Non-Linear Dynamics And Leadership Emergence, Stephen J. Guastello Aug 2007

Non-Linear Dynamics And Leadership Emergence, Stephen J. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The process by which leaders emerge from leaderless groups is well-documented, but not nearly as well understood. This article describes how non-linear dynamical systems concepts of attractors, bifurcations, and self-organization culminate in a swallowtail catastrophe model for the leadership emergence process, and presents the experimental results that the model has produced thus far for creative problem solving, production, and coordination-intensive groups. Several control variables have been identified that vary in their function depending on what type of group is involved, e.g. creative problem solving, production, and coordination-intensive groups. The exposition includes the relevant statistical strategies that are based on non-linear …

Qcd And Spin Effects In Black Hole Air Showers, Marco Cavaglia, Arunava Roy Aug 2007

Qcd And Spin Effects In Black Hole Air Showers, Marco Cavaglia, Arunava Roy

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In models with large extra dimensions, black holes may be produced in high-energy particle collisions. We revisit the physics of black hole formation in extensive air showers from ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays, focusing on collisional QCD and black hole emissivity effects. New results for rotating black holes are presented. Monte Carlo simulations show that QCD effects and black hole spin produce no observable signatures in air showers. These results further confirm that the main characteristics of black hole-induced air showers do not depend on the fine details of micro-black-hole models.

Does Tv Affect Child Cognitive Development?, Fali Huang, Myoung-Jae Lee Aug 2007

Does Tv Affect Child Cognitive Development?, Fali Huang, Myoung-Jae Lee

Research Collection School Of Economics

We investigate whether TV watching at ages 6-7 and 8-9 affects cognitive development measured by math and reading scores at ages 8-9 using a rich childhood longitudinal sample from NLSY79. Dynamic panel data models are estimated to handle the unobserved child-specific factor, endogeneity of TV watching, and dynamic nature of the causal relation. A special emphasis is put on the last aspect where TV watching affects cognitive development which in turn affects the future TV watching. When this feedback occurs, it is not straightforward to identify and estimate the TV effect. We adopt estimation methods available in the biostatistics literature …

Evaluating The Effective Peak Capacity Of A Saw-Tooth Gradient For Reverse-Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography Separation Of Proteins And Peptides, Guimei Cai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The performance of saw-tooth gradient for comprehensive proteome analysis is evaluated using model proteins and a low molecular weight human serum by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. The peak splitting and number of peptides detected is used to characterize the effective peak capacity of the saw-tooth gradient as a function of solvent strength change (Delta&phis;). Peak splitting demonstrated in experimental result as one single peptide or protein detected in more than one saw-tooth step. No peak splitting is observed directly from chromatograms for two model proteins by decreasing the solvent strength change (Delta&phis;) from 5.0%, 1.0%, to 0.1%. The numerical …

Basic Building Blocks Of Real-Time Data Analysis As Applied To Smart Oil Fields, Daniel G. Gonzalez Aug 2007

Basic Building Blocks Of Real-Time Data Analysis As Applied To Smart Oil Fields, Daniel G. Gonzalez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The process of continuously monitoring and analyzing data in real time as well as reacting to events in an effective and more efficient manner represents one of the challenges in the oil and gas industry today. The existence of a computer model that is capable of evaluating data that enters a computer database in real time, performs different kinds of production analysis, and predicts reservoir performance opens new possibilities for field optimization. Having a model that alerts the engineers of abnormal situations during production operations will help to decrease the time of reaction to such events and as a result …

A Scalable Approach For Survivable Virtual Topology Routing In Optical Wdm Networks, Ajay Todimala, Byrav Ramamurthy Aug 2007

A Scalable Approach For Survivable Virtual Topology Routing In Optical Wdm Networks, Ajay Todimala, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The survivable virtual topology routing problem is to route a virtual topology graph on a optical fiber physical topology such that the virtual topology remains connected when failures occur in the physical topology. In this work we study the problem of survivable virtual topology routing under single node/SRLG (Shared Risk Link Group) failure model. We prove that the survivable virtual topology routing problem under node/SRLG failures is NP-complete. We present an improved integer linear programming (ILP) formulation for computing the survivable routing of a virtual topology graph. However, ILP is not scalable when the network size scales more than a …

Urban Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Teachers’ Caring Behaviors And Student’S Self Reports Of Academic Competence, Brenda Rhyne Aug 2007

Urban Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Teachers’ Caring Behaviors And Student’S Self Reports Of Academic Competence, Brenda Rhyne

Theses

This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong …

Parameter Optimization Of Pss Based On Estimated Hessian Matrix From Trajectory Sensitivities, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Seung-Mook Baek

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the optimal tuning for the output limits of the power system stabilizer (PSS), which can improve the system damping performance immediately following a large disturbance. The non-smooth nonlinear parameters such as the saturation limits of the PSS cannot be tuned by the conventional methods based on linear approaches. To implement the systematic optimal tuning for the output limits of the PSS, a feedforward neural network (FFNN) is applied to the hybrid system model based on the differential-algebraic-impulsive-switched (DAIS) structure. The FFNN is firstly designed to identify the trajectory sensitivities obtained from the DAIS structure. Thereafter, it estimates …
