor
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by some Fusarium species and can contaminate maize or maize products. Ingestion of fumonisins is associated with diseases, including cancer and neural tube defects, in humans and animals. In fungi, genes involved in the synthesis of mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites are often located adjacent to each other in gene clusters. Such genes can encode structural enzymes, regulatory proteins, and/or proteins that provide self-protection. The fumonisin biosynthetic gene cluster includes 16 genes, none of which appear to play a role in regulation. In this study, we identified a previously undescribed gene (FUM21) located adjacent …

Tracking ‘Organic’ Agricultural Research In The United States, 1970-1989: What Federal Legislative And Selected Usda-Sponsored Documents Reveal, Leslie M. Delserone, Charles D. Bernholz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This paper enumerates federal government documentation of the period 1970-1989 pertaining to organic agriculture in the United States, identified in the Congressional Information Service’s Cumulative Indices and in bibliographies published by the United States National Agricultural Library. These Congressional hearings, federal legislation, and selected U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-sponsored documents provide an historical context for the 1990 legislation that created the National Organic Program (NOP) and the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). The paper provides chronological tabulations of the historical documents, and discusses the communication difficulties and relationships revealed therein between the Congress, the USDA, and organic producers of …

Asset Outcomes For Women And Children: A Research Review, Gina Chowa
Center for Social Development Research
This paper reviews findings from several studies on asset outcomes for women and children in developing countries. In recent years, the number of studies on asset outcomes for women and children has increased in developed countries; however, there is still a dearth of similar studies in developing countries. Findings from the review reveal that asset outcomes for women in developing countries include increased bargaining power in the household; increased use of reproductive health services; increased expenditure on children’s education, health, and nutrition; and increased household well-being. Asset outcomes for children include educational success and better health. More research on asset …
Asset Building In The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Of China: In-Depth Interviews With Participants In The Hutubi Pilot Study, Li Zou
Center for Social Development Research
Asset-building concepts are being explored by the Chinese government as a possible avenue for socioeconomic reforms that are responsive to President Jintao HU’s calls for scientific development and for a focus on the countryside. We present documentation of an asset-building pilot project in Hutubi County, located in the rural Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. In-depth interviews were conducted with randomly selected program participants to gain a sense of how the program affects individuals and development. The experiences of six families from the region involved in asset building are related in this report. From these experiences, asset ownership is seen …

Law and Contemporary Problems
When a country signs an international treaty, it is not the government but the state that is bound, and the obligation will stand until a subsequent government formally exits the treaty. Exit is presumed to be costly: a government that "repudiates" earlier treaty obligations will suffer reputational harm in its international relations. Moreover, this general background norm of international law applies as well to debt: a government can announce that it is renouncing debt, but it will suffer severe reputational harm in the debt marketplace, much as a government that repudiates public international law obligations suffers a reputational harm. Here, …
