Spatial And Temporal Structure Of Typhoid Fever In Washington, D.C., 1895-1909: A Geographic Information Systems Exploration Of Urban Health Concerns, Sarah Elizabeth Hinman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The period between 1880 and 1920 was one of the most dynamic in the history of medicine. Morbidity and mortality rates for infectious diseases dropped quickly. Concurrently, miasmatic theory gave way to germ theory. Many of these dynamic changes occurred in the urban centers of North America, which were also entering into a period of dramatic growth and change. Following the 1905 completion of infrastructure improvements intended to improve public health in Washington, D.C., typhoid fever rates unexpectedly increased. Previously, for mitigation purposes, Dr. George Kober investigated a typhoid epidemic in 1895, and as a result of the 1906 increase …

Strange Yarns, Matthew Thomas Bourgeois Jan 2007

Strange Yarns, Matthew Thomas Bourgeois

LSU Master's Theses

I leave a good portion of my art up to chance or my unconscious self, this shows me how closely my prints and drawings relate to the dream world. In dreams most of the physical laws are abandoned, reason and mind are not the dictators of the dream. Dreams have their own logic and are a perfect place to explore a narrative that leaves itself open for the viewer to put any number of meanings into.

Psychiatric Restraint And Seclusion: Resisting Legislative Solution, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2007

Psychiatric Restraint And Seclusion: Resisting Legislative Solution, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

The use of restraint and seclusion in the American psychiatric setting has a rich history—rich in medical, ethical, legal, and social controversy. For centuries, mental health care providers used movement restrictions and solitary confinement to manage psychiatric patients. Superintendents of eighteenth and early nineteenth century insane asylums and other institutions of confinement believed that strait-waistcoats, “tranquilizer chairs,” “maniac beds,” chains, shackles, and “quiet rooms” deescalated agitation and promoted self-control. Reforms beginning in the nineteenth century helped make some psychiatric institutions more humane, in part because staff members were trained to find ways to calm potentially violent patients without imposing holds …

The Immigrant Rights Marches (Las Marchas): Did The “Gigante” (Giant) Wake Up Or Does It Still Sleep Tonight?, Sylvia R. Lazos Jan 2007

The Immigrant Rights Marches (Las Marchas): Did The “Gigante” (Giant) Wake Up Or Does It Still Sleep Tonight?, Sylvia R. Lazos

Scholarly Works

This article documents the genesis of the March 2006 immigrant rights protests and analyzes their impact. Las Marchas were truly spontaneous grassroots protests, the largest massive civil rights mobilization effort for a single event in the United States to date. This paper provides a macro- and micro-analysis of the forces that account for this success. First, the catalyst, HR 4437, a bill that was successfully approved by the House of Representatives would have criminalized illegal presence. This law was perceived as unjust, and engendered a debate around immigrant rights debate in terms with universal and simple appeal, human dignity, the …

Investigation Of Phospholipid Tubule Morphology For Use In Drug Delivery, Colleen Colson Garrett Jan 2007

Investigation Of Phospholipid Tubule Morphology For Use In Drug Delivery, Colleen Colson Garrett

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spherical vesicles consisting of phosphatidylcholines in which diacetylene groups have been inserted in the hydrocarbon tail centers give rise to hollow cylindrical tubes, known as “tubules”. The study of tubules has become an area of intense interest in recent years due to their unusual morphology, which raises several profound theoretical issues and suggests their use in a variety of applications. Tubule hollowness suggests medical and industrial encapsulations as well as filtration and purification applications. These potential uses, e.g., for drug and gene delivery, requires optimization of their morphology for the application. Tubules have many technologically desirable properties, such as a …

Revelations From "Cheesecake Manor": Agatha Christie, Detective Fiction, And Interwar England, Carron Stewart Fillingim Jan 2007

Revelations From "Cheesecake Manor": Agatha Christie, Detective Fiction, And Interwar England, Carron Stewart Fillingim

LSU Master's Theses

For too long standard interwar histories have portrayed the interwar years as a period marked by failure, instability, depression, and volatility. Instead, rising living standards, the narrowing of socioeconomic disparities, expanded avenues of social welfare, increased leisure time, and mass consumerism resulted in an altogether peaceful, healthier, stable, and increasingly affluent England. Out of these rising economic improvements emerged forms of mass entertainment, including popular fiction. Cheaper paper and printing methods, rising literacy, faster distribution methods, new forms of advertising, and the expansion of public libraries led to the creation of a mass readership across England. For the first time, …

Pre-Treatment Of Dynamically Varying Waste Gas Concentrations Using Activated Carbon Prior To Biofiltration: Effect Of Cycle Length On Degree Of Load Equalization, Kodi L. Collins Jan 2007

Pre-Treatment Of Dynamically Varying Waste Gas Concentrations Using Activated Carbon Prior To Biofiltration: Effect Of Cycle Length On Degree Of Load Equalization, Kodi L. Collins

LSU Master's Theses

Dynamically varying waste gas concentrations pose challenges to the operation and design of air pollution control techniques such as biofilters. Although design approaches are becoming well established for biofilters treating gases containing VOC concentrations that are constant as a function of time, many industrial processes emit gas streams contaminated with volatile organic compounds at concentrations that fluctuate with time. Application of an effective load equalization technique could eliminate some challenges associated with fluctuating pollutant concentrations. Recent research has demonstrated that granular activated carbon (GAC) can serve as a passively controlled system to provide load-equalization as a pre-treatment prior to biofiltration. …

Chemical Ecology, Fungal Interactions And Forest Stand Correlations Of The Exotic Asian Ambrosia Beetle, Xylosandrus Crassiusculus (Motschulsky) (Curculionidae), Eric Paul Ott

LSU Master's Theses

Increasing evidence of non-indigenous ambrosia beetles aggressively attacking hosts in their new environment in the United States has led to concern over the potential for damage to urban trees, nurseries, orchards, and forests. A novel technique of flooding host trees was devised to stimulate ambrosia beetle attacks, with ambrosia beetle attraction peaking four days following flooding. In-situ sampling identified significant differences in the composition, quantity and point of release (leaf or bole) of volatiles emitted by the flooded and non-flooded trees. Coupled gas chromatography electroantennographic detection revealed olfactory sensitivity by the ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) to 29 of these …

A Liquid Lens Based On Electrowetting, Jihwan Park Jan 2007

A Liquid Lens Based On Electrowetting, Jihwan Park

LSU Master's Theses

A primary goal of this work is to develop and characterize a novel liquid lens based on electrowetting. A droplet of silicone oil confined in an aqueous solution works as a lens. Electrowetting then controls the shape of the confined silicone oil, and the focal length may be varied upon an applied electric potential. The planar lens design is employed for easy integration of a lens system into a microfluidic device. The achievements of this work are to develop an electrowetting-based planar liquid lens without an off-the-plane electrode structure and to demonstrate the planar liquid lens with variable focal length …

The Apologia Of Franchino Gafurio: A Critical Edition And Translation, Patrick Joseph Kaufman Jan 2007

The Apologia Of Franchino Gafurio: A Critical Edition And Translation, Patrick Joseph Kaufman

LSU Master's Theses

Franchino Gafurio’s Apologia (Turin, 1520) is one musical treatise in a series of works that constituted the famous “pamphlet war” between he and Giovanni Spataro. The dispute originated with the publication of Bartholomeo Ramis de Pareia’s Musica practica (Bologna, 1482). Unconventional and unapologetically critical, Ramis rejected venerated musical traditions in an attempt to align music theory with contemporary music practice. He opposed the Pythagorean division of the monochord and Guidonian solmization syllables, and instead proposed a division which produced pure thirds, and a solmization system based on the octave. His iconoclastic proposals and his highly sarcastic tone called forth a …

Litigating Canada-U.S. Transboundary Harm: International Environmental Lawmaking And The Threat Of Extraterritorial Reciprocity, Austen L. Parrish, Shi-Ling Hsu Jan 2007

Litigating Canada-U.S. Transboundary Harm: International Environmental Lawmaking And The Threat Of Extraterritorial Reciprocity, Austen L. Parrish, Shi-Ling Hsu

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Article joins a spirited debate ongoing among international law scholars. Numerous articles have debated the changing nature of international law and relations: the impact of globalization, the decline of territorial-sovereignty, the ever important role that non-state actors play, and the growing use of domestic laws to solve transboundary problems. That scholarship, however, often speaks only in general theoretical terms, and has largely ignored how these changes are playing out in countries outside the United States in ways that impact American interests.

This Article picks up where that scholarship leaves off. It examines one of the perennial challenges for international …

The Application Of Controlled Radical Polymerization Processes On The Graft Copolymerization Of Hydrophobic Substituents Onto Guar Gum And Guar Gum Derivatives, Veronica Holmes Jan 2007

The Application Of Controlled Radical Polymerization Processes On The Graft Copolymerization Of Hydrophobic Substituents Onto Guar Gum And Guar Gum Derivatives, Veronica Holmes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Guar gum is a naturally occurring polysaccharide; guar gum and its derivatives, such as carboxymethyl guar gum (CMG) are widely used in the oil and gas industry. A hydraulic fracturing fluid for rock formations to enhance oil recovery (EOR) is comprised of viscosifier, gelled CMG, and sand particles (proppants). The gel is mixed with proppant (sand) and pumped at high rate and high pressure into an oil/gas well to the hydrocarbon-producing zone. The applied pressure will force the rock formation to fracture allowing entry of the guar gel/sand mixture. The mixture then fills the resultant fracture. The viscosity of the …

False Rivers, Tracy Heischman Jan 2007

False Rivers, Tracy Heischman

LSU Master's Theses

The issue of Modern society’s detachment from nature and a sense of place are the inspiration for this body of work. The use of aerial landscapes relates to the concept of our increasing disconnection from nature and our environment. Viewers float above the landscape and are not part of it. They can become involved visually but are not connected by a traditional point of view. There is evidence of humanity, but it is impersonal, paired down to simple shapes and brush strokes. By pulling back and showing humanity as a smaller part of the earth, like ants leaving trails in …

Vascular Function, Physical Performance And Aging, Devon Dobrosielski Jan 2007

Vascular Function, Physical Performance And Aging, Devon Dobrosielski

An Investigation Of The Frictional And Thermal Behavior Of Oscillatory Sliding Line Contacts, Mongi Mansouri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research deals with an experimental and numerical investigation of the frictional and thermal behavior of pin-bushing pairs, operating at reciprocating sliding motion or under heavy loads. Large interfacial temperatures developed due to frictional heating can cause failure. Therefore, numerical prediction and analysis of the surface temperature under various operating conditions are important. Laboratory tests using a pin-bushing tester provided measurements of the friction coefficient and temperature. Hard coated and plain (uncoated) bushings, both made of induction hardened stainless steel, were tested. Lower coefficient of friction and surface temperature were observed in the case of the coated bushing. In the …
