Racial Differences In The Relationship Between Infant Mortality And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Stamper Balistreri, Edward G. Stockwell, Franklin W. Goza
Sociology Faculty Publications
This study presents an ecological analysis of the relationship between infant mortality and economic status by race in metropolitan Ohio, using census data on mother's residence and economic status determined by the percentage of low-income families living in each area. The analysis updates previous studies as white-non-white comparisons for total infant mortality are examined for the US censuses of 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000; and more detailed period- and broad cause-specific rates are presented for 2000. A pronounced inverse association is consistently found between income status and infant mortality for whites, while for non-whites this pattern first emerges in …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Animal Detritus On Growth, Survival, And Mass Of Invasive Container Mosquito Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae, Donald A. Yee, Banugopan Kesavaraju, Steven A. Juliano
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Compared with plant detritus, animal detritus yields higher growth rates, survival, adult mass, and population growth of container-dwelling mosquitoes. It is unclear whether the benefit from animal detritus to larvae results from greater microorganism growth, direct ingestion of animal detritus by larvae, or some other mechanism. We tested alternative mechanisms by which animal detritus may benefit the invasive container-dwelling mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae). In the laboratory, larvae were reared under three conditions with access to 1) detritus, but where microorganisms in the water column were reduced through periodic flushing; 2) water column microorganisms, but larvae had no direct …

Climate. Stern Review: The Economics Of Climate Change, Nicholas Stern
Climate. Stern Review: The Economics Of Climate Change, Nicholas Stern
New England Journal of Public Policy
This chapter examines the increasingly serious impacts on people as the world warms. Climate change is a serious and urgent issue. The Earth has already warmed by 0.7°C since around 1900 and is committed to further warming over coming decades simply due to past emissions. On current trends, average global temperatures could rise by 2–3°C within the next fifty years or so, with several degrees more in the pipeline by the end of the century if emissions continue to grow. This chapter examines how the physical changes in climate . . . affect the essential components of lives and livelihoods …

Articulation Trends In Allied Health Programs, Felicia M. Toreno
Articulation Trends In Allied Health Programs, Felicia M. Toreno
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies
The educational environment emphasizes student access to instructional opportunities. Many health programs are located in community colleges or hospitals, and in order to advance educational status, students must be able to transfer credits between multiple educational institutions. Unfortunately, programs are not uniform and many fields of study are guided by strict accreditation regulations. These conflicting requirements often make transfer for students cumbersome. Transfer pathways are often considered by institutions on a program by program basis. This research was designed to analyze the existing pathways present in urban Virginian allied health programs in order to establish trends in articulation. These instructional …
Serotype Association And Regulation Of The Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes, Martha Stokes
Serotype Association And Regulation Of The Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes, Martha Stokes
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
S. pyogenes expresses many virulence factors, controlled by a complex regulatory network. These include hyaluronate lyase, an enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid, a major component of the human extracellular matrix. Paradoxically, hyaluronic acid is also the sole component of the bacterium's capsule, a primary defense against the host immune response. The hylA gene, which encodes the enzyme, has been shown to take three structural forms: a full-length gene, one containing a 3' deletion and a gene that produces a prematurely truncated protein. This work was intended to show that the structure of hylA is associated with serotype, and …

Improvement And Evaluation Of Greenlip Abalone Hatchery And Nursery Production. Final Frdc Report - Project 2003/203, Sabine Daume
Fisheries Research Contract Reports
A range of experiments aimed at optimizing broodstock performance and nursery culture of greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) were undertaken in Western Australia. Factors investigated that can potentially influence broodstock performance were natal source (wild-caught or farm-grown) and broodstock diets (red algal diet or formulated diet varying in levels of an important fatty acid). Wild-caught broodstock, feeding mainly on a red seaweed diet, produced eggs with higher concentrations of an important fatty acid, arachidonic acid, whereas farm-grown broodstock, feeding on a commercial formulated diet, altered the concentration of fatty acids of the eggs. Feeding farm-grown broodstock natural diets like …

Functional Analysis Of The Fructooligosaccharide Utilization Operon In Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Yong Jun Goh, Jong-Hwa Lee, Robert W. Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The fosABCDXE operon encodes components of a putative fructose/mannose phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS) and a β- fructosidase precursor (FosE) that are involved in the fructooligosaccharide (FOS) utilization pathway of Lactobacillus paracasei 1195. The presence of an N-terminal signal peptide sequence and a LPQAG cell wall anchor motif at the C-terminal region of the deduced FosE precursor amino acid sequence predicted that the enzyme is cell wall-associated, indicating that FOS may be hydrolyzed extracellularly. In this study, cell fractionation experiments demonstrated that the FOS hydrolysis activity was contained exclusively in the cell wall extract of L. paracasei previously grown on FOS. …

Common Genome-Wide Patterns Of Transcript Accumulation Underlying The Wing Polyphenism And Polymorphism In The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Jennifer A. Brisson, Gergory K. Davis, David L. Stern
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, exhibits several environmentally cued polyphenisms, in which discrete, alternative phenotypes are produced. At low-density, parthenogenetic females produce unwinged female progeny, but at high-density females produce progeny that develop with wings. These alternative phenotypes represent a solution to the competing demands of dispersal and reproduction. Males also develop as either winged or unwinged, but these alternatives are determined by a genetic polymorphism. Winged and unwinged males are morphologically less distinct from each other than winged and unwinged females, possibly because males experience fewer trade-offs between dispersal and reproduction. To assess whether shared physiological differences mirror …

A growing body of literature has documented a link between neighborhood context and health outcomes. However, little is known about the relationship between neighborhood context and body mass index (BMI) or whether the association between neighborhood context and BMI differs by ethnicity. This paper investigates several neighborhood characteristics as potential explanatory factors for the variation of BMI across the United States; further, this paper explores to what extent segregation and the concentration of disadvantage across neighborhoods help explain ethnic disparities in BMI. Using data geo-coded at the census tract-level and linked with individual-level data from the Third National Health and …

In eukaryotic translation initiation, eIF2∙GTP–Met-tRNAiMet ternary complex (TC) interacts with eIF3–eIF1–eIF5 complex to form the multifactor complex (MFC), while eIF2∙GDP associates with eIF2B for guanine nucleotide exchange. Gcn2p phosphorylates eIF2 to inhibit eIF2B. Here we evaluate the abundance of eIFs and their pre-initiation intermediate complexes in gcn2 deletion mutant grown under different conditions. We show that ribosomes are three times as abundant as eIF1, eIF2 and eIF5, while eIF3 is half as abundant as the latter three and hence, the limiting component in MFC formation. By quantitative immunoprecipitation, we estimate that ∼ 15% of …

Families Moving Forward: Homeless Women With Children Transitioning To Independent Living, Kristin Elizabeth Hoyt Phd
Dissertations
Family homelessness is one of the most profound and disturbing social problems of the 21st century and is projected to remain an ongoing issue for the United States in upcoming years. The fastest growing segment in the homeless population continues to be families, specifically single women with children. One intervention to the problem of homeless women with children is by providing them with transitional housing, a step beyond the familiar short-term emergency shelter. Transitional housing typically shelters families for up to 2 years. During this extended stay, women participate in programs designed to assist them with addiction, mental health, domestic …
